Policeman-turned-firefighter, 'Just doing my job' at Oct. fire Panetta, Mello recognize heroism during carport fire

When NPS Federal Policeman Vance S. Bonds got involved with firefi ghting he took it all the way, including trading in his badge.

Bonds was patroling at La Mesa Village on Oct. 20 when he saw a carport fire. He radioed the fire in, then pulled two small children from the spreading flames. Waiting for fire engines to arrive, the 29-year-old policeman began fighting the fire with a garden hose. Flames were already licking at a suburban van parked in the

carport. In addition to saving two lives -

which stands on its own merit- Bonds' firefighting prevented a major explosion, according to NPS Fire Chief R. G. Nutt.

Last week, Bonds was presented a congratulatory letter from Rep. Leon Panetta, D-Monterey, and a certificate of recognition from State Sen. Henry Mello, D-Watsonville. But it was about three weeks after the fire that Bonds received his real reward. In November, he traded in his service revolver and solitary patrols to become a member of the fire department he assisted.

"I thought I was just doing my job," Bonds said, adding that he'd pretty much forgotten about the fire. Bonds said he prefers fighting fires and the company he keeps in the firehouse to working alone.

NPS Firefighter Vance S. Bonds

But not everyone is thrilled -particularly your child- who reacts strongly and adversely to the new person in the life of his or her parent.
