The Renaissance was the period when Bulgarians gathered spiritual and intel-lectual strength to establish their right for independent political and social life, for own culture and education. The figures of the Bulgarian Renaissance, most of them educated abroad, naturally arrived at the idea of opening a higher educational in-stitution, which “to make Bulgarians equal to the other nations that are politically independent, culturally developed and with established citizenship”. This led to the creation in 1888 of the first Bulgarian university. 121 years later a dense network of universities is covering the whole country, offering quality education in all fields of knowledge.

In the current guide you will find useful information about Bulgarian universi-ties and the cities they are situated in.

We hope that this will be the starting trigger of your motivation to have a study period in Bulgaria!!!

BoTEVGRAD Botevgrad is located 60 km from the capital of Bulgaria, Sofia. Botevgrad

is strategically located at a crossroad with connections with eastern and northern Bulgaria. The airport is located 50 km from the town and 30 km from the nearest train station. Botevgrad and its hinterland are situated in a unique and picturesque valley, located 350 m above sea level with a total area of 506.6 sq km.

The first historical data regarding the settlement in the region of Botev-grad dates back to the 1st-3rd century. Traces of Roman and Thraecian arti-facts suggest a Greek past, which, until now, remained a great mystery. Dur-ing medieval centuries, a settlement arose with the name “Zelin” which was found 3 km south of the present day location of the city. The last stronghold of the 2nd Bulgarian kingdom was found not far from Botevgrad-“Stronghold Urvitch”, in which the only preserved medieval Bulgarian inscription devot-ed to the last battle of the czar Ivan Shishman exists. After the liberation, the city increased and from 01.12.1934, the city was renamed to Botevgrad in respect to the great Bulgarian revolutionary - Hristo Botev.

Too many French do not know anything about Bulgaria, which is regrettable. But it was maybe one of the reasons that encourage me to discover this country. I come from the Lumieres university in Lyon. I could have chosen England, Malta, Spain or Italy. But I wanted something new, an original country with preserved culture and tradition far from the French ones. I found it in Bulgaria.”
