Internship Site:Greenville Hospital System

The site of my internship was Greenville Memorial Hospital, which

is a part of the Greenville Hospital System. Within the hospital, Iworked with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at theFertility Center of the Carolinas. This internship involved researchand data collection in the field of reproductive endocrinology andinfertility.

Fertility Center of the Carolinas:My Preceptor and Focus Area

I had the privilege to work with Bruce A. Lessey, M.D.,Ph.D., who is a known expert in the area of endometrialimplantation.

Dr. Lessey has published over 100 research papers regardingendometriosis, implantation and receptivity, polycysticovarian syndrome, infertility, and more.

My internship focused on endometriosis and unexplainedversus explained infertility of patients with recurrentpregnancy loss.

Description of Internship

My internship focused on analyzing patient records forresearch. These analyses will be used for differentpublications on infertility. That being said, most of my timewas spent collecting and analyzing the data needed for thesepapers. In doing this, I used paper records, electronicrecords, and a database specific for reproductiveendocrinology and infertility. In addition to collecting data, Iupdated the reproductive endocrinology and infertility

database because a lot of information was not current. Toupdate this database, I used paper charts and electroniccharts via Net Access.

Description of Internship

In addition to working on my own regarding the research, Iwas able to work closely with Dr.Lesseys assistant, Angela.She is responsible for much of the lab-work behind theresearch. I gained experience observing or performing thefollowing:

Sectioning frozen endometrial tissue

Staining tissue

Performing a Western blot

Imminuohystochemical staining

Freezing tissue collected in the OR

My Internship Experience Overall

I have learned so much during my time spent with Dr.Lesseyand the other staff at the Fertility Center of the Carolinas.This internship gave me the opportunity to experience the

research process first hand and learn more about the field ofreproductive endocrinology and infertility. It has truly been aprivilege to work with Dr.Lessey, and hopefully I will bepublished as a contributor to several of his research studies.
