A China-based commercial property group, the Wanda Group has announced plans for an 89-story tower to rise at Lower North Field Blvd. To be located along the Chicago River, it will be constructed between the soon-to-be-built GEMS-2 building and the Regatta (425 E. Wacker Dr.). The new building, at 375 E. Wacker Dr., will bridge Lower North Field Blvd.

Like the Aqua building (225 N. Columbus Dr.), The Wanda Group tower will be a hotel and condo combination. Completion is planned for 2018.

With the GEMS-II and Wanda sites accounted for, 7 sites remain in the New Eastside for development.

DOORMAN OF THE MONTHMaggie Daley Park UpdateBy – Bob O’Neill | President, Grant Park Conservancy

Randolph Elevator / Garage Shortcut to Monroe Now Open By – North Harbor Tower management

Here is the latest and greatest on Maggie Daley Park. A little over ten percent of the trees are in. We are targeting a November soft opening, but the official opening will be early June 2015. There will still be some plantings that will be installed in spring 2015.

Work is still being done around the ice ribbon and much progress is being made with the placement of the stone sub-base and the insulation and reinforcement bar being installed. The area is also being prepared for plumbing installation.

Geo-foam work is mainly south to focus on the areas at the children’s play garden. The play ship and harbor play structures and the nest swings are installed on the site. Soil fill is still being put down in many areas and topsoil is now going in where there is tree planting. Cast-in-place concrete work forming the

staircases and walkways also continues at a rapid pace. For further questions concerning Maggie Daley Park, Contact Bob on (312) 927-6795, email [email protected], or visit www.grantparkconservancy.com.

To get across Maggie Daley Park to the remainder of Grant Park, a good alternative route is to take the elevator on Upper E. Randolph (across from 360 E. Randolph St.) to the LOWER level of the garage. Then walk 900 feet south through the newly renovated garage all the way to the stairway up to Monroe and Lake Shore Drive. Even after Maggie Daley Park is opened, this would be a good route, especially during inclement weather.

The garage is well lighted, clean and an emergency phone is available about every 60 feet to the garage patrol team. The garage is well used during the work week, and during the summer when the Monroe Harbor boaters use it more often. You can even walk southwest through the garage entry under Middle Columbus St. and up the elevator in Millennium Park (across from the Art Institute).

the park is planned for November 2014. (maggiedaleyparkconstruction.org)

What do you like best about your job?I love the opportunity to change someone’s day by making them smile. A morning greeting can make all the difference. I also love to meet new people. Describe yourself in three words:Funny, friendly, humble. What techniques do you use to help you remember names and faces? I am fortunate to have a gift with names. If I am told a name once, I can remember it weeks later. What changes have you noticed in the area since you have been here?A change in the crowd - there are many more kids now and a much younger crowd. There are more trees and more color in the park as it’s grown. What is your top tip for the city?I’ve always wanted to go to the Skydeck in the Willis Tower, but I’m afraid of heights. I would love to take that challenge someday. What is the nicest thing a resident has said to you or done for you? After I helped one resident out of a cab, she gave me an envelope “to open at home”. When I opened it, out of the card fell $600 cash! That was an amazing gift. Too much, but really appreciated.

When should I call 311 vs. 911?Calling 311 allows you easy access to non-emergency police services, from filing police reports to talking to police personnel in your district. You should call 311 if the incident that you are reporting has occurred and the offender is gone from the scene. You should call 911 if the incident you are reporting is in progress and the presence of a police officer is necessary to help resolve the matter (e.g., burglary, incident involving injuries, quieting loud neighbors, etc.). – Source: www.cityofchicago.org

Beat meeting summary - August 14, 2014-Elaine Hyde | Editor

CAPS(Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy) 1st District, Sector 10, Chicago Police beats 0111, 0112, 0113, 0114.

Community members raised concerns regarding noise ordinance violations from events at The Park Grill restaurant and from bucket drummers who busk on street corners. Other items raised were panhandling near Macy’s on State Street and pedestrian safety while

crossing at the intersection of S. Water Street. and N. Columbus Drive. CAPS police provided community members with citizen copy of all crimes and arrests on the beats for the previous two months. Theft was the most common crime in the beat, however police advised community members that the vast majority of these are retail theft or theft that occur during festivals in Grant Park such as Lollapolooza.

The next beat meeting is September 11, 2014 at 400 E. Randolph St.

To ensure that New Eastside stays as safe and as crime-free as possible, here are some safety tips and advice that the New Eastside Community collected from our CAPS District 1 police:

Personal Safety Tips – adapted from neighborhood fliers, provided courtesy of CAPS District 1 police

ON THE STREET: Be alert and look around.Carry your purse in a manner that makes it hard to get – across your chest or under your arm where more than a simple grab is needed to snatch it. Men should carry their wallets in their inside coats or side pants pocket; never in the back pocket where it is easy to grab. When possible, walk, ride or jog with a partner. At night, use well-lit and populated streets and, if you can, vary the route you take each day or night. Avoid wearing headphones or talking on your cell phone. In particular, do not carry cell phones or other electronic

equipment in sight when walking or on public transportation.

ON PUBLIC TRANSIT: Be prepared.Have the exact fare or your Ventra card out before you leave home so that there is no need to open a purse or a wallet. When getting on and off the bus or train, try to choose a stop that is busy and has the best lighting possible.

When waiting for a train, stay close to other people in the most well-lit area of the station. When on the train or bus, sit near the driver or operator. When possible, sit on the aisle seat where you will have more mobility should trouble occur.

IN YOUR CAR: Secure your ride.Lock your doors and be sure to store your purse, wallet or other valuables

beneath your seat, not on the seat next to you where they are easy and inviting targets for theft. Park in a well-lit area and always lock your car. If you notice that street lights are out, call 311 to make sure this “condition for crime” is remedied.

Finally, wherever you are:Remember – A crime-free city requires that everyone report suspicious activity by calling 911 and report conditions that make crime possible by calling 311. Find more information on www.cityofchicago.org.

Neighborhood Watch – A safe New Eastside is everybody’s business.

(1) Intersection of Upper N. Columbus Dr. and South Water St.There are 24 different ways traffic can traverse this intersection in front of Aqua at 225 N. Columbus Drive. There are no traffic lights at this junction. Try to make eye contact with drivers before crossing or wait until the intersection is mostly clear.

(2) Intersection of Sub Lower Wacker Dr. and N. Field Blvd. The entrance to the Chicago Auto Pound, Lakeshore East Park, and South River Walk are located here. Moving vans and construction vehicles often use this intersection. The intersection is poorly lit, and has unclear crossing marks and traffic signage.

(3) Lower E. Randolph St.Pedestrians use lower Randolph as a connection to the Millennium Station during inclement weather. It is no longer the hang-out for the homeless that it used to be, however, it is not well-lit and rarely do street sweepers (and sidewalk sweepers) attempt to clean these lower-level roadways bordering the New Eastside area.

(4) Intersection of Michigan Ave. & Randolph St.One of the busiest intersections in Chicago is flush with tourists and hurried office workers. Turning vehicles should expect pedestrians who are unfamiliar with the intersection to enter it when the left turn signal is displayed and the vehicles have the right-of-way.

(5) River Walk, Lakefront Trail and the surrounding public parks At night, these areas can be isolated. The Lakeshore East Park and other public parks and walkways are open 6AM - 11PM. General safety guidelines should be followed, such as walking in groups, or using paths that are more populated and have better lighting.

(6) New Eastside PedwayThis is a mostly safe and well-lit route. It is safest to use the Pedway during peak hours or walk with a partner or friend if you need to use it at night. (Insert pedway hours). New Eastside Pedway Aqua access route hours are Mon – Fri 6:30AM – 9PM, Saturday 6:30AM – 6PM, Sunday closed.

(7) Lakefront Trail The shared bicycle and pedestrian path often gets crowded and there are sections that are under construction related to the Navy Pier flyover (a safer pedestrian and bike path).

Tip: Stay all the way on the right of the path when walking or running and look over your shoulder frequently to avoid being surprised by a cyclist who may be trying to pass.

(8) Middle Columbus Dr.Middle Columbus pedestrian walk does not connect south to Adams Street. Access Middle Columbus Bridge by using elevators in one of the Columbus Drive towers to get to bridge level or use the stairs at the River Walk.

I will be the first to admit that I’m more than a little obsessive about my sleep. Clearly, living in high-rise buildings you are subject

to noise from neighbors, it comes with the territory. For the most part, people are sensible and turn off their music at a reasonable time, and building management will give a gentle warning if necessary.

But what happens when noise is external to your building and therefore out of your control? In the summer, there is often a lot of early morning and evening noise due to events in the surrounding parks. The noise dies down in fall, but noisy neighbors can be a problem all year round and there are still a few big events like the Chicago Marathon coming up.

Our ward (Ward 42) is interesting because so many events that are income-generating for our city are held within it. Jurisdiction is also shared with the Chicago Park District (CPD), which is not part of the City Council. So some

events are organized through the CPD and others through the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. Our Alderman, Brendan Reilly, has input to all of these events. Any issues or complaints about events, road closures, disturbances, liquor licenses or other areas where the neighborhood might be adversely affected, can be reported to the Alderman, who in turn works with these groups to deal with any issues going forward.

For events, such as races (e.g., the Chicago Spring Half Marathon or the Chicago Triathlon), which take place throughout the spring and summer, official permits are granted by the city allowing them to start early and play music for the runners. The evening events, such as Lollapalooza, Grant Park Music Festival and Taste of Chicago, must conform to the standards and music must be shut off by 10pm. No special permits exist allowing late-night noise.

So what does this mean for New Eastside? After discussion with many residents, the worst noise offenders were listed as the early morning races and the annual summer parties that some buildings hold in the evenings. Early morning races are generally granted permits, but no permit exists for private parties outdoors with amplified sound.

A useful example of this is at the restaurant III Forks. This restaurant has an outdoor patio liquor license, which allows it to serve alcohol in the open air on its private property (subject to normal liquor laws). However, the

restaurant MUST close by midnight and it is not allowed to play live or amplified music at any time.

The Lancaster’s summer party is a good example of a noise nuisance. This party

is cited as an ongoing noise nuisance by residents, and the Alderman’s office has been made aware of this issue every year. This year, the party was held on August 2nd, and loud music could be heard by residents of neighboring buildings until midnight. However, the Alderman’s office does not have jurisdiction over this or any other violations of these rules, and they state that incidents like these should be immediately reported to the police by calling 911.

As residents of one of the most vibrant downtown areas, we get the benefit of easy access to a lot of events, which is wonderful. Of course, the flip side to that is that we also have to put up with noise and disruption. However, the City of Chicago has put some very stringent rules in place, and as long as everyone abides by these, then we will continue to have a wonderful community and quality of life here in the New Eastside.

Alderman Brendan Reilly’s office can be contacted at 312-642-4242.

Chicago noise ordinance: what are the rules and regulations?

Chicago has adopted a very stringent noise ordinance (11-4-2800), which can be read in full on their website at www.cityofchicago.org

In Summary:

• No person on the public way can use a device that makes noise at a level louder than average conversational level to a distance of 100 feet.

• No person on any private open space can make any amplified sound at a level louder than average conversational level to a distance of 100 feet between the hours of 10:00pm and 8:00am.

• Parades, athletic events, public assemblies and outdoor special events are excluded from this as long as they have a permit and comply with said permit.

• None of the above apply to devices used by emergency services.

The Great Chicago Fire Festival, an inaugural pyrotechnic event, will light up the Chicago River between State Street and Columbus Avenue, Saturday, October 4 at 8PM.

Celebrating Chicago’s grit, greatness and renewal following the fire of 1871, the spectacle was originally planned as part of Chicago’s bid for the 2016 summer Olympics. Tens of thousands of people are expected on the banks of the Chicago River to witness the festival.

During the show, enormous lanterns will be lowered from

the Columbus Drive and State Street bridges while dozens of kayaks, carrying lanterns of their own, will float in formation along the river. The festival’s path will be emblazoned by three moored floating fire sculptures that look like pre-1871 Chicago house-like

structures. Their flaming exteriors will burn away to reveal a symbolic interior core that rises out of the flames like the city’s rise and rebirth after the historic 1871 fire.

Fire dancers on the riverbank, a 19th century industrial styled ‘steampunk’ boat, and the Chicago Children’s

Choir will join the celebration that ends with a fireworks

display.

The recent business boom in the Village Market has not shaken the local pizza joint that has called New Eastside home since the 1950s. Seven Bar and Restaurant, on the seventh floor of the 400 E. Randolph condo building, has been owned by Mohammed Rafiq for the past 12 years.

Rafiq has changed the whole menu and added items over the years to suit customer interest, such as taco dinners and quesadillas, but the pizza is still as popular as ever. “Most people rave about our pizza because it is unique; it is not a regular thin slice and has a bit more to it,” says Rafiq. “It’s cut in squares and has a very crisp bottom. We can deliver to New Eastside within 10 minutes from it leaving the oven.”

A karaoke stage and disco ball add to the fun, casual atmosphere of this restaurant where neighbors can easily congregate and have a good

time without breaking the bank. There’s even a modern-day jukebox wired to the Internet that you can operate for 50 cents. Customers from outside the building must register at the front desk.

Rafiq previously ran a large grocery store in the basement of 400 E. Randolph, which he

closed in 2010, one year before Mariano’s opened, in order to focus on the restaurant. “There are very few restaurants downtown that cater to that neighborhood feel,” says Rafiq, who has watched the New Eastside evolve over the

20 years he has lived in the area. “When we moved in there were no restaurants around… it was isolated and felt as though we were the selected or chosen people living in this part of the neighborhood, but now we have a lot of good neighbors, a lot of young people and families, and now it feels like a community.”

Training locations and some other helpful hints.

SWIMTrain for open-water swimming at Chicago’s Ohio Street Beach (located less than one mile from the New Eastside area). The Chicago Park District monitors the area and publishes water temperatures daily. There is a quarter-mile buoy and a half- mile buoy, perfect for sprint, Olympic and full ironman distance training. With a water depth of less than five feet deep, even novice open-water swimmers can practice there. Bring your own lock for lockers at the beach entrance. During cold weather, the indoor lap pool at the new Lakeshore Sport & Fitness center at 211 N. Stetson Avenue is a good option.

CYCLEA full loop on the Lakefront Trail is 38 miles. Cyclists can travel farther south to Wolf Lake, near the border of Illinois and Indiana, or choose to ride farther north to the north shore suburbs. Given the lack of hills in Chicago, many cyclists drive to Barrington Hills, Illinois. You’ll see cycling clubs that meet at the parking lot of Barrington High School and ride a six-mile loop that is undulating with some challenging climb portions. During the colder months, head to triathlon-training facilities that offer an indoor computrainer.

RUNThe Lakefront Trail is the most convenient option for runners. Organized runs with a variety of different pace groups are arranged by the running organization CARA (Chicago Area

Runners Association). If building speed into your training program is your focus, you can join runners at the 400-meter track located near Chicago Avenue and Lake Shore Drive. Finally, those who are training for trail runs and ultra-marathons will find that Waterfall Glen in Dupage County, is a great option to get in both trail and hill workouts with its 9.5-mile trail loop.

Don’t forget about nutrition and recoveryFueling before, during and after your training will be essential to having a great workout and an even better race day. In terms of recovery, Edge Athlete

Lounge, located at 1747 N. Elston Avenue is Chicago’s first athlete-recovery lounge where recovery technology, such as recovery pumps, water therapy, electro stim, laser therapy and active release therapy, enables you to recover faster.

How can I get started?I would highly recommend finding a training group. There are several to choose from: Infinity Effect, Well Fit, Chicago Endurance Sports, and numerous others. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at [email protected]

Being properly insured is beneficial for pragmatic reasons and for financial reasons. Simple everyday activities can pose a number of risks that go largely unnoticed. Northwest Insurance Brokers has teamed up with New Eastside community to provide a no cost Insurance Review to help ensure you or your business is adequately and properly covered in case a claim does arise.

Something as obvious as salting outside your storefront helps mitigate claims. Or if you own a business where heavy items are being lifted, enumerating proper steps for lifting items will help to prevent losses from occurring in the first place.

Maybe your biggest risk exposures are your automobile or home. Are your liability limits sufficient to protect you in the event of a large loss? Maybe you rent an apartment and forgo a renter’s policy, what if a water leak occurs, would you want to pay for the costs out of pocket?

In any case, insurance is only helpful to the extent that you are adequately covered given your respective needs and exposures. Are your insurance policies in line with your needs? An Insurance Review will determine all of these questions and expose gaps in coverage that could lead to a devastating loss. A Review can also help to prevent claims from ever occurring by helping to identify risks that may be overlooked.

Managing Everyday RiskWhat are your biggest risk exposures and how can they be mitigated? By David Jenk, Attorney at Law | Executive Director, Northwest Insurance Brokers
