I’m delighted that Sotheby’sis involved in this fundraisingauction on behalf of theNEAC.

This is an organisation that Ihave admired and supportedfor 30 years, since I washead of the Modern British

Department at Christie’s in the 1980s.

Some of Britain’s finest 20th and 21st Centuryartists were and are active members of thisorganisation, and its comforting to know the NewEnglish is as strong and healthy as ever.

I’m sorry not to be conducting the auction myself,but in Harry Dalmeny, you have the best man forthe job. I hope the evening is a great success.

I would like to express my thanks to the members ofthe New English Art Club, to Henry Wyndham, LordDalmeny and their colleagues at Sotheby’s, and toLewis McNaught and his team at the Mall Galleriesfor their generous help and support.

Members of the New English Art Club have eachbeen asked to give a painting to be sold to supportthe New English Future Fund and have done so withimmediate enthusiasm and generosity.

In buying from this auction you will be enabling theNew English to continue to promote the best incontemporary figurative painting and drawing,through exhibiting our members’ work beyondLondon, making improvements to our website and theprogramme offered to our Friends, and to fund ourcharitable role through the New English School of

Drawing, offering classes free of charge to thoseunable to afford tuition costs.

Our recent drawing scholars, taught and mentored byour artists, and given the opportunity to draw and to learn, are beginning to make real headway as practisingfigurative painters. We have a vital role in teaching the next generation the importance of draughtsmanship,and we are pleased to be able to offer regular classesin the new Learning Centre at the Mall Galleries.

Works on offer include modestly priced prints, portraitcommissions and major works by some of our mostsought after painters.

The auction lots illustrated in the first section of thiscatalogue will be sold at the live event on the eveningof Thursday, 29th May 2014. Purchases made at thelive event may be removed at the end of the liveauction once payment has been made.

To bid for the silent auction lots in the second sectionof this catalogue, simply register at the desk and thenwrite your bid on the form that you will find alongsideeach item. Viewing and bidding opens at 10am onTuesday 27th May and continues until 12 noon onSaturday 31st May, after which time, the successfulbidders will be notified.

Lord Dalmeny joinedSotheby’s in 1991, initiallyworking in the Old Master,Furniture and Silverdepartments. In 1993 hejoined the House Salesdepartment, becoming aDirector in 1999. InFebruary 2003 Lord

Dalmeny was appointed Chairman of Sotheby’sOlympia and now, as an integral part of theChairman’s office at New Bond Street, he hasexecutive responsibility for Business Developmentand continues to lead the Country House andSingle-Owner Sales department.

Lord Dalmeny has organised many Single-Ownerand Country House sales, ranging from attic salesat Chevening, Stansted Park and Chatsworth to thesale at Ickworth and the disposal of The Collectionof the Earls of Warwick.

He is one of Sotheby’s Senior Auctioneers and wason the rostrum during both the record-breakingBenacre sale in 2000 and the successful sale ofChristian, Lady Hesketh’s Collection in March2007. His role includes client liaison, throughwhich he has developed close connections withmany of the leading buyers and dealers in thisdiverse field.

LOT 1Michael WhittleseaFish Amongst the LilliesOil, 7.5” x 9.5”Estimate £400 – £500

Intensely coloured and closelyobserved, Michael says of his work, “I still find painting a very difficultactivity. It’s unpredictable – at the start ofeach day I am not sure that anythinggood will result, and I have given up onachieving a style.” Despite this modestapproach, Michael’s career has seenhis work being selected for, andwinning, prizes in some of the UK’s mostprestigious art competitions, includingthe Sunday Times WatercolourExhibition, the Royal Academy SummerExhibition and others.

LOT 2Richard PikesleyWind and SunOil, 18” x 30” Estimate £2,500 – £3,000

A member of the New English since1974, and now its President, Richardlives on a farm close to the sea in WestDorset, and this landscape forms thebackbone of his painting. When luredaway, he does paint elsewhere,including France, Italy, India and, morerecently, the Hebrides, but he isincreasingly obsessive about light and landscapes closer to home. Richard now exhibits at the Russell Gallery and hiswork is represented in many collectionsin the UK and around the world.

LOT 4Peter Brown The Top of Broadway Market, Sun and RainOil, 12” x 23”Estimate £3,000 – £4,000

Pete ‘The Street’ Brown is animpressionist painter of street scenesand landscapes of cities such as hismuch loved hometown Bath. Wellknown for being out in all weathers andclimes, Pete has been spotted furtherafield recently, capturing the vibranttechnicoloured street life in variousIndian cities on trips with fellow NEACpainters, Ken Howard and PatrickCullen. Pete is represented exclusivelyby Messum’s and is a member of the RPand the ROI, as well as the NEAC.

LOT 3Jane CorsellisSunlight on FresiasOil, 11” x 12”Estimate £2,500 – £3,000

Jane’s subtly coloured evocativedepictions of her life and travels havebeen enjoyed by members of the NEACsince her election in 1976. Jane’s earlycareer was spent travelling the worldand capturing it on canvas. Althoughhome is now overlooking the Thames inLondon, she still makes frequent paintingtrips to France, Italy and Austria. Janeexhibits regularly with Messum’s, andher work is held in many private andcorporate collections internationally.

LOT 5Antony WilliamsA portrait drawing sittingEstimate £1,500 – £2,000

Art critic Martin Gayford writes of Antony’s work, “He makes the viewer intenselyaware of surface detail” The same intensity of observation is true of Antony’sdrawings. His portrait work is much in demand, painting HM The Queen andthe Foreign Secretary, the Rt Hon Margaret Beckett, amongst many others.Antony has won numerous prizes over the years for his luminous temperapainting, most recently, the Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize and the RP OndaatjePortraiture Prize.

LOT 6Mary JacksonAlstromerias Catching the LightOil, 20” x 12”Estimate £2,500 – £3,000

Mary’s career has encompassed painting, illustration, workwith the ENO and residencies with both Glyndebourne andGarsington Operas. Working away from the studio is anintegral part of Mary’s painting – ideas are explored in situand then taken back to the studio, where they aredeveloped into paintings. Her work has been exhibitedregularly at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, TheDiscerning Eye and other Mall Galleries exhibitions.

LOT 8Peter KuhfeldCa D’Oro, VeniceOil, 12” x 12”Estimate £1,000 – £1,400

Royal Academy Schools trained, and a long-time member of the NEAC, Peter’s vividdepictions of interiors, landscapes and portraits are held in many major private collectionsincluding those of the Queen and the Prince of Wales. Peter has travelled the world with thePrince of Wales on many of his overseas trips, and was chosen to depict Prince William’swedding in Westminster Abbey, sitting high up in the eves to capture the moment.

LOT 7Susan RyderGilt ChairsOil, 20” x 15”Estimate £2,000 – £2,500

“One of the country’s leading portrait painters, Sue has foundsolace by freeing herself from the tyranny of a central character.After a lifetime studying people, figures and faces, there is nowonder she enjoys the tranquillity of an unpopulated room.” So says Matthew Hall of Panter and Hall, commenting on Sue’srecent solo exhibition. A recent Vice President of the Royal Societyof Portrait Painters, Sue has painted the Queen as well as manyother illustrious public figures.

LOT 9Tom CoatesRiver Walk, Evening Light, TaviraOil, 24” x 36”Estimate £4,500 – £5,000

Trained at the Royal Academy Schools,Tom is highly regarded as a figurativepainter, capturing with great sensitivityin oil, watercolour and pastel, the nude,landscape and portrait. The influence oftraditional painters such as Greenhamand Sickert can clearly be seen in hisvision of the world. Tom is a pastPresident of both the New English ArtClub and the Royal Society of BritishArtists, and a member of the RoyalSociety of Painters in Watercolours.

LOT 10Louise BalaamHigh Summer, Clear LightOil, 16” x 16”Estimate £1,500 – £2,000

Louise’s work is inspired by anemotional response to the natural world,in particular to the quality of light, whichis a vital part of the mood of thepaintings. She draws in the landscapeand then paints intuitively in the studio,so that the work both has a sense ofplace, and yet can also evokememories and personal interpretations inthe viewer. Louise shows regularly atJohn Davies and CadoganContemporary.

LOT 12Salliann PutmanWhite on WhiteOil, 20” x 22”Estimate £1,800 -– £2,200

Salliann has exhibited regularly with theNew English Art Club, the RoyalSociety of British Artists, the RoyalAcademy Summer Exhibitions, and thePastel Society, amongst others. Althoughknown for her beautiful still-life painting,Salliann says that relationships are thekey to her work – colour, composition,touch, mark – never the subject matter,which is seen as a starting point for anexploration into colour and form. ‘Whiteon White’, the painting on sale in theauction exemplifies this approach.

LOT 11Anthony Green RAThe Path IIIOil, 36” x 48”Estimate £10,000

One of Britain’s best loved narrativeand figurative painters, AnthonyGreen’s exuberantly coloured,surprisingly shaped paintings capturescenes of Green’s domestic life andsurroundings. Anthony was elected asa member of the Royal Academy in1977 and is also a trustee of theRoyal Academy. Martin Gayforddescribed Anthony’s work as“Chaotic, epic and dotty” a few yearsback, but it is also a wonderfullytender, honest celebration of oneman’s well lived life and marriage.

LOT 14Ken Howard OBE RAThe Grand Canal, Mid-Morning LightOil, 12” x 24”Estimate £7,000

Ken Howard’s instantly recognisable,much loved painting style has beentreasured by many over his long andillustrious career. Ken is a past Presidentof the NEAC, a Royal Academiciansince 1982, becoming Professor ofPerspective in 2004. Ken’s work iseminently collectible and examples ofhis work are held in many prestigiouscollections including the London StockExchange, Lloyds of London, theImperial War Museum and the NationalArmy Museum.

LOT 13Ruth StageAerial View, PembrokeshireEgg tempera, 14” x 17”Estimate £1,000 – £1,500

Instantly recognisable both for hertreatment of subject matter and her eggtempera technique, Ruth works ongesso-primed boards, building up herpaintings through a process of thinlayers of pigment that are applied in amixture of transparent washes, withopaque areas of concise detail. Theabstract shapes in the relationshipsbetween foreground and backgroundare a characteristic aspect of her work.Royal Academy Schools trained, Ruthhas won many awards including the2013 Lynn Painter Stainers Prize.

The property offered in this sale will be sold by the New EnglishArt Club. Any questions in relation to the sale should be directed to the New English Art Club and not to Sotheby’s, which servesmerely as the auctioneer for the New English Art Club inconducting the sale, and participates on the following terms andconditions.

1. Neither Sotheby’s nor the New English Art Club assumes anyrisk, liability or responsibility for the authenticity of authorship ofany property identified with this catalogue.

2. Any property may be withdrawn by Sotheby’s or the NewEnglish Art Club at any time before the actual sale.

3. Unless otherwise announced by the auctioneer at the time ofsale, all bids are per lot as described in the catalogue.

4. Sotheby’s and the New English Art Club reserve the right to reject a bid from any bidder. The highest bid acknowledged by theauctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the event of a dispute between bidders, the auctioneer shall have sole and final discretion todetermine the successful bidder or to re-offer and resell the lot indispute. If the dispute arises after the sale, the sale records of theNew English Art Club shall be conclusive in all respects.

5. If the auctioneer determines that any opening bid is notcommensurate with the value of the property, he may reject thesame and withdraw the property from sale, and if, havingacknowledged the opening bid, he decides that any advancethereafter is insufficient, he may reject the advance.

Live Auction6. On the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, the highest bidder shallbe deemed to have purchased the offered lot subject to all theconditions set forth herein and thereupon a) assumes the risk andresponsibility thereof, b) will sign a confirmation of purchasethereof, and c) will pay the full purchase price. Absentee bids maybe made using the Absentee Bid Form on the NEAC websitewww.neac.co.uk

After payment, the purchaser will remove the property from the Mall Galleries. If the property is not so removed, it will be stored at theMall Galleries at the risk and expense of the purchaser. If theforegoing conditions are not complied with, the New English Art Club may either a) cancel the sale, retaining as liquidated damagesall payments made by the purchaser or b) resell the property on threedays’ notice to the purchaser either publicly or privately, and in such event, the purchaser shall be liable for payment of any shortfallbetween the original sales price and the price achieved uponresale, all other charges hereunder, and any incidental damages.

Silent Auction7. Property for sale in the Silent Auction may be bid for by logging a bid in person with the desk at the Mall Galleries between Tuesday 27th May and Saturday 31st May during gallery opening hours.Absentee bids may be made using the Absentee Bid Form on theNEAC website www.neac.co.uk. At midday on 31st May, the highest bidder shall be deemed to have purchased each offered lot.

8. Payments for purchases must be made in Sterling and can bemade by cash, cheque, credit or debit card.

9. In the case of commission bids or telephone bids, Sotheby’sand the New English Art Club are not responsible for errors oromissions resulting from mechanical difficulties or failure.

10. Neither shipping nor delivery costs are included in the price atwhich a lot is knocked down by the auctioneer to the buyer.

11. Lots purchased from the Live Auction may be removed by the purchaser from the Mall Galleries at the end of the event on Thursday29th April, subject to payment being completed and confirmed. Lots purchased from the Silent Auction may be paid for and removedbetween 1pm on and 4pm on Saturday 31st May or during thefollowing week from the FBA reception,17 Carlton House Terrace,London SW1Y 5BD during office opening hours, subject topayment being completed.
