Things always get better. Stay optimistic. Bad things and bad feelings always go away again, although this might take a bit of time. Then things will seem better. Being optimistic is expecting things to get better. Being pessimistic is expecting bad times to continue. Being optimistic means expecting that good things are more likely to happen. You can get over bad times in your life more easily if you think optimistically and look on the bright side. Being optimistic means that you expect things to get better so you cope better and bounce back. If you think pessimistically, you don’t expect things to get better and therefore it is harder to cope. Anne Doherty Coordinator Rumbalara Apologies for any confusion that has been caused by referring to Kindergarten as Early Stage 1 or ESt1. Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Narara Public School is a Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) school. PBL brings together the whole-school community to contribute to developing a positive, safe and supportive learning culture. The aim of PBL is to improve social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes for children and young people. When PBL is implemented well, teachers and students have more time to focus on relationships and classroom instruction. Students and staff benefit from:

• reduced problem behaviour • increased time focused on instruction • improved social-emotional wellbeing • positive and respectful relationships among students and staff • support for teachers to teach, model and respond effectively to student need • a predictable learning environment where staff and students know what is expected

to deliver effective practices that can be sustained over time. Implementation of PBL requires the commitment of the whole school community which includes parents and community members. The Three Tiers PBL is based on a three-tiered continuum of prevention and intervention: Tier 1 - Universal prevention: school-wide and classroom systems for all students, staff and settings. Tier 2 - Targeted interventions: small group systems for students at-risk behaviourally and academically. Tier 3 - Intensive interventions: systems for students with high-risk behaviour and/or learning needs. Behaviour Management System for Classroom Classroom Traffic Light visuals are displayed in all classes at Narara Public School. They are used to encourage students to self-regulate their own behavior and monitor where they are sitting within the six-step management process. All students start each session on Safe Respectful Leaners and progress up the six steps if their behavior escalates. Teachers move the students name up the chart as they provide individual redirection.

Safe Respectful Learners: Student is calm and cooperative. Rule Reminder: Student requires minimal redirection to remain on task. Move Seats: Student did not respond to redirection so will need to move seats to complete set tasks (therapeutic rapport). Time In: Student has continued inappropriate behaviour, time out given within the classroom (Yellow Slip). Buddy Class: Student behaviour has continued to escalate, student needs to be removed from current environment into another classroom (Orange Slip). Assistant Principal: Student may refuse to attend Buddy Class and/or is non responsive to previous intervention steps.

Positive Rewards Term 3 Narara Public School has implemented a new reward system in Term 3. This new system focuses on identifying positive behaviour and rewarding those students who follow school expectations. When students meet or exceed our school’s expectations they have the opportunity to receive a Sammy token from teachers. The three school expectations that students may receive a Sammy for, are: At Narara we are safe; At Narara we are respectful; and At Narara we are learners. Students are asked to hand any Sammys that they receive to their classroom teachers, who will be keep a record of how many Sammys each student has handed in. Children who receive 15 or more Sammy tokens will participate in a reward day at the end of the term. The rewards day (specific information on rewards to be released ASAP) will be levelled according to student achievement. i.e.

• Students who receive 15 Sammys receive a bronze level reward • • Students who receive 20 Sammys receive a silver level reward • • Students who receive 25+ Sammys receive a gold level reward

Students who do not receive the base level of 15 Sammys (and students who have attained 15+ Sammys whilst also receiving Orange or Yellow slips consistently throughout the term) will not attend rewards day. Instead, these students will attend Positive Behaviour for Learning classes with the ultimate goal being that they will have a stronger understanding of the school’s expectations in the future. This will hopefully allow these students to be more successful in meeting the school expectations in the following terms. Sammy records will be reset at the start of every term, giving all students equal ability to achieve a reward day experience at the end of each term. As a school community we must work together to encourage all students to consistently meet the expectations of Narara Public School. We welcome feedback from all members of the community; staff, parents, students and others as we implement this new rewards system.
