1.LOYALTY, LOYALTY,LOYALTY!Chances are good that byadopting a senior mutt, youhave rescued a wonderful, loving canine from anuntimely, unfortunate andunwarranted death. A seniormutt can sense that he or shewas saved and will beeternally loyal to his or hernew “forever” family.2.EASE OF GUARDIANSHIPSenior mutts are mellow, relaxed and ready for a newhome. They are past the puppychewing and destruction stageand usually come with basictraining. Most senior muttsare happiest sitting at yourfeet or curled up in their bednext to yours.3.NO HUGE LIFESTYLECHANGEYou don't need to worry aboutpuppy proofing your houseand constant training. (“No!Drop it! Not yours!") Andolder dogs let you get a goodnight's sleep!4.STRESS RELIEVERLife today can be very hectic.Studies have shown thatanimal companionship candecrease blood

Mostknow, for example, thatshoes are for walking andbones are for chewing.7.CALM, COOL &COLLECTEDMost senior dogs do notdemand the time and attentionthat a younger dog does andare satisfied with casual walksand cuddling. Many seniormutts snooze the day awayinside while you are busy atwork and are

waiting calmly at the door foryou when you return home.8.OLD DOG, NEW TRICKSSenior dogs can learn newtricks and be valuable familyand community members. They also make excellenttherapy dogs.9.COMPANIONSHIP FORALLSenior dogs make wonderful

"There are threefaithful friends - anold wife, an old dogand ready money."

The shelter hasrecently assisted in both ahoarding and a puppy millsituation. All of these dogsare making great progress in

their rehabilitation.The adjustment

to regular dog life can berather difficult. However, forthese dogs, it is going verywell, though many fromMississippi are still beingtreated for medical issues. Some that have been placedup for adoption already arestill patiently waiting for theirnew homes.

We had anincredible response to thesmall dogs retrieved from apuppymill. We had calls and

emails from all over the UnitedStates. Luckily, all of thesedogs have been adopted!

We have highexpectations for these littledogs. In their time here withus, they have made such greatprogress towards becomingtrue family dogs. We wouldlove to hear back from thoseadopters on their progress asthey adjust to a normal dog'slife. You can email us yourhappy tails to us [email protected]

Operation P.E.A.C.E.Place Every Adoptable Creature EncounteredOnce an animal has met the shelter's criteria for adoptability, all resources will be used to

maintain the animal's health and behavior until it's placed in a forever home.No adoptable animal will be euthanized soley due to space.

Stray or Feral – Cats Living on the Wild Side

Feral cats are the“untamed”or“wild” offspring ofdomestic cats and are primarilythe result of a pet owners'abandonment or failure to spayand neuter their animals, allowing them to breeduncontrolled. Feral cat“colonies” can be found behindshopping areas or businesses,

in alleys, parks, apartmenthomes, abandoned buildings, and rural areas. Feral cats areelusive and do not trusthumans.

Many peopleassume when they abandonthese animals that the animalswill survive with no problem.Contrary to this popular belief, domestic animals do notautomatically return to their"natural" instincts and cannotfend for themselves! Thealternative for almost everystray is a violent end or slow, painful death. Many abandonedanimals or "throwaways" dieeveryday from starvation, disease, and abuse --- or asfood to a predator.

One pair ofunaltered cats, which can have

two or more litters every year, can produce 420,000 offspringover a seven-year period!

Feeding feral orstray cats may draw more catsand wildlife to feed as well. Asthe law sees it, anyone whofeeds stray or feral cats for anextended period of time isconsidered the owner and canbe held accountable for theanimals welfare, which includesvaccinations, feeding, and ifany bites or complaints occur.

At the Shelter, westrive to help where we can.Call us if you need assistance incatching feral or stray cats. Youmay also contact the FloydCounty Animal Rescue Leaguefor assistance in spaying andneutering. (812)949-9099

Everyday, we areasked at the Shelter if we are"No-Kill". This term may bedefined differently by manypeople. Many believe that "No-Kill" means that nothing is evereuthanized for any reason

Many sheltersthat claim to be "No-Kill" canclaim this because they havethe ability to turn down intakesof unhealthy and unfriendlyanimals. The also use this termwhen they are only euthanizinganimals classified asunadoptable. The NAFC AnimalShelter, as a municipal Shelter, does not provide limited intakesfor our community. We areobligated to take in any dog orcat from a county resident withproper ID. This includes thesick, injured, aggressive, andferal animals. For the public'ssafety, we cannot adopt out

these animals. We also offerowner requested euthanasia, making it impossible for us tobe "No-Kill" according to somedefinitions of the word.

We havedeveloped and accepted theOperation P.E.A.C.E. intiativehere at the NAFC Shelter. Ourpolicy is to evaluate everyanimal that comes into theShelter by tempermant andoverall health. If the animalpasses these accessments, wecan place it up for adoption.Once on the adoptable floor, theanimal will stay until he or sheis adopted as long as theirhealth and behavior maintainstable and treatable.

Our Shelter hashas a newly placed AdoptionGuaruntee Program for peoplewho wish to have their petevaluated for adoptability and

maintain the right to reclaimthe animal. With this program,a fee can be paid by the pets'owner for an evaluation withthe Animal Care Coordinator. The owner can then decide todo the program where we willhold the animal on theadoptable floor for 12 days. Ifthe animal does not getadopted, the owner has theright to decide whether tocontinue, take the animal back,or sign the animal over. Feesvary based on the animalsvaccination and spay/neuterstatus.

We encourageother shelters to accept theOperation P.E.A.C.E. intiativeand give adoptable animals afighting chance at finding theirforever homes, rather thenputting a timeline on them.
