Ribbon Cutting Ceremonies

The City of Palm Desert welcomes Lieutenant Anthony Baur as its new Assistant Police Chief. A 26-year veteran of law enforcement, Lieutenant Baur serves as the community’s primary point of contact for all police services. A Palm Desert resident who has lived in the Coachella Valley for 44-years, Lieutenant Baur knows the community well. His family includes three children. “I enjoy working with the com-munity and feel very strongly about maintaining the quality of life that people enjoy here in Palm Desert,” Baur said. He advises residents and visitors who observe unlawful activity to call 911. For issues that do not pose an immediate threat to public safety or property, Baur suggests calling the Police Department’s non-emergency number at 760/836-3215. Community members will have an opportunity to meet and speak with Lieutenant Baur at Coffee with a Cop from 10am a.m. to noon on Wednesday, August 10, at the Starbucks lo-cated at Gerald Ford Drive and Technology Way. The event offers residents and local business owners a chance to ask questions, voice concerns, and get to know Baur and other local police officers. For more information, please call 760/836-1697.

In the past, when we spoke of 'going to work', we were referring to a brick & mortar location. How-ever, technology and demographic changes (Gen Y and Z) have introduced significant changes in the 'place' that we work.

Here are six ways that your traditional workspace is changing.

1. The non-traditional traditional workplace. Organizations like Google and Facebook have created creative workspaces that provide their employees with an ultra-creative workplace. Why, you ask? To improve productivity!2. The mobile workspace: A friend once told me that his office is created whenever he enters his truck with his cell phone. The mobile workspace has been perfected by traveling salesmen over many years. However, it is now gaining wider traction as it shifts from being a re-quirement to a convenience of choice.3. The virtual workspace: Through the use of a tele-phone, Skype, Meet.me and email, we can successfully transact business without any workspace. Tip: This category is about to ex-plode in its usage due to developments in virtual and augmented reality. I predict that a VR headset will be a staple piece of office equipment soon!4. The coffee-shop workplace: The corner coffee shop has become a regular workspace for people equipped with laptops, cellphones and a good pair of headphones. Even those who have offic-es escape to these zones for a change of pace.5. The rent-a-workspace: Businesses like the recently opened Palm Desert Office Suites pro-vide a turnkey workspace solution. Fully furnished offices and meeting rooms provide short or long-term spaces for businesses to operate in without the traditional barriers of office setup and leases.6. The creative commons rent-a-workspace. Business start-ups like SpaceWorks in Tacoma, The Toolry in Lynchburg or The Common Desk in Dallas provide people with a rent-a-workspace with an edge - the promise of like-minded people who will help you be more creative and innovative. Think of this as a blend of a rent-a-workspace with a Starbucks attitude and a focus on community. An overarching theme to these various workspaces is the word 'flexibility'. No matter what business you are in, you will need to be more flexible in order to meet the needs of your business. Contact me to discuss how I can help you lead an increasingly flexible workforce.

In business, you need all the help you can get. You need a team behind you that can help you ma-neuver the many complicated areas that we all must overcome in business. This certainly includes your CPA, your attorney, and a few others. Do you have banking needs to keep your banker on your team? Do you have investment matters so you should keep your investment advisor on your team? How about your insurance advisor? Every day, matters come before a business owner that would require the advice of a professional. At our office, communications with our clients is a number one priority. You would be much more suc-cessful to have the advice of your CPA up front on a matter, versus after the fact. In tax law, there are numerous ways to accomplish what you may be trying to do, and your CPA can help you maneuver those options to the best possible solution. In our office, we work closely with our clients and their advisors to make sure all potential problems can be anticipated and all opportunities are discussed. Obviously, this is easier said than done; we all have examples of problems that were not anticipated or opportunities we were not prepared for. The aspect of having those discussions with your professional advisors in the same room, at the same time, can be incredibly valuable. The cost of such a meeting may seem to be expensive at the time, but the money either saved or made in the future will far outweigh that cost. Make sure you have the best team possible to help you answer these questions, and use them.

Your airbag might be dangerous. Takata is a Japanese airbag manufacturer that produces low cost airbags using ammonium nitrate. Auto manufacturers liked the low price so used Takata airbags in millions of cars. The problem is ammonium nitrate degrades over time, especially in climates with high heat, humidity and fluctuat-ing temperature, and then in a minor crash it could explode with too much intensity shooting metal shrapnel shards into drivers and passengers. So far 14 people have been killed and around 100 have

been injured related to this issue in the US. The National Highway Traffic Safety Ad-ministration (NHTSA) has identified the problem and initiated the largest and most complex recall in US history. Around 1 in 8 US cars are affected: some 32 million. Most auto manufacturers are involved. Now it gets really weird. Remember how ammonium nitrate degrades over time? Normally these airbags can function for six years before becoming unsafe. Because there is a shortage of airbags, some car manufacturers are legally putting the old style airbags in new cars and they plan to issue a recall later when more replacement airbags are available! And it gets weirder! Remember how am-

monium nitrate is affected by heat, humidity and fluctuating temperature? Part of the “fix” involves added a drying agent to counteract humidity. But it turns out fluctuating temperature is still a prob-lem so some of the replacement airbags might need to be re-recalled! Takata be kidding me!

What to do? Find out if your car is affected. Your manufacturer, sales dealer, dealer service facility and certain insurance companies will make an effort to notify you of recalls. But the easiest way to be sure is go to safecar.gov and put your car’s VIN number in their search engine. If your car is recalled, take action. If you know there is a recall on your car, and you don’t take reasonable action and a pas-senger is hurt, you could be sued. Recall work can only be done at an authorized dealer…not by an independent mechan-ic. Priority is being given to high risk vehicles in hot, humid states. California cars built before 2011 are in the priority one group. Experts say that humidity is a factor but I would still be concerned about a car sitting in the 140 degree oven we call a garage in a Coachella Valley summer.

Takata Be Kidding Me!

Things have been going great at the State Capital this past month. The State legislature has been on Summer Recess. It’s an old joke. But, most of us feel there is a great deal of truth to it. To that note, we are providing a few quotes from notable people. Some are intelligent, some are humorous, and hopefully some are notewor-thy.

A system of morality which is based on relative emotional values is a mere illusion, a thoroughly vulgar concep-tion which has nothing sound in it and nothing true. SOCRATES

It is enough that the people know there was an election. The people who cast the votes decide nothing. The people who count the votes decide everything. JOSEPH STALIN

A politician thinks of the next election. A statesman, of the next generation. JAMES FEEMAN CLARKE

One of the reasons people hate politics is that truth is rare-ly a politician's objective. Election and power are. CAL THOMAS

Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please. MARK TWAIN

An election is a moral horror, as bad as a battle except for the blood; a mud bath for every soul concerned in it. GEORGE BERNARD SHAW
