Day by Day Itinerary

DAY 1 - 27 December 2020Fly to Swedish Lapland - Transfer to Abisko.

Fly to Kiruna via Stockholm in Swedish Lapland where you will be met by Petri Tuominen or one of the Abisko guides for the transfer toAbisko, about 1 hour’s travel time. On check-in you will be kitted out with complimentary arctic clothing, yours to use for the duration of yourbreak.

Mina and Dick Johansson, your hosts, run a really friendly and warming Lodge, with a restaurant serving excellent meals using localingredients.

Abisko Mountain Lodge is one of the world’s top locations for witnessing the glory of the Northern Lights viewing, so if they are visible youmay be tempted to step out the door and gaze skywards! There is also the opportunity to wander out for a night walk in one of the bestlocations on earth for aurora watching.

2015 saw the addition of 4 superior rooms at the Lodge. Housed in a separate annexe across the courtyard these rooms add additionalcomfort and space. All are en suite and are for exclusive use by our clients.

DAY 2 - 28 December 2020Husky Safari Adventure. Aurora Photo Experience in Abisko National Park

After breakfast venture out for a 2 hour Alaskan Trapper Husky experience. This half day activity allows you to experience the sensation ofbeing pulled through the snow by your enthusiastic sled dogs. Admire the beautiful landscapes within Abisko National Park whilst your guidedoes all the work!

Return for lunch and then at leisure.

This evening enjoy the fine menu at Abisko Mountain Lodge prior to joining Chad Blakley or one of his team for the exclusive northernlights photo tour designed for weekend a la carte guests staying at Abisko Mountain Lodge. This gives you fantastic opportunities tosee and photograph the aurora borealis in the wilderness of Abisko National Park.

Walk right out the lodge front door and a snowmobile transfer will take you to our exclusive location with commanding views over themountains and the lake, both of which provide wonderful backdrops for aurora photos! You will have 2 guides, one to instruct you and theother to look after you and make drinks etc. We have a yurt set up with a fire so you can warm up if necessary.

You will be supplied with cameras preset for Aurora photography and spend the evening in Abisko National Park. Whether you are a Pro ornever taken a picture in your life you have a great chance of going home after your northern lights holiday with some beautiful auroraphotographs and memories that will last a lifetime!

DAY 3 -29 December 2020.Explore Abisko National Park. Night Visit to Aurora Sky Station

Abisko National Park is sandwiched between picturesque Laporten the ‘whole in the mountain’ created by a retreating glacier and LakeTornetrask one of Sweden’s largest and which freezes during winter.

The team at Abisko Mountain Lodge will provide information on trails you can explore and drop you at the appropriate location . There is aspectacular gorge with a frozen waterfall and the opportunity to walk out on the frozen lake and see the ruptures in the ice

Take lunch at the STF tourist station before transferring back to the lodge.

This evening after dinner in the lodge, transfer to Abisko Sky Station, widely regarded as the best place in the world to see the NorthernLights. Take the chairlift up Mount Nuolja to the observatory which offers visitors a panoramic view over Lapporten, the Abisko Alps andTornetrask. From this advantageous position with commanding views looking north across Lake Tornetrask, the northern lights always seemmore dramatic.

If you would like to Celebrate in Style tonight then consider upgrading to the exclusive dinner at the Sky Station.

Head back to the Lodge around midnight.

Night Visit or Exclusive Dinner at the Aurora Sky Station in Abisko

This evening why not visit the celebrated Aurora Sky Station in Abisko for either a Night Visit or if celebrating a special occasion theExclusive Dinner.

Night Visit

After dinner at the lodge transfer by minibus to the sky station at around 8.30. Venture up on the chairlift for a 3 hour visit. Facing north andwith a spectacular elevation the auroras are spectacular from here if they are out and playing for the evening.

Exclusive Dinner

Rather than having dinner at the Lodge experience the gourmet dinner at the iconic Aurora Sky Station, allowing you an extra 3 hours in theSky Station.

Take the chairlift up Mount Nuolja to the observatory which offers visitors a panoramic view over Lapporten, the Abisko Alps and Tornetrask.Enjoy a delicious three course meal at the sky station prepared using the best local ingredients.

Your chances of seeing the aurora are good. Abisko is blessed with many long, dark nights. In addition, there is minimal artificial light. Abiskois situated 250km north of the Arctic Circle and has the most cloud-free sky in Sweden.

DAY 4 - 30 December 2020Day to Relax or take on an Extra Experience

Breakfast and a day to relax and enjoy Abisko’s beautiful surroundings.

You can venture out for a walk or perhaps add in another activity to your programme.

How about ICE fishing, a snow show walk of for the intrepid and introductory ice climbing session on the face of a frozen waterfall. All of theabove would add £80 per person to your holiday cost. There might even be the opportunity to go down to Narvik for the day on the old ironore railroad. (Timetable published nearer the time)

Dinner at the lodge and another opportunity to witness the northern lights. You don’t have to go far as generally if the skies are clear ( andAbisko is good for that) then you have every chance of seeing some northern lights activity.

DAY 5 - 31 December 2020Snowmobile Safari. Lappish New Year Celebration

After breakfast venture out into the wilds of Abisko National Park on a snowmobile adventure.

Peter your Snowmobile guide, will meet you at the lodge and take you out for a 2 hour exploration of Abisko National Park. As AbiskoNational Park surrounds Abisko Mountain Lodge you don’t have to go far to get some awe inspiring views of the frozen Lake Tornetrask andthe unique glacial formation of Laporten, which rises like a beacon out of the white desert!

Return to the lodge for  lunch and some downtime before dinner.

This evening the chefs at Abisko Mountain Lodge will prepare an authentic Lappish new year dinner utilizing some of the wonderful organiclocal produce.

As midnight approaches top up your glasses and venture outside to toast the New Year. With any luck your northern lights holiday will becomplete with the Aurora blazing above you.

DAY 6 - 01 January 2021Visit Original ICEHOTEL

After breakfast at leisure until departure for Jukkasjarvi, home to the original ICEHOTEL. Now in its 30th edition it gets more impressive eachyear. This incredible structure is built afresh each year and is a must see for anyone visiting Kiruna. Its individually designed suites are worksof art and additionally there is the icebar, chapel and the excellent shop to visit.

You will also see the revolutionary design and function of ICEHOTEL 365!

The driver will then take you onto the airport in time for your flight home at the end of your action packed New Year northern lights holiday toAbisko.

Stockholm is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and always rates in the top 10 most desirable cities in the world to live in. It is alsothe perfect place to ‘top or tail’ your break to see the northern lights.

The old town in Stockholm is very picturesque and compact and can be done in a full day. Your time will be spent exploring some fascinatinglandmarks. The VASA museum is world class, the Nobel museum of local interest and for ABBA fans ABBA interactive museum.You will stayin the Rival Hotel owned by Benny Anderson of ABBA fame. The hotel is an excellent 4* hotel in a quiet square but within walking distance ofthe old town.

We make it easy by including private return airport transfers in the package!

This revolutionary design has allowed visitors from around the world to experience the ICEHOTEL all year round. Through a unique coolingsystem the designers have built all the features of the original icehotel into this amazing structure. Art suites and deluxe art suites are housedin 365

Temporary ICEHOTEL  (open Mid December – End March)

This hotel is rebuilt from blocks of ice harvested from the Torne river. As the temperature in Jukkasjärvi drops below zero Ice Artists arrivefrom the world over to build this magnificent creation. They build the 4 levels of rooms, the ice chapel and ice bar. Their art is created withimagination and hard work, only to melt away under the unforgiving rays of the sun come spring.

We offer all categories of room from cabins to  Art Suites and the new en suite deluxe art suites in ICEHOTEL 365.

We will make a reservation in the restaurant for you so you can experience some of the region’s best cuisine  (a la carte menu paid forlocally)

Where You'll Stay

Abisko Mountain LodgeAbisko Mountain Lodge offers genuine accommodation in an old-fashioned mountain hotel setting. The service is personal and thecuisine is centred on raw ingredients. It is accredited by the Sapmi Slow Food movement, an award which took 4 years to achieve.Chefs are dedicated slow-food addicts and produce wonderful nightly meals!

The 16 standard rooms in the low red 'Swedish style house' are all en-suite. Although basic they are warm and cosy. There are notelevisions in the rooms as time is spent meeting guests around the bar or in the wonderful lounge area.

Additionally there are 4 new superior rooms added in early 2015. These four rooms are in a separate annexe and are usedexclusively by Aurora nights.

Order a coffee or a glass of wine at the bar, read a magazine or spin a yarn about your arctic adventures and the magnificent auroradisplays you have seen.

For those wanting to soothe the muscles there is a sauna.
