United States. He was a poet, short story

writer and a literary critic. Best known for his tales of

He was known for his poems The Bell and The Ravens. His short stories are filled with strange dark concepts like “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Masque of the Red Death.”

Edgar Allan Poe married his 13 year old cousin, Virginia, in 1836. She became tragically ill in 1842 and died in 1847.

“Poe's love for his wife and her death are the subjects of the love poem, "Annabel Lee." There are debates over whom, if anyone was the inspiration for "Annabel Lee". Though many women have been suggested, Poe's wife Virginia Eliza Clemm Poe is one of the more credible candidates. “Annabel Lee" was first printed by the New York Daily Tribune on October 9, 1849, two days after Poe's death”.

Annabel LeeBY EDGAR ALLAN POE

It was many and many a year ago,In a kingdom by the sea,

That a maiden there lived whom you may know

By the name of Annabel Lee;And this maiden she lived with no

other thoughtThan to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,In this kingdom by the sea,

But we loved with a love that was more than love—

I and my Annabel Lee—With a love that the wingèd seraphs

of HeavenCoveted her and me.

Page 7: My Demo Demo

And this was the reason that, long ago,

In this kingdom by the sea,A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling

My beautiful Annabel Lee;So that her highborn kinsmen came

And bore her away from me,To shut her up in a sepulchreIn this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in Heaven,

Went envying her and me—Yes!—that was the reason (as all

men know,In this kingdom by the sea)

That the wind came out of the cloud by night,

Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love

Of those who were older than we—Of many far wiser than we—

And neither the angels in Heaven above

Nor the demons down under the seaCan ever dissever my soul from the

soulOf the beautiful Annabel Lee;

For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams

Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;And the stars never rise, but I feel

the bright eyesOf the beautiful Annabel Lee;

And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side

Of my darling—my darling—my life and my bride,

In her sepulchre there by the sea—In her tomb by the sounding sea.

Post Reading:

“The speaker states that it happened long time ago in a kingdom by the sea.”

“It was titled Annabel Lee because the poem is all about her. She’s the subject of the poem.”

Page 8: My Demo Demo

“How do you find the poem?”

“How about the setting of the poem?”

“Yes! He maybe lets us know that Kingdom by the sea is the setting of the story, or it can be the mood of the story. When we say Kingdom by the sea we can think of it is a beautiful place where the speaker and Annabel Lee lives.

“How about the title? What can you say about the title? Why do you think is Annabel Lee is the title of the poem?”

“Yes because the poem revolves around her. She’s the reason why the poem exists.”

“For us to have a deeper analysis or understanding with the poem I want you to group yourselves into six.”

“Group one is assigned to explain the first stanza, group two is for the second stanza, group three is for the third stanza and so on.”

“Each group will choose a representative to present your explanation about the poem.”

“I’m giving you 3minutes to analyse or understand the poem and each member should share ideas and should cooperate with their group.”

“Group one please read the first stanza.”

“It was many and many a year ago,

In a kingdom by the sea,That a maiden there lived whom

you may knowBy the name of Annabel Lee;

And this maiden she lived with no other thought

Than to love and be loved by me.”

“The speaker is describing Annabel Lee in this stanza, which let us know that she is beautiful.”

The speaker lets us know that He and Annabel Lee were deeply in love with each other.”

“I was a child and she was a child,In this kingdom by the sea,

But we loved with a love that was more than love—

I and my Annabel Lee—

Page 9: My Demo Demo

“Karen please read your work ”

“Who can give another explanation?’

“Yes Monette”

“Yes! Very good! The speaker introduces Annabel Lee in this stanza by calling her a Maiden, which lets us know she is young and probably attractive.”

“Yes! the last two lines tell us the key fact of the poem, which is that he and Annabel Lee were in love, so much in love that it was the only thing that mattered to them”

“ Group two read the next stanza?”

“Raven read your group work”

With a love that the wingèd seraphs of Heaven

Coveted her and me.”

“In this stanza the speaker lets us know that both of them were young when it happened or when they started loving each other.”

“This stanza let us know how intense and special their love was, even though they were both so young.”

“It means that even the angels were jealous with them.”

“Yes Ma’am”

“And this was the reason that, long ago,

In this kingdom by the sea,A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling

My beautiful Annabel Lee;So that her highborn kinsmen

cameAnd bore her away from me,To shut her up in a sepulchreIn this kingdom by the sea.”

Page 10: My Demo Demo

“Another explanation?”

“Yes Joshua”

“Yes! This stanza tells us that their love for each other was intense and special even though they were both so young.”

“What about the line “even the winged seraphs of heaven coveted them,”? Who can explain?”

“Yes Derryck”

“Yes! It can be explained that their love was apparently so amazingly strong that even angels from heaven noticed them. It’s our first hint that things might not turn out so well for the two, right? ”

“Agree class?”

“Group three read the 3rd stanza.”

“Ella read your group work”

“Yes! In the first four lines of this stanza, here’s where things really take a turn for the worse. The speaker blames the terrible turn of events on the angels. He states that

“The speaker blames the Angels why Annabel got sick. They were the reason why a wind came made Annabel Lee sick

“In the next four lines, the speaker tells us how Annabel Lee’s kinsman came and took her away from him. It gives us idea that Annabel Lee died.”

“Yes Ma’am”

“The angels, not half so happy in Heaven,

Went envying her and me—Yes!—that was the reason (as all

men know,In this kingdom by the sea)

That the wind came out of the cloud by night,

Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.”

“The speaker turns back and blames the Angels for killing his Annabel Lee. From the lines of this

Page 11: My Demo Demo

the jealousy of the angels was the reason why a wind came down. It can be explained that Annabel got sick because of the word chilling.

“Another idea?”

“Yes Enrico”

“Yes! The speaker tells us how Annabel Lee’s relatives came and took her away from him. It gives us a little hint of a conflict between Annabel Lee’s family and him. Whatever is going on, you can still feel the pain of losing Annabel and he feels that she is being stolen from him by taking away her away.

“Agree?”

“Group four read the fourth stanza”

“Jed read your group work”

“Yes, the speaker circles back a little bit, and directly blames the angels for Annabel’s death. He lets us know that He and Annabel were happier on earth than the angels in heaven and that’s why they killed Annabel Lee.

stanza, he let us know that He and Annabel were happy and that made the angels jealous and killed Annabel Lee.”

“The speaker tells us that all men who live in the kingdom witnessed the jealousy of the angels.

“But our love it was stronger by far than the loveOf those who were older than we—

Of many far wiser than we—And neither the angels in Heaven

aboveNor the demons down under the

seaCan ever dissever my soul from

the soulOf the beautiful Annabel Lee;”

“The speaker lets us know that Nothing in this world can stop them in loving each other. Neither the angels nor demons can disunite them.

Page 12: My Demo Demo

“What can you notice in the third line?”

“Yes Kenneth”

“Yes, the speaker is extra careful to point out that this isn’t just his theory, but in fact everyone (all men) who lives in the kingdom knows that it is a fact. He just repeats what he said in previous stanzas, right? This stanza shows us how traumatic it was for him, right?”

“Group five read the next stanza”

“Keno read your group work”

“Yes! Even if death seems to be the end of love, the speaker tells that isn’t the case for him and Annabel Lee. Even though they were young, that’s not the reason for them to stop loving each other. Nothing in heaven or hell can dissever their souls.

“Agree?”

“Group six read the next stanza.”

“Yes Ma’am”

“For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreamsOf the beautiful Annabel Lee;

And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes

Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;And so, all the night-tide, I lie

down by the sideOf my darling—my darling—my life

and my bride,In her sepulchre there by the sea—In her tomb by the sounding sea.”

“He tells us that the love between him and Annabel Lee isn’t dead.”

“The speaker always thinks of Annabel Lee. He always sees and dreams of Annabel Lee.

“He still believes that they will be united again in his death. He goes and lies down with her in her tomb every night.

Page 13: My Demo Demo

“Stella read your group work.”

“Yes, very good! He tells us that the love between him and Annabel Lee eternal. (At least in the mind of the speaker).

“Who can explain the first two lines?”

“Yes Troy!”

From the first two lines, it can be explained that he always thinks of Annabel Lee even in his dreams, he sees Annabel Lee.

“Another explanation?”

“Yes John”

“Yes! This stanza explains that Annabel Lee is dead but not gone for the speaker. He still believes that they will be united again in his death. It seems that he’s just waiting for his death or he’s ready to die just to see Annabel Lee again, right? “

“Agree?”

“Who wants to add more ideas or explanations in this last stanza?

“Yes Ma’am!”

None.

“He’s a loving man but sad at the same time. He shows everyone how deeply in love he is with Annabel Lee.”

“She’s young and beautiful. She’s the great love of the persona in the poem.”

“The Persona shows an intense love for Annabel Lee.

Page 14: My Demo Demo

“Who can describe the Persona in the poem? Describe him.”

“Yes Raven”

“Yes! Very good! He’s a loving Man who got obsessed with his love. “

“Who is Annabel Lee? Describe her.”

“Yes Keno”

“Yes, the persona of the poem described her as a Maiden, young and beautiful and probably an attractive one. She’s the author’s great love.”

“Who can describe the love of the persona for Annabel Lee?

“Yes Stella”

“Yes, the persona has a great and deep love for Annabel Lee, he shows intense love for her that even after death he still believes that they will be reunited and can continue their love.

“What do you think is the theme of the story? A while ago, we learned that theme is the central subject or topic of a poem.”

“Yes Kerbie”

“Yes, it’s about eternal love and death. The persona shows undying love from the start until the end.”

“I think the theme of the poem is eternal love.”

“To sum up the poem, "Annabel Lee" is about a beautiful, painful memory. The speaker of the poem is remembering his long-lost love, Annabel Lee.”

“So in love that even the angels in heaven noticed and were jealous and killed Annabel Lee.”

“Her relatives came and took her away from the speaker and put her in sepulchre.”

“Our speaker wants us to know that his love for Annabel Lee was infinite and unexplainable. A thing like death isn't going to separate him from Annabel Lee. Not even angels or devils could do that. He still sees her in his dreams. In fact he still loves her so much (here's

E. Generalization

“To sum up the poem class, what is the poem all about?

“Yes Mark”

“Yes Very good! The speaker knew Annabel Lee many years ago. Even though they were young, these two were really, seriously in love.

“How intense their love was?”

“Yes Keno”

“Who took away Annabel Lee from the persona of the poem? And what happened next?”

“Yes Stella”

“What does the speaker want us to know?”

“Did you enjoy the poem?”
