Hello everyone,

Welcome to the August newsletter.

This is a big one. Thanks for all your contributions. Can I please remind clubs and organsiations to also send their news to the local newspapers. The North Central News & the Buloke Times are very generous in letting me use articles that have appeared in their papers and we need to return the favour. It’s a chance to show other towns and the wider public what a great little town we live in.

At home on the ranch it’s almost too wet to do anything. This, of course, is a nice problem to have. Compared to this time last year things have improved remarkably. Let’s hope it continues.

I’m still immersed in writing the bowls book. Only a month or so to go (I hope). It’s been a huge task but I’m looking forward to the finished product.

The boys still appear to be doing all the right things so all is well.

Carolyn

August 2019

Contributed by Jenny Pollard They’ve graced the Rex stage a number of times now -

bringing the quintessential sound of jazz rhythms to life through the multiple skills of their talented members.

The vibrancy and sheer joy that the “Hot B Hines’ exude, as they play their extensive repertoire of jazz standards, fun pieces and traditional numbers, is one of the many reasons the band has such a dedicated following.

And so it was at the recent Sunday afternoon as the boys brought their magic touch to the Rex Theatre’s winter-warmer event – Jazz in July.

Drawing people from across the region and beyond, the band’s seemingly casual on-stage presence underscores the skill and the passion which is immediately obvious as soon as the first bars of music launch a show.

From the conversational tone of leader Ken Collins’ introductions, to the jocular interaction between members on stage, the Hot B Hines embrace the audience with not only sublime sound, but with a sense of eagerness in sharing their particular musical style.

It was hard to pick a highlight from an afternoon packed with impressive performances. Ensemble pieces and profiled players each were a stand-out, but it’s possible that Barry Currie’s rendition of the “Swingin’ Shepherd Blues” - played with great virtuosity on the flute – was something to absolutely savor.

A varied program, incorporating lesser known tunes mixed with all-time favourites, impressed many of the band’s followers.

From “The Memphis Blues” to “Dapper Dan” (featuring David Hines vocals), “Nagasaki” (featuring Herb Jennings), “Isle of Capri” (Wally Joosen doubling with vocals and

percussion), “It Don’t Mean A Thing” (John Huf – sousaphone and David Hines – guitar), “Do You Know What it Means to Miss New Orleans” (Barry Currie) to Ken Collins razz-a-matazz opening “Sailing Down Chesapeake Bay” the jazz standards of the ‘20’s, 30’s and 40’s were on fire.

Along with the friendly on-stage banter, and the snippets of information about the history of each song, the driving beats, rhythms and cadences were mesmerizing.

For the dedicated, more jazz appreciation beckons with promos for the February Port Fairy Jazz Festival being circulated by one of the event’s organisers, John Huf.

For Sunday’s crowd however, the chance to sit back and enjoy the familiar sounds in their local area was an excellent way to pass a wintery afternoon.

Welcome again to your local museum’s monthly update. We are pleased to advise that following all the work detailed in last month’s newsletter, we are just about back to normal and ready for visitors. The completed work looks fantastic and the treatment for white ants should hopefully see many years free of building issues in this historic old building.

Well done to those who guessed the mystery item last month. It was a difficult item and rarely seen these days, but if you said a ‘Fluting Iron’ you were spot on. When heated, it was used to make ruffles for collars and frocks. Good luck with this month’s selection from the collection.

A very special personal item is featured below. It is a very old post card returned to the museum’s collection and reads as follows;

“Dear Miss Muster, This card will show you that l am in Charlton. I’m still getting settled down though l still think of the green pastures l left. I am very comfortable here and have quite a nice room at school. How are the children progressing with their new helper? Kind thoughts to all. Second thoughts, l will fill in the rest of this card. The drive over wasn’t too bad – the horses travelled well. I am boarding at Mrs News. The old

lady’s have a very nice place and the people are very kind. How is the little man in my place? Hope they have not quarrelled with him yet. Love to Mrs C and self. Sincerly yours, N.L.Tullock.”

Miss Nellie Tullock was a very popular Kindergarten Teacher at Charlton Elementary School from 1909 to 1914. On departing to Beaufort, The East Charlton Tribune wrote about her ‘skilful and painstaking tuition’, and her ‘labour of love in the interest and welfare of the little ones’. At a special assembly she was presented with a handsome travelling case, a sum of money to purchase a souvenir and a pair of vases. Her time at the Methodist Church playing the organ and running the Sunday School was also recognised with the presentation of a gold watch, with Rev. A. McKay praising her as “one of their best workers, and one of the most worthy people in the Church”. Nellie lived to the age of 86, dying in Beaufort in 1957. Does anybody know about Mrs News Boarding House?

As always, we welcome new members to join our group of volunteers here at the museum. Another option to support our work is to become a Friend of the Museum. Cost is just $20 per year for singles, or $35 for a family.

August 2019

Contributed by Jenny Pollard Building and Growing the Lions Vision

Building on an already impressive year is the vision of new Charlton Lions President, John Headon as he stated his purpose following the Change-Over Dinner installation held recently at the Charlton Motel.

The Lions voluntary service was clearly articulated both through the club’s works, and also by Buloke Mayor, Carolyn Stewart, who commended the work Lions dedicate to the Buloke communities.

A busy evening, highlighted with presentations, saw the involvement of a number of guests, including Past District Governors (PDG) Malcolm and Jill Qualtrough and Zone Chairman, Robert Condliffe. Other guests attending included Mayor, Carolyn Stewart and her husband Anthony, Cr. David Pollard and his wife Jenny, along with representatives from St. Arnaud and Wycheproof Lions, Charlton Rotary and Charlton OASIS.

MC’d by Geoff Winsall, Lions procedure was carried out during the course of the evening, with 2nd Vice District Governor, Harry Brindley responding with appreciation to the Mayor’s earlier Lions Toast.

Recognition of commitment was accorded to 7 long-standing members with the presentation of Monarch Awards by PDG Malcolm Qualtrough. Recipients included – Neil Cossar – 30 years (plus 5 years in Apex), John Headon – 40 years, Kevin Willey – 20 years, Greg Wain – 20 years, Peter Watts – 30

years, Geoff Winsall – 40 years and John Stahl – 40 years. Making a grand total of 220 years service between them, these members have clearly demonstrated the Lions motto of “We Serve”.

The presentation of Centennial Awards (instigated during the Lions Centennial year) rewards sponsorship of new members and was made by Zone Chairman, Robert Condliffe. Two Club recipients, Harry Brindley and Vijin Vijay, earned a Diamond and Silver Award respectively – Harry for his sponsorship of Vijin and Vijin for sponsoring his friend Soyal Kaduthody Abraham.

Outgoing President, Peter Watts then presented his final report, thanking his Executive, members, Lions ladies and the Buloke Shire for their support.

Amongst an extensive range of initiatives (more below) the highlight was a proposal made on behalf of the Yawong Windfarm and Bayawa Australia to provide annual ongoing funds for the next 25 years through Charlton Lions to support the Charlton Community Car project.

Made through Bayawa’s Australian representative, Severin Staalesen, the generous commitment will ensure the ongoing availability of this important community service for Charlton for many years to come.

Installation of the new Board was undertaken by PDG Malcolm Qualtrough, who congratulated members on their commitment and wished them well for the future. The

Executive comprises: 1st VP -Geoff Winsall, 2nd VP – Ross Lane, Secretary – Neil Cossar, and Treasurer – Garry Larmour.

This was followed by the installation of John Headon as the incoming President for 2019/20.

Before the evening’s conclusion Harry Brindley gave a detailed outline of the Lions Eye Health Program before presenting Certificates of Achievement to Lions Neil Cossar and Kevin Willey who completed the program’s assessor’s training.

A final note of appreciation was made to Peter Watts for his year’s leadership. Peter will now move on to sharing the role of Zone Chairman with Robert Condliffe.

Lions Achievements 2018/19:

• Donation of $1500 to the Lions Prostate Cancer detection and machine

• Support for the “Beautify Charlton Project”, Charlton Park Project, reinstallation of the boards at the Charlton weir, scholarships to Charlton College and St. Joseph’s Primary School, funding for the Playgroup “Musical Tots” program

Contributed by Jenny Pollard Doug at the Reins for Rotary

There’s no pun intended, but for those who know Doug Gregtrix it was an opportunity too good to miss, as the former harness racing starter was installed at the recent Charlton Rotary Change-Over dinner.

Supported by family, invited guests and fellow Rotarians, Doug assumed the mantel of leadership from immediate past president, Sue McLean, and pledged to continue Rotary’s extensive work into the future.

Congratulating Sue on her year’s incumbency, Doug named the 2019/20 executive (Secretary – Dale Watts, Treasurer – Roy Postlethwaite, Community – Lloyd Paterson, International and Vocational – Bill Freeman) and spoke of the need to keep the Rotary Club functioning.

MC, Wayne Litton kept the evening moving along with introductions and acknowledgement of special guests, Rosanne Kava (District Governor for District 9780), Cr. David Pollard and his wife, Jenny, along with representatives from St. Arnaud and Kerang Rotary Clubs, Charlton Lions and Charlton OASIS. An extensive list of apologies was also noted.

Following the substantial main course (at the East Charlton Hotel), Kevin Mathews called for the recognition of the Paul Harris Fellows, before incoming District Governor, Rosanne Kava spoke, praising Sue and the Club on their “fabulous” year.

Looking to the future and working with President-Elect Doug, Rosanne commended the Club for the evening’s “good fun and fellowship.”

The induction of new member Gary Wood and acknowledgement of his wife, Diane, was also a highlight of the evening, with Gary speaking of the significant input which his father, Ted, and grandfather, Bill had made to the Club.

A trip down memory lane via an AV of Rotary archive photos and videos offered a laugh-filled interlude, with Gill Gretgrix providing a running commentary. Familiar faces – from the past, and many more recent – were recalled and there was plenty of audience interjection as each new image appeared on the screen.

In presenting her final report, Sue McLean spoke passionately about the inclusiveness of working with other service clubs, as well as highlighting many of the Club’s triumphs and challenges over the past year. It was with profound sadness that the passing of long-time member Geoff Wright was noted, but in a lighter vein Sue was pleased to welcome back Lloyd Paterson following a health “hiccup”. She also thanked all Club members for their diligent work and support throughout the year.

In break with tradition, Sue bypassed the reading of her annual report and finished on a lighter note with a joke.

Prior to the conclusion of the evening, a presentation was made to Kevin and Pat

Mathews on the recent occasion of their 60th wedding anniversary.

A Snapshot of Charlton Rotary 2018/19 Amongst an extensive year of achievements the following are some of the highlights:

• Books for Babies” presented to 18 local infants

• The Art Show (with recognition to the organizational committee and the Wooroonook Lakes Committee)

• The Charlton Christmas Fest (acknowledgement of generous financial support from Bendigo Rotary)

• Carols at the Rex

• Centenary Commemoration of Charlton RSL (barbeque duties)

• Charlton Airport Runway Lights Renewal

• Student Exchange Program

• Charlton Weir and Boardwalk Donation - $10,000

• Financial support for the Rotary All Rounder Awards (Charlton P12 College and St. Joseph’s Primary School), Tyebally Scholarship, Year 10 Work Experience, Sunnyside Barbeque annual fundraiser (hosted by Jon and Liz Whykes)

• International contributions to East Africa Fund, School for Life Foundation, Donations in Kind, Student Exchange Program.

• Continued enjoyment of the fellowship of the “Social Club”.

Above: A passing of the mantel as former Charlton Rotary President, Sue McLean, handed over the Club leadership to new President Doug Gretgrix at Rotary’s installation dinner.

Above: Welcoming a new member is always significant, and Gary Wood, pictured with his wife Diane, has an impressive pedigree when it comes to Rotary. His father, Ted, and grandfather, Bill were respected and active Club members, and it was also fitting that Gary’s mother, Margaret (a stalwart of the Charlton club and one of the founding members of the Art Show) was present at his induction.

August 2019

At the Annual General meeting of the Golden Grains Museum on Friday 19th July 2019 President Anne reported on a busy & productive year for the Charlton Golden Grains Museum and thanked the members and friends for their time & efforts during the year.

Some highlights of the year were:

• A Bridal Fashion Parade which was a joint venture between Cabbaritta CWA and the Museum. The Rex Theatre was packed & afternoon tea was held at the Charlton Club. This venture won the Event of the Year at the Charlton Australia Day Celebrations

• “A Night at the Museum! Featuring the Fabulous Fifties” – a display of 50s memorabilia was enjoyed by the many visitors.

• Some excursions have been – High Tea at Fortuna Villa, a visit to Langi Morgala Museum & Art Gallery at Ararat & a coach load journeyed to the Tudors to Windsors Exhibition at the Bendigo Art Gallery.

• The members were pleased to sign a user’s agreement with the Uniting Church to use two of their unoccupied buildings. The small Kindergarten Sunday School Building has now had a new floor installed & has become a much needed storeroom. Renovations to the Wesley Chapel will be the next project & the Museum thanks the Uniting Church Catering Group for

$5,000 contribution towards this.

• Accreditation with MAVIC has been a major focus. This has entailed many hours ensuring our procedures, policies and practices are compliant.

• The Museum has 30 Indigenous objects and these have now been catalogued thanks to Aboriginal Victoria & the Dja Dja Wurrung Corporation.

The usual tasks connected with the Museum have continued:

• Fundraising – The major fundraising efforts were trips to Bingo at Donald, a Lotto competition & raffle.

• Research requests continue to be received.

• The Museum is open every Sunday & also by request. The Family History Group continues to meet monthly.

• The Museum is grateful to receive Acquisitions which are pertinent to the local area. Some of the many items donated this year included bird taxidermy & egg collection, Young Farmers items, & the organ from Buckrabanyule Church.

• Each month an article in the Charlton Newsletter is written by our Archivist. This features general Museum news, a feature item from our collection & also a mystery item.

• A new project this year has been to record Oral Histories.

• Volunteer hours – over 1,067 hours has

been contributed at the Museum & many hours outside the Museum.

• Newspaper Indexes are being typed & a photo Register has been completed.

• The museum continues to have a steady stream of individual Visitors and groups. Some of the groups to visit this year were PAG, Wycheproof Senior Citizens, Charlton College.

• Two members attended a Vic Collections Workshop at Horsham.

• The President & Secretary attended the Western Victorian Association of Historical Societies AGM at Swan Hill. Unfortunately the perennial problem of

white ants has meant the Museum has been closed to visitors for a few weeks while repairs were undertaken.

This year great inroads has been made into the backlog of items needing to be catalogued but unfortunately there is still more to be done. The 2019/20 Committee is: President Anne Kenny Vice President Markus Phillips Secretary Carolyn Olive Treasurer Glenda Litton Curator Carolyn Olive Archivist Markus Phillips

By “Quill” Courtesy of the Buloke Times. The re-planting of many trees as part of

Stage 1 of North Central Garden Club’s “Beautify Charlton” project, commenced on Wednesday, July 10, with a ceremonial ground-breaking by Mayor Carolyn Stewart and Garden Club President Bernice Kenny.

The first part of stage one was completed earlier in May, with the removal of the old trees that lined the shoulders of High Street at the eastern entrance to town. After agreement between the Shire and the Beautify Charlton committee, it was decided that the new trees would be planted along the nature strip. “Moving the trees further back from the road, essentially widening the street, will have future benefits, such as improved visibility along the highway, and improved accessibility for both vehicles and pedestrians at intersections and property entrances” said Beautify Charlton spokesperson Robin McRae. “We now have a spectacular wide thoroughfare and nature strip planting means that many more trees can be planted. Ultimately, well in excess of 60 new trees will be planted in the High Street precinct.

Re-Planting Considering details such as tree height, foliage spread, and visual aesthetics, it was only after careful deliberation that new species were selected to replace the old trees. Planting of Korean Sun Ornamental Pears commenced on the nature strip beside the Cricket Club Hotel, stretching east past St. Joseph’s Primary School. Other species included in the planting were Aristocrat Ornamental Pear, and Crepe Myrtles. Mayor Carolyn Stewart was in attendance, along with Garden Club President Bernice Kenny and spokesperson Robin McRae. The mood was one of celebration. “Finally! The trees are being planted!” Bernice Kenny exclaimed, after helping Mayor Carolyn Stewart ceremoniously throw dirt on a new sapling; the relief in her voice was evidence of the efforts that have gone in to this project. And with the help of Bell Environmental’s hydro-vacc truck; digging was done in spades! The impressive truck equipped for non-damaging digging, used pressurized water to cut through the earth,

ensuring the safety of underlying cables and pipes. A heavy duty pump transported the resulting mud into a holding tank on the truck, to be re-used as fill later when it dried. Breaking up the dirt beautifully, it only took a few minutes for each hole to be dug, then filled back up with soil and sapling. Soon the street was lined with the young trees and it is anticipated that the planting part of stage 1, will be completed by the time you read about it. Now that they are planted, the Beautify Charlton Committee will see to the care and maintenance of the new trees for the first two years

Funding The “Beautify Charlton” project was a

community idea initially; however, the collaborative effort between community and the Council has been what has made the project successful to date. Funded through the community, there has been $21,500 raised locally, including a $10,000 grant from the Community Bank matched in total with $2,500 each from Lions, Rotary, Oasis and North Central Garden Clubs of Charlton; plus $1,000 from the Charlton Chamber of Commerce and in excess of $500 from Charlton Cabbaritta CWA. A grant of $44,000 from the Tackling Tough Times Together stream of FRRR meant the project was able to start on time, and in-

kind works of labour and machinery from the Buloke Shire, which has been fantastic, matching the community’s efforts and input. As Robin McRae said, “The Shire has been great; what you see is a truly collaborative effort.”

Future Stages The next stage of the beautification project

will follow the same format as Stage 1, the removal of all the Desert Ash trees and re-planting with Ornamental Pears of similar varieties along Mildura Way, commencing mid-2020. The third stage of the project includes ongoing enhancements, such as updating town signage, re-creating of the signs at the five entrances to Charlton, and returning once again to “Friendly River Town”. This part of the project will include the facilitation of an independent Charlton Notables Committee, which will honour and commemorate those people who have had a significant impact, from Charlton’s inception to the town it is today. Enhancements to Travellers’ Rest, river front and weir developments, Charlton 2020, Beautify Charlton – all of these serve as illustrations of a town showing its true community spirit, with a determination to be a relevant and appealing community long into the future.

St Joseph’s Community has had 2 special reasons to celebrate during July. The first occasion was Fr Peter Jose becoming an Australian citizen. Fr Peter was born & raised in India and in 2010 came to the Ballarat Diocese. He served in Ballarat, Mildura & Sea Lake parishes before moving to Charlton in 2017. Fr Peter realised Australia was now his home & so on Wednesday 10th July he became Buloke Shire’s newest citizen. St Joseph’s community celebrated Fr Peter’s citizenship, in the presence of Bishop Paul & parishioners, on Friday 26th July.

The second reason for celebrating was a visit from Bishop Paul Bird from Friday 26th July to Monday 29th July. Bishop Paul was welcomed to St Joseph’s community on the Friday when he joined parishioners for a meal in the Multi purpose room at St Joseph’s School. As Bishop Paul had just recently had a special birthday we shared a cake with him.

On Saturday morning Bishop Paul celebrated Mass at the EWHS Aged Care Facility. Some parishioners who were unable to be at Friday night’s celebration joined with the residents. Later a light

luncheon was enjoyed by all. During the afternoon Bishop Paul spent some time visiting people in their homes. These visits were greatly appreciated.

Saturday night Bishop Paul celebrated Mass & once again shared a meal with some parishioners. On Sunday Bishop Paul visited other communities in the Mary Glowrey Parish while on Monday he spent time at St Joseph’s School.

St Joseph’s Community thanks Bishop Paul for spending time with us.

Bishop Paul’s Visit On Monday the 29th of July, Bishop Paul Bird,

visited our school for the morning. We all assembled in the multi purpose room where school captains, Elise and Danny led a short liturgy, and afterwards the whole school performed two songs, ‘These Hands’ and the ‘Rainbow Song’. We all then went back to our respective classrooms. Each classroom was visited by Bishop Paul, where we were free to ask questions. Bishop Paul and Father Peter then stayed on to have morning tea with the rest of the staff.

This ended a very busy weekend for Bishop Paul as he had attended a parish casserole tea on Friday night, followed on Saturday by a visit to the local nursing home, lunch at the Vale of Avoca, visits to elderly parishioners, and mass followed by dinner at the Cricket Club Hotel. On Sunday, he travelled to Banyena and St.Arnaud for their local masses. A very busy weekend ended with him visiting, St.Patrick's School on his way back to Ballarat. Written by the students of the 3/4/5/6 class, St Joseph’s.

A CHARLTON CONNECTION

Charlton Badminton was again on show on a wider stage – with the ‘Charlton Heenan +’ team competing in the Victorian Veterans’ competition held recently at the Altona Badminton Centre. The 10 team members all having a connection of some form to Charlton. Charlton stalwarts Brian and Rae Heenan , were joined by son and current Charlton player Troy, second son Roger (now playing at Geelong), daughter Bronwyn (Geelong), Sharon McLean also a Charlton member, Max and Gloria Baldwinson – members in Charlton in the mid ‘80s, their daughter Emma, and rounding out the team, was Mike Scandolera. The Scandolera name not being foreign to Charlton, with Mike’s forefathers having roots in the town – and sharing a connection with Heenans - with Brian and Mike’s father sharing great grandparents.

For those who may remember, Mike Scandolera is a Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist in the sport of Badminton – winning the Mixed Doubles at Edinburgh in 1986. Charlton was fortunate enough then for Mike to bring his medals, having also won bronze in the team’s event, and put on a bit of an exhibition – as well as a coaching clinic for the juniors of the day. Mike returned to Charlton on a further couple of occasions in the late ‘80s to run some coaching clinics during school holidays. Surprisingly, as Mike approaches 60, this was his first venture onto the Veteran’s court – with the family/town connection the lure to do so.

The team had a successful weekend, winning all three of the matches played, playing teams from Keysborough, Western Suburbs (Altona) and Doncaster-Templestowe. Playing a format of doubles and mixed doubles, across Saturday and Sunday, the team managed to win each match by around 50 points.

BACK TO BACK Lucinda Holmes-Brown has proven that last year was no

fluke, the talented teenager has gone back to back in becoming the 2019 Charlton Badminton Club Ladies’ Champion. All grades played a round robin style format for this year’s Singles championships. In all, there were five grades of competition played across the ladies and men. Players taking a few points to adjust to the rarely played singles format – some playing singles

for the first time, while others were left trying to remember what singles was all about – no doubt a very different game, tactically and physically to the doubles format that the Charlton players have become accustomed to over recent years.

Lucinda won the Ladies’ A grade championship after not dropping a set, however faced stiff competition from eventual runner up Abby Thompson—finally prevailing 31-28 after trailing for most of what was an absorbing match. A three-way countback was required to separate Abby from Naomi Fitzpatrick and Morgan Crisp after all three won one match each.

The B Grade Ladies was a hotly contested affair, won by Imogen Stewart – winning all five of her matches, including defeating sister Charlotte and mum Carolyn. A countback was also required to determine the runner-up after Jemimah Webb and Nat Bourke both recorded three wins a piece. With a superior for & against percentage, Nat Bourke was awarded Runners-Up honour. Tahlia Casey-White continued her introduction to badminton, and whilst not coming away with a prize, no doubt added to her badminton education.

In the men’s A grade, 3 past club champions took to the court - Brian Heenan, Charlie Patullo and Troy Heenan were joined by Stephen Webb in the pool of four. Winning all three of his matches was Troy Heenan to be crowned 2019 Club Champion – for the first time since 1991, after moving with his young family back home late last year. 2017 Winner Charlie Patullo prevailed in his other two matches to claim runners-up, beating Stephen 31-29 in doing so.

Men’s B Grade was taken out by Anthony Stewart, matching daughter Imogen’s feats in the ladies B Grade, winning all three of his matches 31-26, 31-21 and 31-11. Lachlan Holmes-Brown finished as runner-up with his only loss being to Anthony. Tim Smyth defeating Ethan Needs 31-30 to claim third place in their section in a very entertaining match, with the final point being a mad scramble in which Tim literally scraped over the line. Ethan not outclassed though in any of his matches with 31-26 being his heaviest loss of the night.

Meanwhile in the Men’s C Grade – the young brigade of Jackson Zagame, Bailey Dixon and Mason Heenan battled out to 41 points. Bailey prevailed after two great sets of badminton defeating both Jackson and Mason. Mason picked up the runners-up trophy defeating Jackson 41-29 to complete the night.

The final championships of 2019 – the Mixed Doubles, will be played on Tuesday the 20th of August, names to be entered by the 13th please.

CHARLTON JUNIOR BADMINTON HITS BALLARAT The strength of Charlton’s junior badminton program was on

show on Sunday in Ballarat. Four teams, each comprising of four players, competed in the 2019 Vic Country Cup against teams drawing from significantly larger population bases in Ballarat, Geelong, Wyndham, Mitcham and Kilsyth. It was testament to the commitment of the families and committee in Charlton to badminton, that such a small rural community was able to be represented against much larger metropolitan centres. Huge thanks to Rae and Brian Heenan for organising our teams to compete. Whilst not able to bring home any medals from the day’s play, each of the participants will have learned an enormous amount from the exposure of playing against different players and in a team format – playing both singles and doubles in the unisex event.

In Under 11, the team comprising of Seb Zagame, Ethan Soulsby, Sheena Fitzpatrick and Murphy Fitzpatrick, were able

to win one of their four matches on the day. This team played against some children with very bright futures in the sport of badminton and acquitted themselves extremely well, playing with great etiquette and teamwork.

The Under 13 squad had a great day of badminton finishing third in their pool winning two of four matches. They were represented by Nick Thompson, Elise Fitzpatrick, Fletcher Holmes-Brown and Isabel Soulsby.

Unfortunately the Under 15 team of Bailey Dixon, Tyler Riley, Tahli Roberts and Ned Zagame were outclassed on the day, playing against some very strong teams. No doubt their badminton will improve as a result of the day.

Our Under 19 team (two of whom were eligible for U15 and the other two first year U17’s) while not winning a match out of the four played, the team of Lucinda Holmes-Brown, Mason Heenan, Jackson Zagame and Patrick Soulsby battled hard throughout the day, playing against much older and stronger competitors.

Congratulations to Issy Soulsby and her AFLCV teammates on a successful tournament in Sunbury. The girls played 6

games for the day and ended up 2nd in their pool, winning 5 games. In the preliminary final they played the Sunbury Sonics who ended up on top of their pool. The final was very exciting with the final score in the Sonics favour 12 goals to 10

Well done Isabel on a great day of netball, the club is extremely proud of your achievements. Well done to your parents for their commitment to your netball also.

Geddes (Donald) Ned Gorrie (St Arnaud) Tadhg Lawry, and Patrick Sheehan (both Birchip) all gained selection to participate in the Vline Under 15 regional carnival from July 1st to 3rd. The academy had 2 teams, Bendigo Blue and Bendigo Gold, who played against Sunraysia, Central Mallee and Goulburn Murray.

Bendigo Blue managed 1 win, narrowly beating a winless Bendigo Gold on the final day. The second day of the carnival saw the 125 participants involved in a development day. The Bendigo Pioneers explained the importance of recovery and spoke about the process of being involved with them. That evening a dinner was held at the Coomealla Sports Club where Richmond Football Club representatives Craig McCrae and Neil Balme were guest speakers.

58 participants have been initially selected to train for the V/Line cup which is held in September. Hayden Geddes is to be congratulated on making this selection. Overall the boys had an enjoyable and informative few days. Above: Issy Soulsby

President Troy Heenan.

On Aug 17th this year, many CFHNC teams are celebrating a milestone year since their premierships. Actually, for all of them, it is just a good excuse to get together in the new Charlton Park facility. What a wonderful achievement this facility is, testament to the dedication and hard work of the committee and many more people.

In the Hockey, the 1989 premiership will be celebrated. In the netball, the gatherings will be to celebrate the success of

1978 A Grade, 2009 A Grade, 1969 B Grade, 1978 B Grade, 1979

B Grade, 2008 B Grade, 2009 B Grade, 1968 Under 16, 1978 Under 15 & 2008 Junior B.

In the footy, the celebrations will be around the seniors who won the flag in 2009 & 1989 (pictured below), the reserves in 2009 and the U16s in 1979 and 1999.

All players (both past and present), committee and supporters

are invited to attend this function, which should see the new facility used to its fullest, and exactly in the manner for which it was

designed— to bring people together for the enjoyment of all.

INAUGURAL PRESIDENT'S CUP Charlton hosted the inaugural President's Cup between

Wedderburn and Charlton on Sunday 30th June. Charlton President, Anthony Hargreaves, had been up early attending to last minute preparations and had the course, following the 25 mm of rain, in excellent condition.

Wedderburn Club President, Keith Bird, arrived in his "Fairlane Golf" car accompanied by "First Lady" Glenda, whom it was noted looked absolutely stunning, (could have been straight from the Logies) as she alighted from the car wearing freshly pressed jeans and a contrasting polo top. Keith was escorted by his carefully chosen team, including no less than 6, either current, or former Club Champions. He had also included a handful of 'B' grade scrubbers for a more balanced team. They had travelled from areas including Wychitella, Wedderburn Junction, Glenalbyn and Fenton's Creek (by marriage), with apologies from Berrimal.

Charlton's President Anthony had been more inclusive and had a heavily weighted team comprising mainly out of form "B" and "C" grade golfers. He had players from all areas of his catchment including Buckrabanyule, Terrapee, Lake Marmal, Yeungroon, Nicholls Plains, Charlton South and Wooroonook.

The steaks were hot, the beer cold and the track heavy. Enthusiasm was high as 24 golfers took to the fairways, however the first groups in were indicating that Wedderburn had an early lead. Just as Charlton began to close the gap with Chris Mathews top score of 39 points and Peter Sexton's 38, Wedderburn clawed back with Keith Bird, Cam Taylor and Jill Millie all recording 37 points. The final result was Wedderburn winning by a very fine margin with an average score of 34 and Charlton averaging 33.

Best scorers for Charlton were Chris Mathews 39, Peter Sexton 38, John Headon 36, Wendy Laffin 36 and Anthony Hargreaves 36.

Wedderburn's best scorers were Keith Bird, Cam Taylor and Jill Millie all on 37. Trophies were also given to the best scores in the mystery pairings. Peter Sexton and Graham Nesbit, Anthony Hargreaves and Keith Bird, also Jill Millie and John Headon all had scores of 73 combined stableford points. Next year Charlton is looking forward to playing in Wedderburn and hopefully bringing home the 'President's Cup' in 2020.

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS The Kara Kara Golf Association played the Ladies Champion of

Champions event at Wycheproof Golf Course on Thursday 11th July.

Weatherwise the day was very cold, windy and showery, which made playing conditions difficult.

It was an exciting day for Charlton representative in the Bronze Division, Rebecca Heenan, who returned home as the Champion in this section! She had a great score of 47 for the morning 9 holes (to be leading the field) followed by a 110 in the afternoon.

At the end of the day Rebecca and Julie McLennan were tied! A three hole play off followed with Bec being the victor. Rebecca had her father Stuart caddying for her—a very proud Dad at the end of the day.

Rebecca played golf at Medway a number of years ago. She has adapted very well to the sand scrapes and she is very much enjoying her golf home in Charlton.

The last time a Charlton lady won the Bronze Division Championship was in 2005, when Wendy Laffin also had to survive a three way playoff.

This year Wendy was competing in the Silver Division of the Championship, with Anne Kenny as her caddie. Wendy scored well (50, 89) to be runner-up, ending 4 strokes behind the Champion Mandy Male (Donald).

August 2019

Contributed by Patty Saltmarsh Hi folks, well Ted and I are back from traipsing around

NSW. Very dry in some places and green in others but not as lush as what Charlton is looking.

Winter bowls are rolling along, every Saturday at 12:30 pm at the club.

While the numbers aren’t gigantic, the enthusiasm is, with some die-hards heading off to Wycheproof on Wednesday as well, meeting under the bridge at 12:15.

Next month we will be having a working bee to try and replace the grass on the banks. Big job and we will need many hands on deck when the time comes.

Preparation for next season is now underway. Confirmation received that we will have a display from Jack High at the Ladies Tournament day in October. Good time to replace or get new accessories. Jack High is now being run by a young man [23] and he will also help with some sponsorship at some stage [details not yet known].

In the last two months we have seen the passing of two Life Members.

VALE Marge Hendy left us on the 20th June 2019, having joined

us in 1971. She was President of the associates 6 times, B Grade Singles Champion and Singles Champion twice, winning in the same year as her husband Norm.

Marge was awarded Life Membership in season 2006-07 in appreciation of her many years of service to the club and in many positions.

VALE Mavis McGurk 7th July 2019. Mavis was a foundation

member of the Associates (as the Ladies were known then). She was President 4 times, and on Match and Pennant selection for

many years. Mavis was our caterer from 2000 to 2010, setting very high standards for all who followed her.

Mavis was also awarded Life Membership in season 2006-07.

Both ladies were well respected within the wider bowling community and their ongoing interest and support will be missed.

George has had a bit of a hot time with his chimney. Hopefully all is well now and the nights are not too cold.

See you on the green soon. New and returning members

welcome to stop by on a Saturday.

Charlton Croquet Club A Golf Croquet Social Day was held at the Charlton Croquet

Club on Thursday 27th June. Players came from Boort, Donald, Golden Square, Horsham, Swan Hill, Eaglehawk & Charlton. Five players had 4 wins each so the number of hoops made were needed to decide the winners. Val Bourke (Charlton) had 35 hoops so was the winner. Runner up was Betty Sleeman (Eaglehawk) with 33 hoops followed by Ian Potter (Boort) 32 hoops, Jak Barber & Ron Arnold (Eaglehawk) both with 31 hoops.

The morning play was won by Ron Whykes (Swan Hill) with 18 hoops and the afternoon winner was Keith Bell (Eaglehawk). The secret score was won by Elaine Baker. Jak Barber & Ron Whykes each had 6 jump shots while Peter O’Brien and Don Currie had 2 holes in one.

Murray Valley Croquet Association Some people may think Croquet is a summer sport but during the

winter months the Charlton Croquet Club has been involved in activities organised by the Murray Valley Croquet Association. On 11th July Maurice Cevaal-Hewitt, an accredited coach for the Victorian Croquet Association, conducted a Golf Croquet Coaching session at Charlton. The participants all benefited from the day.

On Saturday 20th July eight Charlton members travelled to Swan Hill to participate in the 2nd of the Round Robin series which involved Charlton, Swan Hill & Boort Clubs. This was a successful social day for the clubs. Anne Kenny won the Association Croquet section.

On Monday 29th July an Association Croquet coaching day was held at Charlton. Ken Bald from Kalimna Park (Horsham) was the

coach. He began the day with 3 beginners & then developed the skills of more experienced players. Once again all participants benefited from the day.

The next Murray Valley event is the Association Croquet Tournament at Charlton on 2nd & 3rd September. This will be followed by the Golf Croquet Tournament on 9th & 10th September.

Lions Swap Meet Members of the Charlton Lions Club have been very active in recent days organizing their 2019 Swap Meet. The event will again be held on the second Sunday (13th) in October at Charlton Park commencing at 8 am. Members anticipate that the format of the Swap Meet will be similar to previous years with a variety of different sites including car parts, tools, plants, preserves and other items. Event organiser, Lion Kevin Willey, said that he has been working on the stall holders list for some time and to

date has been promised great support for this year’s meet. He said, “The stall holders were, in the main, very happy with the 2018 meet and all have expressed a keen interest in attending this year’s event.”

The committee, in an endeavour to further promote the static Car and Motorbike Display, has agreed to add prizes of a $50 Fuel Voucher for the ‘Best Car Presented on Club Plates’ and the ‘Best Presented Motorbike – Any Plates’.

If you would like to have a stall in this year’s Swap Meet please contact Kevin Willey, Ross Lane or Garry Larmour who will be very happy to make the necessary arrangements for you.

The Lions Swap Meet suffered several years ago with a bad weather experience however it has been building up over the past couple of years. The committee believe it is fast becoming a social event not to be missed so we recommend that you put it in your diary.

The 13th of October will be a fun day in Charlton with the Swap Meet, the Rotary Art Show and the Garden Club’s Garden displays all happening.

St Martin’s Messenger

Foundation stone laid at St. Martin’s Church “On Sunday, April 28, at 2.30p.m., almost 20 years since the

idea of a new church was first discussed and decided upon, the foundation stone of the Church of St. Martin, Charlton, was officially laid by the Lord Bishop of St. Arnaud, The Rt. Rev. Allen E. Winter, M.A., Th.D. In September, 1944, Rev. A. Mourell, then Rector of the Parish (who returned to Charlton from Wonthaggi for the above occasion), with members of the parish, decided that a Memorial Church should be built.

Since seasons were not prosperous at that time and Australia was still at war, the project was deferred until recently, when, after much work on the part of parishioners, sufficient finance was in hand to allow plans to be finalised and work on the building actually commenced.

The crowd, numbering about 200, included a very fine representation of folk from all denominations in Charlton, also the other districts of the parish, Wychitella, Buckrabanyule and Wycheproof, as well as from many neighbouring centres. Many former parishioners were present, as well as former clergy and other friends. The official procession was made up of the Rt. Rev. Allen E. Winter, Lord Bishop of St. Arnaud, Canon Reid, Rural Dean of St. Arnaud, Rev. A. Mourell (Wonthaggi), Rev. S. C. Davis (Donald) and Rev. G. B. Lucas (Rector of St. Martin’s).

Following the written order of service, the large crowd joined in the singing of hymns to the accompaniment of Charlton Citizens’ Band, under the direction of Bandmaster W. Heenan, and later in the service, the Bishop took the trowel and officially “set the stone” with these words, In the faith of Jesus Christ, we place this stone in the name of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Ghost. Amen.” The above article was published in the Charlton Tribune, Friday May 3, 1963.

North Central Garden Club Club members and friends travelled to Kilmore and visited the

Silkies Rose Farm, a great chance to see the variety of roses. The highlight of the day was the visit to Marinia Vallina Glass

Blowing Studio, to see the process of design, layout and the firing of the individual pieces. Much of Marinia’s work consisted of some lovely pieces of jewellery, some beautiful crafted cheese platers as well as many mosaic pieces about the garden, including a large wall showing a collection of animals and birds. The Studio is well worth a visit if you are down that way. It is situated at 20 Trainers Drive, Kilmore (0419 255 592)

The next meeting will be August 27th, 2pm at the Lions Lodge. The Competition is Best Bloom or Spike, Indoor Plant & An Arrangement in a Cup & Saucer. New members are most welcome.
