December 2016 Dear IRMSA members After a year that must represent one with the most significant developments that kept organisations and risk professionals on their toes across all fronts, in recent times, both locally and internationally, there is very little for me to say than to wish you a restful period over the holiday season. Very important for me, is to thank all the staff of IRMSA, who have tirelessly worked with enthusiasm and unfaltering passion to deliver both strategically and operationally, under the capable leadership of Gillian le Cordeur. Thank you too, to the IRMSA Executive Committee who give freely of themselves to work as a unified body of people, and as you steer your respective portfolios with members of the subcommittees of the main Exco – it has been a great year! A big thank you to our many volunteers who willingly raise their hands to contribute to a wide range of projects and initiatives. To our members who have participated in the many events, What a year this has been! I cannot actually believe that this year is coming to an end and we are all gearing up for the holidays. 2016's focus has been on the 'Future Fit Risk Manager'. • December 2016

    Dear IRMSA members

After a year that must represent one with the most significant

developments that kept organisations and risk professionals on

their toes across all fronts, in recent times, both locally and

internationally, there is very little for me to say than to wish you

a restful period over the holiday season.

Very important for me, is to thank all the staff of IRMSA, who

have tirelessly worked with enthusiasm and unfaltering passion

to deliver both strategically and operationally, under the

capable leadership of Gillian le Cordeur. Thank you too, to the

IRMSA Executive Committee who give freely of themselves to

work as a unified body of people, and as you steer your

respective portfolios with members of the subcommittees of the

main Exco – it has been a great year!

A big thank you to our many volunteers who willingly raise their

hands to contribute to a wide range of projects and initiatives.

To our members who have participated in the many events,

What a year this has been! I cannot actually believe that this

year is coming to an end and we are all gearing up for the

    holidays.

2016's focus has been on the 'Future Fit Risk Manager'.

Everything we as an Institute did this year had the theme of the

future risk manager and what it is that organisations and

industry need in order to flourish or survive in this very

demanding business landscape that is continuously changing

    and challenging.

This year we had a record number of events and training

sessions with a record number of attendees. The IRMSA team

was kept so busy, without pausing for a moment. This urgency

to provide the various sessions was in direct response to the

demands of our very enthusiastic members who constantly want

to learn, network and up skill, and of course because their

organisations and boards are becoming more demanding of

  • including training and board exams etc., that the IRMSA

calendar offered in 2016, I do hope that you found these of

value. To those of you who have commenced your studies

through BankSeta I wish you well and look forward to feedback

    re course content etc.

Our roles as risk managers remain essential and the demands

on us grow exponentially as we ensure that we deliver on our

risk management mandates in the organisations we are

employed by. I remain absolutely convinced that we are

involved with one of the most exciting and challenging

professions available to earn a living. It is so relevant and so full

of opportunity to keep us engaged, contributing and of value to

    organisation stakeholders.

Over the holiday period I urge you to look back over your year…

smile at those components of your job that you feel were

delivered well and reflect on those aspects you are going to

focus on a little more in 2017. There is much to be proud of and

so much to look forward to.

Until we meet up again in 2017… go well and go safely. Wishes

to each of you for rest and relaxation and an opportunity for

quality time with those most important to you.

2016 was not only a year of rapid change and excitingnew discoveries but also one of surprises, often leastexpected. Locally the Fees Must Fall campaign and localgovernment elections and internationally BREXIT and theUSA elections gave risk mangers everywhere much tocontemplate.

All these challenges and the continuous evolution of riskserved IRMSA well. Click to read more…

them as risk management becomes even more valued. The

conversations that we have had all year have been about the

future fit risk manager and have shown us that communication,

continued learning, benchmarking and clever reporting are vital

skills that all risk professionals need to ensure that they acquire

and continue to be proficient in. We see more and more how

risk practitioners are leading risk management within their

    organisations.

Other challenges focussed on this year was the relationship of

risk and opportunity, highlighted in King 4, and of course

innovation and the risk of not keeping up or being ahead of the

game. The good news is that IRMSA will continue to support

members with these challenges, amongst other interventions in

2017. We realise how important it is to keep opportunities and

innovation on our radars but the question we need to answer

now is 'how?'  so we will be working with members next year

to explore these and other areas and come up with some fresh

guidelines that will assist us all on this new path that we find

    ourselves on.

Two major highlights of my year were most definitely being

privileged to attend the IFRIMA meetings, on behalf of IRMSA,

in San Diego in April and most recently in Hong Kong during

November, accompanied by our President, Sheralee Morland. At

the same time, I was able to attend the RIMS Conference and

then the PARIMA Conference. IRMSA is actively working with

the various international risk management bodies to share best

practice and exploring ways of aligning and endorsing our

certification programmes. The IRMSA board exams and

qualifications have been highly regarded and will place our

South African Risk Managers who are following the IRMSA

professionalisation path in a very good position, not only in

    South Africa but globally too.

  • December often provides an opportunity to pause andreflect on the year that is rapidly passing. For my family itwas filled with many heart wrenching moments, whichunfortunately were echoed by external national and globalshocks and events. It was also however filled withmoments of milestones, joys and the wonder at the abilityof people’s inner strength and resilience. Click to readmore…

As usual 2016 started with a lot of enthusiasm. Thanks toa highly motivated team that is ever ready to serve themembers. One of my highlights for this year was the transformationat the Institute, especially at EXCO level with 50% womenrepresentatives. This shows progressive change inrecognising the demographics of the country. Moreover, tosee more people willing to donate their time in order tomake a contribution to the Institute. Click to read more…

The professionalisation of risk management is no longerjust a dream but a reality. 2016 has seen 72 candidateswrite the Certified Risk Management Practitioner (CRMPrac) Board Exam 1 with a total of 16 qualifyingsuccessfully in the June 2016 exam. The November 2016results will be released in February 2017. Candidates arecompleting their work experience Logbooks in order tomeet the requirements to be awarded the designation.Click to read more…

    IRMSA is fortunate to

    have a wealth of

    dedicated members who

    serve on committees and

    working groups. We get

    to see first hand why

    South Africa is most

    certainly a leader in risk

    management. We are

    grateful to our

    volunteers and sponsor

companies who really keep the momentum going and the

energy high. IRMSA is most definitely a professional body that

can say that everything that is accomplished is 'for the

    members, by the members'.

Looking forward to 2017, we are excited about what lies ahead.

Our Risk Managers have a big year ahead and will continue to

lead into the future. We wish all of our members a very

peaceful festive season and holiday. We hope that you will find

some time to rest and get ready for 2017 as next year is going

to be a very active year for all members with so much to look
