Dear Friends,

Welcome to past attendees and those who are new to our event. The Dubuque Museum of Art Holiday Party and Art Auction is a wonderful way to start the holidays. The continued support of our members, contributors, and friends of the museum allows us to bring exhibitions such as God Bless America, the Grant Wood permanent collection, and David Plowden’s Iowa to Dubuque. Our group has grown, giving us the opportunity to host our event at the historic Masonic Temple. Thank you to the Masons for your hospitality. We greatly appreciate the artists and businesses that make the auction possible with their generous donations. We strive to make our auction more successful each year. Lastly, a special thank you to Steve’s Ace Home & Garden for the loan of the Holiday Decor. Celebrate!

Welcome to the 37th annual DMA Art Auction & Holiday Party! We are so pleased that you’ve chosen to attend this evening, and we hope you take advantage of the food, drink, friends and wonderful auction items. Tonight’s festivities are important for many reasons. First, for many of our patrons, this event has become the unofficial kickoff to the holiday season. Believe it or not, the holidays are right around the corner, and we’re pleased to start the season off with this terrific event. Don’t forget that any of our items in tonight’s silent or live auctions could make a perfect holiday gift for someone on your list!

Second, tonight is a chance for us to recognize and socialize with all of our friends and supporters. Look around the room as you read this. Everyone here is dedicated to making Dubuque a vibrant center for the arts, and the Dubuque Museum of Art is proud to be a partner in that effort. Thank you for joining forces with so many others to make the Museum a cornerstone of Dubuque’s cultural landscape.

Third, the event allows the Museum another opportunity to highlight the fantastic art and artists that fill our community. Over 25 artists have contributed to this evening’s auction, and their amazing talents and generous donations are THE reason that this event has become so successful and popular. We couldn’t be more proud to bring their hard work and creative spirit to an ever-growing and appreciative audience.

Finally, this event is our major fundraiser for the year. The money raised here this evening will help sustain our world class exhibitions, programs, classes and collections for an entire year. Your generous support this evening (and throughout the year) allows us the opportunity to bring the highest quality cultural experiences to our community.

I would be remiss if I didn’t recognize all of the time, talent, and treasure that goes in to making tonight a success. Our key sponsors, Ruhl & Ruhl Realtors and Dubuque Bank & Trust are generous and terrific partners, and we sincerely thank them for their support. I also would like to thank the many donors, artists and businesses that have contributed to tonight’s auction. Lastly, I’d like to recognize the hard work and dedication of our Board of Trustees, our many volunteers, our outstanding staff and especially the hard work of our Auction and Raffle Committees. Your generous participation, support, and input are truly helping to make Dubuque an even more exceptional community to live in and to visit.

With thanks and best holiday wishes,

Mark WahlertDirector

Joey WallisSumac and the Snowflake2006Gicleé photographic print20x28

I photographed this split second moment on the morning of Oct 12, 2006 at Mines of Spain. An early snow had me out looking for the perfect winter/autumn juxtaposition. The white sugar dusting of snow was just magical amongst the colors of autumn and I was bouncing from one photo to another. Then something caught the corner of my eye, a Fernlike Stellar Dendrite snowflake had just landed on a sumac beside me, completely different from the sugar snow that was falling. I had only a few seconds to focus and snap one frame before a gust of wind lifted it away. It was pure relief and joy to look into the camera’s LCD screen and see the image was there! The best powder snow, where you sink to your knees while skiing, is made of stellar dendrites.

Patron’s PotOur face jug, with a face only a mother could love, was introduced many years ago by friends of the museum as a fund-raiser for the auction. Here’s your chance to host this much-beloved tradition. The winning bidder gets to keep the pot for one year. It must then be returned for inclusion in next year’s auction. Special note: funds raised from the Patron’s Pot go directly to support the Museum’s educational classes and programs.

Aaron ButcherUntitled2011Mixed30x15

Combining both abstract and literal imagery inspires my drawings. My work is a response to spontaneous mark making, the search for and creation of sketched images. The result is funny, unique, and sometimes weird characters that invite the viewer to respond with their own stories.
