Day by Day Itinerary

DAY 1:Fly to Swedish Lapland. Transfer to Wilderness Cabins. Aurora Hot Tub & GourmetDinner

Fly to Kiruna in Swedish Lapland where you will be and transferred to the Arctic Gourmet wilderness cabins by one of our guides. PetriTuominen our lead guide has worked with us since we started in Swedish Lapland 15 years ago and has entertained thousands of our clientsover the years.

On arrival at the Arctic Gourmet wilderness cabins Johan and Malin, the owners, will meet and settle you into your cabin. After your travelsthe perfect tonic is to relax in the northern lights hot tub and soak up the arctic evening.

Dinner will be served in the cosy dining room adjacent to the cabin. Johan is a trained chef and his pride and joy is the ‘Chef’s table’. This hasto be the smallest restaurant in Sweden with just 2 tables with views over the valley and a fitted kitchen where Johan will cook and serve yourGourmet evening meals!

Sit outside afterwards around the camp fire, take a soothing sauna or jump back into the outdoor hot tub and relax with the prospect of aNorthern Lights display flashing above you.

DAY 2:Husky Wilderness Safari. Relaxing Evening at Arctic Gourmet Cabins

After breakfast your guide will pick you up for one of the highlights of your trip, driving a husky sled team in pristine arctic wilderness.

Ylva Forssén is one of a select group of accomplished ‘lady’ husky guides, whose kennels are deep into the valley from where she runs verypersonal sled dog experiences. She has a very unique relationship with her dogs and we always feel it is a privilege to spend time with her.

Once you arrive at the kennels get acquainted with the dogs and receive detailed instructions about how to drive a team. Harness the dogsand feel their excitement as you attach the sled. Head out into the frozen river valley where you will have opportunities to take turns in drivingthe team whilst making stops to take photos. The location is outside the major tourist areas and we can almost promise that you will enjoypristine arctic nature alone.

You will be out for around 2 hours before heading back to base for a warming lunch with the family. You are welcomed right into the heart ofYlva and Peter’s home for lunch.

Either return to the cabins for some siesta time or why not extend your husky experience by taking another wilderness husky tour in theafternoon. You will also be able to assist with the ‘warming down’ of the dogs and learn a bit about kennel craft. ( see optional extra)

This evening enjoy dinner served by Johan and another night of relaxation around the outside fire or take a sauna or hot tub for a great senseof wellbeing.

DAY 3:Snowmobile Safari on Private Trails. Transfer to Abisko the Northern Lights Capital.Visit to the Aurora Sky Station

After breakfast experience a snowmobile trek through part of Europe’s last untouched wilderness. Driving out from Mattarahkka Lodge, runby our long term partner Andreas Mikko, the adventure takes you out in the wilderness following the guide’s own private snowmobile trails.

You will drive your snowmobile through the forest, over frozen lakes and the chance of seeing reindeer and moose in their natural habitat arealways present.

Continue your excursion up to the mountain Eatnamvárri where fantastic scenery will display in front of you; miles and miles of untouchedwilderness towards Kebnakaise, Sweden’s tallest mountain.

Back at the Lodge enjoy a traditional Sami lunch.

This afternoon transfer to Abisko, around a 1 hour journey. Check into Abisko Mountain Lodge, owned by Mina and Dick Johannson, and beissued with your Arctic clothing for the rest of  your Northern Lights holiday.

This evening enjoy the fantastic cuisine at Abisko Mountain Lodge as you partake in their traditional Lappish menu which includes Reindeer,Arctic Char and Cloudberries – 3 of the unique ingredients to the area (vegetarian options are available).

This evening after dinner in the Lodge, transfer to the Aurora Sky Station, widely regarded as the best place in the world to see the NorthernLights. Take the chairlift up Mount Nuolja to the observatory which offers visitors a panoramic view over Lapporten, the Abisko Alps andTornetrask.

During the winter nights when it is dark, depending on the correct weather conditions, it is possible to see the Northern Lights dancing in thesky around you from this fantastic vantage point. The Aurora Sky Station has an exhibition about the Aurora Borealis, created by IRF, theInstitute of Space Physics in Kiruna. Here you will learn more about the phenomenon before going out on the viewing deck to begin yournight sky gazing. Journey down at around midnight and overnight at the Lodge.

Rather than having dinner at the Lodge experience the gourmet dinner at the iconic Aurora Sky Station, allowing you an extra 3 hours in theSky Station.

Take the chairlift up Mount Nuolja to the observatory which offers visitors a panoramic view over Lapporten, the Abisko Alps and Tornetrask.Enjoy a delicious three course meal at the sky station prepared using the best local ingredients.

Your chances of seeing the aurora are good. Abisko is blessed with many long, dark nights. In addition, there is minimal artificial light. Abiskois situated 250km north of the Arctic Circle and has the most cloud-free sky in Sweden.

Enjoy the lodge breakfast before a day trip to Norway or exploration of Abisko National Park!

Take the train, which is weather dependent, from the station near the lodge and follow the famous iron ore railroad with beautiful mountainvistas, frozen waterfalls and stunning Arctic valleys. Once you cross into Norway enjoy the magnificent views and take photos beforecontinuing up and over Björnfjell – a stunning Norwegian mountain dotted with small grass roofed cottages. Meander down the mountain,where small birch trees give way to large evergreens and dramatic mountains fall steeply down into the Norwegian Fjord.

In Narvik you have the opportunity to  take the Gondola up to a vantage point with extensive views out towards the Lofoten Islands, ascendthe observation deck of the Scandic Hotel and take coffee or lunch (not included) or visit the newly built Peace Museum. This state of the artfacility offers a glimpse of what life looked like in these majestic Fjords during the Second World War Nazi occupation.

Plan B, if weather prevents the train from running, is to explore Abisko National Park with its frozen rivers, lake and canyon. The lodge teamhave some excellent walks that include lunch at the STF and return transfer.

This evening enjoy the fantastic cuisine at Mountain Lodge as you partake in their traditional Lappish menu which includes Reindeer, ArcticChar and Cloudberries – 3 of the unique ingredients to the area. The only thing that can interrupt your evening is the Aurora Call. AbiskoMountain Lodge is in a fantastic location for northern lights viewing so if they are out you may be tempted to step out the door and gazeskywards!

After dinner join Chad Blakley or one of his team for their exclusive Northern Lights photo tour designed for Weekend a la Carte. Thisevening provides a great opportunity to see and photograph the aurora borealis in the wilderness of Abisko National Park.

Abisko is situated in a low precipitation zone and has the lowest levels of rain and snow in Lapland. What this means is lots of perfect nightsfor aurora watching.

Walk right out the lodge front door and a snowmobile transfer will take you to an exclusive location with commanding views over themountains and the lake, both of which provide wonderful backdrops for aurora photos! You will have 2 guides, one to instruct you and theother to look after you and make drinks etc. We have a yurt set up with a fire so you can warm up if necessary.

You will be supplied with cameras preset for Aurora photography and spend the evening in Abisko National Park. Whether you are a Pro ornever taken a picture in your life you have a great chance of going home after your Northern Lights holiday with some beautiful auroraphotographs and memories that will last a lifetime!

Day 5Visit Original Ice Hotel and Fly Home

After breakfast and prior to dropping you at the airport, visit the world famous and original ICEHOTEL. Its Art Suites are works of art andadditionally there is the Icebar, Chapel and the excellent shop to visit. If you fancy staying a night and experiencing this unique hotel then wecan arrange this.

Alternatively, why not consider extending your break by adding in our Aurora Addicts Extension into Norway, or another option is to take timeout and see Scandinavia’s capital city, Stockholm.

Where You'll Stay

Arctic Gourmet Wilderness CabinsArctic Gourmet Wilderness Cabins are new builds and combine wilderness with creature comforts not normally associated with awilderness experience.

Situated in a picturesque valley they are perfectly placed for guests to combine both a northern lights and arctic adventure. Forthose of you that appreciate good food, meals prepared and served in the smallest restaurant  in Sweden are a delight.

There are two cosy double bedded cabins with large glass windows facing north towards the northern lights horizon. Modernstyling includes satellite TV!

There is an adjacent toilet and shower block and an outdoor hot tub which guests are invited to use.

After dinner sit around the outdoor fire, gaze at the stars and hopefully the aurora, enjoy a hot drink or a whisky and appreciate howspecial it is to own a piece of Lapland for moment in time!

Being away from it all in your own private space with the auroras roaring overhead is simply breath-taking and the perfect specialoccasion retreat!

 

Abisko Mountain LodgeAbisko Mountain Lodge offers genuine accommodation in an old-fashioned mountain hotel setting. The service is personal and thecuisine is centred on raw ingredients. It is accredited by the Sapmi Slow Food movement, an award which took 4 years to achieve.Chefs are dedicated slow-food addicts and produce wonderful nightly meals!

The 16 standard rooms in the low red 'Swedish style house' are all en-suite. Although basic they are warm and cosy. There are notelevisions in the rooms as time is spent meeting guests around the bar or in the wonderful lounge area.

Additionally there are 4 new superior rooms added in early 2015. These four rooms are in a separate annexe and are usedexclusively by Aurora nights.

Order a coffee or a glass of wine at the bar, read a magazine or spin a yarn about your arctic adventures and the magnificent auroradisplays you have seen.

For those wanting to soothe the muscles there is a sauna.

Superbly organized aurora and arctic activities agenda The tour organizers, Kevin (owner) and Jan, provided a lot of personalized attention,including some fine tuning of the agenda to meet our desires. This tour is really a managed agenda, with accommodations, dining,transportation and activities arranged and coordinated. This isn’t a group tour, with a lot of fellow travelers and a lot of bus time. Weekend àla Carte knows the good places to stay and eat, and fun ways to spend the daylight hours in the arctic. Everyone we met along the way wascharming, upbeat and helpful. While there were activities planned each day, there was also a nice amount of unscheduled time for relaxation.

The trip was simply the best and more! The beauty of the Lapland scenery, the exhilaration of Husky sledging with such beautiful dogs, andto top it all, fantastic food. And then the bonus - the Northern Lights put on a display.
