Ist XV scoop 4pts in scrappy away win Portsmouth - 27pts -v- Warlingham 34pts For the first meeting between these clubs for several years Warlingham travelled to the South Coast looking for their first win in a month. Portsmouth started well with a try and a penalty before Warlingham full back Joe McEvoy claimed a penalty of his own. Play became somewhat stunted as handling errors and numerous penalties were awarded against both sides. Speedy winger Alex Skinner cleverly intercepted a wayward Portsmouth pass and scampered forty metres to score under the posts. McEvoy converted. Portsmouth scrambled their third try before the half time whistle but McEvoy responded with his metronomic boot to keep Warlingham in touch. Website: www.mightywarl.com Email: [email protected] Tel:

Jonathan Straker (19 July 1936 - 1 September 2014) St Brides Church off Fleet Street was packed to the gunnels with Jonathan's friends andfamily including a large gathering of Warly friends .  The choir sang lustily (Swing Low, Jerusalem and I Vow to thee my Country - were on the agenda) and amusing anecdotes were told. We all then repaired to Stationers Hall for refreshments where more memories were relived.  Our much loved Past president's bronze bust found itself in two

local pubs followed by the Tapas Bar in Purley - and then returned reverently to his home in South Croydon. RIP Big Man

Some news from our fantastic Youth Section:

U13A Warlingham vs Haslemere report “The best display I have seen by an U13’s team on the first 15 pitch” was the comment by a senior club member, whilst another has told me that “…the lads played a good brand of rugby with forwards working as a pack to secure ball and draw opposition into the breakdown, then releasing the backs to move the ball wide and exploit the space created. Highly commendable and unusual to see team play executed so well at this stage when individual strong runners tend to dominate”. The watching parents were justly proud and excited, as were the (relieved) coaches as our first league outing saw us comprehensively outplay and beat a Haslemere side we had previously lost to last year. The result was called five minutes from the end as we had a 40 point lead (as 50-10) not in any way flattering an impressive team display. After falling behind to an early run away try after a turnover when we were attacking deep in their 22 the team dug in and cemented a huge amount of possession with two scores of our own with Chris Lipzynski storming through but great set up work from the forwards and good hands in the backs. The intensity was great and further scores from Harry Fisher (2), Tom (I will get to the line) Cribbens, Toby Carter and two more from Chris Lip rounded off a performance where the team ethic was very evident, great scrummaging and recycling from the forwards an energetic back row with numerous turnovers and some good running from the backs never let the opposition get any sort of hold in the game. Some of the play would not have disgraced a coaching manual with a line out move in our own 22 leading after several phases involving both wings to a try for Warlingham at the opposite end of the pitch. Certainly we could make a few improvements with drawing an opponent and there were numerous instances when we perhaps a pass should have been given but wasn’t but all in all an impressive display and one which I hope will give the boys belief in their ability.

U13B Warlingham vs Camberley report We arrived at Camberley with only 15 fit players, two having pulled out at the last minute due to sickness, and we knew we also had to lose two at half time who had to leave early so we always going to be up against it. However, you wouldn’t have known as right from the start we dominated both territory and possession, playing a lot of the rugby in their half. Our forwards rucked superbly, winning possession time after time and so it wasn’t a surprise that we took an early lead when Joel Munroe crashed over the line after a series of drives. Caelen Thomas converted to give us a 7-0 lead. Soon after the re-start we came under pressure at a scrum and then conceded an unlucky try when one of their players played a ball that had been kicked forward by a team mate but was surprisingly not adjudged offside. So it was 7-7. We then came under the cosh for quite a bit as although we won plenty more ball, with David Stevenson taking several hooks against the head and the forwards still rucking effectively and carrying the ball well, we simply could not compete with their pace on the wide outside and they ran in 3 tries by simply outflanking us and scorching down the wings. We therefore went into half time 7-28 down. With two Camberley players helping us out we started the second half well, with several strong runs from Matt Barnett, Lucas Bibb (who gave a huge performance playing up a year from the U12’s), Joel and AJ. Lucas made another strong run and David Stevenson then scored from a penalty after we exerted lots of pressure. They managed another score by outflanking us through pure pace, but we then scored again through a bullocking run by Lucas to get the score to 17-35. Yet again we rucked and recycled, with James Blain, Matt Barnett, Christian and Joel all standing out. As the game drew to a close we won a succession of penalties in their 22 and were only 5m from their line with yet another penalty when the game had to be called off early due to a nasty ankle injury for Matt Barnett. I suspect we’d have scored another try if the last 2 minutes had been played. So we finished with a 17-35 loss, but we won the second half 10-7 and really dominated the game up front despite being short of some forwards. It was a great team effort and one they boys should be proud of. We need to learn how to shut down teams with real pace and we must also work on our tackling, as a couple of their tries could have been stopped, and passing the ball a bit earlier, but that apart it was a commendable performance. Well done all.

Super 9ers - Sunday 16th Nov - entertaining East Grinstead.

A grey but mild and dry day at the home of mini rugby. Under 9s began the morning with lots of fun for the kids as they valet parked the 4x4 of the parents and crowd, luckily not too much damage was done and there was not much road rage. Warlingham Super9ers have now attracted plenty of talent and we have now absorbed the Old Cats under 9s to or ranks. This stemmed from our early minis Ockoberfest and now they all want to play at WRFC.

Page 6: N€¦  · Web viewSpeedy winger Alex Skinner cleverly intercepted a wayward Portsmouth pass and scampered forty metres to score ... to thee my Country - were on ... have a word

A good turn out with approx 36 from the super 9ers and 16 from EG. Thanks to the coaches and also to the crowd which was much bigger than most 1st XV games.

Plenty of fun for the kids with games and also 5 skills clinics on the go. Stuarts Tackle O'meter was the favourite and we saw some great hits. E Grinstead enjoyed themselves and you could see in their coaches eyes a little jealousy about our slick and well run show.

Down to the game which can sometimes have a bit of an edge, but on the day there were only a few high tackles and swinging boots from E.Grinstead. Ned was strong and courageous as ever and took a few high tackles but brushed himself off and went in for some more. Well done Ned. Strong running from Ben H / Thomas H and Quinn saw us tip the balance and we won the final mini game 4 / 2.

In the other game Logan was reported to have scores 8 of the 9 tries that were put past a combined EG and Warlingham 7. Think that dad needs to have a word about stealing things Logan - especially the ball and the glory - but well done. Otherwise strong running by Aidan saw him pick up the player of the week tankard. Also well done to Euan who on his first day in a blue and white shirt instead of old Cats impressed for the effort of the week. And also young Logan who took away the spoils with his near triple hat trick for best tries of the game. He was hard pushed by Quinn and Thomas Higgins for the coveted sugar bowl.

Well done allThanks to the coachesNext week on the road to take on Old Emanuel.

Heard at The Bar- The President of Warlingham RFC, Mr P H H Coghlan, reluctantly disclosed that The First Lady was 'very wobbly' in Spain last month.  He would not elaborate as to why she was in this state and we leave you to decide the affliction she suffered.

- The President also commented that he liked the look of Mrs Mattison's 'little blower.'  We couldn't possibly comment.. - Whilst purchasing ale at the PJF bar on Saturday (bereft of PJF members) the President was approached by a player wearing PJF kit,  (having been substituted at half time.) PJF player to PHHC:- - "Excuse me do you know where the changing rooms are!"  ? - Members will have read of Mr Anthony Barrington Doe's exposure in numerous daily newspapers last week relating to his 'Unsung Hero Award' and visit to Penny Hill Park.  One of the red tops, the Sun, carried the story.  Mr Doe was heard to say on Saturday evening, " I hope the Sun's not tapping my phone...." N.B.(If you hear any scandalous gossip during the week please pass it on to [email protected] - we cannotpromise to publish all tit bits but some will be passed on....)
