RANKINGSNevada leads the Western Athletic Conference in four main sta-tistical categories. The Wolf Pack is tops in the conference andfifth in the national in total offense at 518.70 yards per game andleads in sacks allowed at 1.20 per game. Nevada does not leadthe WAC, but the Wolf Pack is ranked ninth in rushing offenseand 10th nationally in punt returnsIndividually, Nevada leads the WAC in four statistical categories.Senior wideout Rishard Matthews leads, and is 13th nationally,in receiving (104.5 ypg). Senior defensive tackle Brett Roy leadsand is fourth nationally in both sacks (1.0 per game) and tacklesfor loss (1.75 per game). And freshman quarterback Cody Fa-jardo leads the conference in passing efficiency at 147.14.

COMEBACK WINSNevada head coach Chris Ault has well over 200 wins in his Hallof Fame career three dozen of those victories have been come-back victories in the last 30 minutes of games. Ault entered thisyear with 34 come-from-behind wins and he moved that num-ber to 36 with back-to-back comeback wins to wrap up play inOctober. On Oct. 22 against Fresno State, Nevada trailed 24-23 in the thirdquarterback when Fresno State scored on its opening drive ofthe half. Nevada took the lead for good when Bubba Boudreauxrecovered a fumbled punt return in the end zone and the Packnever looked back en route to the 45-38 win.On Oct. 29 at New Mexico State, Nevada trailed going into thesecond half, 27-20. But the Wolf Pack scored the first threetouchdowns of the second half to take control of the game asNevada would go on to win 48-34.Ault, of course, was the first to engineer the greatest comebackin the history of the NCAA when he guided the Pack back from a35-point deficit against Weber State in 1991.

MASON MAGLEBY, JACK OF ALL TRADESThird-string quarterback Mason Magleby has served in a varietyof roles for the Wolf Pack this year. He has served as the team’sholder on all extra-point and field goal attempts. He also servedas team’s long-snapper for a game when senior Scott Frisbie wasout. That made Magleby just the second quarterback in thecountry this year to also serve as a long-snapper (Brandon Frickeat Central Michigan is the other).Magleby also successfully executed Nevada’s first fake field goalattempt in at least a decade when he rolled out and found KolbyArendse from 15 yards out for a touchdown. That TD added to animpressive (albeit short) statistical line for Magleby this season. He is 5-of-5 for 88 yards and two touchdowns with an efficiencyof 379.84.

MATTHEWS HAS BEEN THE MANWideout Rishard Matthews emerged late in 2010 as a go-tothreat in the Wolf Pack offense and the senor is emerging as oneof the better receivers in the country this year.

Eight catches for 100 yards at Oregon.Seven catches for 77 yards at San Jose State.Five catches for 107 yards and a touchdown at Texas Tech.Four catches for 84 yards and a touchdown at Boise State.Seven catches for 148 yards against Fresno State plus an 86-

yard punt return for TDEight catches for 118 yards and two touchdowns against

Hawaii.Racked up 173 all-purpose yards against Louisiana Tech (86

receiving; 87 punt returns)Matthews has five 100-yard receiving efforts on the year andseventh in his career at Nevada, which are both tops in the WACamong active receivers. He has caught a pass in all 23 games ofhis career, which is second on the team and in the WAC behindBrandon Wimberly, who has caught a pass in all 27 games of hiscareer and 27 games in a row. Wimberly will miss this season dueto medical reasons.

KICKING WOESNevada has already had to use four different players in the kick-ing game so far this season as injuries have taken their toll.

The Wolf Pack opened the season with sophomore AnthonyMartinez as the team’s place-kicker, junior Allen Hardison as thekickoff specialist and senior Jake Hurst as the team’s punter. Andthat was the situation through three games until Martinez, whose name is already in Nevada’s career record book, sufferedan injury in practice.Beginning with the Boise State game on Oct. 1, Hardison alsotook over the team’s place-kicking duties and fared well. He con-nected on all 19 extra points and 7-of-10 on field goals, includ-ing a 48-yarder against Fresno State. But then came the New Mexico State game on Oct. 29, whenHardison went down in the second half with an injury. Thatforced Hurst, the punter, to take over the kicking duties and thesenior came through with three extra points while also handlingkickoffs. Against Hawaii on Nov. 12, true freshman Colin Ditsworth madehis collegiate debut as he took over the kickoff duties withHardison still ailing. Hurst remained as the team’s place-kickerand hit all six extra points.Martinez is also still out with injury. He is only a sophomore buthis name can already be found on the school’s career PAT Top 10in the record book.Martinez set a school record during the historic 2010 seasonwith 76 extra-points, which was 13 better than the previousschool record. That number alone is already good for ninth onNevada’s all-time career PAT list. The record is held by BrettJaekle (2005-08) with 211. The next spot in front of Martinez isheld by Charlie Lee, who is eighth with 88 from 1972-75. Mar-tinez is 8-of-9 on PATs in 2011 to give him 84 for his career. Butthe sophomore has not played since the Texas Tech game due toinjury.Martinez holds two of Nevada’s single-game bests with nine

The list of defensive linemen who are playing better footballthan Brett Roy right now is likely pretty short.Roy was snubbed for All-WAC honors after a breakout season in2010 in which he recorded 14.5 TFLs and 8.0 sacks from histackle position. Now, even without standout ends Dontay Moch(third-round pick of the Bengals) and Ryan Coulson (Patriotssignee) departed for the NFL, Roy has taken his game to anotherlevel this year.Through 10 games this season, Roy has already surpassed hissack and TFL totals from last season. He enters this week’s gamewith 10.0 sacks (leads WAC and fourth in the nation) and 17.5

tackles for loss (leads WAC and fourth in the nation). He was named to a pair of midseason All-America team this year– third team by Phil Steele Publications and second team bySports Illustrated.A former walk-on linebacker, Roy has matured into one of thetop tackles on the West Coast. For his career (and nearly all of hisstatistics have come from the start of the 2010 season), Royranks ninth all-time in career TFLs with 33.0 and he is fifth in ca-reer sacks with 17.0.He is moving up the Nevada’s single-season charts in both sacksand tackles for loss this year:

extra points against Idaho in 2010, which is tied for second, and eight againstUtah State, which is tied for 10th.

SPECIAL TEAMS GIVETH AND THEY TAKETH AWAYNevada’s special teams have had some up and down moments in 2011 but theycame up big in the 45-38 win over Fresno State.Senior Rishard Matthews gave Nevada a special teams boost in the first quarter asthe punt returner put Nevada’s first touchdown on the board with an 86-yard re-turn for a score. It was the second punt return TD of his career and Nevada’s firstsince Matthews took one back against Boston College in the Kraft Fight HungerBowl Game. It the first punt return in a regular season game since MarlonMcLaughlin took one back against Louisiana Tech in 2001. At 86 yards, it ranks asthe fourth-longest punt return in the country this season.Another special teams standout of the day was senior Bubba Boudreaux, who re-covered a Fresno State fumbled punt in the end zone for Nevada’s second specialteams score of the game. It was the second straight game that Boudreaux made abig special teams play as he blocked a punt last week against New Mexico.Kicker Allen Hardison connected on three field goals for the Pack for the secondtime in his brief career. He hit a pair of three-pointers from 22 yards out in the firstquarterback before connecting from 48 yards just before halftime. That markedNevada’s longest field goal since Brett Jaekle hit from 50 yards against UNLV inSeptember of 2007.Fast-forward to the Hawaii game on Nov. 12 and Nevada had a number of specialteams miscues. Late in the second quarter, Nevada had a punt blocked by Hawaii, which recovered in the end zone for a touchdown that briefly tied the game at 14.Kendall Brock then fumbled the opening kickoff in the second half, giving Hawaiithe ball inside the Pack 20-yard line. Punter Jake Hurst also had a below averagegame besides the block with five punts for just a 34.6-yard average, though hedid place two inside the 20-yard line.

HELLO, MY NAME IS … KENDALL BROCKIn game five of the season (against UNLV), Nevada pulled the redshirt of highlytouted true freshman Kendall Brock, a running back/wide receiver/kick returnerfrom Fresno, Calif.Brock’s debut came on the first play of the game as he lifted a struggling kick re-turn unit with a 35-yard return on his first touch. But, thanks to a defense thatpitched a shutout, it was the only time Brock and the kick-return unit saw the fieldagainst the Rebels, though Brock did play on other specials teams units in thegame. Against New Mexico, Brock’s role expanded a bit as the freshman had fivecarries for 70 yards, caught two passes for 17 yards and returned a kickoff for 31yards. Brock returned six kicks for 123 yards against Fresno State and also had onecarry for six yards.Brock has not played in enough games to make the national or conference rank-ings. If he did, he would rank fifth in the WAC and 67th in the nation.

HURST EXCELLINGAfter three years of waiting in the wings behind Brad Langley, senior punter JakeHurst has made the most of his opportunity this year. Hurst is fifth in the WAC and41st nationally with an average of 41.9 yards per punt. He was rewarded for his ef-forts earlier this year with a WAC Special Teams Player of the Week award after thewin over San Jose State.

LONG STRANGE TRIPOn Oct. 18, 2008, Corbin Louks scored a pair of touchdowns -- both rushing TDs --in a game against Colorado State. On Oct. 8 of this year, Louks saw the end zoneagain, this time on a 34-yard reception. The difference between the scores is thelatter came as a Nevada wide receiver and the former was as a quarterback at theUniversity of Utah. What happened in between is an unusual tale.Louks lost his starting job at Utah prior to the 2009 season and sought a transferto Nevada, which had also recruited him out of high school. He came to Nevadaand sat out the season as a transfer. He started the first game of the 2010 seasonas a starting safety, but suffered a knee injury in the game and lost his starting job.He returned to play on special teams during the year and was converted to a widereceiver prior to the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl. He’s been in the receiving corps in

all of 2011 and then snagged that elusive touchdown grab in the Battle for theFremont Cannon.

LINEBACKER TANDEMSenior linebackers James-Michael Johnson and Brandon M. Marshall are two ofthe most experienced players on the team as the duo combines for 91 careergames played and 77 starts. They are Nevada’s active leaders in tackles (chart, page 7). You can also find each senior’s name in the Nevada record books. John-son is sixth all-time in career tackles for loss with 36.5 while Marshall is on hisheels with 33.5. Both are among the active leaders in the NCAA in that category. This week, Johnson ranks 12th while Marshall is 20th.

SPREADING THE WEALTHNo matter the quarterback, Nevada has been able to spread the ball all around toa number of different wide receivers, tight ends and running backs this year. En-tering this week, Nevada has 13 different players who have caught at least onepass this season. That breaks down to five wide receivers, five running backs andthree tight ends. Nevada is one of 21 schools in the country to have at least fiveplayers with an average of 10.5 yards per catch (minimum of five catches).

FAJARDO SEIZES QUARTERBACK JOBNevada clearly had big shoes to fill this year in replacing quarterback ColinKaepernick, perhaps the greatest player in school history.Senior Tyler Lantrip started the first four games for Nevada and had some highmoments, especially his 366-yard effort off the bench in a win against UNLV.But redshirt freshman Cody Fajardo has seized the starting job for Nevada with hisabilities in the Pistol offense. Fajardo had a breakout game against Texas Tech, running for 139 yards and two scores while throwing for another, but he missedthe Boise State game due to injury. He got his first collegiate start against UNLV on Oct. 8 and had some ups anddowns in the 37-0 win. Against New Mexico the following week, Fajardo settled in.He ran for 86 yards and two scores and complete 20-fo-25 for 203 yards againstthe Lobos.Fajardo was tremendous in his first WAC start as he led Nevada to a 45-38 win overFresno State. He threw for a career-high 313 yards and a touchdown on 19-of-27passing and also rushed for 61 yards and two more scores. After that game, Fajardo (and Coach Ault) credited Lantrip for his performance onthe sideline in helping Fajardo read the defense and function within the offense.Fajardo got his first road win, his fourth win as a starter (in four starts) and his firstWAC Offensive Player of the Week award all in one fell swoop with his perform-ance against New Mexico State. Fajardo accounted for 343 yards and four touch-downs (all rushing) in the win over the Aggies. He extended that streak to five wins in five starts with another WAC POW awardfollowing Nevada’s win at Hawaii, in which he accounted for 371 yards of total of-fense and four touchdowns in the win.

LIGHTING THE LAMPIt was a long wait, but senior running back Lampford Mark finally saw some play-ing time during the Wolf Pack’s win over UNLV. Mark suffered a torn anterior cruci-ate ligament in practice in November of 2010 and missed the final three games ofthe season and all of spring drills. He then missed the first four games of 2011 dueto illness. But Mark has come on as of late and could be the featured back in the Pistol of-fense the rest of the way.Against the Rebels, Mark carried the ball 15 times for 75 yards and a touchdown. The 4-yard TD run was the first score for Mark since Nov. 20 of last year againstNew Mexico State. With the 75 yards, Mark went over the 1,000-yard mark for hiscareer at Nevada.Against New Mexico, Mark found even more success as he ran for 39 yards on ninecarries with three touchdowns. The TDs marked his first multi-touchdown game ofhis career and were the most rushing scores in a game by a Nevada player sinceColin Kaepernick had three at Louisiana Tech last season.Mark came through again at New Mexico State, entering the game in the secondhalf and ran for 185 yards and a touchdown on just eight carries. He broke an 80-

ROAD WARRIORSThe schedule was not kind to the Nevada football team to openthis year. The Wolf Pack opened with four games on the road andtwo were against teams who opened the season ranked in theTop 5 (Oregon and Boise State) while the other two are against aBCS foe (at Texas Tech) and a conference game (at San JoseState), respectively. The Wolf Pack was the second-to-last FBS team in the nation toplay a home game when the team finally opened at Mackay Sta-dium on Oct. 8 against in-state rival UNLV. But the flip side of theschedule is this: Nevada will only leave Reno once following Nov.1 (Nov. 26 at Utah State).

SHUTOUTThe Nevada defense tossed a shutout at UNLV with the 37-0 vic-tory. It was notable because it marked the first-ever shutout inthe 37-game rivalry series. It was also Nevada’s first shutout since2006, when the Wolf Pack blanked Louisiana Tech 42-0 on Nov.18 that year. It was Nevada’s first shutout at Mackay Stadiumsince Nov. 11, 2006, when the Wolf Pack shutdown Utah State tothe tune of 42-0.Nevada’s shutout against UNLV did not come easy, however. Infact it was more impressive considering UNLV twice had the ballin the red zone and the Rebels’ average starting field positionwas its own 40-yard line.Senior cornerback Isaiah Frey stopped one Rebel drive in the redzone when he made a brilliant interception in the end zone thatwas intended for UNLV’s top offensive player in wideout PhilipPayne (who was held without a catch in the game). The other redzone drive ended on downs when Brett Roy (of course) made atackle for a loss on a fourth-and-short play.

WAC PLAYERS OF THE WEEKSo far in 2011, Nevada has won seven player of the week honorsfrom the Western Athletic Conference. Since Nevada joined theWAC in 2000, Wolf Pack players have been honored by theleague 58 times in the weekly awards. The list this year:Nov. 14: Cody Fajardo, Offense. Fajardo accounted for 371 yardsof total offense and four touchdowns in a win over Hawaii.Oct. 31: Cody Fajardo, Offense. Fajardo passed for 283 yardswhile rushing for 60 yards and four touchdowns in a win overNew Mexico State.Oct. 24: Mike Ball, Offense. Ball had 216 all-purpose yards – in-cluding a career-high 198 rushing – and two touchdowns in awin over Fresno State.Oct. 17: Khalid Wooten, Defense. Wooten recorded six tackles, forced two fumbles and picked off a pass in Nevada’s 49-7 winover New Mexico. Oct. 10: Brett Roy, Defense. Roy set a career-high with 11 tack-les, including four for a loss (one sack) of 13 yards, in Nevada’s37-0 win over UNLV.Sept. 19: Mike Ball, Offense; Jake Hurst, Special Teams. Ballrushed for 124 yards and two touchdowns in Nevada’s 17-14 winat San Jose State. Hurst punted six times for 259 yards (43.2-yardaverage). He had a long of 49 yards and placed two inside the20-yard line, including one at the Spartan 3-yard line for the Wolf

Pack.

Hawaii isconsidered the preseason favorite to win the league, accordingto both polls. Both polls have predicted the exact order of finish: 1. Hawaii; 2.Fresno State; 3. Nevada; 4. Louisiana Tech; 5. Utah State; 6; Idaho;7. San Jose State; 8. New Mexico State.
