Background Info of the Disease

Background Info of the Disease

Genetic disorder of the nervous system

Results in tumor growth

Three types (NF1, NF2,, and Schwannomatosis)

Existing Treatment and Research

Existing Treatment and Research

No existing treatment to physically stop it

Prenatal testing and tumor removal

Research done by Children’s Tumor Foundation

Genetic Origin of Disease

Genetic Origin of DiseaseLocated on NF 1 gene of Chromosome

17

Mutations are common on this gene

Two major proteins: Neurofibromin and Ras

Mutation leads to uncontrolled cell division

How A Mutated Cell Functions

How A Mutated Cell FunctionsShape of Neurofibromin will become

altered

Unable to bind with Ras

Cell division unregulated and uncontrolled

Tumor growth

Proposed DesignProposed DesignStep by Step:

1.) Injection of bacteria containing mitochondria into bloodstream and travel to NF1 gene

2.) Bacteria will bind to NF protein and combine the mitochondria with the protein

3.) Bacteria will alter protein shape and mitochondria will retain shape

Page 9: Neurofibromatosis 1 Design Project

Expected ResultsExpected ResultsNF protein is vulnerable due to location

Mutation’s intentions would become useless because NF protein shape would be restored

Inhibit tumor growth

Comparison to Other Treatments

Comparison to Other Treatments

Prenatal testing is unreliable in spotting mutations

Tumor removal is ineffective because tumors can grow back

**Bacteria insertion is promising because it solves the problem at the root**
