    RD REPORTMore On The Picks...

Deep Purple, "The House of Blue Light",Polygram.... The 12" rolls up a quick 70 adds and#28 debut --but It's interesting to note the listincludes only 6 heavies and one power. That'sbecause the real meat is on the album. Weguarantee you'll find at least two tracks you likebetter, starting with "Call Of The Wild" and "HardRockin' Woman". We expect a few new moves thenext time around, but for now, "Blue Light" is a safeand solid step forward on the upper tier of thecomeback trail.

Los Lobos, "Shakin' Shakin' Shakes"Slash/VVB.... They practically started the Rootsrockresurgence, and "Shakin'" should break 'em evenbigger. Add totals aside, It's the most favorablyreceived new piece of music this week. It's gotflavor, funk --and it rocks. New on 45, with 6heavies, 46 medium anda #48 Hard Hundred debut.Look for at least that many adds next week.

Dave Edmunds, "The Wanderer", Col.... Wemay still be waiting for Dave's genius to gain theuniversal regard he continues to enjoy at the radiolevel-but we're also waiting for him to make a badsong. And here's another distinctive, rocking coverof a track just ripe for the re -do. The man has fewequals live and we actually feel "The Wanderer"could be a legit hit.

Pseudo Echo, "Living In A Dream", RCA....They're already a certified monster down under, what with a current #1 single there and a trackrecord to match. This action packed number leadsthe way on the first U.S. release, featuring sparklingremixes on five of their top 10 Australian hits. It'sout of the box on KTX0, WDHA, KZEL and half adozen more. Watch it cross AOR, pop and dance.

Concrete Blonde, "True", IRS.... The ChrissieHynde comparisons abound, and rightly so. Thevocals and attitude are similar, but this band is thefurthest thing from a studied clone. They offercool, cutting guitars and excellent songwriting inaddition to Johnette's gritty, plaintive vocals --andwith the likes of Redbeard, Carter Alan, Beth Keppleand Skid Roadie already raving, we're expectingfast and furious first quarter breakout status here. One listen.

Brighton Rock, "We Came to Rock", Atco....Here also you'll find several surprisingly airworthydepth cuts considering their baby band status. They may be new to you, but Brighton Rock havepaid their dues up north, with a successful Ep lastyear and plenty of touring. Anthem rock is alwaysthe most direct line to those actives --and based onour sampler tape feedback this one's a winner inthe core rock countdown.

The Stranglers, "Always The Sun", Epic....About the only thing this tune has going against itis the group's name. It's an unfortunate holdoverfrom the first Punk Invasion, because the texture ofthe tune is as civilized and subtle as anything outthere. I hear Simple Minds with Mark Knopfler onvocals. I know it's a long shot, but live with thistrack and that slow build and beautifully layeredchorus will close your eardrums --but not yourwindpipe.

Spoons, "Bridges Over Borders",Polygram.... Hate to double up on the SimpleMinds comparison, but that's also the sound here --though with measureably more flash and bite. Wereally like the contemporary production andarrangment and the rivetting build is not to bedenied --but it is bit unusual so listen more thanonce. Our Canadian stations have already donewell with this number and we're predicting anequally enthusiastic reception on this side of theline.

Colin James Hay, "Hold Me", Col.... The introsuggests Mr. Hay has been spending time with PaulSimon's latest, but once the song develops it'sclear this man's working his own groove. This coolblend of the tropics and the outback is refreshingand different, and should be just the vehicle neededto drive him home up and down the dial. Just ataste of a surprisingly well developed album.

    QUICK PICKS

Iron Maiden, "Stranger In A Strange Land",Capitol... It's as automatic a core rocker as theyget, sure, but in this case we feel there's quality togo beyond. "Stranger" maintains their trademarkminor key ambience with the band's most massappeal break and chrorus ever. The productionrivals that of just about rock outfit out there andwith platinum plus sales thus far, the tour and MTVexposure, It's time to think about them in a wholenew light.

Lone Justice, "I Found Love", Geffen.... I'm afan of even Maria's most twangy work, but totallyagree with the band's recent swing to a morerock/less country approach. But it's definitely not aneither/or situation. Here's the track that bestreflects the new configuration's ability to kick asswithout losing her unique earthy appeal. Catch iton Saturday Night Live?

Vinnie Vincent, "No Substitute", Chrysalis....Vinnie's solo continues to turn heads in theChrysalis sales department. By metal standardsthe new 12" is practically a ballad, so check it out ifyou thought the whole Lp was off limits. We'retalking lush harmony overdubs with minimalcrunch --and all those flashy guitar pyrotechnicsyou know his fans crave. Surprisingly radiorelatable.

Hipsway, "The Honeythief" Columbia.... Iconsidered this the sleeper on our sampler, andwas pleasantly surprised at the number ofprogrammer positives --including Beth Kepple atWKLS. This Scottish blue eyed soul band has thebest shot at a four way (AOR/CHR/Urban/NewAlternative) crossover I've heard since INXS hit thescene. Hooky and believable.

It's now heavy at 32,power at 2 more, with 5 adds taking the count to115. "Ship of Fools" moves to #14, pulling thealbum 28-16.

Ann Wilson, "Best Man in the World",Capitol.... Here's the big winner in the increasedepartment with 42. Of 114 now on board, 22 list Itpower with 61 now heavy. That's heavy to powerplay at over 70% of those playing. Also top 5requested at 11. Note the 12-4 Hard Hundredadvance.

Huey Lewis, "Jacob's Ladder", Chrysalis....The extended live version is just what the doctorordered to cut down on wear and tear. Crossformat play helps push the Lp and single back intotop 10 territory, courtesy of 32 play Jumps, 14powers, and and 68 heavies.

Stevie Ray Vaughan, "Willie The Wimp",Epic.... Now for something completely new. They've heard the Wondercover so give 'em thealbum's best unreleased track. It's got 11 adds and23 total, Including WOUR, KLPX, KBCO, WKLS,WDHA, KZEW, KRQR and WDHA. Should chart nextweek.

KBC, "America", Arista.... 29 play ups since ourlast sheet Is the Increase total to beat. Track Twoboasts five powers and 49 heavies, with currentplay 109 deep. The album relfects 17-13, behind a27-13 Hard Hundred move.

Billy Idol, "Sweet Sixteen", Chrysalis.... Bynow we all know "Gun" is your basic gone gator, sohere's a quick mention for the album's best ballad."16" hits the list at #97, with WWCK, WHCN, KWHL,KRQR, CFOX and KISW among the 17 already in.The album's a strong #8.

Smithereens, "Behind the Wall of Sleep",Enigma... Wake up and smell the glove --it's unhipto miss this one. 18 holiday (won't It be great to getback to "this week/last week"?) increases and 2adds improve the overall song ranking 30-22, whilemoving the Lp numbers 26-22. It's a top fiver atWIZN, WXRC, WZEW, KOZZ, WAPL, and WQBK,with 91 adds to date.

Til Tuesday, "Coming up Close", Epic.... Youcouldn't dream up a better female/adult item interms of melody and power. It's got a 50-33Increase, with adds at WKFM, WQBK and WRCNand ups from WKFM, WQBK, and WKLC. 21 of 79now playing list heavy play, moving the Lp 31-24.Nice words from WPDH's Pam Brooks, "Thisbeautiful Lp not only works well for upper womenbut guys, too. The men love Aimee and this is awonderful second effort."

Pretenders, "My Baby", WB.... Our pick fromday one picks up a whopping 7 position gain totake the top slot. Lock up 24 powers and 71 heaviesand that's what you get. If youy've got it medium orlighter, you're late out of the gate. Anybody ready toget serious about "Hymn To Her"?

Bon Jovi, "Living On A Prayer", Mercury....Here's the biggest overall point gainer since ourreport, as evidenced by Jon's 19-2 progress. Youknow a five or six position move inside the top 20spells moxie plus, and that pretty much says it allregarding this high Jump. Now power at 25, heavy at64 and #1 Most Requested. Give that man a newpair of Jeans.

Robert Cray, "Smokin' Gun", Polygram....For coming out of nowhere (at least format wise)just a couple of months ago, Mr. Cray now boasts astrong 47 heavy report count and 8 powers. The"on" column Is 127 deep, 31 of which showincreased air time over the break. "Gun" grabs an18-7 liner, and with smokin' stats like that you'vebetter think take two. We recommend "Guess IShowed Her".

Jason and the Scorchers, "Golden Ball andChain", EMI.... No slowdown at all here. When lastwe checked, "Ball" was at #25, and our all newstats for 87 have it markedly more muscular at #16.And whoda thunk it three months ago? The rotationsituation finds 5 powers, 28 heavies and 22 overallincreases. With that kind of power portfolio, time tothink about two minutes of fun with "ShotgunBlues".

Tesla, "Modern Day Cowboy", Geffen.... Wecontinue to see solid growth. "Cowboy" climbs 89-72 behind five more adds, 39 to date and recentplay -ups from KISS, KRIX, WAQX, KDJQ, WDIZ,WDHA, and WAPL Healthy top five calls, too, withKILO, KNAC, KRIX, KDJQ, WRCN, and KWHLleading the way. Also note the #50 Lp debut.

John Eddie, "Pretty Little Rebel",Columbia... I don't have a ton of call letters oroverwhelming stats to throw at you other thanJohn's 100-89 Underline. But I will say that basedon WMMR's onoing play this track is a hit if you'lljust give It the room. Put it on the radio and see foryourself.

PASS THE CATCH UP, PLEASEWe've been off the air over the holidays, and so

much has happened. Hirings, signings, moves, numbers, the flu, and lots of people who won't get touse that 1987 desk calendar they bought. Here's alook at news old and new:

RAG 1, KRESKIN 0As predicted three weeks ago in NOISE (and

absolutely nowhere else), WDVE PD Greg Gillispiewill join Burkhart/Abrams/Douglas/Elliott as anassociate. Starting Feb. 1, Greg says that "he will bedealing primarily with AOR and doing liason work withrecord companies."

"Greg did and excellent job in closing us," notesDwight Douglas, B/A/D/E President and a man withtwo first names. He also said they were going to re-organize the entire firm in terms of radio stations --according to corporate desires, personalities, andregional flight plans.

What will the the thrust of Superstars in PalmSprings next week?

"No great '80-20' type revelations. I think there'll besome very unique research concepts unveiled bothfrom our company and others," says Dwight,"seminars on motivation, and how to managesuccess."

Douglas also hinted that the future of the companyinvolves a "big picture" (station ownership) concept.

B/A/D/E is still looking for one more road warrior.WDVE VP/GM Bob Schutt continues the search forGillispie's successor.

KZEWChanges were Immediate as new owner Anchor

took delivery on Dallas' heritage AOR. Gone are PDRob Barnett, MD Cindy Bailen, a traffic reporterand a sports reporter. Jon Sinton is signed toconsult, KRQX (the ZOO's AM sister) PD DennisAnderson assumes programming duties at KZEW.Morning driver Temple Lindsey is now acting MD.

"The 'Pure Rock' flag is raised high at the Zoo,"said Barnett. "Before taking over Jan. 1, the newowners decided to control music and programmingwith help of Jon Sinton and the AM PD. I wish themall well.I feel tons of good about the last two years, andalthough we suffered a recent setback in the morningshow, we were able to bring the Zoo to its highestnumbers since 1982. I'm inspired with creative energyand juice for what lies ahead."

"We'll have great success in Dallas for threereasons," said Sinton. " 1) KZEW is the heritage radiostation in the marketplace, 2) Dennis Anderson

has a terriffic understanding of programming ingeneral and the Dallas market in specific and 3)Anchor Media doesn't know how to do it anyway butright."

MTVSpeaking of Jon Sinton, our spies at MTV have

spotted him and partner John Parikhal in thebuilding on Broadway way too many times. Look forthese two to sign the channel to their JointCommunications firm (if they haven't already).

PRESSING SUITSAs ex-WLVQers Pat & Wags arrived at

WRIF/Detroit 12/18 to start mornings, the legalmachinery was kick started. Baabyy.

"We have filed against Silver Star, which is theparent corporation of WRIF, for 'contractualinterference," WLVQ VP/GM Tom Thom told NOISE."They knew Pat & Wags were under contract andcontinued to go after them. We warned them. We toldthem 'hands off' and they ignored us."

"It's great," said Pat from one of those Holiday Innsall of us have come to know so well. "Here inWolverine country, Wags can put his Ohio Statediploma on the windshield, and we can park in thehandicapped spaces."

Meanwhile, back at the Buckeye Billing Banger, MDLee Randall put his hands on the wheel as actingPD. "He is running the show," said Thom. "I feel hewill ultimately be named PD."

"I'm just gonna make it clean and mean," saidRandall. Wendy Steele moves into the MD slot. Thestation continues its search for a morning show. Staytuned.

EPAEPA has confirmed Don Grierson as the new SR

VP/A&R, replacing Lennie Petze. Word on the streetis that Lennie has a P&D deal with Epic. EPAVP/Marketing Ron McCarrell goes to Capitol.

SEATTLESeattle got its new AOR Monday (1/5). Fresh from a

talent raid on KISW's morning and afternoon shows,KTKQ changed its calls to KXRX. Seattle radio vetLarry Snider has been named music director andwill do the midday show.

KPOI/WKDFLarry Bruce, who also has two first names, has

bagged WKDF/Nashville and KPOI/Honolulu."I am not a consultant," said Bruce. "I provide

programming and promotional support services. As aword, 'consultant' has evolved to the level of usedcar and insurance salesmen. The word been misusedand distorted."

AS THE DIAL TURNSJeffrey Scott, late of KBPI mornings, and

(according to a high White House official) the odds-on favorite to do mornings at KOME, is about to getmarried. Let's face it --in a business where people getunmarried more than the other way around, that byitself is big news.

But wait!! There's more!!While at KBPI, he and MD/PM driver Lynn Wells

fell in love. And it seems that being one time zone, three states, and seven area codes away from eachother was just too much for either. Quite a story.

"If I wasn't so happy for her, I'd be ill," says KBPIPD Tom Hunter. "She's able to do so many things

VIGIL "I AM WAITING" (CHRYSALIS)Here's a one -listen grabber from the line up whocaught early attention with the '86 indie single"Whistle In The Dark" (on the forthcoming Lp). Whocan resist rock steady rhythms, laced withatmospheric guitar breaks? And Bauhaus fans willappreciate Jo Conner's dramatic vocal work. It's awarm Intro to an impressive album debut, as furtherevidenced by the haunting "I Love You Equinox"on the flip.... A quickstarter for '87.

    ALSO NEW...

MINUTEFLAG (SST) What probably originatedas a side project will turn out to be a hard -to -findcollector's item, and when news of this line up hits,it will fly out of alternative retail bins. Members ofthe Minutemen and Black Flag have another goodthing in common with "Fetch The Water" --acharming, funny tune that sparks fond memories oftwo American bands that set the stage for today'sprogressive movement. True value rock.

SINGLE FILELOS LOBOS "SHAKIN' SHAKIN' SHAKES"(SLASH/WB) It's the #3 Most Added track witha #35* Alternative debut. 58 new adds beckon thoseplaylists too packed to play it this week, andwitness the radio raves in the Comments sectionthis week. Early action is highlighted by heavyairplay at KKBR, KNCN, FUEL, WBAB, WFNX, andWTOS.

Worth waiting for.... Here's a few new releasesto watch for In the next few weeks, to do away withthe theory of a slow release schedule after theholidays. C.S. ANGELS (ISLAND) Upper demoswatch out! Produced by Robert Palmer, who pays asurprise vocal visit. HUSKER DU (WB) On theirway to greater radio reality, but hanging on to aperfect edge. MISSION U.K. (POLYGRAM) Theyrock without Mercy for album radio appeal, and arerising up from underground status. BATFISH BOYS(TWIGHLIGHT) Ex -March Violet Simon, brings hisunique style of metal meets mainstream back torecord. Put it in your listen -to pile. HIPSWAY "THEHONEYTHIEF" (COLUMBIA) Anyone, (I meaneveryone) who played the Simple Minds won't thinktwice on this.... CHINA CRISIS (A&M) "Arizona Sky"Is the leadoff track and Don Berns at CFNY hasbegun the story on import.... Look for the new BILLYBRAGG 12", "Greetings To The New Brunette"(ELEKTRA). Dirk DeVault, WGTU observes, "He'sthe most socially relevant artist right now! Still at #1here.".... Looks and sounds like '87 is off to aprogressive start, thanks to a stellar rock radiofinish in '86....

    CONCRETE BLONDESTARTS SOLID...

Carter Alan, WBCN: Concrete Blonde is not another one of thosethrowaway wave bands that you figure college radio will take careof. Johnette's vocals are distinctive, the lyrics are provocative andthe instrumentation inventive. Concrete Blonde is a band that isaspiring to be great, and on this debut album they sound like theyhave succeeded.

Redbeard, KTXQ, Dallas: It takes the street smart swagger ofearly Chrissie Hynde and matches it with the breathy coquettishsound of Suzanne Vega and that's the sound of Concrete Blonde.Plus, check out the lyrics to the song "True". They are, indeed.

Beth Kepple, WKLS, Atlanta: "I think she's got the best voice inrock and roll since Chrissie Hynde. It's really wonderful. They'reup at the top of the best new bands.

    MUSIC NEWS

    -Dawn Hood

And now, the latest music news LIVEFROM LONDON, courtesy of CFNY and ourexclusive reporter, LEE CARTER. Lee canbe heard on CFNY's "Sunday MusicMagazine" program and on Live FromLondon aired Wednesday evenings.THE CULT return this month. The group causeda sensation on both sides of the pond, with a hard -edged blend of music that has seemed to cross thenormally impenetrable divide between "new music"and metal, with songs like "She Sells Sanctuary".Now The Cult have a new Lp and a world tourplanned.

The album, as yet untitled, comes out in February. It was recorded Initially in the English town ofOxford with extra mixing In New York by Def Jam'sRick Rubin, whose previous successes haveincluded funk sounds like The Beastle Boys. Justabout to be released here Is the tastier single,"Love Removal Machine". Then In March, The Cultbegin their world tour, starting with a fifteen -datetrek around Great Britain. Details of NorthAmerican dates will be known within the next fewweeks.

BOB GELDOF will also be touring the BritishIsles In the Spring, despite the fact that his recordshave not enjoyed the same enthusiastic responseas they have In the States. Geldof s British record

label, Phonogram, claim they will not be making apenny out of Bob's American success (and ofcourse they waived everything for the Band Aidrecord, too) so they must be getting desperate tosell him here. Geldof s second single release herewill be "Love Like A Rocket" in a few days. He hasalso announced plans to become a television host, claiming that he wants to do on TV for third worldIssues what David Attenborough (distinguishedanimal lover) has done for nature.

Geldof Is not the only person to do well In TheStates without denting the charts here In 1986.Other examples Include Paul Young, The Outfield,John Parr, Boys Don't Cry, Wang Chung, JulianLennon, Pete Townshend, The Moody Blues andAndy Taylor.

SIOUXSIEE AND THE BANSHEES release abrand new single on 9th January In the U.K. called"Wheels Of Fire". The lyrics are penned by BobDylan (?)! Their next Lp comes out in February. The 12" will have two extra tracks - "Shooting TheSun" and "Sleepwalking On A High Wire".

CRAIG GANNON, a recently recruited guitaristfor The Smiths, has left the group after only havingjoined them last May. Gannon was previously asession musician for Aztec Camera, The Bluebellsand The Colourfield and says that when he joined

    continuedJANUARY 9, 1987

  • THE MUSIC NEWSThe Smiths he did not think he would be merely inthe background again, and "always playing secondfiddle to Johnny Marr." Gannon says that he hasgreater ambitions, but stresses that he still gets on"very well" with the group.

I reported before Christmas that three members ofthe recently defunct MADNESS would be forminga new outfit called THE WASP FACTORY.However, Carl, Suggs and Chris Foreman havediscovered another London group with the samename - so they will have to think of another.

THE FALL have been certainly causing heads tostir with their new production at the RiversideStudios In the London area of Hammersmith with"Hey Luciana", the story of Pope John Paul I who in1978 reigned for only days in the vatican and died inhis sleep. Mark E. Smith has been quick to pointout that he is not offering any conspiracy theories;indeed London reviewers seem to have been tryingto work out precisely what the play is offering. Ithas received the most schizophrenic reviews I'veever seen for anything! In addition to the play andpromoting their excellent single of the same name,The Fall found time to play a free concert in theirnative Manchester over the Christmas period;supported by A Certain Ratio, Britain's young jazzgenius Courtney Pine, The Jazz Defectors andSelectors singer Pauline Black.

As in their native U.S. THE DEAD KENNEDYShave run Into censorship problems with their newLp "Bedtime For Democracy". The U.K. has noequivalent to the Washington Wives or The MoralMajority, but occasionally large bodies like the BBCor retailers refuse to handle product. It's with thenational retail chain HMV that the Dead Kennedys'record label, Alternative Tentacles, is having acensorship row. In early December, the recordcompany discovered that HMV were removing a 12 -page newspaper, which came as part of the album, before selling it over the counter. When the recordcompany complained, HMV merely withdrew the Lpaltogether. The retail chain claim that their decisionis pending the result of their committee's findings,as to whether "Bedtime For Democracy"contravenes the British "Obscene Publications Act".The group have recently been involved in a courtcase in the U.S. over alleged obscenity in their lastLp "Frankenchrist".

The STYLE COUNCIL return this month with newmaterial. A new single is called "It Didn't Matter"and their next Lp is "The Cost Of Loving". Judgingby recent performances from the band, their soundis becoming flavoured with a lot more soft soul, asopposed to the jazz -influenced sound the outfithave championed thus far.

Representing the intelligent end of teeny mags,Britain's most popular music paper is "Smash Hits".With a readership of over 500,000, it outsells itsnearest rival by four to one, with their magicformula of well written features, gossip, colour pin-ups, songwords, trivia and puzzles. (Their daughterpublication is America's "Star Hits"). They have justpublished their readers' poll, which will no doubt beread in every record company boardroom In theU.K., as the indisputed, most accurate insight intcthe opinions of the young teenager. Best groupwas a-ha, with the worst voted as SIGUE SIGUESPUTNIK. Most Promising New Act was THE

HOUSEMARTINS. Best Male Singer, MORTENHARKET; Best Female Singer was MADONNAwho also picks up best Lp with "True Blue". Bestsingle was DURAN DURAN's "Notorious" whilethe worst was voted as "The Chicken Song" bySPITTING IMAGE. Best video, "Sledgehammer"by PETER GABRIEL. The worst? MADONNA's"True Blue"! The Very Most Horrible Thing isGEORGE MICHAEL, according to SH readersand The Most Completely Useless Person wasvoted as MARGARET THATCHER, withSAMMY FOX coming in a hot second!

Speaking of MORTEN HARKET, give Mr. Bulge -in -the -Trousers a medal! Sitting in London, thesinger read of a 13 -year -old girl in his nativeNorway by the name of Monica who has a cripplingbirth defect. Because of this, she couldn't riskgoing to an a -ha concert even though, like manygirls of her age, Morten is Monica's dreamboy. Thea -ha singer arranged for the young Norwegian to flyto London and spend the day with him. She waspicked up at the airport by Harket's limo, stayed thenight at a top London hotel, taken next day to TheHard Rock Cafe where she met up with Morten andthe two tucked into hamburgers, while fans battledoutside. After a visit to the giant HMV shop to buysome of her favourite records, she spent the rest ofthe afternoon with the entire trio at Pal and Mags'shared apartment. It does not seem to be thatmuch of a mere publicity stunt either. Only oneBritish magazine, Number One, uncovered theseevents. Well, what a chap!

NEW MODEL ARMY, who were once barredfrom The United States for having "no artistic

recently revoked. On their recent tour of NorthAmerica, they broke down between Montreal andToronto, in sub -zero temperatures, with a brokenheater! They put out a call on CB Radio and wererescued by - of all people - Metallica, whohappened to be nearby.

Congrats to MIKE PETERS of The Alarm, whohas Just announced his engagement after a four -month romance. His bride to be deflates the myththat rock stars must marry leggy models in Haiti -she's a 19 -year -old Welsh speaking college student,Julie Jones, who met Mike at his local pub in hishometown of Bangor, Wales.

DEAD OR ALIVE, whose novelty seems to beflagging somewhat over here, try their luck with anew single this month, "Something In My House".One version of the single comes with a pop-upsleeve. Gosh! The next DOA Lp comes out in theU.K. on 2nd February, "Mad Bad And Dangerous ToKnow".

A name to watch out for are THE THRASHINGDOVES, a new A&M signing, who impressedcritics and music lovers alike with their single"Matchstick Flotilla" (about the boat people). Theyhave a new single in early January called "BeautifulImbalance", with their debut Lp to follow soon.Vocally they sound not unlike Lloyd Cole, butmusically they are a lot heavier - conscious rock atits best.

    CHARTS

The top -selling reggae single is Maxl Priest's"CRAZY LOVE" (Ten). It's an instantly enjoyable, soft, reggaefied version of the Van Morrissonclassic, originally to be found on "MOONDANCE".The number one Independent Label single is "THECARAVAN OF LOVE" by The Housemartins (Go!Discs). The top lndie Lp is "BEDTIME FORDEMOCRACY" by The Dead Kennedys (AlternativeTentacles). Kate Bush's "THE WHOLE STORY"continues to be blocked from the top spot in thenational Lp charts by two singles compilationalbums, "HITS 5" at 2 and "NOW THAT'S WHAT ICALL MUSIC" 8 at Number One. But she continuesto have the best selling CD, and the biggest seeingrock home video. Confusion Iles elsewhere in theLp charts, with obvious best-sellers and MORChristmas Lps making a sudden surge but littleelse.

    THE UK TOP 40 SINGLES

New Entries: New at 33 "THE BOY IN THEBUBBLE" by Paul Simon. Interesting to look at allthe music critics' year-end choices. Whether theywere biased towards metal, or punk or soul,"Graceland" made every list. New at 27 "HYMN TOHER" by The Pretenders. Politely ignoring thegroanworthy title, this is one of the very sweetest, most haunting cuts off "GET CLOSE" and a realgrower.

Climbers: Up 3 to 25 "THE MIRACLE OF LOVE" byThe Eurythmics. A painfully slow climber for Annieand Dave in the heat of the intense Christmasmarket. It's interesting to note that those who havebecome recent tax exiles of the U.K. have had lesssuccess, with their subsequent lower profile.Howard Jones' follow up to a moderate top twentyhit, "YOU KNOW I LOVE YOU" didn't even get intothe top 50! And "HEARTBREAK BEAT" by ThePsychedelic Furs hardly got a look into the Top 100!Up 12 to 22 "SANTA CLAUS IS ON THE DOLE" bySpitting Image - "the dole" being slang for welfarecheques - the token seasonal Jokey record.Climbing from 38 to 18 "NO MORE THE FOOL" byElkie Brooks. She may have been a rock and rolleronce in her Vinegar Joe days, but today she'sstrictly MOR. Up 17 to 15 "DREAMIN" by Status Quo.Their almost two -decade formula of goodt:meboogie music has surprisingly never caught on inthe States. (It was they who opened "Live Aid" with"ROCKING ALL OVER THE WORLD"). AOR stationsshould dip their toe in and give it a try - I think itwould go down really well. Up 6 to 15, theinfectious soul sounds of Jaki Graham with "STEPRIGHT UP", and in a similar vein, The Gap Band's"BIG FUN" jumps 18 to 12. Leaping 16 to 8, "IS THISLOVE?" by Alison Moyet. Still probably the U.K.'sbest contemporary female vocalist, locked here in asongwriting formula that doesn't seem to be doingher any harm. Up 9 to 7 "CRY WOLF" by a -ha.

The perfect teen band in every way, not least from agreat string of songs like this and considerablemusical talent. Last week Europe's "THE FINALCOUNTDOWN" was bumped from number one by"THE CARAVAN OF LOVE" by The Housemartins -but a late dark horse for the Christmas number onesidled up effortlessly to number 2, the re-released"Reet Petite" by the late Jackie Wilson. This weekit is the official Christmas number one, with TheHousemartins bumped to 2.

Last week's rise of "CARAVAN" to number onemade it the second ever purely vocal record toreach the pole position. The first was coincidentallyexactly two years ago when The Flying Pickets hitthe top spot with an a capelia cover of Yaz's "ONLYYOU". The record that befuddled the bookmakersat the last minute, "REET PETITE", was originally ahit in 1957. No other record has returned to thecharts after such a long intervening period.

Finally, single sales were down by 5 percent thisyear in the U.K. and very few new acts emerged inthe charts in 1986 - with the glorious exception ofThe Housemartins. In an article in "Record Mirror"with the headline "Why is The Top 40 So Awful?"blame is squared on a shift of age groups from 16-20 to 20-30, which also moves the emphasis onalbums and established acts (Ferry, Police, Bush,etc.). There is also, in this much more multi -mediaage, less success to be salvaged from simplyhaving an impressive single. Record companieshave to spend tons of moula grooming acts to begood actors for videos, etc. It's not rock and rollanymore - or Is it? The article points to themeteoric success of The Housemartins: "They arethe very antithesis of the eighties. They're notpretty, they play loads of live gigs, they don't wearloafers, make-up or silly hats. What they do is mixan intelligent appropriation of the tools ofpromotion. What The Housemartins have done isbring chart pop down to its human size again."Where there is life like this, there is hope - as thelikes of Bruce Hornsby has proven on your side ofthe pond.Good records, good radio - It's still there. Happy

    New Year.

JACKSON BROWNE spent his own moneyfunding the video for "Lives In The Balance", thetitle cut to the album he released early last year. The clip is based on footage from documentariesthat Browne has seen "over the last four or fiveyears. I wanted America to see these people'sfaces, who it is we're killing down there." The clipincludes footage of Nicaragua, El Salvador, Vietnamand Watergate. He sent a letter out to radioprogrammers asking them to support the song andthe video, by making the song available to "highschool and college kids to encourage them to thinkabout what's happening in Central America andexamine closely what they are being told by ourgovernment and by the major news media."Browne says, "People are now much more aware ofwhat some of the song says than they ever havebeen. It's not your responsibility in a democracy toblindly trust what is told to you by your leaders. You have to take it upon yourself to find out andmake it your business." The clip is being releasedeven though "Lives In The Balance" is not beingissued as a single, and it was in the works beforethe current Iran arms deal surfaced. "I don't wantto exploit the revelations or what's happening toReagan to sell albums, but if I was trying to make apoint before, It's an even stronger point now."

  • THEHARD REPORT RADIO COMMENTS

Redbeard, KTXQ, DallasI just want to commend the people at the Hard

Report for putting together their sampler tape overthe holidays with so much great new unreleasedmusic. I also want to compliment thefarsightedness of the record companies whosupplied it. Everybody knows that I have been apassionate proponent for getting the music to usprogrammers in advance as often as possible. Thatway when the record comes out we're familiar withit. Then we can give you that add out of the boxthat you're really looking for. There is just nosubstitute for getting the music early and the proofin the pudding. I think I added almost half a dozensongs off the Hard Report sampler over the pasttwo weeks, which has got to be some kind ofrecord. I added the Edmunds, the PsuedoEcho, the Spoons, Los Lobos, and sooner orlater I'm going to add the Concrete Blonde.

Bob Welch, WQBK, AlbanyDon Dixon's "Praying Mantis" moves into

heavy this week due to great phone action and agreat fun sound. Enigma has a winner with thisone.... Getting lots of calls about the EricClapton/Tina Turner duet. People can'tunderstand why it's not on the Tina Turner album,it seems.... Robert Cray's "Smokin' Gun"is alsoanother big request.... And we're backing up theairplay on "Keep Your Hands To Yourself" fromGeorgia Satellites with "Battleship Chains"which is starting to pull in impressive phone calls....And the song that's becoming a staff favorite isCrowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over"....Robin Trower's "No Time" grows on youeverytime you hear it. Thanks to Paul Yeskel forthe CD.

Cathy Down, WLNZ, LansingTake out the party hats, noisemakers and your

favorite abused copy of "Auld Lang Syne" cause1987 is finally here. After the superstar overload of1986, '87 has to be a refresher with new artistscoming to the pedestal's surface. That's why DonDixon, Julian Cope and Dave Adams kickedoff the Lazer's New Year with style. But can't saythe superstars are left far behind like Father Time'cause the Alan Parsons Project and LosLobos are '87 toppers to boot. With a title like"Shakin Shakin Shakes", it kind of brings the oldjitterbug dance out all over again. So with over 350days to go, WLNZ is ready to take on '87 with fullforce.

Harry Reynolds, KOZZ, RenoDave Edmunds is projected for next week.

When I do mobile DJ work, the audience has beenasking for I would like to compliment The HardReport for the sampler tape. It proved to be a veryvaluable tool for helping us look into some thingsand mainly get things together so they're all in oneplace at one time. I hope to see one every week.

Ace Paladino, KRIX, BrownsvilleHello and welcome to 1987. As we welcome

Burkhart/Abrams and our new GM Don Wolfe toKRIX, it promises to be an incredible year, onemonth from now I hope to be sitting in a new officedown the hall from our new state of the art studios. When my mom asked me what I got for Christmas, Itold her some kick ass new owners and a brandnew radio station. Yes, Virginia, there is a SantaClaus. More as it develops.

Catfish, WHMD, HammondI've heard of a song which launched an ad

campaign ("I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing")but a beer spot exposing a Genesis album cut?The phones speak: "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight"""Number one requests for Bon Jovi.... Othersshowing significant action: Don Dixon and RobinTrower has good response from adult males.... Thenew Rob Jungklas CD is great; love the sitarintro. It's our third Jungklas add.... Lookingforward to the Thompson Twins, AlanParsons, and speedy release of the BeatlesCD's.... I like the Crowded House a lot. It's theperfect relief. Where's it been hiding?.... I'm sorry Iheld out so long on Love and Rockets, but it'sgreat.... Considering: The Spoons, Lucy Show.

Phil Thompson, KICT, WichitaWhat a way to bring in the New Year. Some

strange happenings in Kansas City. They werehighlighted by the Rainmakers New Year's EveHomecoming show. This year it was at the UptownTheater. These guys are great fun live and soonwill be heading into the studio to work on theirsecond album. Thanks to Bill Rusch from Polygramfor the excellent seats. By the way, sorry wemissed the party later, but like I said, strangehappenings in KC.... After that and a lazy couple ofweeks, I've recuperated and am ready to get backinto music. My favorite tracks so far in '87 areDeep Purple and the new Los Lobos.... Alsosounding good to me is that new live DaveEdmunds. If this is any indication of the rest ofthe year, it could be another great one for AORradio.... Finally, my New Year's resolution: To tryand return all my music calls.

Bonnie Stacy, KNCN, Corpus ChristiCan't think of a better way to start to '87 Than

with new Deep Purple. Call me a dinosaur if youwant but it's already burning up the phones and Ilove it and I can't wait for the album. And besidesI am a dinosaur.... I'm ecstatic to see such greatstrides were made on Jason & The Scorchers'"Golden Ball And Chain" over the holidays. Thisband deserves it and your listeners deserve them.Try "Shotgun Blues" for a real southern scorch....Berlin's "Pink And Velvet" is just huge on thephones. The combination of Terry Nunn's voiceand David Gilmore's guitar is almost more joy thanone can handle.... And finally, congrats to Stryperand Enigma on reaching that golden plateau....Happy rockin' 1987 to all!

Russ Mottla, WAAF, WorcesterAdds: Deep Purple "Bad Attitude". It continues

the successful re-emergence of a core AORaudience.... I feel like I'm in love with the CrowdedHouse album again. Over the holidays I got a lot oftime to listen to the album. My favorite track on thealbum is "Now We're Getting Somewhere". Killersong.... Kinks "Factory" goes in.... Found a songI'm crazy about on the World Party Album (whichtook me a long time to get into) "PrivateRevolution". I think it will do real well.... We readdedtwo Steve Winwood tracks which is a strangeway to start the year, but that Lp has just notsettled down as far as the audience is concerned."High Life" and "Finer Things" are two tracks thatdeserve exposure.

  • THE RADIO COMMENTSKevin Vargas,KWHL, Anchorage

When the trade magazines close down, the recordindustry took a logical and deserved break. However, just because the trade mags close down, radio didnot. Over the last 3 weeks, we made a good amountof changes. keeping our sound fresh, and giving ashot to many records we've had to put off. Workingabove and beyond the call of duty, were GeoffrySchulmann of Arista, and Michelle Meissner of Elektrawho took advantage of our not closing down and stillcalled in to talk music. I don't know if you'd call thisover dedication or lack of anything better to do but Ihope their bosses realize that they took advance ofopportunity. Looking forward to lots of new rock androll and have I've already been appeased by the newDeep Purple and the Alan ParsonsPrOjeCt.These singles are exactly what you'd expectf.om these bands. Now just get us the albums assoon as possible.

Ty Banks, KQWB, FargoJust would like to say thanx to all companies for

the outstanding record service with a fewexceptions... Have not received the Los Lobos yet,so we're adding it off the cassette; would likeservice as soon as possible. Don't get me wrong, service is generally wonderful, but this time for somereason we've been overlooked. Looking forward to agreat year in '87 and wishing the best to all at theHard Report.

Kim Alexander, WHCN, HartfordWhat a pleasure to be here. This
