GOD’S GIFT OF MERCY DURING THE HOLY YEAR: THE JUBILEE INDULGENCE
Like his predecessors, Pope Francis offers all the faithful of the world an opportunity to gain a Jubilee Indul-gence. This indulgence is a special share in the mercy God offers to all sinners above and beyond the for-giveness of sins in the sacrament of reconciliation. As you will read, this spiritual gift can be received by a person who desires for himself or for someone else. The following excerpts explain how to prepare to receive this indulgence, as explained in Cardinal Sean O’Malley’s letter of decree granting it to the faithful of the Archdiocese of Boston. Here is the text of that letter of decree.
In light of this Letter, in the Archdiocese of Boston, the Christian Faithful may obtain the Jubilee Indulgence as follows: the faithful are called to make a brief pilgrimage to the Holy Door, open at the Cathedral of the Ho-ly Cross, Boston, Massachusetts at any time during the year of Mercy; OR on the occasion of the Vigil Mass on the Eve of the Solemnity of Mary, Holy Mother of God, December 31, 2015 at Saint Clement Shrine, Bos-ton, Massachusetts.
His Holiness, Pope Francis has decreed that those of the Christian Faithful for whom it is impossible to enter the Holy Door:
-- The sick, the elderly and those confined to their homes, by living with faith and joyful hope during their tri-als, may obtain the Jubilee Indulgence by receiving Communion or attending the Holy Mass and community prayer, even through the various forms of media;
-- Those incarcerated may obtain the Jubilee Indulgence by chapels of the prisons. May the gesture of directing their thought and prayer to the Father each time they cross the threshold of their cell, signify for them the pas-sage through the Holy Door, because the mercy of God is able to transform hearts, and is also able to trans-form bars into an experience of freedom;
-- Those who perform the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. The Holy Father states, "Each time that one of the faithful personally performs one or more of these actions, he or she shall surely obtain the Jubilee Indul-gence. Hence the commitment to live by mercy so as to obtain the grace of complete and exhaustive for-giveness by the power of the love of the Father who excludes no one;" and
-- The deceased. The Holy Father reminds us that we may gain the Jubilee Indulgence not only for ourselves, but for the deceased as well. He states: "...as we remember them in the Eucharistic celebration, thus we can, in the great mystery of the Communion of Saints, pray for them, that the merciful Face of the Father free them of every remnant of fault and strongly embrace them in the unending beatitude."
All members of the Christian Faithful of the Archdiocese of Boston who are truly contrite and moved by the spirit of charity, who wish to seek this indulgence are to make a profession of faith and observe the usual con-ditions: -- Sacramentally confess their sins; -- Participate in the celebration of, and receive, the Holy Eucharist with a reflection on mercy; -- Pray for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff, the Pope.
While the three conditions may be fulfilled several days before or after the performance of the indulgenced work, it is fitting that Communion be received, the prayer for the intention of the Holy Father, and the profes-sion of faith be said on the same day.
A single sacramental confession suffices for several plenary indulgences but receiving Communion and pray-ing for the intentions of the Holy Father are required for each indulgence.
This Decree will be effective from December 8, 2015 to November 20, 2016.
Given on 7th day of December, 2015. Cardinal Seán P. O'Malley Archbishop of Boston

Given on 7th day of December, 2015. Cardinal Seán P. O'Malley Archbishop of Boston Dado el 7 de diciembre de 2015. El cardenal Seán P. O'Malley arzobispo de Boston,

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January 31, 2016
O PRESENTE DE DEUS DURANTE O ANO SANTO: A indulgência jubilar
das várias formas de mídia;
Deus é capaz de transformar os corações, e também é capaz de transformar barras em uma experiência de liberdade;
- Confesse sacramentalmente seus pecados;
- Participar na celebração, e receber a Sagrada Eucaristia com uma reflexão sobre a misericórdia;
- Ore pelas intenções do Sumo Pontífice, o Papa.

The Pope on Life
Every child who is born brings us God's smile and invites us to recognize that life is his gift, a gift to be welcomed with love and preserved with care, always and at every mo-ment. God entrusts every child who is born to his parents: so how important is the family founded on marriage, the cradle of life and love! The House of Nazareth where the Ho-ly Family lived is the model and school of simplicity, patience and harmony for all Christian families. I pray the Lord that your families too may be welcoming places where these little ones can not only grow in good health but also in faith and love for God. -- Pope Benedict XVI, January 7, 2007
Youth Ministry, EDGE and Confirmation Updates! EDGE: Next Gathering February 7th, The "Souper-bowl" event, *Note details of this program below: Time and place, 10:00AM Mass, St. Thomas, class to follow in the parish school gym.

EDGE Students and families; Please join us for the 10:00AM Mass for February 7th at St. Thomas the Apostle followed by the EDGE Student gathering from 11-12:30 in the Parish School gym facility. This weekend is the first Sunday of the month when we make an offering to the St. Vincent de Paul food drive; please consider a gift offering of a nonperish-able food item for those needing support in their pantries. This food drive will be taken immediately after the gifts of bread an wine go forward to the al-tar; an empty basket will go forward for the recep-tion of those gifts. Parents are invited to stay and hear the presentation of the local pantry needs from our St. Vincent de Paul societies that reach out to the Salem, Peabody, and Lynn area. We are ever grate-ful for the wonderful gifts to those needing support during the holidays but hunger is a need that is 24/7. We hope the "empty soup bowls" that the stu-dents will be painting will remind them of those that go without; May we and the Lord that is within us remember the hungry and be aware of the ways in which we can reach out and feed the hungry...

Celebrate Catholic Schools Week
January 31 through February 6
Catholic Schools:
Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service
The North Region of the Archdiocese of Boston boasts 28 Catholic schools, from elementary to high school. During the week of January 31, visit one of the schools and see why Catholic education is so successful and important.
By choosing Catholic education students have a unique opportunity to develop the whole person through spiritual and academic formation. A Catholic education prepares the student to make a difference in the world.
The students that attend Catholic schools in the Archdiocese outperform their national peers --elementary school students score well above the national average on national assessments, the av-erage SAT score for secondary school students is significantly above the national average, and the secondary school graduates matriculate to college at a greater rate than their state and national public school peers.
Support our schools!
Encourage enrollment in our Catholic schools!

By Dr. Scott Hahn Prophet to the Nations
Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle C)
God's words in today's First Reading point us beyond Jere-miah to Jesus. Like Jeremiah, Jesus was consecrated in the womb and sent as a "prophet to the nations" (see Luke 1:31-33).
Like the prophets before Him, Jesus too faces hostility. In today's Gospel, the crowd in His hometown synagogue quickly turns on Him, apparently demanding a sign, some proof of divine origins - that He's more than just "the son of Joseph."
The sign He gives them is that of the prophets Elijah and Elisha. From their colorful careers Jesus draws two stories. In each, the prophets bypass "many...in Israel" to bestow God's blessings on non-Israelites who had faith that the prophets were men of God (see 1 Kings 17:1-16; 2 Kings 5:1-14). "None...not one" in Israel was found deserving, Jesus emphasizes.
His point isn't lost on His audience. They know He's likening them to the "many...in Israel" in the days of the prophets. That's why they try to shove Him off the cliff. As He promised to protect Jeremiah, the Lord delivers Jesus from those who would crush Him.
And as were Elijah and Elisha, Jesus is sent to proclaim God's gift of salvation - not exclusively to one nation or people, but to all who realize in faith that from the womb God alone is their hope, their rescuer, their "rock of refuge," as we sing in today's Psalm.
Prophecies, Paul tells us in today's Epistle, are partial and pass away "when the perfect comes." In Jesus, the word of the prophets has been brought to perfection, fulfilled in those who have ears to hear, as He declares in today's Gos-pel.
Greater than the gifts of faith and hope, Jesus shows us how to love as He loved, to love God as our Father, as One Who formed us in the womb and destined us to hear His saving Word.
This is the salvation, the "mighty works of the Lord," that we, as the Psalmist, are thankful to proclaim daily in the Eucharist.

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary time In the Gospel today, Jesus show us that we are called to place gospel values before
any other values and to be willing to put our lives on the line for them. Taking care of God’s poor is in-deed living gospel values. In the month of January, through your gifts, the So-ciety of St. Vincent de Paul was able to assist fami-lies in our parish by providing food and basic neces-sities. Thank You!
