New Yorkers send nearly 6 million tons of waste to landfill every year—but much of that isn’t garbage at all.

donateNYC is supporting the NYC Department of Sanitation’s zero waste goals by helping residents, businesses and nonprofits to give goods, find goods, and do good—while keeping useful products from going to waste.

By donating and reusing goods, New Yorkers can:

• Reduce waste;

• Conserve energy and resources;

• Save money; and

• Create jobs and social services for New Yorkers in need.

Online Directory + Mobile App

Locate places to donate or find gently used, second-hand, and vintage goods with donateNYC’s online Directory and mobile app.

With hundreds of locations across the five boroughs, residents can search by item, location, and pick-up capability.

Listings include:

• Thrift shops

• Vintage boutiques

• Antique dealers

• Consignment stores

• Shelters & soup kitchens

• Flea markets

• Used book & music stores

• Community resource centers

Online Exchange for Businesses + Nonprofits

The donateNYC Exchange helps connect businesses looking to reduce overhead with nonprofits in need of supplies. The Exchange helps donors cut carting costs and recipients secure free or lower-cost furniture, electronics, and much more.

Getting started is easy: Users post listings of items they want or goods they no longer need. Then, interested users can contact donors or recipients to arrange pick-up or delivery. donateNYC staff can also act as matchmakers, connecting donors to community programs and social service organizations that reuse or resell material to support New Yorkers in need.

donateNYC Partnership Program

The donateNYC Partnership is a network of nonprofits that accept and distribute second-hand and surplus goods. As part of DSNY’s zero-waste-to-landfills goal, this Partnership helps reduce the amount of valuable resources going to landfill by helping organizations build strategic partnerships and promoting the reuse and donation of goods.

Partner ImpactWith more than 40 participating organizations, donateNYC Partners keep more than 42,000 tons (85 million pounds) of materials from landfills annually, including 22,000 tons of food waste – and provide more than 1.4 million New Yorkers with health and social services.
