EDITORIALEDITORIAL BY THE SECRETARY GENERAL

Animal Science has been divided into a distinct number of more or less separate disciplines ranging from

genetics and physiology to nutrition and farming systems. This division has been naturally based on the different

aspects of our interests, material and living environment under study. In all disciplines we can clearly define

‘core’ subjects that fall into the traditional categories without any overlap with other fields. However, there is an

increasing amount of research taking place at the interface or overlap between disciplines. For a researcher,

trained in one of the traditional disciplines of animal science, it can be hard to look beyond the boundaries

and spot opportunities for cross-disciplinary research. Also within each discipline there are sub-specializations to

come to grips with. Nevertheless there are many advantages to working with a multidisciplinary outlook. One

of them is the possibility that the approach and the knowledge developed in one field can be novel in another

field. Applying this acquired knowledge in new fields can give ground-breaking advantage and a unique

angle for solving outstanding problems. Single-disciplines can become very crowded with specialists and the

number of distinct topics to be studied is limited.

Participation in EAAP Annual Meetings has two distinct advantages; the possibility to keep up with the latest

research and meet relevant scientists from one’s own discipline but also to have the chance to get involved in

other animal science disciplines and therefore to get the best out of a multidisciplinary approach. Participating

in multidisciplinary animal science meetings does not necessary mean leaving behind one’s own specialism. On

the contrary, when defining a new scientific direction it is crucial to build on those strengths that constitute an

existing track record. Also when people choose to carry out research in a different area to their own, they can

combine various skills to develop a unique expertise.

A common mistake is to seek out people with the same expertise that scientists already have, which is natural as these are members of a familiar community. The challenge is to find complementary expertise outside one’s comfort zone and team up with new individuals with whom on can work easily.

However, this research attitude requires flexible, open minded and well-prepared scientists who can bridge gaps by combining expertise and skills from different fields.

In order to facilitate cross-disciplinary research, EAAP Annual Meetings encourage interaction between different disciplines by organizing the annual event where scientists can meet and share ideas in an informal setting. The large increase of participants to EAAP annual meetings shows that scientists are aware of the two positive values of such events: to participate in research from their own field but also to follow other animal science disciplines for a positive multidisciplinary outcome.
