Upon th e re c ommendati on of th e Al umn i Secretary and by a unan imous vote of those

present , the annual du es of th e Oh io Un ivers ity Alumn i Assoc iat i on were in creased from

For years th e c entra l offi c e of th e asso c iati on has b een making an effort to render most

of th e servi c e s whi ch may wel l b e expected o f such an offi c e but always ser iously hand icapped

by a lack of funds . Working , l ast year , up on a budget of on ly a l ittl e more than two

thousand do l lars th e alumni offi c e publ ish ed n in e issues (in c l uding th i s on e ) of The Ohio

Alumnus , re c e ived and answere d over e ightee n hundred l etters , planned , exe cuted and financ ed

invo lved a cal l upon the asso c iation treasu rer .

The treasurer ’s r eport,to b e found el sewhere , shows a balanc e of remain ing at th e

end of th e fiscal year , June 1 , 1 9 2 7 . Such an item in the statement would be a cause for

satisfa ct ion if th e appended l ist of unpa id b i l l s were not , of ne ce ssity , to b e c on sidered .

What is a very mod est balan c e on th e first d ay o f Jun e wi l l b e c ome a rath er terri fying defi c it

wil l be

In some organ izations th e matter of a f o ur hundred dol lar d efi c it i s , we suppose , i n con se

of the re lati vel y smal l amount of annual revenue , a d i sc o uraging prospe ct .

To “ fund " our debt and to all ow for a n ec essary , but al l too sl ight , expan si on in th e work

of th e. alumn i department an in creas e in th e membership fee was unavo idab l e,h en c e th e

Lest anyon e fe e l that th e ind ivid ual c o st of maintain ing h is organ i zat i on is more than

that in oth er al umn i bod ie s it may b e remarked that there are n o other a sso c iati on s in th e

state,in conn ecti on with schoo l s of the same s iz e and rank as Oh io Un ivers ity , in wh ich th e

membersh ip fe e (in c lu ding the subscr ipt i on t o th e a lumn i magaz in e ) is as l ow as it has been

in the Ohio Un ivers ity asso c iati on for th e past five years . Stat isti c s in support o f th is state

ment wil l b e mail ed to the members of th e as so c iati on n ext September , at which time the pay

The un ivers ity admin istrat ion has b een m ore than generous in giving financ ia l support to

th e al umn i ofii ce in return for th e many dir ect and in direct servi c es ren dered to th e i n stitu

equipment,and

,to a large extent

,the travel ing exp enses o f a l umn i speakers

,are be ing cared

v i ded for mechan ical e quipment out of th e f unds of the un iversity in order that th e offi c emight be b etter prepare d to do effe ct ive an d effi c ient work .

The un ivers ity i s do ing al l that can reas onab ly be expected of it,and more . The burd en

of support ing th e offi c e to the extent that it may fun cti on effect ivel y and creditably must b e

borne by the alumni . That ’ s on ly fair,isn ’ t i t ? The h 0 pe is expresse d , th erefore , that when

the time for th e renewing membersh ip s arr ive s al l wil l j o in ch eerful ly an d enthusiast i cal ly in

But ne ither bronz e n or marbl e can speak

the tr ibute j ustly due h i s name . And it i s n ot

within the power of any one to do ade quate

homage to th e man , for , in h is case , th e most

extravagant prais e c o ul d n ot be exaggeration.

H e was a master teach er— a man of out

unusual p ersona l ity . Although modest ly d is

c la iming gr eat l earn ing outsid e h i s own chosen

se emed to be an open book to him,and he

free ly drew upon al l t o e luc i date the subj ects

wh ich from time to t ime were under d iscus

He was un i que in meth

and art ifi c e known to

th e ski l l ed teach er , at

he had previously b een asked to prepare and

by d isc ussi on of the paper , at oth er times by

l e cture, often by a comb ination of two or more

o f these methods . And it never was possib l e to

know in advanc e what metho d was to be fo l

But whatever the method , interest

espec ial l y student human nature— as few men

do . If on e was n ot at l east a fa ir student , he

c ou l d not long remain in th e c lass . And the

was cal l ed forth .

Doctor Gordy was a gen ius . He se emed a

Socrates return ed . His le cture s were of u n

usual forc e and e l o qu en c e . Favored in deed

were those who came under th e influenc e of

th i s great teach er . To them his words have

been a last ing insp iration . The l if e of each

who heard hi s vo ic e has been enri che d th ere

And it must n ot be over- l o oked that Do ctor

Gordy made a large c ontribution to th e l itera

Th is , taken from A Broader Elementary

And th is quotati on from the same work not

"

These quotation s give some faint noti on of

his wonderful ly effe ctive style . Although my

educati on , hi s wr it ings for me‘

have l ost n on e

of the ir charm , and th i s d oubtl ess i s true of

others of h is students h ere present .

Nor should it be forgotten that the fame of

Dr . Gordy brought great prest ige to Ohio Un i

Un iversity many of its students . And th is at

a t ime when the Un ivers ity was j ust b eginn ing

to ari se out of th e sl ough of despond in wh ichIit l ong had b een struggling— when it was

almost without students and was sad ly lacking

fund s . Too m uch cred it can not be given to

h im and to that grand o ld man , Doctor Super ,supported , of c ourse by oth er ab l e members

of th e faculty , for starting the un iversity on

its upward road . The students h e ld Doctor

Gordy in h igh favor from th e beginn ing , an d

of the e l ect ive c ourses offere d those in h i s d e

Many years ago , I stood in Tr in ity church

Hamilton , o f whom Doctor Gordy always

spoke with we l l - n igh worsh ip-ful r everen c e,

and read th is in script ion on the modest st on e:Alexander Hamilton

propheti c word s:“Whose Tal ents andV irtues wi l l b e admired by grateful po s

moul dered into dust . "

And as I read th ese word s on the marbl e

shaft whi ch even then,l e ss than a c entury

after its ere ct ion , was check ed and roughen ed

with d is integration , having already com

with th e ch i sel ed prophecy and with the fact

that th e p ol it i cal phi l o sophy o f th i s i l l ustrio us

c o urse of Amer ican h i story is. more enduring

than monument of marb l e or of gran ite— that

th e great th ings of the min d have more p erma

And so of Dr . Gordy it may be sa id that

h i s contr ibuti on to educati on wil l l ong survive

th i s tab l e t o f bronz e,yea

,that it w il l l ive

gen erations after h is very name has b een for

the l ove for truth whi ch h e awaken ed in

It i s but weak tr ibute whi ch I am paying to

the memory of th i s r emarkabl e man . Much

more c ould wel l b e sa id , an d a vo l ume co ul d

n ot exhaust the subj ect . But most of it is

wel l kn own to al l of you , much of it far better

than to me . However, mere words cannot

express the d ebt we owe to h im . Much of what

we,his former students , are h e mad e us . And

when h e passed beyond the shadows , educa

t ion l o st on e of its ab l est champions .

May thi s tabl et b e a last ing inspiration to

those who hereafter wil l l ead th e way in edu
