Principal’s Note Dear Students and Parents, New Springs Schools have kicked off the academic year with a bang! Our teachers and students are geared up and battling the challenges associated with holistic learning, all in meaningful and respectful ways. With much to be achieved, we are wasting absolutely no time in practicing effective instructional and behavioral practices that will bring out only the best in our students. Some classes have even started to venture on field trips and many others are getting ready to go. Thanks to all the staffs and families who came out to our Welcome Picnic; it was certainly a refreshing environment for the extended school community to interact. We are also happy with the outcome of our Grandparents Breakfast. Please remember, we all make this school what it is and we have the power to improve it to its fullest potential. Let’s continue to work together and communicate with each other for the benefit of our students. I urge you to come and meet with your child/children’s teacher/s on our first scheduled school-wide Parent-Teacher Conference (PTC) on Thursday, October 8 th , from 4 – 6pm. During this PTC, check on how your child has been progressing thus far. Students usually emerge themselves more into classroom activities and routines when they see that their parents/guardians care and are involved. Principal’s Note

Dear Students and Parents,

New Springs Schools have kicked off the academic year with a bang! Our teachers

and students are geared up and battling the challenges associated with holistic

learning, all in meaningful and respectful ways.

With much to be achieved, we are wasting absolutely no time in practicing

effective instructional and behavioral practices that will bring out only the best in

our students. Some classes have even started to venture on field trips and many

others are getting ready to go.

Thanks to all the staffs and families who came out to our Welcome Picnic; it was

certainly a refreshing environment for the extended school community to interact.

We are also happy with the outcome of our Grandparents Breakfast. Please

remember, we all make this school what it is and we have the power to improve it

to its fullest potential. Let’s continue to work together and communicate with each

other for the benefit of our students.

I urge you to come and meet with your child/children’s teacher/s on our first

scheduled school-wide Parent-Teacher Conference (PTC) on Thursday, October 8th,

from 4 – 6pm. During this PTC, check on how your child has been progressing thus

far. Students usually emerge themselves more into classroom activities and

routines when they see that their parents/guardians care and are involved.

In closing, I invite you all to continue to participate in our upcoming school-wide

and fundraising activities. You can find an update of calendar activities on our

website at http://newspringsschools.org/ or by liking us on Facebook. Also, be sure

to make use of our online resources and stay in the loop by logging on to

Kindergarten Report

In kindergarten we have

been working hard to

establish our routines and

becoming successful

students. It’s hard to

remember all those

procedures for every activity! We have learned about

our 5 senses by making collages and our alphabet by dancing and movement. We are

also learning to work as a team by working in small groups in reading centers. You

can see us making letters out of playdough and cooperating!

-Mrs. Bresnahan

1st Grade Report

This month in first grade, we really got to dive in

to our Science curriculum. Students had their first

Science lab with middle school teacher, Mr.

Memon, with support from Mrs. Banala. The lab

accommodated a lively discussion about our five

senses and how we use them to observe. We also

did a sensory popcorn activity where students got

to use their five senses on the tastes treat! But

that’s not all, on Friday September 25th, we

celebrated the birthday of Johny Appleseed by

writing literature, doing art, and making apple

sauce! All our students really had a super-fun time!

2nd Grade Report Whew! Where has the time gone? Its amazing how quickly Fall has arrived and our second

graders are excited to see what’s in store. We have

been learning about what it means to be good citizens,

to be respectful to one another, and to be responsible

for our words and our actions. More excitedly, we have

been practicing to use the scientific method as an

avenue to learn

and discover new

things. We have also taken our quest for discovery

outside the classroom walls and visited Old Mickey’s

Farm. There we rode on horsebacks, caught chickens,

milked a cow, and learned the main difference

between a donkey, horse, and a mule! Our students

had an electrifying first field trip experience! Thanks

to all the parent volunteers who came out with us.

Your company helped to make our trip very

successful. -Mrs. Lewis

3rd Grade Report

Our third graders are quite the

scientists! You may hear them

asking each other, "What is your

hypothesis?!" They have been

performing different kinds of

experiments and have been

keeping track of all their data. They hope to continue

asking their own questions, researching, and observing different ideas throughout

the year. In mathematics they have been focusing on place value. They've been

thinking to themselves: Do we round up, or do we round down? They enjoyed

working as teams to create big numbers. They then found the place value of the

numbers, rounded, and wrote the numbers in expanded form! You are all off to such

a great start. :) - Ms. McGuigan

5th Grade Report

Our 5th grade scientists have enjoyed learning

this past month about the scientific method and

how to conduct experiments. The students

enjoyed the "dancing raisin experiment" and were

engaged in discovery. We will now begin

exploring the solar system.

Math has also been raised to a new level. We are

now learning about decimals in the place

value system. Students love working

together on our problem solving Math Stars

newsletters, which are meant to be

challenging and are important for students

to strengthen their mathematical skills. We

will continue to explore new concepts and

prepare for our monthly math competitions!

- Mrs. V. Nieves

Mr. Ates’ Turkish Class Report

Our 7th grade students were very

excited while to express their

feelings about their dream jobs. At

the end of the chaspter, they had

even more fun makin a poster. We

also conducted job interviews

where students took turns

interviewing each other. In each

round of interviewsm one student

was interviewed by 3 of his/her peers. I was very impressed at how serious they were

about the interviews. Their attitudemade this activity very exciting!

Purpose of Monthly Math Competition

Why is it important to assess students frequently?

1. To determine what your students know and are

able to do in mathematics.

2. To determine the next teaching steps in the

scope and sequence of the mathematics concepts

being taught

3. To diagnose the ability of your students to apply

and use mathematics concepts

4. To help your students learn to self-assess their

mathematical skills using the rubrics & benchmarks.

5. To help your students communicate

mathematically, to present strategies, and share

their thinking processes verbally and in written

form.

NSS Monthly Academic Events Dear Parents,

Math Facts Competition

Research has shown that long-term success in Mathematics is closely tied to strong number sense,

including fluency with basic facts. The sooner your child becomes fluent with her or his addition and

subtraction facts from 1-20, the better! Addition and subtraction of larger numbers will be much easier

to master, and multiplication and division are easier to learn with the support of addition and

subtraction fluency.

In order for students to become fluent with their basic facts, they need to develop strategies that move

beyond counting. We have been practicing addition, subtraction facts, (in grades K-2nd) and

multiplication and division facts (in grades 3rd-5th) at school and we are asking that you spend 5-10

minutes nightly practicing math facts with your child. The combination of practice at home and at school

will help your child learn his or her facts quickly. If your child has mastered his/her facts from 1-10,

he/she can begin working on facts to 20 and improving his/her speed.

Ways to Practice Math Fact Fluency:

Play math games

http://www.dmusd.org/Page/5385

Research has shown that math games help students learn their facts because students receive

immediate feedback and repetition with correct answers and games are highly motivating.

Flash Cards

You can purchase premade sets or students can help make their own.

Websites for practice

With adult help, students can practice facts using theses

websites.

NSS Battle of the Books

The purpose of the NSS Elementary

Battle of the Books competition is to

encourage reading by all students at the

elementary school level. Students,

regardless of ability, are exposed to

quality literature representing a variety

of literary styles and viewpoints by prominent authors in the area of young adult

literature. The game format creates interest and excitement in reading. Through the fun

and excitement of the competition, students improve reading skills, mature in their

choices of reading materials, and acquire a broader knowledge base. Even during the

height of the competition, students and teachers should remember that the goal is to

READ, not necessarily to win. - Mrs. Banala

NSS Celebrating Johny Appleseed!

Happy Birthday Johnny Appleseed! On Friday, September 25th, the first graders enjoyed an in school

field trip to celebrate Johnny

Appleseed’s birthday. Each class

rotated to different classrooms for a

fun learning opportunity about the

folk hero, Johnny Appleseed.

When they went to Ms. Maysonet’s

class they watched an informative

video and made a hat shaped like a

pan to wear. According to stories

about Appleseed, he wore a pan on

his head as a hat.

In Mrs. Grant’s class, they learned about apples and enjoyed making and eating homemade

applesauce. Then, in Mrs. Runyon’s class, they listened to a tall tale story about Appleseed and

wrote how they would plan a birthday party for him.

Finally, as the students returned to their class for math they completed a reverse graph. In other

words, they had to read a graph and draw the pictures to match the graph. This was a different way

of looking at graphing. Of course, it followed our theme of Johnny Appleseed.

This was a fun day for the teachers and students. We are looking forward to planning another in

school learning field trip. – Mrs. Runyon

Please support our school’s fundraiser.

By now, your child would have taken home and

information packet regarding how you can help them,

help us, raise money for our schools. Please share our

fundraising initiative with your neighbors, friends, and

relatives who are near and afar. Orders can be placed

in many different ways including online. There are

super cool prizes to be won for those students who

participate! Why wait? Order now!
