From time to time, school administrators are moved to different schools within our school board. Therefore, it is with mixed emotions that I am sharing with you, the Southwood community, that my time as the Vice Principal at Southwood School will be coming to an end at the conclusion of this school year. In September, I will be moving on to become the Vice Principal at General Brock School. MULTICULTURAL DAY

AT SOUTHWOOD SCHOOL

The staff and students at Southwood will be hosting a multicultural day on Thursday June 23rd. This month our students will be participating in a variety of discussions and activities aimed at learning more about each culture and celebrating with a Multicultural Potluck Luncheon by sampling various cultural cuisines! Here’s how you can help support our Guiding Theme of Cultural Diversity at Southwood School:

Parents and grandparents can support by discussing personal heritage stories with their child/grandchild.

Send your child to school in traditional dress on Thursday June 23rd. Dress items can range from full traditional dress to simply creating an item representing the child’s cultural heritage (hat, badge, or flag) to wear to school on that day.

We will also be sampling traditional foods from each child’s heritage in our classrooms during our Multicultural Potluck Luncheon on June 23rd. If possible, we are asking parents to contribute food items to their child's classroom on the day of the event.

Please assist us in planning for this event by completing the following and return it to your child’s teacher by June 17th.

With the sunny, warm weather coming, it’s great to get outside again. When being active in the warm or hot temperatures, make sure everyone drinks plenty of water to stay hydrated. If you’re away from the house at a park or an outside event, be sure to bring bottles of water – try freezing some overnight so they’re cold throughout the day as they thaw.

On Monday, June 27th students in grades 4 through 8 will be

participating in a baseball day at Veterans Memorial Park. Students will report

to school at the regular time and check in for attendance with their homeroom

teachers. After attendance is taken they will make their way to the Gymnasium

and locate their team and coach for the day. Your child will play and stay with

this team for the duration of the day. The students will then walk to Veterans

Memorial park with their team.

At Veterans Memorial Park the students of Southwood will play baseball in a tournament. There will

be one pool and teams will play a minimum of four games. Snacks and beverages will be available for purchase

at the concession stand or a home-made lunch can be brought over to the park. After the lunch break, playoffs

will begin.

Students are encouraged to wear the colour t-shirt of their team, if possible. Items that students should

bring with them are: hat, sunscreen, water, snacks, running shoes, sunglasses. Personal devices are allowed but

not recommended for baseball day. Photographing or recording is not allowed during the day. Optional items

include: baseball glove/bat/ rubber spikes. After the championship game we will walk back to the school

arriving at approximately 2:15 pm.

We are looking forward to a great day of baseball, fun and excitement on Monday, June 27th. If you

have any questions please contact Mr. Trudell at (519)-969-3470. In case of inclement weather the students will

stay at the school and have a regular scheduled day.

If you are available to volunteer on that day, please detach this section and

return it to your child's teacher.

With great pride and enthusiasm, athletes from around Windsor and Essex County were

welcomed to the GECDSB’s annual Special Olympics Track and Field event held on May 13th at

Sandwich Secondary School. More than 300 competitors from around the Board, student

leadership volunteers, and staff members gathered at Sandwich on that day for the Elementary

Special Olympics.

Student athletes were able to compete in a wide variety of track and field events. After enjoying

a lunch break, all the participants were treated to a dance in the gym. At the end of the day,

Southwood athletes were adorned with a vast assortment of ribbons! Thank-you to all the staff,

volunteers, and parents who helped to make that a successful and fun event for our student

athletes!

SHORTS and TOPS Reminders!

Students and Parents/Guardians: now that we are into warmer weather, please make sure that

shorts and tops are of an appropriate length. That means:

SHORTS: need to be at the end of your hands with a closed fist in

order to be OK for school.

TOPS: need to be at least two fingers wide over the shoulders.

We understand that finding appropriate clothing for

school in stores is not always the easiest task for parents,

but it is important that our students maintain appropriate

attire in a school setting. We greatly appreciate your support with this and if

you have any questions concerning this, please do not hesitate to contact your

child’s teacher or Mrs. Lowes or Mr. Johnson in the office.

Lego Robotics in the GAINS Classroom!

Thanks to the efforts of Mr. Renaud, the students in our GAINS classroom had an opportunity to work with the very engaging Lego Robotics kits. His students were able to

“program” their robotics kits, using the classroom smartboard, and then build their working creations. One of the favourites was the “giant that was picked up by a crane”. Thanks to Mr. Renaud and the rest of the GAINS staff for continually providing our students with wonderful learning opportunities!

If you are driving down Cabana Road in front of our school, you may notice a new sign on our front lawn. This “new” sign

is actually our existing sign refurbished. Jeff and his crew at Dow Signs did a spectacular job refurbishing our old, faded and

tired sign! Thanks to the fundraising efforts of our school community, and the fundraising efforts of our School Advisory

Council (SAC), we were able to give our old sign a new and updated look with our current logo! In addition, our new sign is

equipped with all new energy efficient LED lighting! For a comparison, refer to the banner picture at the top of this newsletter.
