NASCLA MISSIONThe National Association of State Contractors Licensing Agencies (NASCLA) was founded in 1962 as

a nonprofit corporation. Its membership is comprised of states that have enacted laws regulating the

business of contracting. NASCLA is dedicated to the mutual assistance of its member states in striving

for the better regulation of the construction industry to protect the health, safety and welfare of the

general public.

“As we continue to grow into a global economy, NASCLA is a model organization

by providing its members, from all over our country, the opportunity to

network and share ideas about the construction industry.”

— Yolanda Collazos Kizer, CASA Fenix Enterprises

“Why reinvent the wheel if you can get guidance from NASCLA member states

that saves you time and money. It is amazing that so many states are facing

or have had similar situations or problems and how they were resolved.

Working together brings great results!”

— George Whalen, Rhode Island Contractors’ Registration and Licensing Board

past few years to include NASCLA Committee Meetings, Training Sessions and

NASCLA / NASCLA Publications, Inc. Board Meetings.

the country. NASCLA committees meet at least twice a year (at the Mid Year Meeting and Annual

Conference) and regularly by teleconference.

EDUCATION & TRAINING PROGRAMS

In order to ensure the success of our members, NASCLA offers a variety of education and training

programs each year. Seminars, workshops and certification classes are offered during the NASCLA

Annual Conferences and Mid Year Meetings. Webinars and additional opportunities will also be

NASCLA ACCREDITED EXAMINATION PROGRAMIt is one of those times in an organization’s lifetime to say, “Mission Accomplished!” The first National Association of State Contractors Licensing Agencies (NASCLA) Accredited Examination for Commercial General

Building Contractors was administered on September 8, 2009 in Alabama. The administration of this examination is a milestone in the association’s history. NASCLA has been working at least ten years toward the goal of improving the quality of construction examinations and enabling the mobility of contractors across jurisdictions. NASCLA committee members, testing providers and consultants have participated in making this accomplishment truly a collaborative effort. The NASCLA Accredited Examination for Commercial General Building Contractors is used by state contractor licensing agencies to test commercial general building contractor candidates who are applying for a contractor’s license. The examination has been designed to reduce redundant licensing requirements and assist contractors who need to be licensed in multiple jurisdictions. Candidates who pass the NASCLA Accredited Examination for Commercial General Building Contractors will be entered into the NASCLA National Examination Database (NED). NED is a national registry that serves as a clearinghouse for people that have taken the NASCLA Accredited Examination for Commercial General Building Contractors. NED has two (2) main features: 1. Applicants register on NED in order to send their transcripts to other state contractor licensing agencies who accept the examination and

2. State agencies access NED to view applicants’ transcripts and validate that they have passed the examination. For more information on the NASCLA Accredited Examination for Commercial General Building Contractors, please visit the NASCLA Website at www.nascla.org or www.nascla.org/accredited-examination.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q.Is the NASCLA Accredited Examination Program considered a “National License?”

A.No, the NASCLA Accredited Examination eliminates the trade examination ONLY for the participating state agencies. Contractors will still have to meet other state licensure requirements within each participating state agency.

Q.What is the difference between the NASCLA Accredited Examination and an examination based on one jurisdiction?

A.The NASCLA Accredited Examination was developed using contractors from multiple jurisdictions across the United States and based on a national job occupational analysis. Please visit www.nascla.org/resources-examination-providers to review the NASCLA Test Specifications.

Q.If I have taken and passed the NASCLA Accredited Examination, what do I do next?

A.Register for your NASCLA National Examination (NED) Account. The NED account will allow you to transfer your testing information on to the participating state agencies so they know that you have passed the NASCLA Accredited Examination

for Commercial General Building Contractors.

Q.What is the difference between state agencies administering the NASCLA Accredited Examination & state agencies accepting the NASCLA Accredited Examination?

A.The state agencies administering the NASCLA Accredited Examination are offering the NASCLA Accredited Examination as their agencies trade examination. You can also take the NASCLA Accredited Examination directly through PSI Services, LLC. If you take it directly through PSI Services, LLC instead of one of the administering state agencies, you will have to purchase individual transcripts from NED to send to each state agency. State agencies that are accepting the NASCLA Accredited Examination allow you to use your NASCLA Accredited Examination passing score in place of their trade examination.
