Whether you want to take your business, your marriage, or your entire life from good to great, the ideas in this book are sure to help… as long as you do your part and take action. Whether you are seeking to grow your net worth, rebuild you self-worth, or any other meaningful endeavor, these five proven steps will help you achieve your goals faster.

I have invested my entire adult life studying and teaching the causes and principles of peak

performance. Since 1991, in the course of working with more than a thousand entrepreneurs,

CEO’s and business leaders in over thirty different industries, I have learned a ton. And, in the

process of coaching hundreds of very happy couples from numerous backgrounds, I have learned

even more.

I have learned what it takes to turn around a business, a marriage and a life. I have learned what it

takes to get rid of the mental, emotional and physical clutter that bogs most people down and robs

them of the life satisfaction that they crave. I have learned what it takes to double, triple, or even

quadruple your income in as little as two or three years. Better yet, I have learned what it takes to

work less and still earn more. Most importantly, though, I’ve learned that success is most definitely

NOT an accident!

On the following pages, I have condensed and distilled five essential steps that I’ve used to help

my clients experience more of what they do want while simultaneously experiencing less of

what they don’t want. These five steps are part of a process, that when implemented, will help you

upgrade your results across all areas of life.

Let’s get started!

Clarification

Clarity of intention is the great prerequisite of peak performance. And, lack of clarity is the cause

of more disappointment, underperformance, and strained relationships than any other single

success factor. With clear goals, however, you can progress further and faster than perhaps you ever

dreamed possible. This is great news!

Unfortunately, overlooking the need for clarity is widespread . . . And this well-intended neglect

burns time and resources while causing needless frustration. This is not for you.

Investing the time and mental effort to produce exceptional clarity about where you are headed

always pays a great return. Good intentions without precise clarity won’t get you very far.

Think about it. Good intentions are a dime a dozen. But when your good intentions become clear

intentions, you can change your world. You can change your financial condition, your

relationships, your energy. You can change—for the better—the moment you get serious about

defining what that change actually is.

I’ve learned that most people bypass this process of clarification because it is surprisingly hard

work. It’s challenging because it forces deep, introspective thought. And this contemplative thinking

is difficult due to the sheer velocity of life and the constant noise and distractions that surround

us. Without carving out repeated blocks of quiet time, we have the propensity to keep doing what

Page 4: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR TOMMY ......2016 TOMMY NEWBERRY 2 Whether you want to take your business, your marriage, or your entire life from good to great, the ideas in this

we’ve always done. Without getting still and reflective, we nurse the status quo rather than dreaming

about how to share our passions and strengths with the world.

Clarifying what we really, really want to accomplish is also difficult because it compels us to face

the truth of our past and present circumstances. Acknowledging the reality of who we are today

compared with who we’d like to become can be emotionally jarring. Therefore, lots of people

postpone the exercise of examining their lives and designing their futures.

What about you? What does success mean to you? Answering this question is one of the first

assignments I give my private clients. If I don’t know this answer from my clients, how could I

possibly coach them effectively? And, if you don’t have a clear definition of success, how will

you know what to “say yes to” and what to “say no to” as you go through your day-to-day life and

your day-to-day decision-making? How do you define success in your marriage, as a parent, with

your health, and economically? What has to happen for you to consider the next week a success?

Stop right now and define what an “A+” mega-successful day looks like. What’s the evidence that

tomorrow is a success? OR, just complete this sentence:

I WILL CONSIDER TOMORROW SUCCESSFUL WHEN/IF I…

This will get you going, but it is just the beginning. With a single day taste of real clarity, you will be

motivated to extend this influential habit across your life. Remember, mediocrity is seldom caused

by inferior talent, bad luck, or even poor work ethic; instead, it is almost always the result of mental

confusion and fuzzy expectations. This sounds like bad news, but it is really good news!

You can control the quality of clarity you have about your future goals and aspirations. The most

successful people in the world are those who have taken the time to figure out exactly who they

want to become and what they want to achieve. Then they invest the hours of their days in activities

consistent with these ideals.

You can learn the process of clarification, and when you do, you can become unstoppable.

Simplification

After clarifying your commitments, simplify everything. Remember, simple is easy. Complex

is hard. This is the truth and once you accept this fact, you are ready to soar to new levels of

accomplishment. In my study of successful individuals, I’ve observed that breakthroughs happen

more frequently —and more spontaneously—when goals are simple, when processes are simple,

when products are simple, when marketing messages are simple, when management structures are

simple . . . when life is simple.

One of the greatest enemies of success is complexity:// the self-inflicted habit of making things more difficult than they need to be

// exacerbated by doing too many things at once, or

// failing to clean up distracting messes or quickly face problems head-on

Having too many things on your plate waters down your full potential.

Instead of being an “A-Player,” you are downgraded to a “B-Player.” The temptation to have too

many projects in process at the same time is a challenge felt—most often—by those with enormous

capability. In other words, the sharper you are, the more you believe you can handle. As glorious-

6

sounding as this appears, it is a trap because taking on too much at once taxes your attention and

dilutes what you can focus on and effectively manage.

I have witnessed individuals born with “B-DNA” quickly surpass those with “A-DNA” for one

very glaring reason—FOCUS. Focus is enhanced immeasurably by simplicity of pursuit. Focus is

weakened significantly by complexity of pursuit.

I believe that you can accomplish almost anything you desire to accomplish and are willing to

work for indefinitely . . . IF, IF . . . if you don’t take on too much at once, thereby overfilling your

plate with too many competing ambitions that disperse your attention and drain your energy.

Sequential success tends to work best. This is where you identify the most important business-

changing or life-transforming goal, and then pursue that goal single-mindedly until you take it

across the finish line. Once you’ve achieved the goal, move on to the next goal. This approach allows

you to harness your greatest asset of accomplishment, which is your attention.

In other words, while day-to-day living sometimes demands multi-tasking, your best results will not

come from such efforts. The greatest success stories are about individuals who focused obsessively

on a single pursuit over an extended period of time. As a result of our coaching, clients hyper-

focus on building businesses that are not just successfully big, but “big and simple.” This becomes

an important distinction and priority as they grow their firms. In our workshops, we invest an

inordinate amount of time seeking ways to simplify pathways to our client’s goals.

Whether it’s taking on too many goals at once, ignoring problems, or allowing irritating clutter room

to grow, I encourage you to simplify what you are doing. This is a good mantra to remember:

ELIMINATE & CONCENTRATE!

It will serve you well!

Maximization

The next step in achieving your goals ultra-fast is to leverage your strengths. I call this

process, “maximization.” Ultimately, there are just two philosophies when it comes to being

successful. The first is to be a weakness-fixer. Do you know anyone who operates like this? The

notion is that if you correct your weaknesses, then life will be blissful because the strengths will of

course “take care of themselves.” While I wish this were true, my wish does not make it true. In real

life, strengths will atrophy if neglected. On the other hand, giving too much time to weaknesses will

only make those weaknesses less weak. It will not transform them into strengths.

Therefore, the strategy that we have used for many, many years is this:

EMPHASIZE YOUR STRENGTHS - MANAGE YOUR WEAKNESSES.

In practice this means giving at least 80% of your time and creative attention to leveraging your best

qualities, your best products, and your best services. The other 20% goes to the management of

weakness. Keep in mind, we are not trying to turn weakness into strength. We are, instead, only

attempting to do some innovative “damage control” by minimizing the cost or pain of the weakness.

Even better, this 80/20 approach causes your strengths to get stronger, and in many cases will make

your weaknesses irrelevant.

Think Strengths! What are your strengths? What do you do best? Organize your work day and

ultimately your entire work life around what you do best. Exploit your unique strengths with better

thinking, better systems and better support to enhance the value of your service to others.

Acceleration

Once you’re committed to a goal, you’ll always want it sooner rather than later. If I offered to buy you

a car, but then asked you if you’d like to take possession of it tomorrow or next year, I bet you’d pick

it up tomorrow, right? If I offered you a free coaching program to help you hit your goals, but gave

you a choice of starting the program this month or next year, I am pretty confident you’d choose the

closer option. Everybody that has a goal worth reaching will always want it now—not later—if given

the choice. Do you agree?

In fact, I believe that my entire coaching career has been bolstered by this aspect of human nature.

My clients hire me and my coaching staff in order to hit the right goals faster. That’s kind of why we

exist as a business. Clients pay us a fee to help them reach their goals faster with our coaching than

they would on their own. In essence, they trade some of their money in exchange for crossing the

finish line sooner. They have concluded that they are better off with our services, than without,—as

the old saying goes—time is money.

What about you? Wouldn’t you like to accelerate your goal accomplishment? Which of your goals

would you most like to see accomplished a little sooner than is currently projected? Is it your

financial goal? Is it your fitness goal? Is it your marriage goal?

To accelerate you progress toward any goal, follow these simple steps:

// Clarify your intention with exhausting detail in writing. Write down, or

keystroke, every quality of your desired goal. Include everything. Don’t leave anything

out of this description. Think about your goal as if it is already a reality. Then, make a list of

everything that would be true if your goal had already been achieved.

// Use the 21 Idea Method every morning for 21 straight days. This means

to brainstorm everyday for three straight weeks what you could do or should do to reach

your goal faster. This is an intentionally repetitive drill that pays enormous dividends,

but requires a nice dose of discipline as well. To execute, draft a tightly-worded focusing

question that you will seek to provide 21 answers to each time you repeat this exercise. For

example, “What are 21 ways I could reach 15% body fat in the next 6 months and have fun in

the process?” or “What are 21 ways I could double my income in the next 18 months without

sacrificing my personal life and health?”

Each consecutive day you complete this drill, preferably in the early morning

hours with a cup of coffee nearby, you rewrite or re-type the question, and without

referencing yesterday’s responses, come up with another 21 answers. Push for fresh

answers, but they are not necessary. Know that the point of this drill is to imbed the

goal deep into your subconscious mind so you will become hyper-sensitive to the

opportunities, people, and methods that can help you achieve your goal.

// Assume the mood of your goal already achieved! This is a really cool and fun

challenge that boosts your motivation and accelerates how fast you hit your intended target.

Too often, well-meaning people trudge around hoping and wishing that their goals will

become a reality, but not really believing it. Some people hope and pray and work toward

a breakthrough goal, but think and speak and interact with others as though they’ve already

been assured of failure.

This quirky aspect of our human nature can be overridden in a very healthy way by acting

with confidence and speaking with faith…whether you feel like it or not. Give this a try.

Imagine God had personally guaranteed you success in your most important endeavor.

How would that affect your mood? You’d be filled with joy and gratitude, right? Well, act this

way now, even when and especially when, you do not yet have tangible confirmation of your

accomplishment.

// Secure a performance coach to make sure you outperform your previous best. World class athletes, famous entertainers, and mega-successful business

leaders have one thing in common. You guessed it! They have a coach to ensure they live up

to their God-given best. Think about it. You’ve only got one shot at life, and you might only

have one shot in your current season of life. Why not increase the chances that you reach the

right goals as fast as possible?

When selecting a coach, make sure they have a proven track record and most importantly,

confirm that they share your values and worldview. Then make sure you know what to expect

from the coaching relationship. Keep in mind that excellent coaches will expect a lot from

you as well!

With the right coach, you will be challenged, pushed, inspired, and even agitated! A

strong coach will ask provocative questions and remind you to do what you need to do, just

when you need to do it, whether you feel like it or not. This is a key point. Like an athletic

coach, your performance or life coach will help you clarify your goals and establish

the fundamentals that correspond with the results you’re seeking to create.

Make sure you hire a coach who “tells it like he sees it.” It does you no good to have a soft

coach indirectly enabling lower standards or coddling you if you make excuses. Do you

want to make the next 12 months, the best 12 months of your life so far? If so, hire a coach.

Accountability

Accountability literally means to stand up and be counted. And accountability is the central support

beam for constructing an extraordinary life. Without accountability, you can accomplish a lot. But,

you will never accomplish as much “doing success alone” as you will with an accountability partner.

Let me illustrate using personal training. I love to workout hard and I can do a pretty good job on

my own. But with a trainer by my side, pushing me and guiding me and correcting my form, I can

achieve even better results. An old friend of mine used to joke that without a trainer, he would still

sweat and get tired, but he’d never be as sore the day after. It’s almost impossible to do the extra,

extra repetition without someone pushing you to do it.

I encourage all of my clients to recruit an accountability partner that they can meet with on a

weekly basis. There is just no substitute for giving another person who cares about you the

permission to “look under the hood,” and ask you the tough questions about your faith, your

marriage, your kids, your money, your health and your thought life.

If you make yourself vulnerable like this and “able to be wounded” you will grow more in the next

year than you have in the last decade. The right accountability relationship will help you make goal-

directed choices and overcome the tendency to follow your feelings. With accountability, you move

out of the comfort zone and into the achievement zone.

In addition to direct accountability, it is essential to surround yourself with high-character, highly

motivated individuals who will challenge you and drive greater accomplishment merely by virtue

of your association with them. Gradually, we all take on the beliefs and habits of the people we hang

out with most often. Make this work to your advantage.

Achieving excellent results will not happen by accident! Not only do we need clear goals and a

strategic plan, we also need someone holding our feet to the fire and keeping us from settling

for less than our absolute best. We need to be as “success-minded” as we can be. You will serve

yourself well and reach your goals faster if you hire a coach, enlist an accountability partner, and

make it a habit to invest time with other motivated people.

This is how you outperform your previous best. And this is why I created the SuperFOCUS coaching
