Sandra: Tommy, what are you reading?

Tommy: Im reading about the Mayan Civilizations. They are very interesting. Do you

know about them?

Sandra: They are the guys who predicted the world will end this year, arent they?

Tommy: Yes, thats why they are popular these days. But they made so many other

contributions. They were the only civilization in America with very developed

concepts, such as agriculture, astronomy, medicine, a calendar, and even

math. They were the ones who invented the concept of zero!

Sandra: Wow, I didnt know that. How do you think they invented zero?

Tommy: Maybe they came up with that idea when trading their things. They must

have needed a symbol to represent nothing.

AdvancedSandra: Wow, this book about Atlantis is hard to put down.

Tommy: Atlantis? Ive never heard of it. What is it about?

Sandra: Atlantis is a perfect city on an island where a perfect society used to live.Its also called Utopia. No crime, no problems, no pollution, not anything

wrong. And it was full of uncanny richness in all aspects, such as arts,

math, and science. Aristotle described it in one of his writings, but

archaeologists have never found evidence of its existence. Some people

say the whole island might have sunk.

Tommy: Thats interesting. And what do you think happened to the city?

Sandra: I dont know. People in there may have emigrated to other places, and

the island might have been destroyed by a tsunami. Or maybe they were

so advanced that they must have found a way to travel to other planets.

Tommy: Yeah, right!

Sandra: Really? Why? What (had happened / happened)to them?

Tommy: Well, its still a mystery. Some people think they (may have / may)hidden and

then travelled to other places, but they have not found similar pyramids

anywhere else. Some scientists think they (might have / must have)caught an

epidemic and then all of them died; and yet the Spaniards didnt find dead

bodies.

Sandra: Thats weird! They just couldnt (disappeared / disappear) without leaving

any trace. Oh, I got it! The Mayans(must have / should have) been abducted

by some aliens, in the same way they did with the people in Atlantis.

Tommy: Aliens? Now, thats a really weird speculation!
