Multi-Axis Turningby Craig Timmerman

Craig Timmerman is a full-time artist andproduction woodturner living in Austin, TX. He is anationally-known woodturner and givesdemonstrations and woodturning instruction. Hisprogram on “Multi Axis Turning” will give you anopportunity to explore the idea of making yourturnings with an artistic flair.

He picked up woodturning in 1998 when he tooka weekend class at a local store. After thatweekend the wood working equipment in his shopceased to be used for anything except

woodturning. He has now expanded into using bent lamination (the process

of gluing of thin strips of wood and bending them under pressure over aform) to augment his turnings and to produce new and exciting pieces.

Craig's specialties include hollow forms, spheres, and non-round (e.g.square) turnings. Many of his pieces combine multiple turnings and bentlaminations. He works primarily with reclaimed timber--trees that havecome down in storms, trees being taken down for construction, and theoccasional piece of firewood. Reclaimed timber is often filled with flawsof different kinds, such as cracks, bug holes, or voids. Rather than try toremove the flaws, he accentuates them by making them the focal point ofthe piece, filling them with crushed stone, or carving them into othershapes.

Craig's work is in several central Texas galleries and can also be foundon this website. He also does a few art shows each year, including theArmadillo Christmas Bazaar-Austin's oldest Christmas art show. He hasbeen married to his wife Tina for over 30 years and they live just outsideAustin with their two cats and two dogs. If life wasn't busy enough, Craigalso sings barbershop and a cappella music with a quartet and chorus.

· If you did not sign up for an April class with internationallyfamous turner Alan Lacer the classes are full but it is not totallytoo late. There are occasional last minute cancellations so youmay sign up on a wait list in case there is an opening. Call JohnHorn at 817-944-3993 if you would like to be wait-listed.

· We are making a new Club Directory for 2017 and this is yourlast chance to get your mug in it. If we do not have yourpicture, PLEASE have it made by David Carter at the meeting(south end of room). This is a great help in putting a face with aname so get yours made. You don’t want to have a blob for yourimage.

● Starting this month there will be a mentor available at 4:00pmbefore our meeting to answer any of your turning or sharpeningquestions. We will have a lathe and grinding station available sobring your turning or tools to get personalized help.

● "Bob's inside out Challenge" for February was a bona fide superCHALLENGE, but you really came through with several fantasticand also several “unique” turnings. Let’s see how you do onturning three decorated eggs for the March challenge.Remember you get one quarterly drawing ticket for eachchallenge you participate in.

● I was a bit surprised at the critique vote last meeting where themajority wanted a “hard” critique rather than a “show and tell”.

On reflection though, it is encouraging that so many are moreinterested in improving their skills rather than just showing whatthey did. I will be having board members pick about threeturnings that I, or my designee, will critique. I would like to domore than three pieces but there just isn’t enough time. Pleaseremember that what I say is not personal and take it as asuggestion for improvement. We will try this for a few months andsee how it works.

See you at 6:30pm (or 4:00pm for mentoring) and be safe. We don'tneed a new "safety coordinator".

Hands-On Classes and Demonstrationwith ALAN LACER from April 25th through May 1st

Classes $150The classes with Alan Lacer provide our club with an

opportunity for any club member to receive “world classinstruction” that can accelerate your learning curve in a realhurry. Even if you have never taken a lesson or class before, you are encouraged to take one of the few classes that arestill available.

I have heard some people say, “I’m not good enough to take a classfrom a guy like Alan Lacer.”

NOTHING COULD BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH.

Even if you have only turned for a day, a week, or year or two, a classwould be worth much more than the fee charged for the class. You willnot be embarrassed and you will learn so many things in a short time thatyou will wonder why you waited so long to get started learning from oneof the best instructors in the USA.

At this writing there are only four openings for the Fundamentals Classon Sunday, April 30 and six openings for the Fundamentals Class on May1.Starting with a good solid grasp of the fundamentals of turning is thefoundation that every woodturner needs. Trying to learn goodwoodturning technique without taking lessons is like TRYING TO RE-INVENTTHE WHEEL. You might be able to do it to some degree over time, but itis much more time consuming and difficult than allowing someone to helpyou, especially in the beginning.

There is one opening in the Skew #1 class on Friday, April 28th class andtwo openings in the Skew #2 class on Wednesday , April 26th class.

Who’s up for a Challenge? The challenge program’s goal is to encourage all members to

participate and to grow their capabilities.  It is a chance forexperienced turners to turn something they never have tried and fornew turners to learn.

The February challenge was to an inside/outside turning.Inside/outside turning offers the ability to turn delicate turnings withthe inside of the turning showing.  This technique makes veryinteresting Christmas ornaments, candlesticks and statues.  Seventeen(17) members turned inside/outside turnings for this challenge.  Belowis a list of members who participated in this challenge:

Jeff Allen  Bob Clark  Dick Koch  Scott WisdomJim Barkelew  Kelton Cloud  Richard Kenyon  Bob WigginsBobby Bartlett  Glynn Cox  John LauderbaughDavid Carter  Fred Denke  Ray MoyerDon Christiansen Bill Holt  Pam Thompson

If you have an idea for a challenge please pass it on to BobWiggins.

The challenge for the March meeting is to turn 3 decorated eggs. Thisis a good tool control challenge that can be as difficult as you want tomake it.  There is still plenty of time to get the challenge done beforethe meeting.

We will be having the challenge drawing at the April meeting. For everychallenge that you complete, you will get a ticket for the drawing for thatquarter. The most tickets anyone can earn is three, and any one personcan only win one prize per challenge drawing. We havesome really nice prizes for next months drawing, so turnsome eggs, and you could be a winner .

Hope to see you Thursday.

If you have any questions or comments, let me, Ron Traylor, know [email protected].
