NAET* is an acronym or Nambudripads Allergy EliminationTechniques. Dr. Devi Nambudripad, a physician also licensed inchiropractic medicine and acupuncture, discovered her allergyelimination program almost 30 years ago in November o 1983as she attempted to thwart an adverse allergic reaction to avegetable she had just consumed. She ound that stimulation o

certain acupuncture points balanced her body with the substance, averting a ull-blown reaction. In the atermath o this discovery, Dr.Nambudripad began to explore energetic medicine.

NAET is based on the premise that we are electromagneticbeings and that everything has an electromagnetic feld. Chinesemedicine philosophy suggests that exposure to substances that arenot compatible with ones energy results in energy blockages inthe bodys meridians. Meridians are any o the pathways alongwhich the bodys vital energy ows.1 There are 12 meridians in thebody. When energy blockages occur, they result in disease. Dr.Nambudripad broadly defnes allergy as an outward maniestationo disease brought about by energy blockages.

Though NAET treatments are not well defned rom the perspectiveo standard or conventional therapies, the premise o NAET is rootedin acupuncture and Chinese medicine principles. Inormed by Dr.Nambudripads multidisciplinary background, the NAET approach isgeared toward reconciling the energetic pathways governed by thebrain and nervous system to the bodys organ systems in the presenceo an allergen. Recognizing that the brain creates its electrical signalsthrough a complex chemical process that cross-reacts with the immunesystem, Dr. Nambudripad theorizes that a persons sensitivity orallergy to a substance is rooted in neurochemical energy imbalances

and that NAETs meridian balancing technique can result indesensitization and elimination o the reaction.2 Similarly to rebootia computer, NAET operates on the premise that we can reboot onervous system and overcome the adverse reactions o the brain anbody that maniest as allergy.2

Nambudripads Allergy Elimination Techniques are noninvasive anduse either kinesiological3 or electrodermal screening techniques4 todetermine sensitivities or weaknesses to substances. I a weakness idetermined through neurosensitivity testing,5 it is balanced with thepersons energy through stimulation o acupressure points.

NAET treatments are designed to balance the body with thesubstance being desensitized on the physical, chemical, andemotional levels. NAET desensitizes one allergen at a time. Aterbalancing to the allergen, the person must avoid the item that wasbalanced or 25 hours; this provides the 24 hours needed or energto travel through the bodys meridian clock (see Figure 1), plus oneadditional hour or the energy to settle. The meridian clock is made

up o 12 two-hour intervals, one or each o the bodys meridians.Energy begins to circulate in the body at 3 am with the lung meridiaand ends with the liver meridian 24 hours later. Within each majormeridian, there are also micromeridians that generate energy toother meridian points. This energy can potentially interere with ullharmonization to the allergen i exposure occurs too soon. Thus, the25-hour substance avoidance time is essential to assure energeticcompatibility with the allergen across all meridians.6

Persons who are not severely immune defcient generally need juone treatment to desensitize one allergen. Thus, a person with a

    naet

everthin has an electromanetic eld. Chinese medicine philosoph sueststhat exposure to substances that are not compatible with ones ener results in

ener blockaes in the bods meridians. Meridians are an o the pathwasalon which the bods vital ener ows.

mild-to-moderate number o allergies might require approximately15-20 ofce visits to desensitize 15-20 ood and environmentalallergens. The initial visits ocus on balancing about 15 basic essential

nutrients; when these are completed, treatment can then ocus onchemicals, environmental allergens, immunizations, and so orth.7On the other hand, individuals who have signifcant reactivity to aparticular substance may require multiple desensitizations to both thesubstance and the chemical components comprising that substanceor to combinations o one or more related substances (such asstomach acid, pancreatic enzymes, and cytokines).

Sensitive individuals react to even the basic components o theoods they ingest (that is, proteins, minerals, and vitamins), meaningthat anything they eat or supplement with can cause a reaction.Eventually, these individuals react even to oods that once wereallowed or tolerated on elimination or rotation diets. NAET, thereore, seeks to build the body into compatibility not only with identifed

allergens but also with itsel. Immune-defcient people and individualswith chronic illness, autoimmune disease, and typical allergy-associated symptoms oten appear as though they are allergic tothemselves. In such cases, the bodys energy is so disrupted thatnothing these individuals try brings relie. An acupuncturist willfnd that the liver meridian is on fre or their chi (vital energy) isblocked, while a chiropractor may fnd that they are constantly out oalignment. In many instances, these individuals have suered or theirwhole lives, and their bucket is so ull that any additional drop into itcauses a complete overow o symptoms.

NAET balancing stops the downward spiral and (metaphorically)allows the water in the bucket to recede by energetically

reconciling the bodys energy to itsel as well as to the corecomponents o oods. Accordingly, the order o the frst 10-15treatments is important. For example, the frst ew treatments addresscore nutrients rom the majority o oods that we consume:

Egg albumin (one o the highest bioavailable proteins or

humans that closely resembles our own)

Egg mix (egg yolk is rich in choline, cholesterol, B vitamins,

vitamin A, and minerals essential to our nervous system) Calcium (an essential mineral or bodily unctions and

    musculoskeletal demands)

Vitamin C (necessary or connective tissue, growth, andhealing)

B complex (necessary or nervous and endocrine systems)

    Sugar (primary source o energy)

Iron (needed to carry oxygen throughout the body)

naeT and homeopaThyAs with all treatment options, individual responses to NAET vary. Itcan sometimes take multiple treatments to achieve desensitizationto a single item. Recognizing that homeopathy has long been usedto successully reduce allergy symptoms and response, a NAEThomeopathic protocol was designed to increase the efcacy otreatments and help reduce the possible need or multiple treatmentsor one allergen. The combination o the two modalities provides asynergistic remedy.

Homeopathic allergy treatment unctions by inducing thedownregulation o the immune system in relation to an oendingsubstance. Homeopathic remedies contain inormation about asubstance that can re-teach the body not to react to the substance

even though the allergen is not physically present in the remedy. This is similar to NAET, with the exception that homeopathic energysubstances are generally taken internally while NAET treatment isexternal. The use o homeopathy ater a NAET treatment involvesgiving a person oending substances in homeopathic orm in multiplequantities at dierent dilutions, thereby continuing to expose the bodyto the substance in an energetic orm. This can improve the outcomeo a single NAET treatment and reduce the possible need ormultiple treatments to an oending or highly reactive substance.8 TheNAET homeopathics also contain seven paired meridian ormulasspecifcally designed to optimize meridian ow and transer oinormation throughout the body (see Figure 2).

    naeT and auTism research

Dr. Nambudripad has conducted two studies examining the energeticbalancing brought about by the eects o NAET desensitizationtreatments on autistic children.9,10 She defnes allergy-related autismspectrum disorders (ASDs) in reerence to NAETs principle thatallergy can maniest in any orm o disease and that reconcilingthe body to allergens will diminish or eliminate those symptoms.11According to NAET theory, autism is a nutritional defciency disordercausing biological, neurological, and developmental problems inchildren.10 Dr. Nambudripad suggests that children with autism maybe suering rom allergies even i they do not maniest in a typicalallergic response.11

According to Dr. Bruce Shelton, the seven Paired Meridian Formulasare designed to prepare the meridians and their related organs toreceive signals and unblock and tone stuck meridians. The BasicNAET protocol has the practitioner locate the patients most blockedmeridian(s). I a meridian is blocked, the transer o inormationthrough the Meridian System during the complete NAET treatmentcycle may be compromised. These ormulas are designed tomaximize each meridians ability to unction properly.

The most recent study sought to determine whether NAETprocedures are eective in restoring verbal and nonverbalcommunication in children 3-10 years o age with allergy-relatedASDs.9 The study hypothesized that children with diagnosed

ASDs and related symptoms (such as no eye contact and/orinability to speak) would show a signifcant improvement over thecontrol group in verbal and nonverbal communication ater 50NAET treatments ocused on systematic desensitization to mostood allergen groups, environmental allergen groups, childhoodimmunizations, and other relevant allergenic substances. Inaddition to supporting its hypothesis, the studys fndings alsodemonstrated a reduction in autistic traits, including improved socialinteractions, improved play with other children, improved sleep, reduced restlessness, reduced irritability, and reduced abnormalbody movements (such as apping hands). The studys results alsosupported fndings rom a previous investigation conducted in2005.10 A third study, though not specifc to autism, assessed milk

allergy elimination with NAET.12 All three studies are registered atclinialTrials.gov.

To support urther research into NAETs eectiveness, Dr.Nambudripad recommends that individuals who are consideringNAET receive conventional allergy testing prior to beginning NAETtreatments. This allows or the possibility o collecting data to assessimprovements in IgE-mediated laboratory results ollowing NAET.

    conclusion

Guided by its underlying principles, NAET has been usedsuccessully to reduce (oten completely) the symptoms o illnessesother than typical allergic reactions. This is evidenced by support or

NAET rom well-known physicians working with autoimmune diseaseand chronic illness. For example, Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, researcherin the feld o chronic atigue syndrome and fbromyalgia and authoro From Fatigued to Fantastic, has described NAET as a benefcialadjunct to the therapies he recommends. Similarly, Dr. DavidBrownstein discusses the benefts o using NAET with chronically illpatients in his book Overcoming Arthritis.

As NAET receives more attention, it is important to note that Dr.Nambudripad cautions against modifcations o her techniques. There are no shortcuts, and it takes time to positively inuence apersons energy. In most cases, illnesses and sensitivities have builtup over many years. In addition, any trial o exposure to a previouslyknown allergic substance must be done under the supervision o a

medical practitioner. Nonetheless, because NAET is a noninvasive,energy-based modality that has resulted in or augmented therecovery o many individuals experiencing allergies and chronicconditions, it is a modality that deserves consideration.*
