“Treasure”

PASTOR ALICE WOLFE The Word of the Month: “TREASURE”

In 2000, I drove out to South Dakota and back for a vaca-

tion. Once I reached the tourist spots like the Badlands,

Mt. Rushmore, and the Corn Palace, I found myself look-

ing at and wanting to buy some souvenirs. In the rare

times my family went on a vacation when I was growing

up, we usually purchased little trinkets or souvenirs to re-

member our trip. But this time, things were different. I

knew I would be moving a short time after I returned, and I

kept asking myself, “Do I want to pack and move this?”

Always, the answer was “No”; so I didn’t buy the items. If I

didn't want to pack and move it, I obviously didn’t treasure

it.

What I treasured about that trip

was visiting friends and exploring

(and taking pictures of) God’s cre-

ation—and even more than that,

being with my Creator in the midst

of his Creation. On that trip I

learned a valuable lesson about

true treasure; it’s not about what I

can store up in this world—if for

no other reason, I can’t pack it up

and take it with me when I die.

The “things” in this world that we

think are treasure won’t last, but

the love we invest in relation-

ships, especially in knowing and

sharing the love of Christ, that is

the only thing that will truly last.

We are just coming off the busiest

shopping season of the year in

our nation—unless you are still

hitting those after-Christmas

sales! Stores and retailers pro-

mote and push their goods, trying

to convince us that we can’t sur-

vive without them. However, if we succumb to the pres-

sure, purchasing and storing up all sorts of “treasure,” we

find we need to clean it, store it, move it, etc. Not only that,

but we need to pay for it! And sometimes, we end up pay-

ing for it more than once because of interest we paid on

the debt.

It really is no wonder that Jesus spoke so much about

money, possessions, and treasure. Jesus knew how easily

those things can consume us, enslave us, and become

our gods.

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,

where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves

break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treas-

ures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy,

and where thieves do not break in and steal. For

where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

(Matthew 6:19-21, NIV)

When we try to store up too many treasures in this world,

we end up paying for it—literally and figuratively. We not

only find ourselves enslaved to debt, but we waste the

time and energy we should have spent on true treasure—

what will last for eternity. I invite you participate in our up-

coming study on Wednesdays,

“Managing Our Finances God’s

Way.” (See related article with de-

tails.) How does God want us to

use and invest the money and re-

sources He has given us? How can

we get out of the debt under which

we are buried? How can we learn

the joy of giving and helping oth-

ers—and investing in eternity?

As we enter into a new year, this is

a good time for us to reflect on

what we really treasure—and allow

that to shape our lives in the com-

ing year. Do you treasure time with

family and friends? Then be sure to

invest time with those you love

most. Do you treasure your church

family? Then be sure to invest your

time and efforts to build up and

strengthen the body of Christ. Do

you treasure your faith in and rela-

tionship with God through Jesus

Christ? Then be sure to invest time

growing in and strengthening your relationship with Christ.

Do you treasure the love, joy, peace, hope, and eternal

life Christ offers? Then be sure to share Christ with others

so they can know the same.

This year, maybe we should ask ourselves, “Can I move it

and take it with me (when I die)?” If not, then maybe it

isn’t true treasure.

“For where your treasure is,

there your heart will be also.”

(Matthew 6:21, NIV)

Picture with me, if you will, a painting. In the upper left

corner and the lower right corner of the canvas the artist

has painted a human heart inside a box. The rest of the

canvas is blank, a gulf of empty space stretching between

the two boxed hearts. The painting is titled “Relationship.”

Does that image pierce your heart like it has mine?!

Have we unknowingly related to people like that? Have

we closed away our hearts in subtle ways and let distance

grow between ourselves and others? Those are the ques-

tions I examined after seeing that painting.

I felt God summoning me to a journey of opening my

heart, of creating deeper intimacy in my relationships, to

Him and to others.

It’s a brand new year. This year, would you like to join

me and focus on the relationships in our lives? Let’s draw

closer to God and ask Him in our relationship with Him and

ask Him to help us see how we might dismantle “boxes” that

keep us from relating to others heart to heart.

“Lord God, paint fresh new brush strokes of love into my

life all through this new year.”

Well, the Holidays are behind us and a New Year is

in front of us. Happy 2015 Everyone!

I have some great news regarding our beloved Food

Pantry. Contributions over the holidays have been

fantastic! The generous hearts of many people have

helped to fill the shelves and fill the Christmas Bas-

kets that the Pantry provided this year. We were

able to send 160 + Christmas Baskets to families!

We are asking for toilet paper, shampoo and dish deter-

gent only this month. Please keep all those who give and

all those who receive in your prayers for the upcoming win-

ter.

Thank you for your generosity. We who are richly blessed

have reached out and blessed many others this past year.

The New Year creates a time of reflection and re-energizing. It allows us to reflect on the opportunities that came our way in 2014 and look forward to the new opportunities in 2015. Our world and our community have so many needs, and our mis-sion is to use “tried and true” methods, as well as, new ways to meet those needs!

Your faithful giving to Coins and Missions, giving your loose change, will allow us to continue to meet some of the new op-portunities coming our way. We ask you to please continue to pray for our mission programs and to become involved as you are led.

May we truly be re-energized to enter the world knowing that it is our mission field and we are the missionaries called to serve and love in God’s name!

Christ United Methodist Church has many musically talented people in its congrega-tion. I have been in the choir for 55 years, never as a soloist, and I have been im-pressed with the voices of choir members and many other good singers in the pews as well. Soon after Paul Lindsey became our pastor in 1959, the Choir was revital-ized and it has functioned actively ever since. After that Bea Orr (a music teacher and Becky Ety’s mother) was the Choir Director for 20 years. Following Bea, we have had a number of Choir Directors for the Tra-ditional Service: Barbara DeLong, Peggy Ochs, Dennis Avey, Chris Eddy, Kristy Schooler, Becky Ety, Tim Lawlis, and currently, Valerie Stone. Each of them provided ex-cellent leadership in their own way and led us through

songs for worship services and cantatas. It is hard to pick an era when the choir was the best. With so many musically talented individuals in the congregation, our choir should have many more regular members than it does at present. In today’s world there are many other things that steal our times from the rewarding experiences of singing for our own and others enjoy-

ment. I know there is not much “history” in this article but I’m trying to encourage more people to give some of their time to the choir. I’m appealing not only to you excellent singers we like to hear, but background people like I am. Worth Harman

Ever have a song that just hooks into your heart? This month, I've been listening a lot to the artist Jeremy Camp. His Christmas album entitled “Christmas: God With Us” is one of my new favorites. The song "God With Us" got more play time from me than any other song in December. I look forward to his new album “Reckless “ that is due out in February. It was when I learned more about this artist that I became intrigued.

From Jeremy's website https:/www.jeremycamp.com: About a year ago Jeremy felt God ask him, “Are you willing to sur-render everything?” For him, “everything” was music. Some-thing he has been quite successful at for the past decade, with 32 No. 1 radio hits, a Grammy nomination and five Dove Awards. Even with this success, Camp says God brought him to a place where he could, if the day ever came, surrender music. “Not that it wouldn’t be a challenge,” says Camp, “but I wouldn’t be devastated because this is not my life. Christ is my life.”

Wow! All of those awards? All of that success, and he is willing to give it up for God? Amazing! Camp sees the bigger picture: there is more to this life than the accolades of earth. Jeremy is storing up his treasures in heaven. “I've given up on making this life my home…I don't want my messy handprints all over this," says Camp.

It cannot be for Camp to place all of his trust in Christ after suffering such personal trage-dy. At age 23, he lost his first wife Melissa (age 21)to ovarian cancer just a few months after their wedding. In his book entitled I Still Believe: Discovering Hope and Healing in the Midst of Life’s Deepest Valleys, Jeremy dis-cusses how the loss of his wife impacted him, and also how his faith has grown and

impacted his music over the last ten years.

Some of my favorite worship and Christian rock tunes have either been penned by or recorded by Jeremy Camp, such as "Beautiful One," "Jesus Saves," "I Still Believe," "Walk By Faith" and so many more. I thank God for using this individual's struggles to bless so many others.

As we focus upon the word TREASURE for the month of January, I thank the Lord for the treasures of music, of favorite singers and songs, and of individuals who inspire me to draw closer to the throne of God.

LOUISE SMITH Good Timers In 2011 The Good Timers team was organized with a purpose of being a fundraising group to make money to reduce the mortgage principal. We cater meals from as few as a birthday party for 25 to wedding receptions for 278. Some groups return year after year and book the next year in advance. Other activities funnel their fund-raising efforts into our recordkeeping tally - the home-made noodle profit and the Joy Sunday School Class sells cookbooks, has euchre parties and coordinated the turkey supper for several years. In previous years we have had electronic recycling. There were 55 people who stepped up to assist with this ministry in 2014. These volunteers were only counted once even though some of them helped several times. In addition, we have pie bakers who provide homemade pies for some of the meals.

We catered 14 events in 2014 and served 2,076 meals with a profit of $13,901. The numbers for earlier years we have: 2013 year: 1,212 meals, profit of $8,765; 2012 year: 2,171 meals, profit of $12,286 2011 year: 1,083 meals, profit $11,670

These years add up to a total of $46,622 profit - 90% was applied to the mortgage principal and 10% to apportion-ments. As we begin the new year of 2015, the church calendar contains three euchre parties, noodle making in March and ten meals provided. We will be serving the Liberty Union Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet January 23, a brunch/shower February 7 and the Fairfield County Cattle-men's Banquet February 21. The Good Timers will also be providing meals for the PAUMCS (Professional Associa-tion of United Methodist Church Secretaries) which will be hosted by Darcy Soliday, our Administrative Assistant, here at Christ UMC on September 22, 2015. We will need help and homemade pies for the ban-quets. If you would like to have a good time and help with these events, please let one of us know and make plans to join us. We would love to have you!

A big thank you to all those who contributed to the “Caring Tree” again this year. Gifts were purchased and beautifully wrapped for 11 families. Some of the families had up to 4 children that were able to have a Very Merry Christmas thanks to your

generosity and love and caring for those who are in need. Again this year we had a 100% return on the tags and gifts. Liberty Union Schools hand out a form to families in need. These families then turn in the forms to the Baltimore Fire Depart-ment. The Fire Department contacts area churches to participate with the Caring Tree Program. Those recipient families are truly grateful for being able to have a Merry Christmas.

Thank you to Peggy Lawlis for her continued support in heading up this wonderful gift of love for others. As an angel with love to give, your light shines bright!
