  • Multi-Functional MastEr

    The MULTI-MASTER was introduced by ISCAR in 2000. Originally a family of rotating tools with interchangeable cutting heads from solid carbide, it had a serious impact on the development of cutting tools. Now the family has a strong presence for manufacturing in various industrial sectors. In the MULTI-MASTER system, a solid carbide head is connected with a tool body (a shank) by a specially shaped thread. The success of the thread connection, in which the thread is produced directly on a solid carbide part, has changed pre-existing views on the reasonable practicality of such an approach.

    In accordance with the MULTI-MASTER concept, one shank can carry the heads of different cutting shapes and the same head is suitable for mounting in the shanks of various dimensions and materials (steel, tungsten carbide or heavy metal). This concept considerably increases versatility and functionality of the family, significantly reduces demands of special (specially tailored) tools and allows for decreasing customer stock of cutting tools. A limited number of types of the MULTI-MASTER heads and shanks in combination with each other produce a great variety of cutting tools, which meets the most exacting customer requirements and ensures reducing production and logistics costs. The concept makes regrinding unnecessary, which is so common when using regular solid tools, and cardinally diminishes the consumption of tungsten carbide.

    The MULTI-MASTER was designed as a family of indexable solid carbide tools. However, quickly it was found that the MULTI-MASTER opens up fresh opportunities for tools with indexable inserts.

    Introduction of endmill heads with the thread connection that carry inserts allowed creating various indexable modular tools, which are based on the MULTI-MASTER shanks, adapters and reducers. Since then the advantages of the MULTI-MASTER have been applied to indexable milling. The customer received a new effective means for improving performance. For example, an assembled tool produced from a head with

    inserts and a rigid solid carbide shank has increased stiffness, better dynamic behavior and thus successfully withstands vibrations without the need for reducing cutting data. The addition of an extension to a modular tool with inserts solves the problem of machining with high overhang without the necessity to purchase an additional long-reach cutter.

    A further step was the SHANKMASTER TS (threaded shank) system of modular tools, comprising solid carbide shanks and milling heads with indexable inserts. The shanks and heads are connected by the MULTI-MASTER thread. However, the TS shanks are equipped with an external thread and the TS heads feature an internal thread. This is the opposite of the classical MULTI-MASTER design. The TS system allows for producing full carbide shanks without any brazed parts. This makes the connection very rigid and enables stable milling even at long overhang

    application. Optionally, using adapters with internal thread on both their sides, the TS shanks

    are suitable for mounting the MULTI-MASTER heads, too.

    Thus, the advanced

    ISCAR indexable milling families such as

    SUMOMILL, HELIDO UPFEED, TANGPLUNGE and others are now

    connected with the versatile MULTI-MASTER and its younger brother the

    SHANKMASTER. A new indexable cutter can be assembled by selecting a milling head, which carries inserts, with a required shank diameter, length and shape. These features provide versatile and productive solutions and turn the MULTI-MASTER-based indexable milling cutters to be ideal for different applications.

    ISCARs TS (SHANK-MASTER) is comprised of solid carbide shanks and interchangeable cutting heads, carrying indexable inserts. The design allows for producing full carbide shanks without any brazed parts. This makes the connection very rigid and ensures stable cutting even at long overhang applications.

    The shanks and milling heads are connected by the MULTI-MASTER thread. However, the TS shanks are equipped with an external thread and the TS milling heads feature an internal thread. This is the opposite of the current MULTI-MASTER system.

    The TS modular system consists of a variety of the interchangeable heads, including the following advanced ISCAR milling families: SUMOMILL, TANGPLUNGE, HELIDO UPFEED, DROPMILL, BALLPLUS and HELIPLUS.

    Similar to the MULTI-MASTER system, a TS tool can be assembled by selecting a milling head with the required shank diameter and length. These features provide a versatile system. The high-accuracy TS connection provides the customer with a new very rigid tool, ensuring high productivity, due to reduced vibration in long overhang applications, such as in deep surfaces. The SHANK-MASTER system is an ideal solution for die and mold, aerospace and power generation industries.

    The TS system comprises also steel adapters (TS CAB) with internal threads on both sides. These adapters, mounted on the TS shanks, can use all the currently available standard MULTI-MASTER milling heads, expanding the configuration options of both systems.
