AjayKSharmareceivedhisBEinElectronicsand Electrical Communication Engineeringfrom Punjab University Chandigarh, Indiain1986,MSinElectronicsandControlfromBirla Institute of Technology (BITS), Pilaniin the year 1994 and PhD in ElectronicsCommunicationandComputerEngineeringintheyear1999fromNITKurukshetra.

His Ph D thesis was on "Studies onBroadband Optical CommunicationSystems and Networks". After servingvarious institutes and organizations from1986 to 1995, he has joined NationalInstituteofTechnology(ErstwhileRegionalEngineeringCollege)JalandharasAssistantProfessorintheDepartmentofElectronicsand Communication Engineering in theyear 1996. From November 2001, he hasworkedasProfessorintheECEdepartmentandthereafterhehasworkedasProfessorin Computer Science & Engineering

an InstituteofNational Importanceunderthe aegis of Ministry of Human ResourceDevelopment, Government of India. NITDelhiwasregisteredassocietyon2ndJune2010 under the Society Registration Act,1860 and was brought in the ambit ofNational InstituteofTechnologyAct,2007throughanamendmentofAct in theyear2012.

Initially, in order to closely monitor andfacilitate the work of establishment, NITDelhiwasmentoredbyNITWarangal. Fortwo academic years 2010-11 to 2011-12,NIT Delhi was nurtured by NIT Warangalwith all necessary academic and researchfacilities.

The site selection committee wasconstituted on 25th November 2011 byMinistryofHumanResourceDevelopment,GOI tofinalize site forpermanentcampusofNITDelhi. TheCommitteevisited somepre-identified sites in Delhi region inconsultationwithDDA&Govt.ofNCT,Delhion8thJune2012toascertainthesuitabilityandtogiveitsrecommendationsinrespectof site for permanent campus of NITDelhi. As per the recommendation of siteselectioncommittee,NarelasubcityDelhiwasidentifiedassiteforNITDelhi.

Intheyear2012,NITDelhishiftedfromitsMentor Institute NITWarangal to its ownstate location at its temporary premisesof “Integrated Institute of Technology,Dwarka” and the same was formallyinauguratedonAugust12,2012.

After cabinet decision on 25th April 2013,landmeasuring 51.4 acres (20.8hectares)was allotted by Govt. of NCT of Delhi forsettingupofNITDelhi.

OnbehalfofMHRDthephysicalpossessionof land at Narela for setting up NIT Delhiwas taken over on 26th August 2014 byProfessorAjayKSharma,DirectorNITDelhi.

Further, due to paucity of space forcreation of essential laboratories andworkshops and also due to insufficienthostel accommodation for boys and girlsat Integrated Institute of TechnologyDwarka, the nearby campus Institute ofApplied Manpower Research, (under NitiAayog)wasidentifiedastransitcampusofNIT Delhi. After creating the state-of-artacademicaswellasadministrativefacilitiesat the proposed transit campus, InstitutewasthenshiftedtoNarelaon18thFebruary2014.Thefacilitiesandinfrastructureofthepresenttransitcampushasbeenenhancedandup-gradedtomakeitadigitalcampus.

TheresidentialfacilityforboyswascreatedatSatyawadiRajaHarishChandraHospital,Narela and TDI Kundali to accommodateabout300students.Theresidentialfacilityfor girlswas created at YWCA andNarelatransitcam-pustoaccommodateabout100students.

On 3rd September 2014, No ObjectionCertificatewas issued by DDA toMinistryof Human Resource Development, Dept.ofHigherEducation,GOIforsettingupNITDelhiatNarelasite.TheNBCCasexecutingagency for construction activities of NITDelhi was approved by Chairman, BOGon 25th September 2014 and letter in thisregardwasissuedtoNBCCon14thOctober2014. The constructionwork of boundarywall was started in December 2014 andcompleted in the beginning of 2016. Theappointment of architect consultant of

Architectural planning and EngineeringConsultancyServicesforNITDelhiCampusatNarelawasdoneon12thMarch2015 inconsultation with NBCC. The final masterplanofNITDelhiwaspresentedbyArchitectconsultantbeforethemembersofBOGandBWC for consideration and the samewasapproved by the Board on 11th July 2015.ThefinaldetailedprojectreportofNITDelhiforitspermanentcampustobedevelopedinphasesby2030toaccommodateabout6000 students has been submitted toMinistryofHumanResourceDevelopmentforapproval.

The memorandum of understanding forconstructionofNITDelhicampusatNarelasite was executed between NIT Delhiand NBCC on 12th August, 2015. Variousclearances have already been obtainedfrom Survey of India, Airport Authorityof India, Archaeological Survey of India,Department of fire and the rest of thestatutoryapprovalsarelikelytobeobtainedbyOctober2016.

NBCChasissuedthetenderforconstructionof thePhase-1ofNITDelhion5thAugust,2016 with a specified completion periodof18monthsandIamhappytoannouncethattheconstructionworkwillcommencefrom October 2016. The process of sitedevelopment for permanent campus hasalreadybegun.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIESAdmissionof students intoundergraduateprogramme in Computer Scienceand Engineering, Electronics and

Communication Engineering and Electrical& Electronics Engineering started fromthe academic session 2010-11 with firstbatch of 30 students in each discipline.The academic activities of NIT Delhi wereinitiatedatNITWarangal in theyear2010whichlatermovedtoatemporarycampusatDwarka,NewDelhi inJune2012andatpresent running at IAMR Transit Campus,Narela since February 2014 with limitedspaceofabout17acres.

Fromacademicyear2013-14thestudentsintake in each B.Tech programme wasincreased to 60. Also,M.Tech programmein the discipline of Electronics andCommunication Engineering with anintake of 15 students was started fromthe academic year 2013-14 and thatin Computer Science and Engineering(Analytics) with an intake of 15 studentsintheacademicyear2014-15.TheM.Techprogramme in Mechanical Engineering(CAD/CAM)hasbeenstartedfromAugust,2016.AdmissionstoalltheUGprogrammesare through an all India level competitiveexam(JEE-Main)andforallPGprogrammesonthebasisofvalidGATEscore.

In order to give boost to researchactivities, Ph.D. programmes were alsostarted from January 2014, in ComputerScience and Engineering, Electronics andCommunication Engineering, MechanicalEngineering, Chemistry, Physics,Mathematics andManagement. NIT Delhiat present has three undergraduate,three post graduate and PhDprograms infollowingdisciplines:

To promote academictransparency,theevaluatedanswersheetsare shown to the students at the end ofevery exam. Online StudentManagementSystem has been implemented right fromstudent registration to generation oftheir grade sheets. Syllabi of all UG& PG

programmehavebeenrevisedasperneedandrequirementoftheindustryandCGPAsystem has been introduced. PG & Ph.Dstudents also receive financial assistanceundervariousschemesofMHRD,UGCetc.

Power Systems & Drives. The aim of theprogrammesistopreparestudentsforthemodern challenges in manufacturing andrenewableenergyareas. Theprogrammesare also expected to explore the vastpotential of natural resources and openthemuptotheoutsidemarket.

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT actiVitiEsResearch projects & internships areundertakenbythestudentsoftheInstituteasapartofundergraduate&postgraduateprogrammes. Since inception, the facultyandstudentsoftheInstituteareproactivelyinvolvedinresearch&projectactivities.

The facultymembersareactively involvedin settingupnewU.G.&P.G. laboratoriesas well as research labs and new coursesof study. I would like to place on recordthatthefacultymembersofNITDelhihaveshownanindomitablespirittotheirchosenfields.Inspiteofvariousstumblingblocks,suchaslonghourstocommute,extraworkloadduetolessfacultyineachdepartment,theykeptuptheirdedicationspirittoupliftNITDelhi.

The institute also aims at enhancingResearch &Development activities and

establishment of Research Park andIncubation Centre to promote Start-up India campaign as Nodal Centre.NITDelhi has established a startup centre incollaboration with Department of Science& Technology and the Union Ministry ofHumanResourceDevelopment.Thecentreprovidesworkingspaceandseedgrantfortheenrolledstart-ups.

The Institute isactively involved inseveralinitiativesoftheMinistryofHumanResourceDevelopment like International Yoga daycelebration, Hindi Pakhwada, VigilanceAwareness Week, and Constitution Day.The institutehas been involved in varioussocial activities such as- Adoption of fivevillages near Narela and Blood donationcamp. In the All India Inter NIT Athletics, PowerLiftingandBodybuildingchampionshipheldatMNITJaipurfrom26th-28thFeb.,2016,12students participated from our instituteand gave excellent performance. For thefirst time in the history of NIT Delhi, ourstudentsbaggedOneGold,OneSilverandOneBronzeMedal.

Mr. Satyendra Kishore of ECE branch 3rdyearwonGoldMedalinunder55kgweightcategory BODYBUILDING Competition.He also came 2nd in overall bodybuildingcompetitioninwhichGoldmedalistsofallweightcategoriesparticipated.

Mr. Ankur Lal of EEE branch 4th yearwonSilverMedalinunder65kgBODYBUILDINGCompetition and Bronze Medal in under65 kgPOWER-LIFTINGCompetition. It is amatterofgreatpridefortheesteemofourinstitute.

SportsFest‘Zeal2014,2015&2016:AnnualSportsFestofNITDwasorganizedbySportsClub NIT Delhi where about 300 studentsparticipated in several sports events andshowed immense interestandenthusiasmtowards sports. The overall ChampionshipTrophy was bagged by Electrical &ElectronicsEngineering(EEE)department.

Several New Initiatives taken for thedevelop-ment of sports activities at NITDelhiare:-

• New cemented Badminton andBasketball court were constructed inthecampusofNITD.

initiativeofGovernmentofIndia,digitaltechnologies are being increasinglyused by this institute. • Swachh Bharat Abhiyan:UnderSwachhMission,NITDelhiismainlyfocusingoncleanliness in the offices/ surroundingareas, segregation of wastes, properdisposalof garbageasper theCentralPollution Control Board (CPCB) normsand providing protection cages forthe dustbins. Under this Mission theInstitutecarriedoutseriesofcleanlinessdrives in close cooperation with localpeople and labour community. TheInstitute has planted more than 1000treesamplingsinthecampus.

• Skill India:UndertheSkillIndiamissionofGovernmentof India,NITDelhihastaken steps to create opportunitiesand scope of development for youthespecially in rural areas. This leads toup-gradationoftheirskill,standardandincreasetheproductivityoftheexistingworkforce.

PlacEMEntMany companies of repute are showingkeen interest in hiring NIT Delhi studentseveryyearwithconsistentriseinpackages.Companies like Amazon, Housing.com,Balmer Lawrie, Paytm, Samsung, L&Tconstruction, Mitsubishi, to name a few,have visited the campus and hired thestudents.

Only three batches have passed out fromthe instituteandalumniofNITDelhihavealreadystartedmakingwavesintheworld.SS Harsha, a pass-out hasmade it to theUniversity ofMinnesota. Another studentMr.AnkitKumarhassecuredadmission inNCSU, USA; Saransh Gupta in UCLA, USA;likemanyothershasalsomadetheinstituteproudbymakingintoIIMIndore.

It gives me pleasure to share that theplacementrecordofourstudentshasbeenconsistently impressiveforthe2016,2015and 2014. The Placement record of theinstitute is on a constant escalation. Thepercentage of placement of graduatedBatch of 2016 is 81.36%, that of 2015 is73.2%thatof2014batchis53.2%andthatof2014postgraduatestudentsis50%.

institutE RanKinGI am happy to share that NIT Delhi hasbeen ranked in category A+++ two timesintheEngi-neeringCollegesSurveyduring2014-2015 and 2015-2016 by ChronicleMagazine. NIT Delhi participated in NIRFranking and ranked 22 among 31 NITsandranked92acrossall IITs,NITs,CentralUniversitiesandotherinstitutesofrepute.

nEW caMPusProgressofthepermanentcampusprojecthas been a high priority for us here atNIT Delhi. After taking over as Directorof the institute on 10th October 2013, Itook a detailed stock of the status andbottlenecks related to the project startingfromallocationof land followedby takingover the land and then appointment ofexecuting agency for constructing thepermanent campus of NIT Delhi withstate-of-art Technology, infrastructure andarchitecturaldesign.

IampleasedtosharethattheMasterplanforpermanentcampusofourInstitutehasbeen approved. The construction workof boundarywall is completewith a totalexpenditureofRs.4.5Crores.

The Detailed Project Report has beenprepared in consultation with NBCCand Architect Consultant which is dulysubmitted to Ministry of HRD, GOI forapprovaland tomeetfinancialmilestonesin construction. The tender for the firstphaseofconstructionhasbeenissuedon5thAugust2016whichcoverstheconstructionofCampus,StartupCentreandPlayGround.

The construction work of permanentcampuswillcommencefromOctober2016and Phase–I is expected to be completedwithin18months.Initiallyforphase-Iareaof132328squaremeterwillbeconstructedthat includes four main departmentbuildings, boys and girls hostel with thecapacityof296and120respectively.
