weekly radIo showJay Norvell’s weekly radio show with John Ramey is on Wednesday evenings from 6-7 p.m. It is available in Northern Nevada on ESPN Radio 94.5 and an archive will be post-ed on NevadaWolfPack.com/audio within 24 hours. The Mackay press box will also serve as a game and media operations location post-game so the Petersen location will likely be a quieter work environment after the conclu-sion of the press conference.

2017 NEVADA WOLF PACK FOOTBALL — GAME NOTES

THE NORVELL FILEHEAD COACH JAY NORVELL (@CoachJayNorvell)

Jay Norvell was hired as the 26th head football coach in Nevada program history on Dec. 9, 2016, ushering in a new era of Wolf Pack football. The appointment marks the first head coaching tenure for Norvell, but he is certainly well versed in the game of football with a 31-year coaching career that spans college football’s top levels and the National Football League. Norvell, 53, has coached in both the BCS National Championship Game with the Oklahoma Sooners and Super Bowl XXXVII with the Oakland Raiders. Throughout his three decades of coaching, he has stops at Iowa, Northern Iowa, Wiscon-sin, Iowa State, the Indianapolis Colts, the Oakland Raiders, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, UCLA, and most recently, Arizona State. An All-Big 10 defensive back during a stellar playing career at Iowa, Norvell has made his coaching mark on the other side of the ball, coordinating offensive schematics while at Oklahoma, Texas and Arizona State. He’s tutored a number of top players, including NFL wide receivers Kenny Stills, Sterling Shepard and Marvin Harrison as well Ryan Broyles, who left Oklahoma as the NCAA’s all-time receptions leader. Throughout his career Norvell has had a hand in postseason football as well with 14 bowl game appearances, including the 2009 National Championship, four NFL playoff games and the Super Bowl appearance. He spent the 2016 season with Arizona State, his only year with that program, before coming to Nevada. Prior to his time with the Sun Devils he served the 2015 season as the wide receivers coach at Texas and took over play-calling responsibilities for the Long-horns at the beginning of the season, helping to produce two wins over top 15 teams. Before his one year at Texas, Norvell spent seven seasons at Oklahoma, which included three as the assistant offensive coordinator and receivers coach (2008-10), and four years as co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach (2011-14). While with the Sooners he coached three of the top four players on OU’s all-time receptions list, including Broyles, Stills and Juaquin Iglesias, oversaw five of the program’s top six single-season reception marks, and helped his receiving corps earn 10 all-conference and three academic all-con-ference first team honors. In 2014, Oklahoma ranked 20th in the nation in scoring offense and was 23rd in total offense. Under Norvell, the Sooners also had a strong rushing attack as the team ranked 10th in rushing offense in 2014 and was 18th in 2013, which were the program’s highest averages since 1990. He worked with a number of talented running backs at OU, including All-Pro Demarco Murray and All-American Samaje Perine. Prior to his appointment at Oklahoma, Norvell served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at both UCLA in 2007 and Nebraska from 2004-06. The Cornhuskers were one of only two teams in the nation to rank in the top 25 in total offense, scoring of-fense, rushing offense and passing offense in 2006. That same year Nebraska totaled nine wins and finished the regular season as Big 12 North Division Champions. Aside from the college game, Norvell coached for six seasons in the NFL, four of which were with the Colts and two with the Raiders. While with Oakland he coached tight ends for two seasons and worked alongside an offense that included Hall of Fame receivers Jerry Rice and Tim Brown. His trip to the Super Bowl in 2002 was led by an offense that led the NFL in total yards and passing yards per game. Norvell joined the Colts coaching staff in 1998 as the wide receivers coach and mentored Harrison to 385 receptions, 5,376 receiving yards and 48 touchdowns during his tenure. His time with the Colts was also the first four seasons of two-time Super Bowl champion Peyton Manning’s career. Norvell was assistant head coach at Iowa State from 1995-97 where he worked with quar-terbacks and receivers, including Sage Rosenfels, who went on to play with the Minne-sota Vikings. From 1989-94, Norvell coached offensive line, receivers and special teams at Wisconsin, which followed his first full-time position as receivers coach at Northern Iowa in 1988.

A 1986 graduate of Iowa, Norvell was an All-Big Ten defensive back and recorded a league-high seven interceptions in 1985 as he helped the Hawkeyes put together a 10-2 record, a conference championship and a spot in the Rose Bowl. He was a member of the Chicago Bears in 1987 before he began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at his alma mater.

Norvell, who hails from Madison, Wis., has a wife, Kim, and son, Jaden. He is the author of a book, “Complete Wide Receiver,” which was published in 2012.

LAST TIME THEY METThe Nevada football team saw standout performances from former QB Tyler Stewart and for-mer RB James Butler, and a career game from Wyatt Demps. But at the end of the day and with the game on the line, the Wolf Pack defense stood up and took four shots from Fresno State inside the 5-yard line and never broke.

The goal-to-go stand sealed a 27-22 bounce-back win for the Wolf Pack over Fresno State and even Nevada’s record at 3-3 overall and 1-1 in Mountain West play. Butler ran for 175 yards on a career-high 37 carries while Demps caught nine passes for 124 yards and three touchdowns - all career-highs - as the Pack built a 21-6 halftime lead and then held on for the wild win in front of 22,411 fans at Mackay Stadium.

2017 NEVADA WOLF PACK FOOTBALL — GAME NOTES

SERIES HISTORYNevada and Fresno State have been playing football against one another since the jazz era, 1923 to be exact. The 48-game series is one of the longest in the Wolf Pack’s history. The series has been competitive too, with the Bulldogs currently leading, 27-20-1. The only tie came in the 1928 season when the Pack and Bulldogs tied 12-12 in Reno. Heading into Saturday’s con-test, Nevada has won the last two meetings but own just a 9-15 record on the road. There have also been eight shutouts, but none since 1942.

NEW RETURN FACESNevada has thrown a few different looks out onto the field for its kick returns and punt returns through four games. Kaleb Fossum fielded two punts for 18 yards in the opener at Northwest-ern. Following injury, junior CB Vosean Crumbie took over on punt return duty and is averag-ing five yards per return.

Crumbie has also been a bright spot on kick returns with four returns for 102 yards and a long return of 35 yards. True freshman Berdale Robins got in on the kick return action against Idaho State and impressed with five returns for 105 yards in that single game, the most kickoff return yards by a Wolf Pack player since Elijah Mitchell’s 116 against Utah State last season. He also took three kick returns at Washington State for 45 yards. Junior RB Blake Wright and true fresh-man WR Daiyan Henley each fielded a kick return at WSU as well, making it six players who have taken a kick return.

Nevada is averaging 22.65 yards per kick return through four games, which ranks in the top 50 in the nation and is fifth in the Mountain West. Robins’ 18.8 yards per kick return rank 88th in the country and 10th in the conference.

SACK!Through the first four games of the 2017 season the Nevada defense has recorded seven sacks. It took the defense last season until the fourth game to record its first sack. Senior LB Austin Paulhus, junior DB Asauni Rufus and junior DE Malik Reed are all tied for the team lead with 1.5 sacks each. Additionally Paulhus’ 1.6 tackles for loss per game ranks 21st in the nation.

TRUE FRESHMAN QBTrue freshman Kaymen Cureton took the reigns at quarterback for the first time in his colle-giate career against Idaho State and got his second consecutive start at Washington State. Cu-reton is one of just seven true freshmen from around the nation to earn a start at quarterback.

2017 NEVADA WOLF PACK FOOTBALL — GAME NOTES

THE RUFUS ON FIREJunior DB Asauni Rufus has proved to be one of the best defensive members of the Wolf Pack and has shown why through four games. In his four games he ranks fourth on the team with 23 tackles, but made 10 at Washington State, a season high. He has also added 5.0 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, two pass break ups, has forced two fumbles and recovered one more. Addition-ally he went over the 200 tackle mark for his career, needing 57 more to pass John Ramatici for 10th all-time.

IMPROVED RUN-DLast season the Wolf Pack run defense ranked near the bottom of the nation in run defense, giving up an average of 6.1 yards per rush. Even though the team has only played four games the run defense has been a bright spot for Nevada so far this season. The Pack is surrender-ing an average of 2.9 yards per rush through its first four games and held Northwestern and Toledo’s top rushers to just over 100 yards.

PACK’S TOP FIVE MARKS IN THE MOUNTAIN WESTNevada ranks in the top five in the Mountain West in the following statistical categories; 4th down conversion percentage defense (5th, 40.0), fewest penalties per game (5th, 6.75), kickoff return defense (5th, 16.5), kickoff returns (5th, 22.65), punt return defense (1st, 5.5), rushing defense (5th, 129.8), team tackles for loss (1st, 8.8).

PUNTING PLUSNevada sophomore punter Quinton Conaway had struggled in his first couple of games but has posted much improved performances in the last two games. Conaway punted four times against Idaho State and averaged 46.8 yards per punt, his best through four games. He also added a career long punt of 55 yards. At Washington State he punted a career-high seven times. In his last two games he is averaging 42.2 yards per punt with two touchbacks and six fair catches.

BREAKOUT PERFORMANCESTrue freshman WR McLane Mannix turned some heads in the season opener at Northwestern, racking up 76 yards on just two catches, but he has since followed that up with even more im-pressive outings. The Texas native caught six passes against Toledo, including a 75-yard touch-down reception, and added seven grabs against Idaho State.

Not only was the 75-yard touchdown reception against Toledo a career long reception for Mannix and a career long pass for QB Ty Gangi, but it was also the longest pass play by the Wolf Pack since 2011 when Tyler Lantrip hit Rashard Matthews for 90 yards against UNLV. Addi-tionally Mannix’s 139 receiving yards vs. the Rockets were the most receiving yards in a single game by a Wolf Pack player since Hasaan Henderson racked up 141 against Boise State in 2014.

Mannix began his collegiate career with touchdown receptions in back-to-back-to-back games after hauling in another one against Idaho State and is already up to over 300 yards receiving. His three touchdown receptions are tied for 32nd-most in the nation, and his total of 316 receiving yards ranks 39th nationally and fourth in the Mountain West.

DEMPS COMING ONSenior WR Wyatt Demps has been one of the Wolf Pack’s top targets through the first four games of the season. Demps leads the team with 22 receptions and is averaging 10.5 yards per catch. He is tied with true freshman McLane Mannix for the team lead in touchdown recep-tions, each hauling in three. Against Idaho State, Demps caught two TD passes, making him the first Nevada receiver to have multiple TD catches in a single game this season. He is the only player on the Wolf Pack roster with a multiple TD receiving game (he has two in his career after he caught three in the Fresno State game last year).

2017 NEVADA WOLF PACK FOOTBALL — GAME NOTESRUSHING ATTACKNevada totaled more than 200 yards on the ground against Idaho State for the first time in 2017. Sophomore RBs Jaxson Kincaide and Kelton Moore both fell just four yards shy of reach-ing 100 rushing yards in a single game for the first time in their careers. Kincaide was three yards short of tying his career high of 99 yards, while Moore’s 96 yards established a new career high. He also recorded a career high in rushing attempts with 21. Junior RB Blake Wright also got in on the action with his first carries of the season. Wright finished with four carries for 21 yards and his first career rushing touchdown. It was the first rushing touchdown by a Nevada back this season.

Additionally, sophomore RB Maliek Broady got his first touches of the season and of his career last Saturday at Washington State. Broady finished with four carries for 17 yards and he put up Nevada’s lone touchdown of the game, the first of his career.

TWO-POINT CONVERSIONAgainst Idaho State, Nevada converted on a two-point conversion attempt in the fourth quarter when QB Kaymen Cureton hit WR Trevion Armstrong in the endzone for the two points. It was the first successful two-point conversion by the Wolf Pack since Cody Fajardo hit Hasaan Hen-derson for the extra two points against BYU in 2014.

WALK-ON SURPRISEIn Nevada’s game against Toledo, the Pack had a new face on kickoff duty for the second half. Ramiz Ahmed, who had been cleared to play the night before the contest, suited up for the Wolf Pack and handled two kickoffs in the second half. Ahmed impressed in his debut, sending both of his kickoffs well into the endzone for touchbacks. Through his three games played, he has taken eight kickoffs and had seven go for touchbacks. Ahmed made the team via the walk-on tryouts held a couple of weeks prior.

IT’S GOOD!Wolf Pack placekicker Spencer Pettit is perfect through the first four games of the season, going 3-for-3 on field goal attempts. Pettit connected on both of his field goal attempts in the season opener at Northwestern and hit from 31 yards with under a minute to go before halftime, send-ing the team into the locker room with a 17-7 lead. He also connected from 33 yards out for the Pack’s only points of the second half. Against Toledo he made his only attempt of the game, but set a new career long of 47 yards in the process. Pettit is now 10-of-12 in his career, raising his field goal percentage to 83 percent. Additionally Pettit is 8-for-8 on PATs.

SCHOLARSHIP ALERTA total of four Wolf Pack student-athletes, formerly walk-ons, were awarded scholarships during fall camp: senior OL Thomas Newton, junior TE Trae Carter-Wells, sophomore PK Spencer Pettit and sophomore RB Maliek Broady.

STRENGTH OF SCHEDULEThe Wolf Pack’s 2017 schedule consists of eight teams that advanced to bowl games last season; Northwestern, Pinstripe Bowl; Toledo, Raycom Media Camellia Bowl; Washington State, Holiday Bowl; Hawai’i, Hawai’i Bowl; Colorado State, Famous Idaho Potato Bowl; Air Force, NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl; Boise State, Cactus Bowl; San Diego State, Las Vegas Bowl.

GETTING IT DONE IN THE CLASSROOMAfter summer classes had commenced, the Wolf Pack football team posted a cumulative grade-point average of 3.008 for the 5,667 credit hours current members of the team had logged. The 5,667 credit hours take in to account every credit hour by every current member of the team, which dates back to 2013. Nevada is one of just three FBS schools to accomplish this, along with Northwestern and Boise State.

Nevada is 6-6 all-time in its FBS history when it comes to overtime games. The school’s history in overtime games includes being part of the first-ever overtime game in FBS (I-A) history – the 1995 Las Vegas Bowl.

2017 NEVADA WOLF PACK FOOTBALL — GAME NOTESYOUNG GUNSThrough the first four games of the season, head coach Jay Norvell hasn’t wasted any time in getting his true freshmen some experience. So far there have been eight true freshmen that have seen time on the field for Nevada: QB Kaymen Cureton, DT Chris Green, WR McLane Man-nix, DB Nephi Sewell, TE Reagan Roberson, WR Elijah Cooks, WR Berdale Robins and WR Daiyan Henley. Most have made significant contributions too. Mannix has three touchdown receptions and over 300 yards receiving, Henley has a touchdown reception under his belt, Sewell is flying around on defense with 18 tackles and an interception, Robins totaled over 100 kickoff return yards against Idaho State and Cureton got his first start at QB vs. the Bengals.

Additionally, Nevada has started four as those true freshmen this season (Sewell, Cureton, Man-nix, Henley), which is tied for sixth-most in the nation:

1. Illinois - 10 (5 offense, 5 defense)2. Baylor - 8 (5 offense, 3 defense)3. Ball State - 7 (3 offense, 4 defense) LSU - 7 (3 offense, 4 defense)5. Oregon - 5 (1 offense, 4 defense)6. Nevada - 4 (3 offense, 1 defense) Texas A&M - 4 (3 offense, 1 defense)

DEGREES COMPLETEDA total of nine Nevada football student-athletes have already obtained a college degree prior to the start of the 2017 season. That number is tied for sixth-most in the nation along with Kent State, New Mexico, South Alabama, Texas Tech and West Virginia. The Wolf Pack players with degrees in hand are: Justin Brent, Austin Corbett, Ziad Damanhoury, Jimbo Davis, Sean Krepsz, Ryan Mack, Thomas Newton, Jaden Sawyer and Travis Wilson.

The Porter brothers are local products from Reno and graduates of Hug High School. The Sewell brothers hail from Nevada’s neighbor to the east, Utah, and are both gradu-ates of Desert Hills High School in the town of St. George.

LOGGING FEWER MILESThe difference between miles traveled for Nevada’s 2016 season compared to its 2017 season is significantly lighter. Last year, with two trips to Indiana and one to Hawai’i, the Wolf Pack logged a season total of 8,487 miles. In 2017, with just one trip to the Midwest and most others on the western side of the country, the Pack will log just 4,852 miles, a 3,635 mile difference.

A native of Honolulu, Ma graduated from Iolani High School with all-state honorable mention honors prior to joining Nevada. Ma redshirted in 2015. The jersey number 59 will not be worn by any member of the team for two more sea-sons.

EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Quarterback Clayton Thorson scored two touchdowns in the final six minutes and Northwestern beat Nevada 31-20 in Saturday’s opener for both teams.

Trailing 20-17 in the fourth quarter, Thorson directed a 75-yard drive that culminated in his following the block of right guard Tom-my Doles to crash the end zone for a 24-20 lead. Thorson scored on another 1-yard plunge with 52 seconds to play, ending Nevada’s upset hopes in Jay Norvell’s first game as the Wolf Pack’s coach.

Nevada led 17-7 lead after a pair of Ty Gangi touchdown passes and Spencer Pettit’s 31-yard field goal late in the first half, only to squander the advantage in the third quarter. Following Charlie Kuh-bander’s 23-yard field goal, Northwestern tied the game at 17 on Thorson’s 19-yard TD pass to Riley Lee.

Spencer Pettit’s 33-yard field goal with 10:13 to play moved Nevada ahead, 20-17. But Thorson, 6 of 7 pass completions on the subse-quent drive and 28 of 38 for 352 yards overall, moved Northwestern to the 1-yard line, then ran it in for the score that gave the Wildcats the lead for good.

THE TAKEAWAY

Nevada: The Wolf Pack showed plenty in Norvell’s first game as

head coach, for three quarters.

Northwestern: Thorson’s 163.6 quarterback rating may not hold up all year, but it signified why coach Pat Fitzgerald has faith in the ju-nior.

How It Happened: Nevada hung tight for the majority of the game, powered by Wyatt Demps snags and a strong defensive perfor-mance. The offense slowed down in the second half, though, which proved costly.

Play of the Game: Ty Gangi found true freshman McLane Mannix over the middle for a 41-yard touchdown pass in the second quar-ter, giving Nevada a 14-7 lead.

Player of the Game: Wyatt Demps. Demps eclipsed 1,000 career re-ceiving yards with his second catch of the game. He also converted a touchdown on his first grab of the afternoon and hauled in a total of five balls.

RENO, Nevada (AP) -- Logan Woodside threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns as Toledo beat Nevada 37-24 on Saturday night.

Terry Swanson added two more TDs and led the Rockets (2-0) with 101 yards rushing.

Jameson Vest kicked a 25-yard field goal midway through the first quarter and the Rockets never trailed after that.

Woodside threw a touchdown to Dionte Johnson with 3:21 left in the first and Swanson ran it in from three yards for another score, making it 20-3 with 10:59 to go in the second quarter.

Swanson ran for his second touchdown with 8:41 left in the third and Woodside hit Cody Thompson to make it 34-17 with 3:45 re-maining in the quarter.

Nevada’s Ty Gangi threw a 75-yard touchdown late in the third to cut the Rockets lead to 34-24 but Vest made another field goal to make it 37-24 with 4:31 to play.

Gangi finished with 277 yards passing and two scores for the Wolf Pack (0-2).

How It Happened: Nevada’s offense struggled to stay on the field and, combined with great field position for Toledo on most drives, the defense couldn’t keep up with the Rocket offense.

Play of the Game: Wide open on the side of the field, Ty Gangi found freshman McLane Mannix, who took the ball 75 yards to the endzone on the very first play of the drive.

Player of the Game: McLane Mannix. Mannix racked up 139 yards off six catches, including a 75 yard touchdown reception on the first play of a drive. Mannix’s 139 yards were the most of any player in the game.

RENO, Nev. (AP) -- Matt Peterson fell on top of an onside kick with less than a minute to play, preserving Idaho State’s 30-28 victory, its first over an FBS opponent since 2000, and foiling a Nevada come-back Saturday night.

Parker Johnson kicked three field goals and Tanner Gueller passed for a pair of touchdowns as Idaho State (2-1) built a 30-7 lead before Nevada (0-3) closed with three unanswered touchdowns.

Gueller passed for 269 yards and Michael Dean added 133 yards and a touchdown on five carries.

Kaymen Cureton went 19 for 33 for 205 yards and three touch-downs for Nevada, including a pair of TD strikes to Wyatt Demps -- of 10 and 3 yards -- in a 153-yard fourth quarter as the Wolfpack closed to within two points.

A two-point conversion pass failed with 58 seconds remaining and ISU, which had lost 27 straight games to FBS opponents, recovered the ensuing onside kick.

Nevada outgained Idaho State 423-383 in total yards, but lost three turnovers and the Bengals sacked Cureton four times.

How It Happened: The Wolf Pack fumbled the ball seven times, al-though only losing two, making it tough to keep any momentum going on the offense

Play of the Game: With less than a minute on the clock, the Wolf Pack finished its frive down the field with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Kaymen Cureton to Wyatt Demps. It marked Demps’ second TD of the game and Cureton’s third.

Player of the Game: Wyatt Demps. Demps caught five passes for 46 yards, hauling in two touchdowns for the Wolf Pack. One of those included a TD with less than a minute on the clock as part of Nevada’s close comeback.

PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) — Washington State quarterback Luke Falk said the Air Raid offense is a sight to behold when it’s clicking.

Falk threw for 478 yards and five touchdowns, and No. 18 Washington State beat Nevada 45-7 for the team’s best start in 16 years.

Washington State (4-0), which opened the 2001 season by winning its first seven games, piled up 560 yards of offense and five sacks.

Nevada, which also runs the Air Raid, was held to 151 total yards as the Wolf Pack (0-4) fell to 0-17 on the road against opponents in the Top 25. Nevada came in as a 28-point underdog.

Washington State led 35-0 at halftime.

Nevada coach Jay Norvell felt his team was overmatched by the Cougars of the Pac-12.

“This is the first game where I felt that we didn’t handle the physical matchup on the defensive line,” he said.

“Overall we didn’t mount much of a charge offensively to get us back into the game,” Norvell said. “I was disappointed about that.”

A 52-yard pass from Falk to Tavares Martin Jr. set up Falk’s 12-yard touchdown pass to Jamal Morrow in the first quarter as Washington State took a 7-0 lead.

Falk’s shovel pass to James Williams went for 13 yards and a touchdown to put the Cougars ahead 14-0. It was the 100th touchdown pass of Falk’s career, pass-ing Matt Leinart of Southern Cal for third in Pac-12 history.

Nevada went three-and-out on its first three possessions and produced only seven yards of offense in the first quarter. Starting quarterback Kaymen Cure-ton was replaced by David Cornwell, but it didn’t help much.

Martin caught a short pass from Falk and turned it into a 40-yard touchdown early in the second quarter for a 21-0 lead.

Williams ran for a touchdown and Jamire Calvin added a 6-yard touchdown reception before halftime.

Falk hit Martin for a 19-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Maliek Broady ran 3 yards for Nevada’s first touchdown with 1:56 left in the game.

Play of the Game: Maliek Broady helped the Pack avoid a shutout with a 3-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.

Player of the Game: Nephi Sewell had another career game, recording a total of 10 tackles and picking off a ball late in the game.
