Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dearly Beloved,

In the first reading Isaiah is running for his life after killing all the priests of Baal. He is fleeing from Jezebel’s venge-ance. She has sworn to kill him because of what he has done .Rather than quake in fear over what has happened at the hands of God, her pride causes her to go after Isaiah.

Isaiah is tired of running and prays that God will let him die. But God has other plans for his prophet. He sends an an-gel to minister to him, to feed him and to arrange for his protection. Isaiah is to go to Mt. Horeb, also known as Mt. Sinai, where he will meet God just as Moses did. Our lesson here is quite simple. If we continue on our journey to seek God, we will certainly come to meet Him and He will take care of us to make that possible – even if we have to put up with a great deal of struggle beforehands. It is then we will find our completion.

Ephesians, the second reading, tells us how we are to act while on this journey. If we listen carefully it is not hard to imagine what a wonderful world this would be if everyone behaved this way. The command to build one another up by being supportive and non-judgmental, when implemented, has many examples of wonderful consequences. Perhaps the most notable in our own day would be those of the different 12 step programs that began with Alcoholics Anony-mous. These programs epitomize the Christian way of life, one of mutual love and respect and a willingness to help each other succeed. Even if people stumble in these programs like Isaiah did when he begged for death, the members know that all they have to do is turn it over to God to receive the nourishment they need to encounter God by being there for one another.

To understand the Gospel we need to know the audience to whom it was addressed. And we need to know something of the audience in the story. Written a half-century or so after the Resurrection, the number of Jewish believers had become large enough to pose a nuisance to the larger Jewish community, especially its leaders, who considered Jesus little more than a troublemaker and his followers heretics. These authorities were beginning to expel the Jesus believ-ing Jews putting them in dire peril. Jews were the only subjects of the Roman Empire not required to worship the em-peror as divine. Of course, the Christians could never agree to such a sacrilege so they risked imprisonment and death at the hands of the Roman authorities.

John writes to these people to encourage them to hold fast to their belief in Christ. The price they may have to pay for their steadfastness is quite worth the reward of salvation that awaits them. John is speaking to people of Faith and the words he puts in Jesus’ mouth are directed to believing Jews, not to the audience that the story has Jesus addressing.

The audience in the story is a pathetic lot. They simply do not understand what is happening. Even the disciples do not know what Jesus really means because they have not yet experienced the coming of the Spirit, the gift of Faith. They do not have the advantage of faith that we do in this church today. The pathetic response of the Jewish audience is un-derstandable when we realize that God had not called them to belief as he has us. Therefore, we should not judge them too harshly. At the same time, having received the great gift of faith, it behooves us to embrace as much as we can the message of Ephesians when it comes to dealing with one another.

We are the fortunate ones. We have the history of our faith and the sacraments to help us along the journey. This is the food God gives us in addition to His Son in the Eucharist. This is why we should display a joyful attitude of gratitude for whatever comes our way because we have been given so much in our faith. Let us always remember what scripture tells us: “Eye has not seen ear heard, nor has it dawned on man what God has prepared for those who love him.” God bless.

Dcn. Brian

JESUS HIMSELF COMES TO US IN THE POOR

Jesus declares in today’s Gospel ,’”I am the living bread that came down from heaven.” When we receive Jesus, he sends us forth to live our lives in his Spirit – the Spirit of Love as true life for the world. God promises to give us strength for our journeys – both now and our ultimate journey to heaven. Jesus makes this clear when he speaks about the last judg-ment. People will ask, “Lord when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?” And Jesus will answer: “In so far as you did this to one of the least…of mine, you did it to me.” (Matthew 25:37, 40) This is our great challenge and consolation. Jesus comes to us in the poor, the sick, the dying, the prisoners, the lonely, the grieving, the disabled, and the rejected. There we meet him, and there the door to God’s house is opened for us. Whom do you know whom is ‘poor in spirit’- whom you can reach out to this week in the Spirit of Je-sus – the Spirit of Love? Ask the Holy Spirit to put a per-son(s) name on your heart. Seek them out. Imagine if ALL of us did this. What a ‘multiplication’ from our indi-vidual willingness to let God use us! Social Justice Committee
