4 Secondary schools in Lewisham 2015–16

Starting secondary school is an important milestone in your child’s life and you will want to be sure that you find the right school for them. This booklet has been designed to help you through the process, so that you are able to make well-informed decisions about applying for schools.

In Lewisham, we are ambitious for all our children and young people and we have the very highest aspirations for their achievement at school. Schools in Lewisham have facilities which are second to none; they are vibrant and stimulating; and they have dedicated and skilled staff and headteachers.

The quality of education in schools in Lewisham is high and continues to improve. There are very strong relationships between primary and secondary schools which ensures a child’s transition is smooth and successful.

Every secondary school in Lewisham offers a broad and balanced curriculum that will engage and inspire students, as well as provide flexibility to meet the needs of all students across the ability range. Each year more students are getting A* and A grades at GCSE and A-level and more are getting places at top universities.

In this booklet, each secondary school headteacher gives a flavour of their school, highlighting their ethos and values and the many opportunities available to your child. You can find out more about each school on their websites.

You will find important advice in this booklet about how to make your applications and we encourage you to read it carefully. In particular, you should make use of the school open days which are listed on page 8. You should visit as many schools as you can to see for yourself the fantastic opportunities they have to offer.

Lewisham has very popular and oversubscribed schools so it is important that you fully understand the application process and make informed choices based on the admissions criteria set out for each school. You can apply for up to six schools, either in Lewisham or in another borough, but please remember to be realistic when making your preferences, as most decisions rely on how far you live from the school. We particularly recommend that you visit and apply to your most local school. Your local headteachers will be happy to talk with you and answer any questions you may have.

We also recommend that you apply online via www.eadmissions.org.uk.

We know that your child will flourish and be successful in any secondary school in Lewisham and we wish them every success as they start this new chapter in their education.

Lewisham Council is an outstanding authorityOfsted rates Lewisham Council as outstanding with ‘highly ambitious and energetic leadership’ (Ofsted 2012). They also found that children’s services in the borough perform excellently. Lewisham was one of only five authorities to receive the grade of ‘outstanding’.

In 2013 the number of Lewisham students achieving five or more GCSEs at grades A*–C (including English and mathematics) continued to rise, with a number of schools reporting their best ever results.

Every year an increasing number of students are getting A* and A grades at GCSE and A-level and more Lewisham students are getting places at top universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, Durham and the London School of Economics.

This provides students with opportunities to learn from leading thinkers in a variety of disciplines such as medicine, mathematics, chemical engineering, philosophy, law and politics.

Why choose Lewisham

7Apply online at www.eadmissions.org.uk

The first step is to decide which schools you would like to apply for. You can apply for up to six schools. Not all children can be offered their first preference school so you should find out about several schools.

We strongly recommend that you look at your nearest school. Most schools in Lewisham are oversubscribed. It is therefore important that you include your nearest school as one of your preferences.

Visiting schoolsAll schools hold open days so you can visit them with your child. See page 8 for details of open days. Visiting schools is important because it gives you a chance to look around. You’ll get a feel of the facilities and what each school offers, and have a chance to talk to headteachers, teachers and students too. You can read schools’ prospectuses and websites, but nothing replaces an actual visit. Because schools in Lewisham and their facilities have changed and improved in so many ways over the last few years, it is particularly important that you see schools for yourself rather than relying on outdated reputations.

Admissions criteriaYou should use the admissions criteria to find out whether or not your child has a good chance of being offered a place at the schools you like.

When there are more applicants for a school than places available, the school’s admissions criteria will be applied to decide who should be offered a place. Therefore it is essential that you consider whether or not your child is likely to be offered a place before making your application.

The most common criterion used is the distance from your home to the school, so we recommend that you name your nearest school as one of your preferences. Most secondary schools in Lewisham also give priority to a child with a brother or sister at the school, and others give preference to pupils of a particular faith.

You can read all the criteria for schools in Lewisham on pages 33–42. To find out about admissions criteria for schools outside Lewisham, you will need to look at secondary school booklets and websites from those areas.

BandingThe Council uses a banding system to make sure that the majority of secondary schools in Lewisham have a good mix of students of different abilities. For most schools in Lewisham, we will place your child in one of five bands (1A, 1B, 2A, 2B and 3) based on their ability, usually based on tests taken in Year 5. At each school, 20% of the places are allocated to students from each band.

The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation and Prendergast Hilly Fields College use their own banding systems. The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation assesses students using its own test, which takes place after you have made your applications. It has more bands but still admits an even proportion of children across the school. Prendergast Hilly Fields College will use Lewisham Council’s banding system but the proportion of places available will be determined by the proportion of applicants in each band of ability. This is known as school based banding.

Contact the relevant schools for more information.

9Apply online at www.eadmissions.org.uk

Apply online at www.eadmissions.org.ukYou can apply for up to six schools, which you list in order of preference. The schools can be in Lewisham or outside the borough.

It is very important that you think carefully about the order in which you state your preferences because your child will only be offered a place at one school.

The place you will be offered is the school that is ranked highest on your preference list that is able to offer a place according to its admissions criteria.

If no school on your list of preferences is able to offer a place, you will be offered a place at the nearest available school in Lewisham that has vacancies.

The final deadline for applications is Friday 31 October 2014, but we recommend that you submit your application by Friday 24 October 2014.

If you cannot apply online, you can apply on a paper form, which you can pick up from Laurence House in Catford. You cannot apply both online and on paper. If you do so, we will only record the online application. The paper application will be null and void.

How the admissions scheme worksThe coordinated admissions scheme is designed so that children are made one offer of a school place on national offer day (2 March 2015). The offer may be one of the schools named on your application or, if your child does not qualify for a place at any of the schools applied for, another school in Lewisham where there is a vacancy.

You may apply for up to six maintained schools (not special schools or independent schools) on one application. You are required to rank each school in order of preference. Each school preference will be considered by the admissions authority for that school independently and a decision made on whether or not your child qualifies for a place at the school. Where an applicant can be offered more than

one school applied for, Lewisham Council will use the applicant’s ranking to determine which possible offer has been named the highest.

Please note that the order of your preferences will not be passed to schools.

Applying onlineYou should apply online because:

• it is quick and easy• your child’s details are safe and secure• you will get a confirmation email after you

have submitted your application• you can change your preferences any time

up to 11.59pm on 31 October 2014 • you will get your offer by email during the

evening of 2 March 2015, whereas if you apply on paper you will get a letter which will arrive later.

How to apply

Applying online

Applying online is secure, fast and convenient. To apply online you need to register at www.eadmissions.org.uk and create a password. This takes a few minutes and can be done any time from 1 September 2014.

To apply online:1. Register at www.eadmissions.org.uk any time

from 1 September 2014.2. Fill in and submit the online application form

before 11.59pm on 31 October 2014.• If you are providing additional documentation

to support your application, please scan and upload it with your application. If you cannot do this, please email, post or bring the information to the Admissions and Appeals Team at Laurence House in Catford (contact details on page 13).

• If you are applying for a school that needs a supplementary information form, please get the form from the school and return it to the school before 31 October 2014. Do not send it to the Council.

3. After you submit your application you will get an email with a reference number that looks like this: 209-2015-09-E-001234. If you do not get an email with a reference number, it means your form has not been submitted.

You are not asked to include your child’s banding when you apply online. We will collect this information from your child’s primary school.

For technical help with online applications or if you forget your password, contact the London Grid for Learning on:Email: [email protected]: 020 8255 5555 (select option 4)

Applying on paperWe recommend that you apply online if possible. However, if you are unable to do this you can apply using Lewisham Council’s common application form, as long as you are a Lewisham resident. You can collect a copy from Laurence House, Catford Road, Catford.

Please return the form to the Admissions and Appeals Team (see contact details on page 13). If you hand-deliver the form to Laurence House, you will be given a receipt.

If you send the form in the post, make sure you put the correct postage on the envelope. If you are using a large envelope, you must use a special ‘large envelope’ stamp, or Royal Mail will not deliver your form. You should also get a free certificate of posting from the post office and keep

this safe, along with a photocopy of the form, in case we do not receive it.

Filling in the application form online or on paperHere are some tips that will help you make your application. You will be asked for the same information whether you apply online or on paper, but the questions might be presented in a different order.

For further help filling in your application please ask your primary school headteacher or call the Admissions and Appeals Team at the Council on 020 8314 8282.

Your child’s details Make sure you correctly spell your child’s name and provide your child’s permanent home address, which must be in the borough of Lewisham. The child’s name must be exactly the same as on their birth certificate, unless it has been legally changed, in which case a copy of the legal document must be provided.

If you move at any time during the application process, you must let the Admissions and Appeals Team know immediately. Please provide written evidence of your new address, such as a copy of your new tenancy agreement or a solicitor’s letter confirming completion of a house purchase.

• If you move before 12 December 2014, we will use your new permanent home address to work out your offer or you can make a new application.

• If you move after 12 December 2014 but before 2 March 2015, your offer will be based on your previous permanent home address.

The address you give must be the child’s permanent home address, not a temporary address or one that you have rented in order to increase your child’s chances of getting into a particular school. We will check the address you give against our records and may ask you for evidence that this is the child’s permanent home address. We will withdraw an offer of a place if you provide false information.

Your details Only give the name(s) of parents/carers who live

Page 11: Secondary schools in Lewisham 2015-16 Secondary schools in Lewisham 2015–16 Lewisham Council is an outstanding authority Ofsted rates Lewisham Council as outstanding with ‘highly

11Apply online at www.eadmissions.org.uk

at the same address as the child. If your child is not at a primary school in Lewisham, please provide evidence with your application that you have parental responsibility for the child and are therefore eligible to make an application, as well as evidence that you permanently live at the address you have applied from. These could include:

• your current council tax statement or a tenancy agreement

• a letter from the Child Benefit Agency showing both your name and your child’s name to show that you are in receipt of benefits for the child

• residence orders (or other court orders) if relevant• the child’s full birth certificate.

If parents who are not living together share the care of their child, we will normally accept that the child lives with the parent who has parental responsibility and is receiving child benefit and child tax credit. We may ask for evidence of this.

Order of preferences Your child will only be offered one place so it is very important that you think carefully about the order in which you list the schools you are applying for. You are not guaranteed a place at one of the schools you apply for and we strongly recommend that you list your most local school as one of your preferences. Do not list any school that you would not accept if it is offered.

Name of school and DfE numberPlease make sure you enter the correct school name. This is particularly important because some schools work in federation and will have similar names e.g. Prendergast schools in Lewisham and Harris acadamies in other boroughs. If you are applying on a paper form, also give the school’s unique DfE number (see pages 14–27).

If you are applying to schools outside Lewisham, please get the DfE number from that school or the council for that area. The DfE number will clearly identify which school you are applying for.

Supporting evidenceIn some situations, we need to see further evidence that your child meets the admissions criteria. These include:

• a letter from a hospital consultant demonstrating

that the school you have applied for is the only one which can meet the child or the family’s specific needs if you are applying on medical grounds

• a letter from a social worker demonstrating the same if you are applying on social grounds or the child is in public care

• the adoption order for a child who has been adopted (see below for more information about when we can give priority to adopted children).

You must tick the box for every school for which you are providing supporting evidence. Note that in Lewisham, only Prendergast Hilly Fields College and Prendergast Vale College give priority to children of staff, and schools outside Lewisham may or may not do so. Please check the admissions criteria for the school(s) you are applying for. A child of UK service personnel may qualify for priority and proof of this will be needed. Either upload your documents with your online application or email or send them to [email protected]. If you are applying on paper, attach them to your application form.

Children in public care or adopted from public care These children get priority and should get their first preference of school. If the child is in public care, or has been adopted and was in care in England or Wales immediately beforehand, the allocated social worker must provide a statement about the child’s legal status. If the child is adopted, please provide the adoption order with your application.

For advice on the application process, carers should contact the Admissions and Appeals Team at the Council on 020 8314 8282.

Check your applicationPlease note that we will carry out checks on the information you have provided. If we find that false information has been used to gain admission to a school, the offer of a place will be withdrawn.

Please note that you are entirely responsible for submitting your application and any supplementary forms on time. Lewisham Council accepts no responsibility for applications that are received late. The best way to make sure your application is received on time is to apply online before 31 October 2014.

Supplementary information formsPlease note that supplementary information forms must be returned direct to the schools, not to Lewisham Council.

Some schools need to collect information that is not included in the application form. They will use this information to see if students meet their admissions criteria: for example, a faith school will ask for evidence of church attendance.

The following schools in Lewisham require supplementary information forms:

• Bonus Pastor Catholic College • Haberdashers’ Aske’s Hatcham College • Haberdashers’ Aske’s Knights Academy • Prendergast Hilly Fields College • St Matthew Academy • Trinity Lewisham Church of England School.

You should get supplementary information forms from the school in question or from the school’s website and return the form direct to the school by Friday 31 October 2014.

Applying to an independent schoolIndependent schools are not included in the arrangements described in this booklet. Instead, you need to apply directly to the school.

Late applicationsIf you move into Lewisham after the closing date of 31 October 2014 you can still apply for a school place until 10am on 12 December 2014. You will need to include evidence of the move, such as a tenancy agreement or confirmation of house purchase which includes the date of the move.

If you are thinking of moving to Lewisham but have not yet confirmed the date, you can apply for Lewisham schools using the common application form provided by your current local authority.

If you apply after 10am on 12 December 2014 we will not consider your application until after 2 March 2015.

Early transferIn very exceptional circumstances, Lewisham Council will consider a request for an early transfer for a

younger child (born between 1 September 2004 and 31 August 2005) providing that:

• the application is supported by the child’s primary school headteacher and an educational psychologist, confirming that the child is academically outstanding and sufficiently physically and emotionally mature to cope with the demands of secondary school

• the parent agrees in writing that their child will transfer to secondary school with the older cohort, regardless of the outcome of their applications, and will not be able to apply the following year.

Parents must consider the implications of an early transfer. From 2015, students will be required to stay in learning or training until at least their 18th birthday.

Later transfer In very exceptional circumstances, Lewisham Council will consider a request for a transfer for a child born between 1 September 2002 and 31 August 2003 providing that:

• the application is supported by the child’s primary headteacher and an educational psychologist confirming, for example, the child has learning delay or difficulty and their social maturity is well below that of their peers, or that the child has missed part of a year due to ill health

• the parent agrees in writing that their child will transfer to secondary school with the younger cohort regardless of the outcome of their applications and has not participated in the transfer scheme the year before.

In cases described above, parents must consider the implications of later transfer.

Please note that Lewisham Council’s Admissions and Appeals Team facilitates the transfer arrangements and is unable to influence a school’s decision to accept or decline an application for a child applying out of year group.

13Apply online at www.eadmissions.org.uk

1. Confirmation of applicationIf you have applied online, you will receive an automated confirmation. If you have made a paper application, Lewisham Council will write to you on 21 November 2014 to confirm the schools you have applied for. If you do not receive this letter, please contact the Admissions and Appeals Team as it may mean we have not received your application. If this happens, you will need to provide a photocopy of your application and proof of postage.

2. Your offerIf you applied online, you will receive an email during the evening of 2 March 2015 informing you of your child’s offer of secondary school.

If you applied on paper, your offer will be posted to you first class on 2 March 2015. Please note that first class post does not guarantee next-day delivery and council staff will not be able to give you the result over the telephone.

If you are a Lewisham resident and you cannot be offered a place at any of the schools on your list, we will offer you a place at another school in Lewisham that has a vacancy.

After the application deadline, you will not be allowed to add to or change the order of your preferences.

3. Accepting your offerIf you applied online, please log into your account to accept your offer. You will need your login details and secure password to do this. If you applied on paper, you must return the acceptance slip which will accompany your offer letter.

4. AppealsYou can appeal against any decision not to offer your child a place at a school. Your offer letter will tell you how to get an appeal form. Lewisham Council

will deal with appeals for Lewisham community schools, while schools which are their own admission authority (e.g. faith schools or academies) will deal with their own appeals.

You need to complete the appeal form, stating your case and explaining why you feel your child should have been offered a place at the school. Attach supporting evidence to be considered by the appeal panel.

5. Reallocation lists If you are not offered your first preference school, we will assume that you wish to go on the reallocation list for any schools you named as a higher preference than the school offered, unless you tell us otherwise. Your position on the list will be determined by the school’s admissions criteria and there are separate lists for each band (see page 7 for an explanation of the banding system). If places become available at a school they will be offered to children on the reallocation list. You will not be able to go on reallocation lists for schools which were a lower preference than the school offered.

If you apply to one of the following schools and are not successful, the school will write to you shortly after 2 March 2015 explaining the school’s procedure for appeals and reallocation of places:

• Addey and Stanhope School • Bonus Pastor Catholic College • Haberdashers’ Aske’s Hatcham College • Haberdashers’ Aske’s Knights Academy • Prendergast Hilly Fields College • Prendergast Vale College • St Matthew Academy • Trinity Lewisham Church of England School.

If you move to the area and were not living in the borough at the closing date, your child will be included in a reallocation list, placed in criteria order.

At Addeys we are educating the whole child. Exam results are obviously very important and at Addeys these are outstanding, but we believe education is so much more than that. We value a really broad education which reflects our students’ interests and needs, particularly with a view to their future careers. We are delighted to have opened a new sixth form so our students can learn with us until they go on to university, an apprenticeship or employment. We offer a wide range of visits, trips as well as extracurricular sports and arts activities. Our students take part in book groups, essay-writing and debating competitions as well as bands, sports teams and the annual school play.

The school has a very strong ethos and we value working closely with our families to develop the cultural, social and moral aspects of education. We keep our parents informed when their children are doing well or if there are problems, because we know that if school and families work together closely we will achieve the best for each child.

We are a small school where there are very close relationships between staff and children. Staff work incredibly hard to ensure every child achieves the very best they can. Behaviour is outstanding and our children are happy, secure and enjoy school. We know each child individually and have the highest expectations of them all in terms of behaviour and academic outcomes. As they tell us, we are their second family.

For five consecutive years, Conisborough College students have achieved the school’s best ever results and this year we expect student attainment to reach new heights. Over this period the proportion of students achieving the top grades has more than doubled. Staff, governors, students and their families have worked together to help establish the college as one of the most improved schools in the country. I am extremely proud to be the head of a school where this transformation has taken place.

Our students have access to a fantastic new building with state-of-the-art facilities and are determined to make the very most of the opportunities this huge investment has given them. Students also benefit greatly from the college’s partnership with Colfe’s. Our students are extremely ambitious and this association offers them a clear pathway to a leading independent school and university. The scholarship programme enables our highest achieving students to secure a place in Colfe’s sixth form. Intervention activities in all year groups are designed to support them through this process.

We challenge students to develop into happy, successful young adults who are keen to make a positive contribution to their community. Our students are justifiably proud of the progress that they are making and the part they have played in making their college the outstanding community school in the area.

It is an extremely exciting time to be joining Deptford Green School. Our award-winning new building offers our staff and students the best educational facilities in London. It’s an inspirational environment to be working in and impacts on all aspects of students’ learning.

The school has a team of staff, students and parents who are determined to make the school outstanding across all areas. We celebrated some of our best GCSE exam results in autumn 2013 and the latest data tracking confirms results will rise further in 2014. There is a real passion for learning and a strong commitment to the local community. Students are keen to make a positive contribution as citizens of London whilst pursuing an academic pathway that will lead to the top universities.

We understand the importance of making the transition from primary to secondary as successful as possible. A transition teacher is dedicated to a streamed class group in Year 7 with a maximum of 22 in each class and teaches the students English, literacy, citizenship and humanities. As students have the same teacher for a significant proportion of their timetable they build strong relationships, make quick progress and a bridge is made between primary and secondary approaches to learning.

We expect students to take responsibility for their own learning and to play their part in ensuring that Deptford Green is a vibrant and happy community in which everyone’s learning can flourish.

We are a girls’ comprehensive voluntary-aided school with a co-educational sixth form which has a long history of excellent results at both GCSE and A-levels. In November 2013 we were graded as ‘outstanding’ in all categories by Ofsted. In 2012 we were in the top 10% of non-selective schools in the country based on the percentage of students achieving five or more A*–A grades at GCSE including English and mathematics. Last year we were in the top 100 schools in the country for the progress our students make between primary school and GCSEs for English, maths and three other GCSEs; and 16% of our GCSE students gained 10 or more A/A* grades. We host the sixth form for the Prendergast schools and all Prendergast students have priority places. We have had a 100% pass rate at A2 for many years and our sixth form students go on to a wide range of universities. This academic year approximately 30% of our Year 13 students have gone to the top Russell Group universities. The Minister of State for schools described us as ‘exceptionally effective in educating our pupils.’

However, our school is far more than exams. We pride ourselves on our pastoral care and have very high expectations of all. Our students participate in a very wide range of activities and we expect our students to participate in residential trips from Year 7 to sixth form. We expect our students to be well-behaved, good citizens able to help each other, the local community and themselves. We do hope that you come and visit.

Academic excellence and unrivalled opportunities to develop as confident individuals within a caring Catholic community are the ingredients of our success. We welcome children of all faiths and none.

Our passion is high-quality teaching in every lesson, every day, and we encourage our children to reach for the stars – to develop their ambitions and work hard to achieve them.

Every child is prepared for further education or training, the world of work, being part of society and a lifetime of learning. We maintain strong links with a range of partners including Blackheath High School and the outstanding Christ the King Sixth Form College.

Self-confident, self-disciplined, loving and public spirited individuals, with the skills to thrive in a rapidly changing world, is what a St Matthew Academy education creates.

I encourage you and your child to visit us to find out more.

Sydenham School has been educating girls since 1917. Raising achievement is at the heart of all we do, through our strong educational values, our student-centred staff and our aspirational traditions. Our students receive an excellent educational experience as we are very ambitious for them. Last summer once again we achieved our best ever results at both GCSE and at A-level, above national averages in all key measures. Our 2013 Ofsted report said that we are ‘a good school with outstanding leadership and management. Teachers make lessons enjoyable and challenging.’ The quality of our teaching and learning combined with a strong curriculum means our students can gain academic success and develop into confident, clear-thinking young women with a sense of their responsibility to others and ambition for their own future. As we are a science, technology, engineering and maths school, high numbers of our students take triple science at GCSE and then do A-levels in those subjects. We are strongly committed to developing our students in the visual and physical arts, humanities and in five languages so they can develop the creative skills, critical awareness and confidence to thrive in their future. Our long-term success for students is reflected in that 100% of our sixth form students go on to university or college, over 60% going on to Russell Group or Research Intensive Universities.

Parents are co-educators at Sydenham and their contribution as partners in their children’s learning is highly valued. Together we ensure that the girls learn happily and we ensure accelerated progress for all students.

At Trinity, the smallest secondary school in the borough, we know every child well and they thrive in a friendly, family environment. Ofsted judged us an ‘outstanding’ school in our business enterprise and economic education inspection in 2012.

A Church of England school, we welcome children of all faiths and none. We provide a rich education that celebrates music and the arts, and finds inspiration in beauty.

We are a local school to local families. We believe that it ‘takes a village to raise a child’ and we work closely with our local community to ensure our pupils grow up as fine young men and women who are proactive in creating outstanding futures for themselves and the wider community. Academic success is the passport to success in life. We ensure that every student has that passport and understands that hard work, personal integrity and honesty will lead to a happy life.

We call ourselves Lewisham’s only ‘grammar-style school’ because we provide a traditional academic curriculum and our emphasis on courtesy and old-fashioned ways of behaving aims to give young people the same social capital they would gain in the best grammar schools.

We are a Woodard School, linking us to some of the best public schools in the country. Whether it is our Oxbridge preparation visits or the good manners that are part of daily life at Trinity, you will be able to see that we are ‘no ordinary school’.

The following tables tell you about the number of applications made to each secondary school for admission in September 2014. It will help you consider whether or not your child is likely to be offered a place at each school. Please use this information as a guide only: we cannot guarantee that application rates will be the same in future. Similarly, the home-to-school distances will depend on the applications received by 31 October 2014.

If a school receives more applications than there are places available, places will be offered to children in accordance with the admissions criteria for the school. You can see admissions policies for schools in Lewisham on pages 33–42. Please consider the admissions criteria and judge whether your child is likely to be offered a place. Community secondary schools in Lewisham use home-to-school distances, which are measured in a straight line from the home to a single nodal point in the school premises. See individual policies for voluntary-aided schools and academies for their policies on measuring.

Distances for all secondary schools in Lewisham are calculated by an electronic measuring system from the actual property. There are also commercial measuring systems, which can be accessed free of charge on the internet, that you can use to judge whether your child may qualify for a place. Please note that these sites may only measure from postcode to postcode and are not as precise as the system used by Lewisham Council for school admissions. This information should be used cautiously, as a rough guide.

If you need advice about whether your child is likely to qualify for a place at a secondary school in Lewisham, or information about your distance to a school in Lewisham, please contact us on 020 8314 8282. If you have questions about the admissions criteria or the likelihood of your child gaining a place in a school outside Lewisham, you should contact the school or the relevant council direct.

Admissions criteria for schools in Lewisham

Admissions policy for: Conisborough CollegeDeptford Green SchoolForest Hill SchoolPrendergast Ladywell Fields CollegeSedgehill SchoolSydenham SchoolWhen these schools are oversubscribed (having more applicants than places available) priority within each band of ability will be given in the following order:

1. Children in public care, or who were previously in public care and have been adopted (see below) – details must be supplied by the allocated social worker or foster carer. These are children in care to a local authority or provided with accommodation by that authority, as well as children who were in care to a local authority in England or Wales, but ceased to be so because they were adopted (or became subject to a residence order or special guardianship order).

2. Children on the grounds of their or their family’s severe medical or social need for that particular school and who would not otherwise qualify for admission – there is discretion to admit these children in exceptional circumstances. The application must be supported by a letter from a hospital consultant, social worker or similar professional setting out the reasons why the school is the only one able to meet the child’s needs, before an admission decision is made. The admission decision will be considered in consultation with a panel of teaching and medical professionals. Medical professionals provide advice on applications made under medical conditions and teaching professionals advise on applications made for social or special reasons. Supporting evidence must be provided before the closing date for applications.

3a. 11–16 community schools – children whose older brother or sister is on the roll of the school on the closing date for applications as well as those whose sibling was a former pupil of the school and who transferred to a 16–18 education provision at the end of the previous academic year. If the school is over-subscribed entirely with siblings, priority will be given (i) to those with exceptional social and medical need and (ii) to those living nearest the school.

or

3b. 11–18 community schools – children whose brother or sister is on the roll of the school on the closing date for applications and will still be on the roll of the school at the intended date of admission. If the school is oversubscribed entirely with siblings, priority will be given as in 3a above.

Siblings include all blood and adoptive siblings, half siblings, foster siblings of looked after children and step siblings. Siblings must all live at the same address as the child. Proof of the sibling relationship may be required.

4. Children who live nearest to the school – all distances will be measured to a central nodal point in the school premises in a straight line, using digitised mapping software of the area, from a nodal point in the applicant’s permanent home address. If more than one applicant lives in a multi-occupancy building, such as a block of flats, priority will be given to the applicant whose door number is the lowest numerically and/or alphabetically.

Twins, triplets and other multiple birthsWhere a twin, triplet or child from another multiple birth qualifies for the last school place to be allocated, Lewisham Council will admit all of the qualifying siblings in excess of the published admissions limit.

Page 34: Secondary schools in Lewisham 2015-16 Secondary schools in Lewisham 2015–16 Lewisham Council is an outstanding authority Ofsted rates Lewisham Council as outstanding with ‘highly

34 Secondary schools in Lewisham 2015–16

Tie breakOn the rare occasion where two or more identical applications (other than multiple births) qualify for the last available place, lots will be drawn to decide which qualifying child is offered the place.

When a school is oversubscribed, any vacancy which arises as a result of a withdrawal of a successful application will be offered to the next child on the waiting list in that band. If there are no children left on the waiting list in that band, applicants from adjoining bands will be offered places.

Waiting listsRequests to be placed on a waiting list for a community school must be made through the home local authority in accordance with the pan London agreement, and to ensure Lewisham Council meets its duty to continue to coordinate admissions beyond offer date and comply with parents’ highest possible preference, children will not be allowed to go on waiting lists for schools they ranked as lower preferences than the school offered, until September 2015, when they can make a fresh application as an in-year applicant. An exception to this is where Lewisham Council (or the home local authority) has agreed to a parental request to change the order of preferences. In this case, the original application, including any offer made under coordination, will be withdrawn and the applicant will be required to reapply. Waiting lists will be held for the first academic year only.

Applications received for Year 7 from 1 August 2015 will be considered as in-year applications.

Voluntary-aided and academy schools’ admissions policiesThese schools have their own criteria for deciding which children to admit. Each school’s admissions policy, the annual intake and other information about the school are included in the school’s prospectus, which can be obtained from the headteacher. A summary of each school’s admissions policy is given in this booklet, but you are advised to obtain a full copy before you apply.

In line with government legislation, all schools participate in Lewisham’s coordinated admissions system and follow published timescales. The following pages contain information about the admissions policies of voluntary-aided schools and academies in Lewisham. The main points of each of the schools’ admissions criteria are listed, but parents are advised to contact schools individually for:

1. information about parish areas from which priority of admission may be given

2. definition of religious commitment and practice of worship

3. admissions criteria in full, together with definitions of siblings, regular attendance etc.

Distance will be measured in a straight line from the child’s home address (including flats) to the school, using a computerised measuring system. A supplementary information form must be obtained and returned to each faith school if a place is sought based on religious commitment. The school must also be named as a preference on your application. This must be submitted by 31 October 2014.

The information is correct at the time of printing. However, amendments may be made on the direction of the Department for Education or the Schools Adjudicator.

A copy of the full admissions criteria for 2015–16 is available from each school.

Addey and Stanhope School Addey and Stanhope is a co-educational comprehensive school whose intake is broadly balanced in gender and reflects the whole ability range according to Lewisham’s banding system. The admission number for the school is 120. All applicants are first placed within bands, and if there are more applications than there are places available within a band, the governors will allocate places according to the following criteria.

Oversubscription criteria 1. Applicants in public care (looked after children).

‘A looked after child is a child who is (a) in the care of the local authority or (b) being provided with accommodation by a local authority in the exercise of their social services functions and children who were looked after, but

Page 35: Secondary schools in Lewisham 2015-16 Secondary schools in Lewisham 2015–16 Lewisham Council is an outstanding authority Ofsted rates Lewisham Council as outstanding with ‘highly

ceased to be so because they were adopted (or become subject to a residence order or special guardianship order).

2. Applicants with a brother or sister on the roll of Addey and Stanhope School at the closing date for applications and whose sibling is expected to be on the roll of the school at the intended date of admission.

3. Applicants who live nearest to the school. Distances will be measured in a straight line from the home to the main entrance of the school, using the Council’s computerised measuring system (with flats being treated in a way described in this booklet).

4. In the event that two or more identical applicants (i.e. applicants living the same home-to-school distance) qualify for the last available place, the place will be allocated by drawing lots.

These criteria will be applied in order until the available places within each band of ability are offered and taken up. Should either criterion 1 or 2 be oversubscribed, children living nearest to the school, as measured in a straight line, will have priority. Any applicant who is not offered a place at Addey and Stanhope will be placed on the waiting list, by banding and in order of home-to-school distance, and considered for a place at the school if a vacancy arises.

Home address In determining where a child lives, we cannot accept the address of grandparents, other relatives or childminders, unless the parents themselves actually live at the same address. Proof of residence may be requested before the definite offer of a place will be confirmed.

Siblings A sibling is defined as a full or half-brother or sister or a foster brother or sister, living at the same address as the applicant.

Bonus Pastor Catholic CollegeBonus Pastor Catholic College was founded by the Catholic Church to provide education for children of Catholic families. The college is conducted by its governing body as part of the Catholic Church in accordance with its trust deed and Instrument of Government, and seeks at all times to be a witness to Jesus Christ. In applying for a place at Bonus Pastor

Catholic College it is understood that parents/carers accept the aims and ethos of the Catholic College, and will support its distinctive nature. This does not affect the right of parents/carers who are not of the Catholic faith to apply and be considered for a place here. The governing body has responsibility for admissions to the college and increased the roll of Year 7 in September 2012 to 155 students. Year 7 in September 2015 will also increase to the number of 155 students, whilst Year 11 will remain at 150 students. Each Year 7 group will increase by five students as each academic year progresses. The five additional places in Year 7 are for students with speech, language and communication needs.

Oversubscription criteria1. Looked after baptised Catholic children, or looked

after children in the care of Catholic families.

2. Committed and practising baptised Catholic children from families where at least one parent/carer is a practising Catholic.

3. Baptised Catholic children who themselves are committed and practising, although the parents/ carers are not.

In interpreting commitment and practice the governors take into account frequency of regular attendance at Sunday Mass, as indicated on the supplementary information form. A higher priority will be given where there is a higher regular frequency of attendance at Sunday Mass, as verified by the nominated priest.

When the college is oversubscribed with applicants whose commitment and practice has been verified by the parish priest the governors will refer to the preceding paragraph in prioritising places and will then take the following factors into account, in the order of priority shown:

a) The presence of a baptised Catholic sibling on the roll of the college at the time of admission, i.e. 1st September 2015.

b) Serious medical grounds supported by a consultant’s letter at the time of application, considered at the discretion of the governing body. This supporting evidence should set out the particular reasons why this college is the most suitable and the difficulties that would be caused if the child had to attend another school.

4. Baptised Catholic children whose frequency of attendance at Sunday Mass is irregular or occasional.

5. Baptised Catholic children who may not be attending Sunday Mass at the time of application. Sub-categories (a), (b), and (c) apply in prioritizing applications in the above two groups.

6. Other looked after children.

7. The presence of a non-baptised sibling who has regular attendance at Sunday Mass, as verified by their nominated priest, on the roll of the college at the time of admission, i.e. 1st September 2015.

8. Non-baptised children who have regular attendance at Sunday Mass, as verified by their nominated priest.

9. The presence of a baptised or dedicated sibling of another Christian denomination whose practice can be verified by a priest, minister or pastor of the denomination, on the roll of the college at the time of admission, i.e. 1st September 2015.

10. Baptised or dedicated children of other Christian denominations whose practice can be supported by a priest, minister or pastor of the denomination.

11. The presence of a baptised or dedicated sibling of another Christian denomination who are not practising, on the roll of the college at the time of admission, i.e. 1st September 2015.

12. Baptised or dedicated children of other Christian denominations who are not practising.

13. The presence of a sibling from other faiths on the roll of the college at the time of admission, i.e. 1st September 2015.

14. Children of other faiths.

15. Any other applicant. Sub-categories (a), (b) and (c) apply in prioritising applications in the above four groups.

NotesThese form part of the policy and criteria. In addition

to the online application or common application form, a Bonus Pastor supplementary information form should be completed by parents/carers on behalf of all prospective pupils. Completion of a supplementary information form is not mandatory but if one is not received the governors will be unable to apply their admission criteria and the application will be considered under Criterion 15 above ‘Any other applicant’.

This information is correct at the time of printing however amendments may be made on the direction of the Department for Education or the Schools Adjudicator.

1. Girls in public care in consultation with the Executive Director for Children and Young People.*

2. Ten per cent of the intake will be selected on the basis of aptitude for music as judged by the applicant’s test result and audition.

If it is necessary to distinguish between applicants within any of the above categories, places will be allocated first to those applicants who have a sibling (see definition 4) who will be attending the academy at the proposed date of admission of the applicant.

After siblings, the remaining places will be allocated to those whose home addresses are closest to the academy, as measured by straight-line distance from the main entrance of the academy to the main entrance to the child’s normal place of residence. If it is necessary to distinguish between two applicants with a sibling connection, this will be done on the basis of closeness to the academy as determined by straight-line distance as described above.

We welcome applications from all members of the community and we ask all parents to respect the Christian character of our school.

The governors admit 120 students to Year 7 each September. The governors seek to maintain as far as possible those banding arrangements set by Lewisham Council. Children are admitted to the school in equal proportions (20% from each band) from the bands designated by the Council in Year 5. Once each band is full children from the next band down are considered according to the criteria below.

Parents applying for places do so knowing that Trinity Church of England School provides an education based on Christian principles.

Foundation places The governors have designated 60% of places (72) each year as foundation places for children who attend or whose parents attend a Christian place of worship according to the criteria below.

A supplementary form should be sent to the school by the statutory closing date for secondary school applications: 31 October.

If there are more applicants than places available priority will be given in the following order:

1. Looked after children attending or whose parent or carer attends a place of Christian worship regularly in that the priest or minister reports attendance on average twice or more each month over the preceding two years.

2. Children attending a Church of England place of worship regularly in that the priest reports attendance on average twice or more each month over the preceding two years.

3. along a straight line from the child’s home to the school gate.

If there are insufficient places to accommodate all applicants qualified under one criterion, places will be allocated to those children who live the shortest distance from school measured in a straight line using digitised mapping software or ordnance survey maps of the area from the home to the school’s main door. In the event that two or more applicants live the same distance from the school, the place will be allocated by drawing lots. Where children live in the same building, such as a block of flats, preference will be given in ascending numerical and if necessary alphabetic order according to the flat’s address.

Open places The governors have designated 40% of places (48) each year as open places. Priority will be given to:

1. Looked after children.

2. Children who have a brother, sister or step or half siblings including fostered and adopted siblings living at the same home address attending Trinity at the time of admission. Children with siblings in Year 11 who will have left Trinity at the time of the younger child’s admission do not qualify.

3. Children who live nearest to the school, measured along a straight line from the child’s home to the school gate. In the event that two or more applicants live the same distance from the school, the place will be allocated by drawing lots.

Home-to-school distance will be considered from the main door at the school’s site in Taunton Road.

Looked after children are children who are (a) in the care of a local authority, or (b) being provided with accommodation by a local authority in the exercise of their social services functions (see definition in section 22(1) of the Children Act 1989). A previously looked after child is a child who was adopted, or subject to a residence order, or special guardianship order, immediately following having been looked after (details must be supplied by the allocated social worker or foster carer).

The school is part of the locally agreed coordinated admissions scheme and the timescales for applications to be received and processed are those agreed with the Council. Parents must apply online or complete their home borough’s common application form (CAF), naming this school as one of the preferences. Parents who wish to apply for a foundation place must also send a supplementary form to the school. The governors will consider late applications in accordance with the procedure in the local authority’s secondary admission booklet.

Waiting list The school operates a waiting list which is ordered in accordance with the admissions criteria. The waiting list is held until the end of the autumn term in the admission year. Parents may request in writing to join the waiting list.

Appeals procedure Appeals should be put in writing to the clerk of the appeals panel, care of the school, by the appeals deadline, clearly stating the grounds for the appeal. The school has adopted the same appeals deadline as Lewisham community schools. Appeals will be heard by an independent appeals panel before the end of the summer term.

Should a vacancy arise at the school before the appeals panel meets, the school will allocate the vacancy to an applicant in accordance with its published admissions criteria.

Twins, triplets and other multiple births Where twins, triplets or children from other multiple births qualify for the last place to be allocated the governors will admit all the qualifying siblings in excess of the published admissions limit and they will be considered as ‘excepted pupils’.

Fair access The school is committed to taking its fair share of pupils who are hard to place in accordance with the locally agreed fair access protocol. Pupils admitted under the protocol will take priority over any children on the waiting list and this may include, on occasion, admitting above the planned admission number.
