1. THE QUR'AN - SURAH QURAISH

The Quraish (Revealed in Makkah, 4 ayat) Interesting facts: The Quraish were a powerful merchant tribe

that controlled Mecca and its Ka’aba. This Surah reminds the Quraish about the

safety and security they enjoyed during their trade journey to Syria and Yemen. They became rich from their trade activities.

This Surah teaches the Quraish to do two

things: (1) to realize Allah’s blessings upon them and (2) to worship Allah alone as a way of saying thanks. We should remember to thank Allah for His blessings, particularly for health, security, freedom and food.

The Elephant (Revealed in Makkah, 5 ayat) Interesting facts: This Surah tells the story of Allah saving

the Ka’abah from the evil plots of enemies.

A ruler named Abrahah attacked Makkah

with large African elephants in order to destroy the Ka’bah. Before Abrahah could harm the Ka’abah, Allah destroyed his army by sending flights of birds and striking the army with stones of baked clay.

The enemies of Islam may have great

power and large numbers, but they cannot succeed. Allah chose small birds to destroy the big army.

3. THE QUR'AN - SURAH AL-HUMAZAH AND AT-TAKATHUR

The Slanderer (Revealed in Makkah, 9 ayat) Interesting facts: This Surah provides strict instructions to

stop the evil habits of back-biting, abusing wealth, and defaming people.

The Humazah type of people is powerful

and oppressive; they use power against the poor and weak calling them bad names and making fun of the good people. The Lumazah type is a backbiter who spread rumors against other good people.

Arabic word Hutamah actually means a

thing which crushes everything into pieces. The Fire of Hell, especially lit for such arrogant people will crush their minds and bodies into pieces.

Assignment:

The Multiplication (Revealed in Makkah, 8 ayat) Interesting facts: Takathur means multiplying, competing to

increase worldly matters, piling up. When people are in their graves, their souls will realize they missed the real opportunities in this life.

Allah does not discourage wealth. Some

Prophets were hardworking and wealthy. But, all of them treated wealth as a gift from Allah. They spent their wealth to benefit others.

We should not let wealth distract us from the

main goal of life and remembrance of Allah.
