The performers in this production are students in the SMTD. The designers are faculty in the Dept. of Theatre & Drama. Scenery, costumes, properties, sound, and lighting were realized by the students and staff of University Productions, the producing unit of the SMTD. Ticket sales assist in providing SMTD students with practical training experience before live audiences. Thank you for supporting our educational mission.

PROLOGUE: The Battlefield of Money & Art

The richest man in Vienna has commissioned a gifted young Composer to write a new opera, Ariadne auf Naxos, which will be presented this evening in honor of his newest art acquisition and for the entertainment of his guests. Preparations are under way as the opera singers discover to their consternation that a troupe of local hipster comedians is also scheduled to perform on the same program. How will the two shows possibly work together as one evening’s entertainment? Everyone’s confusion increases when they receive the news that since fireworks are set to go off at precisely nine o’clock that night, the two performances will have to take place simultaneously in order to save time. At first despairing of ever being able to present the opera as conceived, the Composer is eventually convinced by Zerbinetta, the free-thinking leader of the comedians, as the two of them collide and connect with each other. The Composer falls under her spell and, believing that music will always reign supreme, agrees to the proposed union of the two performances.

OPERA

As the opera begins, three nymphs—Najade, Dryade, and Echo—sing of the sorrow of Ariadne, who has been abandoned on the island of Naxos by Theseus. He brought her there after she helped him defeat the Minotaur at her father King Minos’s palace on Crete. Ariadne mourns her fate. Zerbinetta and her colleagues, notably Harlequin, try in vain to cheer Ariadne. Ariadne has loved one man and one man alone, now that he has abandoned her, she can hope only for death. Zerbinetta urges her to forget the ex and find another lover. She sings at length about her own experiences with men—she loves each one passionately then another always shows up, each seeming like a god at first blush. Ariadne remains steadfastly miserable until the nymphs announce the arrival of the youthful god Bacchus, wounded from his experience with the sorceress Circe. Both mistake the identity of the other — Bacchus believes Ariadne to be another enchantress while Ariadne persists in believing that he is the messenger of death, come to free her. He agrees that he will transform her, but through love, not death. In their final duet, both express wonder at the change occurring within them. Bacchus is amazed as he becomes the god he was destined to become and the lovers find themselves and their reality transformed. Zerbinetta points out that “a new god” has indeed come, just as she predicted. A wondrous transformation has occurred through the power of music.

riChard straUss (Composer; b. Munich, June 11, 1864; d. Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria, September 8, 1949) Son of Munich Opera’s principal hornist, he composed from age six and studied musical theory with F.W. Meyer in Munich. Having learned conducting under von Bülow, he held positions in Munich and Weimar, directed the Berlin Court Opera (1898-1910), and co-directed the Vienna State Opera (1919-1924). Originally influenced as a composer by Brahms,

he became a disciple of Liszt and Wagner, and in the 1890s his harmonically adventurous, orchestrally luxuriant symphonic poems attracted international attention. Early in the new century, he began to devote his energies principally to opera.

Strauss’ heavily Wagnerian first opera, Guntram (1894), failed drastically in Munich. He later responded with Feuersnot (1901), a thinly-disguised satire of the city’s conservatism. To Salome (1905) he brought a dazzling orchestral palette and volatile harmonic language, and followed this succèss de scandale with Elektra, an even more dissonant exploration of morbid psychology, after a play by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, who then became Strauss’ librettist and turned him into a more conservative direction. Der Rosenkavalier (1911), a warm comedy of 18th century Vienna, was composed as a sumptuous pastiche, including anachronistic waltz rhythms. More specifically neo-classical, Ariadne auf Naxos (1912) combined opera seria and commedia dell’arte, with a chamber orchestra in the pit. The remaining operas with Hofmannsthal were Die Frau ohne Schatten (1919), a fantasy-allegory on a Wagnerian scale; Die Ägyptische Helena (1928), a ponderous gloss on mythology; and Arabella (1933), a return to Viennese milieu. For the autobiographical Intermezzo (1924), Strauss wrote his own libretto. After Hofmannsthal’s death, the advent of the Nazis doomed a collaboration with the Jewish writer Stefan Zweig, begin in Die schweigsame Frau (1935); thereafter, Strauss tolerated Joseph Gregor’s platitudinous librettos for Friedenstag (1938), Daphne (1938), and Die Liebe der Danae (1944). Capriccio (1942), an opera about opera, marks the beginning of his Indian summer as a composer.

Strauss’ remarkable fluency and craftsmanship, evident in all his operas, occasionally led him into banality, even in Salome, Elektra, and Rosenkavalier; the later operas frequently descend to note-spinning, from which they are sometimes redeemed by the writing for soprano voice, inspired by Strauss’ wife, the singer Pauline de Ahna. His restlessness when lacking a libretto to set may account for his acceptance of Hofmannsthal’s symbolic density and Gregor’s turgidity; at least he seized whatever musico-theatrical opportunities their work offered him.

aboUt the librettist

hUgo von hofmannsthal (Librettist) was born February 1, 1874, in Vienna. As a sixteen-year-old Gymnasium student, Hofmannsthal began publishing poetry under the pseudonym “Loris.” These first poems as well as his first novel, Gestern (Yesterday), published also under a pseudonym, “Theophil Morren,” Hofmannsthal established his literary fame quite early. He was soon part of the literary youth of Vienna, the group of literati to which Arthur Schnitzler and Gerhard

Hauptmann belonged. Here in 1891, he met Stefan George, who significantly influenced his literary works in years following. His poetry and lyrical dramas are pervaded by a strong metaphoric of death and bring aesthetics to the last moment of human life, revealing Hofmannsthal as an important representative of Aestheticism. In 1892, he began studying law at the university in Vienna, though after his first round of exams and a voluntary, one-year term of military service, he switched to the study of Romantic literature. After receiving his doctorate in 1898, he wrote his post-doctoral work and turned it in to the university in Vienna in 1901. He then decided against academe for the life of a professional writer. Living in the nearby village of Rodaun as of 1901, Hofmannsthal increasingly dispaired of the sufficiency of language as an adequate means of communication. He therefore tried to overcome his lyricism in the following years. Inspired by the works of Friedrich Nietzsche and Sigmund Freud, his subsequent works were influenced by the traditions of Greek Antiquity and Western Christianity, including the drama Elektra (1903), based on the drama of the same name written by Sophocles. Richard Strauss set his drama to music in 1909 and used Hofmannsthal’s Der Rosenkavalier (1911) for the libretti of five more operas, including Ariadne auf Naxos (1912) and Josephslegende (1914). Hofmannsthal and Strauss, together with theater director Max Reinhardt, founded the Salzburger Festspiele in 1920. Hofmannsthal was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature three times, though he never won the prize. Hofmannsthal died on July 15, 1929, in Rodaun, Austria.

gary deCker (Scenic Designer) has designed more than 100 productions. In Michigan, he has worked at the Gem, Attic, Birmingham, Boarshead, and Purple Rose Theatres. Recent designs include the national tours of The Sunshine Boys and Same Time, Next Year. His scenic design for Fully Committed at The Century Theatre earned the Detroit Free Press 2002 Theatre Design Excellence Award. He has designed interiors or lighting for commercial projects including: The Elwood Grill in Detroit, The Fashion Cafe in New York, and The Arndale Centre in Manchester, UK. Theatre Department faculty member since 1984.

He is a currently a student of Kenneth Kiesler at the University of Michigan where he is enrolled as a doctoral candidate in the orchestral conducting program. In the summer months of 2011, he made his debut with the National Arts Center Orchestra in Ottawa, Canada. He is the music director of the Detroit Medical Orchestra.

In the event of fire or severe storm, you will be instructed by an announcement from the stage indicating the best method of exit. Please notice the multiple red exit signs in the theatre. For your safety, please exit in a calm and orderly manner.

No food or drink is allowed in the theatre.

Children

As a courtesy to our audience and the performers, children under the age of three will not be admitted to performances. All children must have a ticket. If your child proves disruptive or excessively restless, you may be asked to leave by House Management.

Since 1974, Friends of Opera members have supported the School of Music, Theatre & Dance’s distinguished opera program, allowing opera students at the University

of Michigan to experience the greatest opportunities for study and performance. Gifts to the Friends of Opera provide funding for a cash prize to the winner of its annual vocal competition, opera scores for student opera productions, and general support for the opera workshop program.
