October 27, 2019 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD Today’s readings invite us into prayer, into relationship with God. Because relationships feel more natural when we know one another well, Sirach encourages us to know God better. In his wisdom, Sirach tells us what God is like: fair, open-minded, compassionate, and attentive. “The Lord will not delay,” he says. Knowing that God’s help comes right on time, whenever we need it, calms our hearts and helps us trust the Lord. In his second Letter to Timothy, Saint Paul demonstrates his own trust in God. Despite the grueling struggles Saint Paul has faced because of his Christian faith, he praises the Lord for rescuing him time and again. Today’s Gospel draws us close to Jesus too, revealing his special love for the poor and humble. As Jesus tells his parable about the prayer habits of a Pharisee and a tax collector, our hearts long to become as gentle as Christ’s. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The liturgical readings of this final month in the Church year are keyed to the end of time and the fulfillment of Jesus’ saving acts. Nowhere is this more fully celebrated than in Mexico, where November 2 is the “Day of the Dead.” Missionaries moved an ancient Aztec festival from midsummer to November, linking the festival to Christian themes. Today, it is a time for remembering the dead and celebrating the continuity of life, principally by festive picnics in cemeteries. There are special foods and games, and people socialize with other families and tell favorite stories about their dear ones. The sweetness of life is honored by sugary desserts and treats. Flowers, music, lights, and feasting assure that the day is not at all morbid. Traditionally, the day begins with Mass, a procession to the cemetery, and a morning feast. Most families have a special dinner with the pan de muerto, or “bread of the dead.” A toy skeleton is baked into the loaf, and the one who bites into it is considered lucky indeed. 27 de octubre de 2019 Trigésimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario LA RELACIÓN CON DIOS Las lecturas de hoy nos invitan a la oración, hacia una relación con Dios. Pues las relaciones se sienten más naturales cuando conocemos mejor uno con el otro. El libro del Eclesiástico nos anima a conocer mejor a Dios. En su sabiduría, este libro nos dice cómo es Dios, justo, de mente abierta, compasivo y atento. “El Señor no tarda” dice. Sabiendo que la ayuda de Dios llega en el debido momento, donde sea que la necesitemos, calma nuestros corazones y nos ayuda a confiar en el Señor. En la segunda carta a Timoteo, san Pablo demuestra su propia confianza en Dios. A pesar de las luchas agotadoras que san Pablo ha enfrentado a causa de su fe cristiana, él alaba al Señor por haberlo rescatarlo una y otra vez. El Evangelio de hoy nos acerca también a Jesús, revelando su especial amor por los pobres y humildes. Es interesante el contraste entre los dos días. Un día recordamos brujas y zombis y al siguiente conmemoramos vírgenes y mártires, religiosos y laicos comprometidos todos con una cosa en común: su amor a Dios, un amor que se hace carne en obras de caridad y justicia. La mayoría de los santos se hicieron santos gracias a los monstruos que los rodeaban. Los primeros mártires cristianos murieron a mano de los monstruos romanos, muchos religiosos medievales se refugiaban en Dios para protegerse de los monstruos internos que los tentaban con sexo, dinero y poder. Y en América muchos como Manuel Chin Sooj se hicieron testigos de la justicia en manos de los monstruos de gobiernos injustos. ETIQUETA EN MISA Ettiquette no se trata solo del comportamiento en una fiesta o reunión formal. También hay una etiqueta masiva que se descuida: 20 cosas para recordar en la misa: 1. Uno debe ayunar durante al menos 1 hora antes de recibir la Sagrada Comunión. Las únicas excepciones son medicamentos, agua o, a menos que alguien esté enfermo y necesite comer antes. 2. No empaques una canasta de bocadillos para niños. No es un pic-nic. Las únicas excepciones serían leche para bebés, agua para el sacerdote o coro y enfermos. 3. No te muerdas las uñas, indica nerviosismo. No sacudas las pier-nas, indica tensión. No se inquiete con su cabello, indica distracción. Es posible que no te hayan enseñado esto cuando eras joven, que es incorrecto enfocarte en cualquier otra persona u objeto, cuando el enfoque debería estar solo en Dios. 4. Nunca mastique chicle en la Iglesia. Rompe tu ayuno. 5. Cruzarse con agua bendita al entrar y salir de la iglesia. Este es un recordatorio de nuestro Bautismo, que nos hizo miembros de la Iglesia de Cristo. 6. Vístete modestamente, la misa no es un desfile de modas. Y las misas de Navidad y Pascua no son parte de la Semana de la Moda de Milán. Vístase de una manera que atestigüe su fe para no seducir a nadie. No vaya a misa para ver quién está de moda en la parro-quia. 7. Ven temprano y permanece lo más cerca posible del altar. No entres cuando la mitad de la masa haya terminado. No te quedes afuera de la Iglesia. Uno no debe ir a misa por el gusto de hacerlo o para ser notado o para evitar preguntas incómodas. 8. Los teléfonos celulares nunca deben usarse durante la misa para revisar mensajes, hacer llamadas o enviar mensajes de texto. Man-téngalos en modo silencioso. Ninguna llamada es más importante que la masa. 9. Los jóvenes deben ofrecer sus asientos a las embarazadas, enfer-mas o de edad avanzada que estén de pie. 10. Cuando entremos y salgamos de la Iglesia, haga una genuflexión (doble la rodilla) hacia el Tabernáculo. Cristo está presente por nuestro bien. Al permitir que nuestra rodilla derecha golpee el piso, reconocemos que Él es nuestro Señor y Dios. Si alguien es física-mente incapaz de genuflexionar, entonces una reverencia es sufi-ciente. Durante la misa, si pasas frente al altar o tabernáculo, in-clínate con reverencia. 11. Siéntate en silencio en la iglesia. No hable ni comente sobre lo que usan los demás. No vas a juzgar el estilo de vestir, el maquillaje o los accesorios de nadie. 12. Lleva a los niños ruidosos detrás. A veces el bebé estará inquie-to. Los padres con niños pequeños deben sentarse al final de un banco, para que puedan llevar al niño rápidamente. No bromees con ellos ni molestes a los demás durante la misa. Evita que jueguen con himnarios y material de lectura. No bromees ni juegues con niños pequeños durante la misa. 13. Prepare su ofrenda antes de la misa. Cristo nos dice que no de-jemos que su mano izquierda sepa lo que hace su mano derecha cuando hace su ofrenda. Mantener la canasta mientras saca su bil-letera puede ser una gran escena. Cavar la canasta para el cambio está mal. Ven a misa con tu ofrenda preparada. 14. No dormir, soñar despierto, leer boletines o rezar el rosario du-rante la misa. Presta atención a la Palabra de Dios. 15. Respeta la adoración. Párese durante la lectura del evangelio y otros momentos establecidos durante la adoración. Arrodillarse ante la consagración, es parte de la adoración. Las únicas excep-ciones son para los enfermos, las personas con problemas de rodilla, los ancianos y los bebés. Si no puede arrodillarse, ocupe un banco que no obstruya la vista del Señor de aquellos que sí se arrodillan. 16. Inclínate antes de recibir la Sagrada Comunión, estás ante Dios. 17. Di Amén e inclínate antes de recibir la Comunión. No deje caer el host, ni juegue con su lengua ni lo muerda. 18. No te vayas temprano. Deberíamos quedarnos hasta el final de la bendición final y el himno recesivo que la acompaña, si hay una. Recuerda quién dejó la Última Cena temprano (Judas). 19. Ore después de la misa, agradeciendo a Dios por sus abundantes bendiciones. 20. Salir en silencio. Lo alentamos a visitar a otros, especialmente a sus pastores, como parte de la comunión cristiana, pero una vez que esté fuera del santuario principal de la iglesia, no molestará a otros que quieran quedarse y rezar.

MASS ETIQUETTE Ettiquette is not only about behavior at a party or formal meeting. There is also Mass Etiquette which is neglected: 20 Things to remember at Mass: 1. One must fast for at least 1 hour before receiving Holy Commun-ion. The only exceptions are medicine, water or unless someone is ill and needs to eat sooner. 2. Don't pack a snack basket for kids. It's no picnic. The only excep-tions would be milk for infants, water for the priest or choir and sick. 3. Don't bite your nails, it indicates nervousness. Don't shake your legs, it indicates tension. Don't fidget with your hair, it indicates distraction. You may haven't been taught this when you were young, that it is wrong to focus on any other person or object, when the focus should be on God alone. 4. Never chew gum in Church. It breaks your fast. 5. Cross yourself with Holy Water on entering and leaving the church. This is a reminder of our Baptism, which made us members of Christ's Church. 6. Dress modestly, the mass is not a fashion show. And Christmas and Easter masses are not a part of Milan Fashion Week. Dress in a way that gives witness to your faith not to seduce anyone. Don't go for mass to check out who is hot in the parish. 7. Come early and be as close to the altar as possible. Don't walk in when half the mass is over. Don't stand outside the Church. One shouldn't go for mass for the heck of it or to be noticed or to avoid uncomfortable questions. 8. Cell phones should never be used during Mass for checking mes-sages, making calls or texting. Keep them on silent mode. No call is more important than mass. 9. Youngsters should offer their seats to the pregnant, sick or aged who are standing. 10. When we enter and leave Church, genuflect (bow your knee) toward the Tabernacle. Christ is present for our sake. By allowing our right knee to hit the floor, we acknowledge He is our Lord and God. If someone is physically unable to genuflect, then a bow is suf-ficient. During Mass, if you pass in front of the altar or tabernacle, bow reverently. 11. Sit quietly in Church. Don't talk or comment on what others wear. You don't go there to judge anyone's dressing style, make -up or accessories. 12. Take loud children behind. Sometimes the baby will be restless. Parents with young kids should sit at the end of a pew, so that you can take the kid behind quickly. Don't joke with them & disturb others during Mass. Stop them from playing with hymn books and reading material. Don't joke or play with toddlers during mass. 13. Prepare your offering before Mass. Christ tells us not to let your left hand know what your right hand is doing when you make your offering. Keeping the basket while you get your wallet out can be quite a scene. Digging the basket for change is wrong. Come to mass with your offering prepared. 14. No sleeping, day-dreaming, bulletin reading or saying the rosary during mass. Pay attention to God's Word. 15. Respect the worship. Stand during the gospel reading and other set time during worship. Kneel at the consecration, it is part of wor-ship. The only exceptions are for the sick, people with knee prob-lems, aged and those with infants. If you can't kneel occupy a pew that does not obstruct the view of the Lord from those who do kneel. 16. Bow before receiving Holy Communion, you are before God. 17. Say Amen and bow before receiving Communion. Do not drop the host, or play with it with your tongue or bite it. 18. Do not leave early. We should stay to the end of the final bless-ing and the recessional hymn that accompanies it, if there is one. Remember who left the Last Supper early (Judas). 19. Pray after Mass, thanking God for His abundant blessings. 20. Leave quietly. We encourage you to visit others especially your pastors as a part of Christian fellowship, but once you are outside of the main sanctuary of the church so you won't disturb others who want to stay and pray.
