Tips for Multiple Choice Tests

1. Read the stem of the question carefully and completely before looking at the answers

2. Clearly determine what the question is asking, key words, try to formulate an answer in your mind before reading answers

3. Read each answer carefully and determine if it is an appropriate answer to the question asked

4. Eliminate obvious incorrect answers and try to narrow choices down to 2

5. If cannot choose between the 2 – Educated Guess

6. Avoid answers that say: always, never, none, all, every – health care fields seldom are this clear

Tips for Multiple Choice Tests7. Avoid answers based on isolated rules or only applicable to

certain regions or not broadly practiced

8. If questions asks: “What is the 1st thing you would do?”• All options may be correct

9. Be alert for grammar clues• Any answer that is inconsistent with the format of the

question may be incorrect• Well-edited questions will have well-edited answers• If question indicates a plural response – answer will be

in plural form

10. Be careful with words Not, Least, Except• Read answers carefully and slow down

Tips for Multiple Choice Tests

11. Watch for “All or None of the Above”• Impose a broad exclusiveness or inclusiveness• None rarely correct = it negates the whole premise

of the question

12. Do not look at pattern of answers – irrelevant

13. Be careful to mark the correct answer space on computer
