Transmission and distribution grids arealready stressed by increasing powerdemands, especially during peakperiods, power flow fluctuations andother disturbances. The growingpenetration of intermittent renewableenergy sources is adding a significantnew source of instability.Saft’s high-power Li-ion modules arethe building blocks for multi-MW, kV-level energy storage solutions. Load levelling, peak shaving and othertypes of dynamic and rapid support areeasy to provide once such storage systemsare in place, enabling electricity utilities

to successfully manage the introductionof intermittent renewable resources. Our energy storage systems also offer arange of ancillary services that improvethe stability, reliability and capacity ofpower networks.

If a substation is operating close to its peakcapacity, network operators may feel forcedto build a new substation and reconfiguretheir distribution feeders, especially ifrenewables are added to the mix.Saft can make it possible to defer thesesorts of major capital investments, or eveneliminate them altogether. By installingrobust and reliable Saft energy storagesystems at strategic points in the network,Distribution Network Operators can relieve

their capacity constraints and increasetheir renewable hosting capabilities. Energy storage can represent asignificantly more cost-effective andimmediate approach to adding capacity,and can provide return on investment in as little as 2 to 3 years. Compact and easy to transport, Saftsolutions also provide additional benefitssuch as dynamic voltage support and theability for intentional islanding.

Saft solutions were a key element of the European Union GROW-DERS (Grid Reliability and Operability withDistributed Generation using FlexibleStorage) project that successfully created a transportable flexible storage system andassessment tool for distribution networkmanagement. Field tests of two 50 kW Li-ionbatteries showed the benefits of energystorage and the grid operators involved were positive about the opportunities.
