Leoš JANÁČEK (1854-1928)Taras BulbaLachian Dances • Moravian DancesWarsaw Philharmonic Orchestra Antoni Wit

Leoš Janáček was an authority on his native folk-music, and the Lachian and Moravian Dances preserve and celebrate culture andtraditions which were vanishing

even in his own lifetime. Based on Gogol’s historical novel, Janáček’s inspired orchestral rhapsody on Taras Bulba depicts three moving and dramatic episodes in the violent life of the Cossack leader, climaxing in his stirring and triumphant prophecy of liberation. This release follows hot on the heels of Antoni Wit’s acclaimed Warsaw recording of Janáček’s Glagolitic Mass and Sinfonietta (8.572639). (8.572639 and Blu-ray Audio NBD0026), which was described as “gripping from start to finish” by Gramophone and “a major release – a mandatory purchase” in a 10/10 review from ClassicsToday.com. With its mixture of the powerfully emotive Taras Bulba and more pastoral Dances, and the Warsaw Philharmonic’s proven track record in Janáček’s remarkable scores, this release will generate its own substantial following.

Olivier MESSIAEN (1908-1992) Visions de l’AmenClaude DEBUSSY (1862-1918) En blanc et noirRalph van Raat (piano I) Håkon Austbø (piano II)

Both works on this recording were written during wartime. Debussy’s

1915 En blanc et noir, composed during a late creative burst, is his musical response to the horrors of World War I. Messiaen’s revolutionary Visions de l’Amen from 1943, written to be performed by the composer and his teenage pupil, Yvonne Loriod, is a profound religious meditation whose emotional intensity is overwhelming. The role of the two pianos is clearly divided. Melodic and expressive elements are confined to the second piano, Messiaen’s part, whereas all that is percussion, brilliance and rhythmic development is heard in the first piano, Loriod’s part.

Dutch pianist and musicologist Ralph van Raat has won, among otherawards, Second Prize and Donemus-Prize (for Contemporary Music)of the Princess Christina Competition (1995); Stipend-Prize Darmstadt during the Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik in Darmstadt (1998); and First Prize of the International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition (1999). Of Norwegian origin, Håkon Austbø was the first non-French artist to win the Concours National de la Guilde Française des Artistes Solistes in Paris (1970), and in 1971 he gained international attention when a unanimous jury awarded him the first prize of the Olivier Messiaen Competition for Contemporary Music in Royan, France. 8.572472

Igor STRAVINSKY (1882-1971)Violin and Piano WorksSuite italienne • Divertimento • Duo ConcertantCarolyn Huebl (violin) Mark Wait (piano)

Stravinsky’s music for violin and piano was written for his duo with violinist Samuel Dushkin. Both the Suite italienne and Divertimento are arrangements of ballet scores,

each work in turn an alchemic transformation of Baroque and Romantic styles into Stravinsky’s distinctive idiom. The enigmatic but unwaveringly expressive Duo Concertant was Stravinsky’s only original work in this form. Huebl and Wait were acclaimed for their recording of Schnittke’s complete Sonatas (8.570978). Mark Wait received two GRAMMY® nominations for his disc of Elliott Carter’s Piano Concerto (8.559151).

Ernest BLOCH (1880-1959)America: An Epic Rhapsody Concerto Grosso No 1Patricia Michaelian (piano)Seattle Symphony ChoraleSeattle Symphony Gerard Schwarz

Swiss-born Bloch, a pupil of Eugène Ysaÿe, emigrated to the United States in 1916. Written in 1926, two years after Bloch had

become an American citizen, America: An Epic Rhapsody, is the composer’s tribute to his adopted country. This romantic and patriotic score vividly surveys the history of the US from the native American melodies of pre-colonial days to the modern era of 1920s jazz and beyond. The Concerto Grosso No 1 is a bold statement which unites the eighteenth century concerto grosso form with a modern tonal language. 8.572743

Tony BANKS (b 1950)SIX Pieces for OrchestraCharlie Siem (violin)Martin Robertson (alto saxophone)The City of Prague Philharmonic OrchestraPaul Englishby

Tony Banks, founder member of rock band Genesis, has already written a much admired orchestral work called Seven (8.557466), in

which he was praised for his ‘genuine melodic gift’ (Gramophone). His new work consists of six evocative songs without words which may arouse in the listener ideas of seduction, journeys, heroes, quests, decisions and goals. Two of the pieces feature solo instruments – alto saxophone on Siren and violin on Blade – played here by elite soloists, which mesh into Banks’s orchestral tapestry with bewitching effect. The remaining pieces reveal his outstanding lyrical gifts and total command of musical narrative.

Tony Banks has a big following for his solo work outside the group. His classical compositions have been admired for their lyricism and melodic qualities, with some critics noting an affinity with the string works of Vaughan Williams.

It Don’t Mean A Thing String FeverMarin Alsop (leader)

Described as a ‘conductor who makes a difference’ (Daily Telegraph), and acclaimed for her artistic vision and commitment to accessibility in classical music, Marin Alsop founded String Fever in 1981. Its pioneering blend of jazz, pop and classical repertoire took

critics and audiences by storm, breaking the boundaries between musical genres through remarkable versatility and a palpable sense of fun. This album reflects String Fever’s forays into standards ranging from Rogers and Hart’s early hit Manhattan to Dave Brubeck’s famously rhythmic Blue Rondo à la Turk.

By no means all of Marin Alsop’s myriad fans will know that she performed widely as a violinist before becoming internationally renowned as a conductor, and fewer still will have had access to these recordings made by her pioneering ensemble String Fever over a remarkable 15 year period. These arrangements have more than stood the test of time; serving as a vibrant reminder of where such cross-over programming found its roots and making for a release which will be snapped up by a wide cross-section of the market.

Much in demand by many top solo artists from Billy Joel to the late Sir Yehudi Menuhin, String Fever is featured on two of Billy Joel’s albums, Nylon Curtain and Innocent Man. String Fever has collaborated with vocalist Mel Tormé, top dance great Honi Coles, and appeared as featured soloists with the Colorado SymphonyOrchestra and the Eugene Symphony Orchestra. 8.572834

Nicola VACCAJ (1790-1848)La sposa di MessinaJessica Pratt • Filippo Adami • Armando Ariostini • Wakako Ono •Maurizio Lo Piccolo • Classica Chamber Choir (Brno) • Virtuosi Brunensis • Antonino Fogliani

World Première Recordings

The operas of Nicola Vaccaj, renowned as a vocal teacher and still known today for his Metodo di

Canto, employ a similar bel canto style to that of his rival Bellini.Based on a tragedy by Friedrich Schiller, the powerfully dramatic plot of La sposa di Messina deals with the inescapable and, in this case, destructive nature of destiny. Vaccaj’s own 1839 première was dogged by bad luck, and the subject proved too controversial for Venetian audiences despite its numerous superb set pieces. Afterone complete and one partial performance, it was not staged again until the 2009 revival heard on this live recording.

A composer of fifteen operas, Nicola Vaccaj is now virtually forgotten as a composer though La sposa di Messina could have been “from the pen of the young Verdi or Donizetti” according to the Belgian Opera Gazet review of this festival concert performance. This unique revival and première recording has a very strong cast and the performance is in the trusted hands of opera specialist Antonino Fogliani, whose Rossini (Mose in Egitto 8.660220-21 and Otello 8.660275-76) and Donizetti (Lucia di Lammermoor 8.660255-56) are among the evergreen staples of our opera catalogue.

Laureate SeriesRafael Aguirre Guitar RecitalRafael Aguirre – 2010 Winner, ‘Alhambra’ International Guitar Competition

Rafael Aguirre is acknowledged as one of today’s most celebrated virtuoso guitarists, having won first prize at 13 of the world’s most prestigious international

competitions: a record-breaking achievement for a Spanish musician. Following on from his previous, acclaimed recording (8.572064), this fullblooded recital is of music by Spanish composers or those influenced by Iberia, from the pure flamenco of Paco de Lucía’s Guajiras to Debussy’s impressionistic Soirée dans Grenade, and from Albéniz’s Triana, named after the gypsy quarter in Seville, to the virtuoso fireworks of Tárrega’s Gran Jota.

Mieczysław WEINBERG (1919-1996)Symphony No 6, Op 79Rhapsody on Moldavian Themes, Op 47, No 1Glinka Choral College Boys’ ChoirSt Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra • Vladimir Lande

Weinberg is increasingly recognised as one of the outstanding composers of the second half of the

twentieth century. His Rhapsody on Moldavian Themes is a concise medley of tunes that embrace folk influence, both melancholic and high spirited, culminating in a joyous and unstoppable dance. Scored for a very large orchestra and a children’s choir, Symphony No. 6 is a work of huge expression, anguished and dynamic, encompassing lament, circus gallops, burlesque, and a cataclysmic and heartrending slow movement. Weinberg’s friend, Shostakovich, was so impressed that he used it as teaching material in his own classes.

Weinberg’s music is receiving widespread attention and recording. It shares some similarity with the music of Shostakovich and thoseinterested in, or curious about, Polish and Russian music of the time will find this release of particular interest. As will those who wish to follow the path of Soviet symphonism in the twentieth century.

World Première Recordings

Ronn Yedidia’s music has been acclaimed for its vitality, variety and imagination, and his compositions for clarinet are especially touching and intimate. Impromptu, Nocturne and World Dance was written for the birth of friends’ newborn twins and is full of expressive breadth, lovely textures and a heady use of ethnic source material. Farewell, Nathaniel offers a more sombre and reflective experience in music of great depth and loss. Poème is both romantic and impressionistic, whilst the Concertino is a feast of colour and vivid dance energy.

Mauricio KAGEL (1931-2008)Works for FluteDas Konzert • Phantasiestück (version for flute and piano)Pan • Phantasiestück (version for flute, piano and ensemble)Michael Faust (flute) • Sinfonia Finlandia Jyväskylä • Patrick Gallois •Paulo Álvares (piano) • Ensemble Contrasts • Robert HP Platz

Arriving in Europe from Buenos Aires in 1957, Mauricio Kagel soon developed his own subversive and theatrical musical aesthetics. Performed here by the work’s dedicatee, Das Konzert is his typically oblique response to writing a flute concerto, ranging from spectral atmospheres to hectic confrontation. The humor of Pan is clear from the outset, with its invocation and parody of Mozart’s Papageno. The two contrasting versions of Phantasiestück show the composer’s trademark wit at its keenest. The title refers to the influence of Schumann on Kagel. 8.572635

Robert FUCHS (1847-1927)SerenadesNo 3, Op 21 • No 4, Op 51 • No 5, Op 53Cologne Chamber Orchestra • Christian Ludwig

‘A richly endowed composer, selfless teacher, and a rare human being’ proclaims Robert Fuchs’ memorial stone, and this esteemis reflected in his astonishing roster

of pupils – Mahler, Sibelius, Wolf and Korngold among them. His own compositions, though, have been overlooked, unaccountably so on the evidence of these lovely Serenades. The Third is quite Brahmsian with a wonderfully bracing Hungarian finale. No. 4 is a highly expressive and richly scored work, whilst No. 5 casts its net yet wider – with anticipations of Mahler, and joyous references to the Vienna of the Strauss family. Serenades Nos. 1 and 2 are available on Naxos 8.572222.

Music for Mandolin and GuitarDuo Ahlert & Schwab

World Première Recordings

Many of the works on this recording were written for award-winning Duo Ahlert & Schwab, who have contributed greatly to making contemporary music from the United States a significant part of

mandolin and guitar repertoire. The mellow tones and chiming sparkle associated with these instruments is represented in a wide diversity of pieces whose styles and influences include fragments of classical forms in Mark Delpriora’s Sonata, references to the mysteries of nature in Daimonelix, named after spiralling rock formations found in Nebraska, electronic music, rock music and Middle Eastern music in Indigo Trails, and chaos theory in Strange Attractor. With this new all-American program they bring to Naxos their successful themed recital format demonstrated by releases on the Antes-Edition label, taking the opportunity to represent the high quality and diversity of new American works written for them in recent years.

In January 1956 Norwegian Radio broadcast an almost complete performance of Götterdämmerung starring Kirsten Flagstad and Set Svanholm, and conducted by Øivin Fjeldstad. Despite opportunities to re-record the work in Vienna, Flagstad was insistent that this performance be released. Most of the missing sections were then recorded, and the resultant LP was the first (almost complete) commercial recording of the work on disc. Flagstad, the great Wagnerian, is in resplendent voice and Svanholm proves a worthy partner. This elusive set remains a milestone in Wagner performance.

Johann STRAUSS I (1804-1849)Edition • Vol 21Slovak Sinfonietta Žilina • Christian Pollack

Memorials, Name Days, and aristocratic connections were just some of the many incentives for Johann Strauss the Elder to pour forth his unrivalled series of waltzes, quadrilles and polkas for his ravenous Viennese public. During 1846-47 such opportunities included a work to honour the celebrated singer Jenny Lind (Swedish Songs), whilst New Year provided a supreme example of his festive skill. Nor did he ignore the professions: lawyers and doctors received dedicatory waltzes, and so did a couple of much beloved comic book characters.

This release forms part of the only complete Strauss the Elder collection in the catalogue. The 1846-47 waltzes are every bit as good as some better known ones and Strauss’ inspiration remains at peak level throughout.

Judith Lang ZAIMONT (b 1945)Sonata • A Calendar Set – 12 Virtuosic PreludesNocturne: La fin de siècleChristopher Atzinger (piano)

Judith Lang Zaimont’s acclaimed music embraces a wide variety of forms. One of her earliest works is Nocturne: La fin de siècle, written as a ‘personal valentine to the great

pianist-composers of the Romantic Era’. Rich in contrast, perfect in form, it provides a deeply enriching listening experience. A Calendar Set (1978) charts the months of the year with imagination and precision, whilst the introduction of carols and familiar songs adds to the setting’s lyricism. Sonata was completed in 2000 and is one of her most challenging works – atmospheric, quite impressionistic in places, and ending with a brilliantly virtuosic finale.

Nicolas FLAGELLO (1884-1945)Passion of Martin Luther King (original version)L’Infinito • The LandEzio Flagello, bass-baritone • Ambrosian Singers • London Philharmonic Orchestra • I Musici di Firenze • Nicolas Flagello1962 and 1969 Recordings

The Flagello brothers combined their remarkable musical talents to create the unique artistic synergy of these recordings. Ezio’s career flourished at the Metropolitan Opera and abroad, and composer Nicolas made good use of his rich bass-baritone voice in luxuriant settings of Tennyson’s verses in The Land, here partnered with Leopardi’s L’Infinito, a gloomy expression of humility and awe in the face of the Infinite. The texts used in the Passion of Martin Luther King emphasize faith, endurance and brotherly love, and this previously unissued première recording restores the moving original version of the work, with Dr King’s “Dream” re-asserted through Ezio Flagello’s towering performance as soloist. 8.112065

Stephen ALBERT (1941-1992)In Concordiam • TreeStoneIlkka Talvi, violin • Lucy Shelton, soprano • David Gordon, tenorSeattle Symphony • New York Chamber Symphony • Gerard Schwarz

Stephen Albert is counted as one of the most accomplished pioneers of ‘The New Romanticism’: a generation of composers seeking to reclaim some of the emotional expression lost through the rigors of intellectual Modernism in music. Inspired by James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake, TreeStone is a moving exploration of the tragic legend of Tristan and Iseult. In Concordiam reveals the range and complexity of Albert’s style in uniting angular dissonance with mellifluous harmonies. Albert worked closely with the Seattle Symphony on this work, revising it during his three year tenure as Composer in Residence. Albert’s Symphony No. 1 ‘RiverRun’ is available on Naxos 8.559257.

ICTHE RIASBACH CANTATAS PROJECTRIAS-Kammerorchester • RIAS-Kammerchor • RIAS-Knabenchor • Karl Ristenpart (conductor)

This 9-CD boxed set of first releases from the RIAS archives presents the first ever attempt at a recording of the complete Bach cantatas.

For everyone who is interested in the history of Bach interpretation and in the development of Germany’s post-1945 cultural rebuilding, these recordings represent a significant enrichment. From 1946, Karl Ristenpart established choral and orchestral ensembles at the RIAS Berlin, directing the RIAS-Kammerchor and the RIAS-Kammerorchester. With these ensembles, and emerging young singers (including Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Helmut Krebs and Agnes Giebel), Karl Ristenpart and Elsa Schiller, then head of music at the RIAS, embarked in 1947 upon a recording series of the complete Bach cantatas. However, it proved impossible to realise the project in its entirety. The twenty-nine cantatas which survive in the RIAS archives document a Bach ideal which is pioneering even by today’s standards: thanks to small-scale forces the musical structures are distinct and transparent, and the singers link their articulation to that of the instrumentalists. This interpretation, which is free of any monumentalism, paved the way, aesthetically, for historically informed performance practice.

GÜNTHER HERBIG80th Anniversary Edition Ludwig van BEETHOVENPrometheus · RitterballettStaatskapelle Berlin

November 30 is the 80th birthday of the conductor Günther Herbig, ample reason for the Berlin Classics label to offer him its congratulations with a new Beethoven compilation. We should also like to draw

attention to some of his most important recordings.

Günther Herbig learnt his trade with Hermann Abendroth in Weimar, continuing his studies with Hermann Scherchen and Herbert von Karajan. He was appointed Principal Conductor of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra in 1977, but found himself obliged to resign his post in the autumn of 1983 as the result of a dispute over arts policy. He had already toured England, Japan, Mexico and Spain, and in 1984 he emigrated to the USA, where he spent ten years as principal conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Toronto Symphony. From 2008 to 2010, he was principal conductor and musical advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan, which named him its honorary conductor this year. 0300307BC

Ludwig Güttler Brass EnsembleFamous Music for Brass

A whole world of sounding brassMusic for brass instruments continues to be very popular — no wonder, when the full and strident tones of brass, coupled with all their subtle shadings, represent a whole world of music in themselves. The repertoire embraces compositions written

specially for this family of instruments and conceived for their particular sound while also including the ever-popular arrangements of various musical highlights. This new compilation from the wealth of recordings made by the Ludwig Güttler Brass Ensemble takes account of this with a selection ranging from Gabrieli to Handel, whose Music for the Royal Fireworks is as attractive as an English Suite by Bach and as compelling as the Canzonas of Gabrieli or choral pieces by Schütz. Ludwig Van BEETHOVENTriple ConcertoPiano Concerto No. 3Mari Kodama (piano) • Kolja Blacher (violin) • Johannes Moser (violoncello) • Deutsches Symphony-Orchester Berlin • Kent Nagano

Strong line-up for a Beethoven rich in contrastsFollowing her much-talked-about sonata cycle, Mari Kodama recorded

the first two piano concertos of Ludwig van Beethoven with her husband Kent Nagano and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin — and critics and connoisseurs were once again impressed by this unaccustomed synthesis of precision and elegance. The next chapter in this unfolding story can be heard on the latest release on the Berlin Classics label. It begins with the joyful Triple Concerto in C major, in which the pianist and her solo partners Kolja Blacher and Johannes Moser display their concerted talents in a lively conversation that also makes room for heartfelt trio intimacy. All have their say — and each of them has something to say in this concerto, too, which makes one wonder why this work is such a Cinderella in the concert repertoire.

Wanderer – Fantasie Franz SCHUBERTMatthias Kirschnereit

Franz Schubert transformed wandering into music like no other composer. The many songs thattell tales of wandering, sometimes jauntily, sometimes in contemplative mood or even in a resigned, aimless manner, all demonstrate audibly how these experiences become

musical content. Liberated in this way, this image of someone setting out runs throughout Schubert’s instrumental music, and is audible even in compositions without a clearly identified title such as the “Wanderer Fantasy”.

What is of paramount importance to the artist is to breath life into the most diverse emotions through music without any pretence – transparent, yet never dry. Matthias Kirschnereit displays a highly developed sense of the nuances, as well as of the rough contrasts, required to follow in Schubert’s footsteps.

From the memory of childhood to death, from Tchaikovsky to Shostakovich, Russian music has often sung elegies. With Glazunov and Tchaikovsky, they are recollections of childhood, nostalgia for another world. While Rachmaninoff evokes purity in his Vocalise, Shostakovich intones a swansong, a song of death. In the warm timbre of Gérard Caussé’s viola and the generous sonority of Brigitte Engerer’s piano, all the melancholy and tenderness of Russia finds eloquent expression.

TrondheimSolistene - SOUVENIR

“Through its dynamic co-operation TrondheimSolistene (the Trondheim Soloists) and 2L has always sort to stretch the boundaries of what is possible to convey to the listener, aiming for the ultimate recorded listening experience. With the Serenade the team has taken things one step further with the TrondheimSolistene truly justifying their name. By placing each individual next to someone from a different voice rather than sitting in conventional sections we are working at the very outer limits of what is possible and creating chamber music at the highest level” - Øyvind Gimse, 2012.

We allocated two weeks in 2011 to record this new album. Artistic director Øyvind Gimse and his associate Geir Inge Lotsberg initially chose two pieces that represent, in their estimation, “the most beautiful music ever composer for the string orchestra”: Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence and his Serenade for Strings. Aiming for a 90 minutes program left 30 more minutes to record. So the orchestra and 2L logged on to Facebook and asked the listeners

worldwide what they’d like to hear. And the audience responded: Nielsen’s Suite Opus 1. A little gem that would exploit the Trondheim Soloists’ singular way with Nordic repertoire. 2L090A-LP

The purest version of these seven sermons, here played on only the sixteen strings of a quartet without the easysolutions of a large string orchestra (the original version) or the monumentality of an oratorio, not to mention thekeyboard reduction authorised by Haydn. The Prazaks have been meditating on this series of seven adagios for forty years and offer the rare union of a narrative with innate dramaturgy, avoiding both the austere linearity of

the current Baroque vogue and the sentimental excess of an outmoded Romantic style. Poets in their spiritual and musical prime, they invite you to share their asceticism.

Between September 1949 (Tchaikovsky’s Fifth) and November

1961 (Hary Janos), Deutsche Grammophon made 180 recordings with Fricsay conducting the Berlin Philharmonic, the RIAS orchestra, and that of the Bavarian Radio. We must add to this list a great number of public and other recordings, made by RIAS Berlin (today DeutschlandRadio). After Fricsay’s premature death in 1963, DGG released three important editions: a) in 1977 appeared a big LP collection with silver jackets, including several first-time issues; b) in 1994 a first 10-CD set was released called “Fricsay: A Portrait”; c) and in 2003, a second 9-CD set appeared called “A Life in Music.” Finally, a few years ago, the German label Audite released an important Fricsay edition. At the same time, several labels like Walhall or Relief issued more or less legally a certain number of sound archives, mainly operas. In Fricsay’s discography, Mozart and Bartok are the two most recorded composers; whereas, regrettably, there exist no recordings of any Mahler and/or Bruckner symphony (these were composers he conducted rarely if at all). Likewise, we have no violin concerto by Beethoven; and no piano concerto by Beethoven (except for his Third Concerto with Annie Fischer in Munich, in December 1957); no Mendelssohn symphony. TAH732.33

Frédéric CHOPIN & Robert SCHUMANNClara Haskil (piano)Rafael Kubelik (conductor)

In 1951, Clara Haskil signed an exclusive contract with Philips, which led to a series of recordings that only rarely satisfied her and which, according to those heard her on stage, only give a blurred image of her talent. Furthermore, this

contract prevented her from making studio recordings with some of her best-loved conductors like Giulini, Keilberth, or Kubelik. There are two exceptions: in 1956, Columbia convinced Philips to “lend” them Clara Haskil for two concertos with Geza Anda under Alceo Galliera and in 1957, with Ferenc Fricsay, thanks to an agreement between Philips and Deutsche Grammophon for the release of the Mozart 27th Concerto recorded in Munich. But despite Columbia’s magnificent propositions, Haskil remained faithful to Philips.

By chance, a number of live recordings have greatly increased Haskil’s studio discography. The two present concertos are live recordings: the Schumann Concerto, recorded in Copenhagen in February 1955, and the Chopin Concerto, recorded in Paris in January 1960 with the same conductor, Rafael Kubelik. And, as a special bonus we have included this Schumann, which is a first-time release. This concert was recorded in Copenhagen via the telephone but two minutes are lost (at the end of the second movement and beginning of the third). We filled this gap with the same passage taken from the concert with Kletzki of July 1953. TAH736

Myroslav SKORYKMusic for Violin and PianoSolomia Soroka (violin)Arthur Greene (piano)

The leading Ukrainian composer of today, Myroslav Skoryk (born in Lwów, now Lviv, in 1938) grew up in Siberia, where his family was deported after the Second World War, and he began to write music under the tutelage of other political prisoners there. He later studied with Kabalevsky in Moscow before settling back in his native city, where he soon became an important teacher and is now a major figure in Ukrainian cultural life. His music is direct and forthright, with echoes of Prokofiev: there are passages of driving energy and power and a keen sense of drama – and Skoryk, too, is not afraid of writing a glorious tune when he wants to.

J.S. BACH (1685-1750)Brandenburg ConcertosTafelmusik Baroque OrchestraJeanne Lamon (Music Director)

The Six Brandenburg Concertos by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) are considered by musicians, critics and audiences alike among the finest musical compositions of the baroque era. Bach presented

the concertos to the Margrave of Brandenburg, Christian Ludwig, in Berlin, March 24, 1721, with the hopes some patronage would come his way. The music was preserved in the Brandenburg archives, and when rediscovered in the 19th century became some of the most beloved music of all time. Beloved is the operative word in this re-release of the masterpieces in the hands of JEANNE LAMON and the TAFELMUSIK BAROQUE ORCHESTRA. Critic Teb Libbey wrote, “Lucid and refreshingly pure, like water drawn from a cool, clear stream, these accounts are notable for the consistently clean textures and solid bass lines, for the way melodic lines and voice leading are clearly delineated, and for the manner in which the solo instruments emerge from the tutti with just the right amount of presence. With excellent sound, these are well-nigh ideal realizations.”

The four concertos which comprise the composition follow the seasons of spring, summer, fall and winter, and by turn offer superbly varied textures that take the listener from the festive, sprightly air of spring, to the heat and thunderstorms of summer, to the icy sleet of winter. There are literally hundreds of recordings of this work, but this particular re-release with the TAFELMUSIK BAROQUE ORCHESTRA and JEANNE LAMON stands out as one of the best. Although first released in 1992, one need only check some of the current on-line comments (amazon.com) to find there are still passionate consumers declaring the performance as “enlightened,” “disciplined,” “elegant and dignified without being stuffy and stilted.” Or how about, “This is one of those done-to-death works that serious collectors must own.”

Shirley Brill a marvellous young clarinettist. She has won prizes at several international competitions,

and has performed worldwide with artists such as Daniel Barenboim, Emmanuel Pahud, Sabine Meyer, and the Borromeo and Jerusalem String Quartets. Her first recording for Aparté – also her first with an orchestra – presents a programme of fine but rarely recorded works, showing her desire to leave the beaten track. Its release in France is intended to coincide with the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Jean Françaix (1912-1997), a neo-Classical composer known in particular for his music written for the films of his close friend Sacha Guitry. A breath of fresh air!

“It has meant a great deal to the orchestra to have Tobias Broström as Composer-in-Residence. Getting to know a composer and evolving together, sharing every day work in

real time, allows the composer and the musicians to become closer to each other and to their common goal- artistic renewal in the here and now. We believe it helps to give both the music and the musician a face, and to give the listener a glimpse of the glow behind each composition. Through the acquisition of the entire catalogue by the KEPACH Music Group in 2008, this monographic collection was placed on the market with the aim to recount the most beautiful chapters of the Italian labels that revolutionised the history of jazz since their founding in 1975. Black Saint and Soul Note rose to the forefront thanks to their commitment to emerging artists of avant-garde jazz. Over the course of their 30-year history under the direction of Giovanni Bonandrini, the two labels accumulated a vast collection of historic recordings by musicians who defined an era. The catalogues include approximately 580 titles of exceptional and rare recordings performed by some of the most acclaimed, innovative jazz musicians from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, such as Andrew Hill, Cecil Taylor, Dave Douglas, Anthony Braxton and the World Saxophone Quartet. A common patrimony, universally recognised and affirmed by seven triumphs as Best Label proclaimed by the Down Beat poll, Black Saint and Soul Note boast masterpieces in their catalogues, such as “Parallel Worlds” (Dave Douglas; “Etudes” (Charlie Haden, Paul Motian); “For Olim” (Cecil Taylor); “To Them-To Us” (Jaki Byard); and “Eugene 1989” (Anthony Braxton).

A Musical Journey:GERMANY • Majestic MarchesA Musical Visit to Kulmbach and the Tin Soldier MuseumMusic by various composers

The Places • On a hill above the ancient town of Kulmbach stands the imposing12th century Hohenzollern fortress of Plassenburg. Among various collections on display is the remarkable Tin Soldier Museum, with various figures and dioramas that recreate battles and mirror the great castle itself, with a variety of

scenes from all periods of human history.

The March has an inevitable part to play in human history. Marco Polo remarked on the use of music by the armies of China to terrify the enemy before a battle. Military music, however, has a more precise purpose, whatever alarm it may strike into the hearts of those who hear it. Drums and trumpets may serve as useful signals, to advance or retreat, to eat or to sleep. The same instruments and their near relations may serve to keep an army moving together, and may serve to inspire feelings of bravery and patriotism. At the same time a march can provide a suitable accompaniment to an occasion of solemnity, a wedding, a funeral or a state ceremony. The music chosen for this tour offers a series of Marches by different composers, culminating in Mendelssohn’s Wedding March.

A Musical Journey: GERMANY • ITALYA Musical Visit to Bavarian Palaces and Italy’s Southern Tyrol Music by Richard Wagner

The Places • Ludwig II of Bavaria followed family precedent in undertaking an extravagant building programme during his relatively short reign from 1864 to 1886. The castles constructed on his orders included the romantic Neuschwanstein and the magnificent Schloss Linderhof, with its elaborate formal gardens, grottoes

and fountains. The tour ends with a brief glimpse of the mountainous Southern Tyrol in winter snow.

Richard Wagner’s innovative and immensely influential music dramas were largely based on older German legend, notably on the Nibelungenlied, the basis of his tetralogy The Ring. Ludwig II was fascinated by Wagner and by his operas, on subjects that had long been dear to him. These include the opera Lohengrin, which Ludwig first saw in 1861, the beginning of his preoccupation with Wagner, and the earlier opera Tannhäuser. The music chosen also includes an overture by Heinrich Marschner to an opera based on the old Bohemian legend of Hans Heiling, son of an Earth Spirit.
