It is now recognised that 87% of CBHS Lewisham students have a Language Background Other Than English (LBOTE) and that in most cases the parents of our students are unable to assist

with their education. Therefore, any Literacy program would need to be accessible to all of

these students as well as other students with low literacy.

LEWISHAM NEEDS A LITERACY PROGRAM FOR ALL STUDENTS

Improved Literacy will lead to improved exam results .

The Literacy Program

• Started in Yr 7 in 2002; Yr 8 in 2003; Yr 9 in 2005; Yr 10 in 2006

• Delivered in English classes• Yr 7 – 10 has 6 or 7 streams of English• One period per week is dedicated to literacy

classes in Yrs 7 & 8– classes are divided into 3 literacy groups, according

to ability – based on NAPLAN results

• One period per week is dedicated to literacy classes in Yrs 9 & 10– classes are split into two groups, arranged so that

students work well together.

The Comprehension Program

• Moodle is used as a teaching tool by English teachers to help students improve their comprehension skills.

• Previous ELLA and NAPLAN articles are able to be viewed on computers, multiple choice questions are asked based on these articles

• Moodle allows the order of the questions and answers to be varied from student to student – copying is not possible

Reasons for Improvements

• Raising the profile of literacy across the school – the Principal giving Literacy awards at a Year meeting

• Whole staff support (hopefully)• Small groups• Groups in ability levels• Program designed specifically
