And More...As the weather warms up, flowers begin to bloom and people are playing outdoors a bit more, don’t forget to bring your camera as you may come across the perfect image for the city’s “In Focus” photography contest. The contest is meant to inspire civic pride, motivate amateur and professional shutterbugs alike and encourage those who live and work in New Hope to explore their city. Entries will be judged on subject matter, composition, clarity, lighting, depth of field, drama/artistry, degree of difficulty, technical excellence, and overall impact. Watch future city publications and the city website for dates and details.

Community GardenThe Hope Grows community garden took seed last spring at Emergency Foodshelf Network, located at 54th and Zealand avenues. Hope Grows is a vol-unteer-run group dedicated to growing food and community in New Hope. The garden has approximately 20 stalls available for rent for the season. The garden also has plots dedicated as communal spaces which will be nurtured by volunteers. Food raised at the communal garden space will be donated to the foodshelf. Volunteer-ing to tend the communal spaces will make a perfect community service project for youth groups, churches, organizations and businesses. For more information, call 763-531-5196.

Tobacco-Free ParksThe New Hope City Council passed a resolution in January to extend New Hope’s Tobacco Free Policy to include city parks.New Hope has had a policy in place since 1988 that prohibits the use of tobacco products in city buildings and vehicles. The revised policy expands the reach of the policy to prohibit to-bacco use in “parkland, park facilities, and open space.” Exceptions to the tobacco free policy include: the grounds of City Hall, the New Hope Ice Arena, and the New Hope Village Golf Course; Victory Park playfields; city-owned parking lots; as part of a recognized religious/cultural activity or ceremony; or for special events (e.g. Duk Duk Daze) as desig-nated by city staff. New Hope’s emphasis will be to gain voluntary compliance of the Tobacco Free Policy in city parks.

Civic Center Park Improvement ProjectPlanning is now in progress to re-place the playground equipment at Civic Center Park, located at 4401 Xylon Avenue. The current equipment was pur-chased in 1990 and repainted in 2004 so it is in need of a facelift. Staff plans to develop a play-ground that is a showcase for New Hope as one of our two “Community Parks”. The new equipment will have play areas for both younger and older children and include a handicap accessible surface beneath the play area. Look for construction to begin in mid August with a grand opening in late fall.

“Journey” by McKenzie Kohn was one of last year’s photo contest winners.
