To compassionately and respectfully empower individuals to make independent, informed

decisions about their sexual and reproductive lives by providing access to medically-sound health careand educational services, and by promoting public

policies to make those services available to all.

OUR MISSION

Page 3: NEVERTHELESS WE PERSISTED - Planned Parenthood...reached more than 14,500 women, men and young people in Nassau County with the information and resources they need to lead healthy

""These words, spoken by Hillary Clinton after her defeat in the 2016 presidential election, were a “call to arms” to people around the country who care about women’s rights, health care, social justice, immigrant rights, and the very tenets of our democracy. These are the very words that Planned Parenthood of Nassau County (PPNC) adopted as its 2017 mantra.

Indeed, just one day after President Trump was inaugurated, PPNC joined millions of people across the country, and more than 400,000 in New York City, for the first “Women’s March” to launch an unstoppable movement that would:

Resist assaults on women’s rights and health care;

Insist on protecting and preserving affordable and accessible health care and rights — especially reproductive health care;

Persist in providing medically-accurate, evidence-based sexuality education and outreach to people in our communities so that they have both the information and resources they need to live healthy, productive lives; and

Enlist volunteers, advocates and supporters, like you, to fuel the movement!

As we look back on 2017, all of us at PPNC are exceptionally proud that we were able to accomplish so much, especially given the backdrop of constant political turmoil and threats to defund Planned Parenthood. As you explore the pages of PPNC’s 2017 Annual Report, you will see that we were laser-focused on our mission, our patients and our future!

Here are just a few highlights of our proudest moments…

In our Hempstead and Massapequa health centers, PPNC undertook a major renovation project, improving our facilities to reflect the high-quality care that we provide. Upgrades included fully-refurbished waiting areas and exam rooms, which helped create a more soothing and welcoming environment for our more than 13,900 patients. We also added innovative health services for HIV prevention and treatment, and expanded access to our services for teens.

In the area of education and outreach, PPNC reached more than 14,500 women, men and young people in Nassau County with the information and resources they need to lead healthy and productive lives. Efforts in 2017 included an approach known as “enhanced outreach,” where PPNC educators partnered with other community-based organizations to impart essential health information and resources to otherwise hard-to-reach populations. We also extended access to our Sexuality Educators in public middle- and high-schools by adding office hours, and expanded our reach to young people by developing and disseminating original, educational content across a variety of digital media channels.

In the area of advocacy, to say we were busy would be a gross understatement! The relentless attacks on Planned Parenthood, the Affordable Care Act, birth control access and reproductive health kept our Public Affairs team — as well as our growing base of volunteers and activists — fully engaged! Last year, our army of 317 active volunteers joined PPNC for two emergency trips to Washington D.C., a volunteer training summit, several phone banks, and a host of other rallies, forums, house parties and protests. Moreover, our digital activist network grew to more than 15,000 people!

As you can see, last year, PPNC — with supporters like you by our side — was tireless in delivering the very best in reproductive health care to our patients, educating people in our community and connecting them to services, and advocating for women’s health care and rights.

While it’s true that 2017 brought us daunting challenges… nevertheless, we persisted! Thank you for all you do to stand with Planned Parenthood! We are so incredibly appreciative of your steadfast passion and support, each and every day.

With gratitude for all you do,

RESIST. INSIST. PERSIST. ENLIST.

PROVIDING HIGH-QUALITY CARE IS ALWAYS AT THE CENTER OF OUR MISSION.

We are thrilled to report that PPNC received full accreditation from Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), signifying that we continue to meet the most rigorous standards in the field of reproductive health care. Moreover, PPNC received glowing reports from the NYS Department of Health's Title X reviewers and AIDS Institute.

In face of threats to defund us, PPNC took bold and proactive measures to not just keep our doors open — but open them wider — with enhanced services and major improvements. In fact, in 2017, PPNC served more than 13,900 patients (over 27,500 visits) in our health centers in Hempstead, Glen Cove and Massapequa with comprehensive, compassionate, and affordable reproductive health care. We also provided thousands of patients with HIV and STI testing through our mobile medical unit, the Plan Van.

Each and every day, PPNC was committed to delivering state-of-the-art care, which included: gynecological exams; breast, cervical and testicular cancer screenings; prenatal care; birth control; emergency contraception; pregnancy testing; infertility screenings; HIV and STI testing, counseling and treatment; and safe and legal abortion care.

PPNC was the only agency to ever receive a flawless review from the NYS Department of Health for our Title X program.

WORKING AT PPNC IS GLAMOUR-OUS.

Over the course of several days last June, a reporter from the national magazine, Glamour, embedded herself with PPNC to give readers a “day in the life” view of what it’s like to work for Planned Parenthood. After talking to our providers and Center Assistants, attending staff meetings and observing our interactions with patients, the reporter produced a moving and in-depth article that showcased PPNC’s unparalleled commitment to patients and one another.

Following the publication of the article — which reached 20 million people nationwide — Wendy Naugle, Executive Editor at Glamour wrote to us to say:

“I’ve worked on many reproductive rights stories, and I’ve always been awestruck by the women (and men) who are on the front lines working to keep health care available for women… I am so thankful for the work you do every day… You show that this isn’t about politics; it’s about people, and the daily acts of kindness that help us all.”

EXPANDED SERVICES FOR TEENS.

In 2017, a growing number of young people took advantage of our Teen Clinic, in which our Hempstead Health Center is open exclusively for teens on Fridays between 4 and 6 PM. This program, collaborativelystaffed by health center personnel, Educators and Teen Advocates, effectively connected the sexuality education that we provide in schools with access to our services. In 2017, our Teen Clinic had more than 180 visits.

HEALTH FACILITIES THAT REFLECT THE QUALITY OF OUR CARE.

As part of our commitment to serving Nassau County well into the future and providing our patients with exceptional experiences, PPNC completed a full-scale renovation of our health centers in Hempstead and Massapequa, making them even more inviting for our patients and truly reflective of the quality of care that we provide. Improvements included: modernized waiting areas, featuring comfortable seating and inspirational artwork; new flooring and fresh paint throughout our buildings; and updated and soothing exam rooms, with gleaming countertops, new exam tables and stylish privacy curtains.

ON THE CUTTING-EDGE OF HIV PREVENTION.

In 2017, PPNC was proud to continue to provide “PrEP,” a revolutionary preventive medication for HIV. PPNC remained one of only a few health providers in Nassau County to offer this innovative treatment.

Integral to this effort was our work with the Plan Van, our mobile medical unit, which traveled throughout the county to bring awareness, education and testing to various communities that are at higher risk for HIV. To reach these groups, PPNC tabled at numerous health fairs and collaborated with a variety of community partners, such as Pride for Youth, DART Substance Abuse Treatment Program and Circulo de Hispanidad.

In total, PPNC's HIV prevention and testing efforts reached thousands and provided more than 6,200 HIV tests in our Plan Van and health centers.

7

Page 8: NEVERTHELESS WE PERSISTED - Planned Parenthood...reached more than 14,500 women, men and young people in Nassau County with the information and resources they need to lead healthy

As a recognized leader in reproductive care and education, PPNC continued to connect comprehensive, medically-accurate sexuality information to the services at our health centers by: teaching sex ed in the local public schools; enlisting young people to serve as peer-educators; engaging college-age adults; and conducting enhanced outreach in the community at large.

Together, these efforts enabled PPNC to reach more than 14,500 individuals in Nassau County to help them make responsible and informed reproductive health choices, and lead healthy lives.

BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN EDUCATION AND SERVICES.

Throughout 2017, PPNC continued its longtimerelationships with the public school districts in Hempstead, Roosevelt, Uniondale and Westbury to deliver sexuality education to middle- and high-school students on a weekly basis. PPNC’s Sexuality Educators also conducted a number of topic-specific presentations at other schools across Nassau County, including Valley Stream, Freeport, Elmont and Long Beach. Together, these sessions provided multiple opportunities for our Educators to build trusting relationships with more than 1,400 students, and guide them to our Teen Clinic for reproductive care and resources.

To meet the needs of students in our communities and school districts, PPNC hired an additional bilingual Sexuality Educator, Karen Villarejo, to support our efforts in classrooms with a growing number of monolingual Spanish speaking students. By having an Educator who could communicate in both English and Spanish, PPNC helped ensure that all students could comprehend the essential information they were receiving.

PEER-TO-PEER INNOVATION.

In 2017, PPNC continued its Teen Advocate Program (TAP), in which high school students are trained to educate their peers about sexuality and connect them to PPNC for services. The class of 2017 had eight teens who: regularly met with their schoolmates and other peers to engage them in various educational activities; participated in community outreach events; and interacted with young patients during our Teen Clinic.

As part of their work to reach young people “where they are” with the information they need to stay healthy and safe, our TAP teens worked with PPNC and a digital media expert to develop a parody music video that put essential information into a format that would resonate with their peers: a rap video. The final product was as effective as it was entertaining, especially because it was rich with teen-relevant cultural references and humor!

You can watch the music video online at: bit.ly/PPNC-ooouuu

ENGAGING A MILLENIAL AUDIENCE.

Surrounded by several local colleges and universities, PPNC recognized the role it could play in informing, engaging and providing care for women and men between the ages of 19-29. With special funding from the Pritchard Foundation to target this group, PPNC developed a multi-faceted social media and digital video campaign, called So Much More, aimed at raising awareness that PPNC is “so much more” than people realize.

The centerpiece of this campaign was a three-part parody video series called The Long Island Reproductive Medium (LIRM). The series — whose main character was named “Utheresa Caputo,” a fictional psychic who could “read” reproductive systems — delivered essential information about PPNC’s reproductive health services in a humorous and relatable way. Episodes of LIRM were shared through social media, and supported with “memes” and original blog content. In total, the LIRM campaign garnered more than 100,000 views across multiple social media channels, press coverage from both local and national news sites, and brought over 100 local millenials together to attend two in-person campaign events — a launch party and "reproductive reading" and video screening. ENHANCED OUTREACH.

PPNC also conducted ongoing education to Nassau County communities through “enhanced outreach,” a practice by which our Sexuality Educators regularly visit strategic locations in the community throughout the year to provide information and connect people to reproductive health care at PPNC. We reached more than 6,500 local residents through street outreach, health fairs and office hours in local schools.

In addition, our Promotoras program, in which Latinas provide sexuality information and advocacy outreach to their Latinx peers, experienced important advancements in 2017. Thanks to special funding from Planned Parenthood Federation of America, PPNC was able to hire and train four new Promotoras in September, who began outreach at community centers, laundromats, grocery stores and health fairs at the start of 2018.

LAUNCHING THE LOCAL RESISTANCE.

On Day 2 of the Trump Administration, PPNC joined more than 400,000 people in the streets of New York City to takepart in the Women’s March — one of several historic protests that took place on January 21st across the country and around the world.

Indeed, PPNC was front and center at the New York City march, demonstrating our support for women’s health and reproductive rights, and sending a powerful message to our elected officials at the state and federal levels that all people deserve high-quality, affordable health care and the right to make their own decisions about their reproductive lives.

The presidential inauguration ceremony had barely come to a close when it became clear that the Trump Administration planned to wage a constant war on women’s health care and rights. However, women of all ages, from all backgrounds and all walks of life were ready to fight back. And, so was PPNC!

Over the course of 2017, PPNC recruited nearly 1,800 new supporters who pledged to takea greater role in advocating for Planned Parenthood and reproductive rights by attendinglobby visits, making phone calls, taking digital actions and boarding busses to D.C. and Albany to rally! In addition, our activist network grew to more than 15,000 by the end of the year.

GROWING A GRASSROOTS MOVEMENT.

Just days after the Women's March, PPNC supporter and Roslyn restaurant owner, Nancy Serna, hosted a motivating and inspiring open house at Thyme Restaurant. More than 300 people came out during a Nor’easter to sign up to become vol-unteers, advocates and activists — and “Stand with PP.” This event was followed by a number of impromptu “house parties” and business-based friend- and fund-raisers, where small groups of PPNC supporters talked about the issues, recruited new friends and advocates and raised money for PPNC.

BOARDING THE BUSSES.

On January 30th, PPNC brought 129 advocates to Albany for the Planned Parenthood Empire State Acts (PPESA) Annual Day of Action to meet with all 15 of our state representatives — more than doubling the number of advocates we have brought in past years. With a total of 1,700 participants from across the state, this Day of Action was New York’s largest one yet. Throughout February, PPNC built on this momentum and continued to meet with our congressional representatives, as well as key state senators with nearly 70 volunteers participating in these local efforts.

SUCCESSFULLY BLOCKED THREEATTACKS ON HEALTH CARE.

The summer months brought three different attemptsto repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and “defund” Planned Parenthood (PP) by denying us Medicaid reimbursements and our patients with critically-needed care. With a passionate and enthusiastic volunteer base, PPNC joined the national protests to save the ACA and protect health care and rights for all. Our efforts included more than 80 people traveling with us to D.C. twice for emergency protests and canvassesagainst a repeal; a rally in at our Hempstead Health Center in June to showcase the local impact of defunding Planned Parenthood — attended by more than 100 Long Islanders; and 89 people participatingin adopt-a-state phone banks to urge constituents of swing vote Senators to contact their representatives! These efforts and more made us successful in defeating all three threats to roll back the ACA and "defund" PP.

TRAINING OUR TROOPS.

Towards keeping our activists engaged, and ensuringthey had the skills to become effective advocates, PPNChosted its first-ever Pink Out Power Up (POPU) Summiton July 11, 2017. More than 100 people turned out to this interactive event, where they learned how to “Stand with PP” by canvassing, lobbying, phone banking, attending eventsand volunteering at our health centers!

Volunteers at our first-ever POPU summit!

WORKING WITH OUR PARTNERS IN SOCIAL JUSTICE.

PPNC fights for all people and advocates to ensure that everyone in our community hasaccess to the essential sexual and reproductive health care services and information they need and deserve. In 2017, we not only continued to work collaboratively with other progressive organizations on Long Island to counter anti- choice attacks on the federal, state and local levels, but also to protect the rights of the communities we serve by working with our local social justice partners, such as Long Island Civic Engagement Table, Make the Road NY, NY Civil Liberties Union and Black Lives Matter.

During a year that was punctuated by constant threats to our funding — and our very existence — the outpouring of support from friends and funders was overwhelmingly wonderful and welcomed. Indeed, PPNC experienced record-breaking crowds at our events, and exceeded our fundraising goals — giving our patients and staff a sense of support and security.

SPECIAL EVENTS.

On May 4, 2017, PPNC held its “We Will Survive” Gala, honoring Diane and Bernie Yatauro. This event was our most successful fundraiser to date, with 400 guests joining us in a show of support. Later in the year, nearly 300 people turned out for our Annual Fall Luncheon —another record! At this event, PPNC honored its abortion providers in acknowledgment of the critical services they deliver every day to thousands of patients. In addition, our Luncheon attendees were inspired and moved by keynote speaker and abortion provider, Dr. Willie Parker, who dedicates his life to providing services in the deep South, where access to abortion is severely limited.

SHOWING OUR GRIT.

For the first time in its history, PPNC formed a team for a mud-filled obstacle challenge and fundraiser known as the “Tough Mudder”! Ten brave women and men volunteered to raise money for PPNC by overcoming hurdles, sloshing through mud, and testing their endurance and strength. The race was both an awareness event and fundraiser, and truly the perfect metaphor of what it takes to stand up for reproductive health care and rights in a hostile political climate!
