We are half way through 2012 and itseems like we have just begun to reach thegoals we set out to accomplish this year.Membership renewal has been very suc-cessful. We look forward to publishing our2012 directory. We are also planning anew member recruitment campaign with aclub brochure.

Social activities have been very suc-cessful each month, including June’sFather’s Day barbecue. I think we finishedall the food thanks to our fine chefs andhelpers. Thanks to all who contributed tothis event.

Racing fans have a new sailing team,The Spice Girls. Read about them in theRace Captain’s article. We’ve had a cruiseout to Catalina in May and RainbowHarbor in June. We will continue through-out the summer. Watch for the AmericanLegion Cruise Out and hope to continuethroughout the summer.

Since the reconstruction of Basin 1 inAlamitos Bay we have been unable tocruise into our long dock. Many of ourmembers and fellow yacht club membersenjoy visiting us during the summer andmiss this benefit. We understand the dredg-

It was really great seeing everyoneon Father’s Day. The BBQ was great, weather perfect and seeing all the fam-ilies together, well who could ask formore? My many thanks to all thathelped put this event on: Jim Tierney,Tony Carbone and Mark Steiert for thegreat grilling of the meat, Becky Riet-dyk, Tamara Carbone and crew settingup the sides and salads, Brenda Cuzzitaking your money at the door andselling raffle ticket, Tony Rietdyk forset up, the Bocce Tournament and

filling in when needed, and last butcertainly not least Ken Pirkola and histrusty assistant Camille D’Esopo fortending to the drink wishes of us all.The Bocce Tournament was great towatch with Janet Satterfield and LiMelvina from Single Sailor beating allfor the win. Congratulations to youboth for a well played game.

July events are coming up fast andfurious. I hope to see you all at one ormore:

Membership development is progress-ing very nicely.  We're in the process ofdesigning a brochure similar to our otherlocal clubs to promote increased member-ship.  It should be published later this year. Also, we'll soon have license plate framesfor sale in the Ship's Store with our clubname and burgee embossed.

Phil Patterson's memorial at the Shore-line Yacht Club Sunday the 24th was very

well attended with friends, relatives, andrepresentatives from many clubs; standingroom only in fact.  I had the opportunity tosay a few words on behalf of NYCLB asPhil was a member of the NYCLB.  I spokeof Phil's infectious good humor and friend-liness to us all.  I also mentioned that hisepitaph would most likely have been: “Hedid not go gentle into that good night, heraged against the dying of the light,” toquote the poet Dylan Thomas.  He will be

ing and rebuilding will be completedsoon as the basin team is workingaround the clock. Check out the picturesof the territory that was once filled withlarge sailing vessels and imagine anewly constructed, modern facilitysometime near the end of the year.

Our Clubhouse Expansion Commit-tee has been very busy working withCity and State officials to present ourproposed Clubhouse plans. Goingthrough this process is very time con-suming but will be well worth the effortin the future

Independence Day is associatedwith fireworks, parades, and barbecuescelebrating our history. We are celebrat-

ing twice this year with a potluck barbe-cue on July 3 to watch the fireworksfrom McKenna’s in Alamitos Bay, andanother potluck on July 4 to watch theQueen Mary Fireworks. Come early toeat and stay for the fireworks that beginaround 9 pm on both evenings. Weexpect large crowds for both events.Check out the flyer

Watch for the Luau, my favoriteparty, on Saturday, August 18. Also, weare planning another party at Barney’sBeach House aboard the NWSSB beforethe summer is over. The CharityRegatta Pancake breakfast and swapmeet is scheduled for July 14 and we’llhave our annual Charity Regatta Brunchsome time in September.

The ship’s store has been very busy

selling hats, men’s and women’s shirtsand jackets. We’re planning a NYCLBlicense plate cover for our members tohelp advertise our club. More informa-tion will be coming about this new item.

I want to thank all the 2012 FlagOfficers, Directors and Chairs who havegiven their time and energy to keep theclub events and programs functioningso well. Or course we cannot be suc-cessful without member participationand contributions, the heart the NavyYacht Club. Don’t forget to attend ourFriday night potlucks and bring yourfriends and potential members to seefirst hand what is so special about ourclub.

Summer is hereand the racingnever stops. Lastweekend I had theprivilege to bearound ABYC andLBYC to watchhow they hostedtheir biggest event

of the year (Long Beach RaceWeek). Wow did they do a fantasticjob. It was a great venue with 150plus yachts of all sizes that were thebest of the best competing againsteach other to win a trophy. Just thecost to win that trophy is more thanyou can imagine, but the victory issweet as honey that you’ll neverforget. I have to congratulate mybuddy Chris Mewes, a member ofNYCLB and his crew, who on“Shadowfax” a J109 got a trophy fortheir class. Please don’t ask him how

much that trophy cost, just ask himhow sweet was that honey.

Do you remember the Spice Girlsfrom England? If you don’t itdoesn’t matter. We have our ownSpice Girls from NYCLB andLBYC. Thanks to our member LisaMeier who chartered a Catalina 37from the Long Beach SailingFoundation. She asked a bunch ofgirls and few guys to come sailingwith her on the boat to competeagainst 10 other Catalina 37’s. In thefirst series we got third overall. Notbad, and it does taste as sweet ashoney. Check out the pictures

Our next upcoming race isthe (Salty Saturday Race) SaturdayJuly 28th. Check our website athttp://www.nyclb.com for moreinformation.

Catalina Cruise Out to Two Harbors, May, 2012

For past two years our Catalina Cruisers set out on Memorial Day weekend and ended up at other marinasbecause of high swells and stormy weather on the trip over. Around 30 members signed up for the first summerweekend on Two Harbors. Those who left early reached the island before the weather kept the rest closer to homeat other marinas.

Ron Warren’s Easy, Mark Steiert’s Ramos Fizz and LaVon & Bill Plumlee’s Sea Castle with Al and Val DelReal aboard headed out Wednesday and Thursday and arrived at Two Harbors. Donna and Bob Green left Saturdaymorning but turned back because of swells and high winds.  Cheers went to Cabrillo YC to join the Seal Beach YCcruise out.  The Rietdyk's and Carbone's, started on Saturday but turned left at the breakwater to get out of the swellsand high winds. They ended up at Newport Harbor joining the Marina Yacht Club's raft up at the anchorage nearLido Isle.

Pine Avenue Cruise Out. June, 2012.

The weather at Rainbow Harbor on June 22-24 couldn’t have been better and the area was jumping with thelively sounds and aromas from the Bayou festival featuring New Orleans and Mardi Gras, the Jazz Festival atShoreline Village and many other fun activities in the Harbor area. Ron Warren, Mark Steiert and Tony & BeckyRietdyk cruised the weekend with guests, Sylvia & Tommy Wheeler and Tony & Tamara Carbone dropping by tohangout.
