pumping principle are used : Monoblock rotary-piston pumps of single or two-stage design, and trochoid pumps in single-stage models only.

Monoblock pumps with direct-drive motors have been used successfully in industry for many years; trochoid pumps are newer but have already proved themselves in coarse vacuum applications. All of these pumps follow the established Leybold direct-drive practice, for quiet drives of good reliability. Full details are given of the design specifications, dimensions and typical pump-down times.

N e w T h o m p s o n C h a r l t o n b r o c h u r e Thompson Charlton Engineers, the Manchester-based unit of Clarke Chapman's Horseley Piggott Division, have issued a new brochure describing their design, engineering and commissioning skills in the field of process plant.

The brochure reviews Thompson Charlton's experience in many different types of work, from cryogenic plant for a gas utility to involvement in advanced gas-cooled reactor projects, and points to the particular skills and resources embodied in the unit and available in support from the Clarke Chapman organisation. Efficient resource management and tight contractual control are two themes highlighted by the publication.

Horseley Piggott Division is one of seven Clarke Chapman divisions trading in the United Kingdom. The Company product range includes nuclear and fossil-fired boilers, process plant, advanced welding systems, offshore and drilling equipment, marine deck machinery, heavy cranes, bridges and large steel structures, transportation tankers and concrete machinery, fabrications and castings. A strong exl~rt performance is complemented by the activities of major design and manufacturing organizations in Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

V a c u u m d e p o s i t i o n systems and modules Bulletin T-116 is a twelve-page booklet describing the complete line of fully automated SL-8001 Thin-Film Vacuum Deposition Systems available from Sloan Technology Corporation of Santa Barbara, Ca. This booklet provides information and specifications on the various types of systems available for thin-film evaporation from electron beam and resistance sources. Described are standard system configurations ranging from 18 and 24 in. bell jars to large production type box coaters. The booklet also describes optional system instrumentation and fixturing available for automating the complete deposition process and tailoring the systems for specific thin film applications.

Veeco Instruments Inc--Annual Report 1975.

Vacuum Generatom Ltd--'Newsletter', December 1975.

'Electron Microscopy News 9'--a publication from Perkin-Elmer Ltd, is concerned chiefly with a technical account of the H500-- a universal transmission electron microscope.

P e r k i n - E l m e r a n a l y t i c a l n e w s , no 12 Pelan 12, the latest edition of a quarterly newsheet by Perkin-Elmer Ltd, manufacturers of analytical instruments, includes original material for all scientists concerned with chromatographic analysis.

This entire issue is devoted to the discussion of Open Tubular Capillary Columns. The two main types of capillary columns--wall coated (WCOT) and porous layer (PLOT)--are described together with their advantages in resolution and speed of analysis compared with packed columns. A summary is given of the variety of tubing materials now available, and the characteristics required for specific types of analysis. Column connections for glass and stainless steel capillary columns are detailed, and instrument design in relation to the accommodation of these columns is also discussed, with particular reference to the Models F33 and F17. Injection techniques for these two instruments are considered, column preparation requirements and availability of these columns listed, and finally several examples of applications most suited to use of glass capillary columns are given. These include the analysis of essential oils, steroids and environmental samples.

T h i c k f i l m use rs ' p r o b l e m s s o l v e d ERA Ltd have produced a comprehensive, up-to-date guide to thick film conductors which will be invaluable to users who, until now, have either had to carry out their own extensive and expensive in-house characterisation and testing, or seek data in the large volume of available manufacturers' literature which naturally tends to stress the advantages of specific products rather than to highlight limitations.

The ERA survey will assist users who find the proliferation of new pastes presents increasing problems. It has not always been easy to distinguish between significant improvements or genuine innovations on the one hand and minor product modifications or "cosmetic' changes on the other. The guide identifies the important advantages and disadvantages of the different alloy types, the significance of the introduction of reactive bonding, the trade-offs between conflicting technical characteristics and between performance parameter and price, and covers the market world-wide. Headings include: formulation of thick film conductors; principal characteristics of the main types of conductor; lists and summary descriptions of the properties of commercially available products ; detailed data by parameter category; prices and vendors.

The survey provides an independent guide to thick film conductors prepared by specialists who have been involved in the development of thick film materials, and with thick film technology generally, for eight years. It collates and presents, in a 200 page document, information on some 300 conductor products made by 12 manufacturers.
