The most fundamental skill in soccer is individual mastery of the ball and the creativity that comes with it. This should be a priority in training and games, especially in the early years. As this skill is mastered, the rest of the game becomes easier.Practices should be built around facilitating the development of the skills necessary to move and control the ball well. As these individual skills and the creativity to make them come alive in the game are developed to a level of competence, the finer points, first of passing skill and later of team organization can be taught.

Player Development Guide - U.S. Soccer

DELIVERY BREAKDOWNEach move must be broken down when being delivered. This process will not only help players master the skill quicker but challenges each player at their own pace. Each move goes through a 3 stage process – Preparation, Action, Recovery. Each move should also go through a 3 speed process – Static, Moving, At Pace. Players should be allowed to progress to the next speed in their own time, with guidance from the coach.

PreparationThe selection of moveThe approach to the ballThe position of the body

ActionThe moment of deceptionThe footwork The change of body weight

RecoveryThe adjustment of feetThe reposition of body weightThe change of speed/direction from the opponent
