EDITORIALEDITORIAL BY THE SECRETARY GENERAL

“The World Conference on Animal Production is being held at a critical time in man’s history. It is a time marked

by a very rapid extension of scientific knowledge, and by rising expectation of people in less developed areas on

the one hand, and on the other hand, by rapidly rising populations, overcrowding of the land in many areas, and

NEWS FROM EAAPPhilippe Chemineau new President of WAAP and Lyon hosting 2023 WCAP

Few weeks ago, July 5th to 8th 2018, the World Conference of Animal Production was held in Vancouver Canada. EAAP was able to achieve two important goals during this meeting, the new President of the organization, the World Association for Animal Production (www.waap.it), is the past EAAP President: Philippe Chemineau. We all had the opportunity to appreciate the quality and dedication of Philippe when he had been EAAP President. During his presidency EAAP reached many objectives: growing the participation to the annual meeting, increasing quantity and quality of provided services, doubling the amount of financial reserves, etc. and we are sure that WAAP will also benefit by having elected Philippe as President for next five years. Moreover, the location of the next location of the World Conference of Animal Production was selected during the same General Assembly of WAAP. There were two strong proposals, Melbourne (Australia) put forward by the Australian Society of Animal Production and Lyon (France) put forward by EAAP. We are pleased to inform you that the General Assembly of WAAP voted for the EAAP proposal. This means that in 2023 the EAAP meeting in Lyon will be organized in cooperation with the World Conference for Animal Production. Double success for our delegation! Furthermore during the same meeting Matthias Gauly was elected as Council member of WAAP, representing Europe.

EAAP Working Group Livestock Farming in Mountain Areas

The 1st European Symposium on Livestock Farming in Mountain Areas (held the 20th-22th June in Bolzano) gave EAAP the opportunity to develop a Working group about Livestock Farming in Mountain Areas. The Convenor of the WG is Prof. Giulio Cozzi (M), full professor in dairy and beef cattle production at the Padova University. His research focuses on intensive and extensive beef and dairy cattle production systems in Southern Europe assessing

the effects of various production factors (feeding, breeding, housing etc.) on cattle health, welfare and performance. He has a large experience in the gathering and harmonizing of large cattle datasets from different European countries. If you are interested to join the Working Group please write to [email protected] up to date on the website.

EAAP is looking for a motivated person to interact with industries

EAAP is constantly strengthening the cooperation with industries on several levels. Therefore, we are looking for motivated persons to broaden the staff dedicated to interacting with industries for:

1. Increasing the cooperation between industries and EAAP and animal scientists,

2. Supporting the inclusion of industries in EU supported projects,

3. Organizing Academy Workshops (organized jointly by EAAP and a dedicated industry),

4. Sponsoring activities and much more.

The endeavours are paid accordingly with the obtained results. If you are interested please send an email to [email protected], more details will be given. If you are not directly interested but you know someone who could be, please show him/her this offer.

FEFAC convinced EU to adapt copper reduction plans

Reducing copper levels for pigs to 25 mg/kg for all age groups, as suggested in an FEEDAP Panel Opinion from 2016 is not realistic. But fortunately, the European Commission listened to the feed industry experts from FEFAC, who proposed a more realistic plan, taking both the environment and animal performance and health into consideration. All About Feed talked to FEFAC Animal Nutrition Committee expert Erik Dam Jensen about what it entails. Read the full article on AllAboutFeed.

iSAGE project – Summer School

Last May, the iSAGE project - funded by Horizon 2020 – held a 3-day summer school in Zaragoza, Spain. The course provided postgraduate students and early scientists with an overview of main areas of research and innovation in sheep and goats in Europe, widening their comprehension on the aspects in which science is contributing to the sustainability of the small ruminant sector. Lectures, open discussions with experts and industry stakeholders, and a field visit to a real example of an innovative production system enriched their understanding on the actual stakes and challenges to which the sector is confronted and on how science and innovations can help the industry to cope with them.
