I want to thank the students, families, faculty, and staff for their effort and support in the making the start to the new school year one of the smooth- est I can remember in my previous ten years as the SMS principal. I also would like to thank all of the families who attended the SMS Open House on August 1, 2019. It was great to see so many families meeting teachers and visiting their child’s classrooms, and we had a great turnout despite shrinking from 833 students to 579 students with the opening of Wrightson Ridge School! Family involvement in a student's education are influential forces in academic achievement. I encourage families to regularly talk to their child about what they are learning, have high expectations for academic perform- ance, communicate frequently with their child’s teachers, and participate as much as they are able in school events, such as family-teacher conferences and the Parent-Teacher Organization. Students also benefit from being in- volved in their school through attending school events and participating in clubs and sports, which promote a sense of belonging, build a bond between the students and their school, and have positive effects on attendance, achievement, and behavior. Please save the date on your calendar for Fall Family-Teacher Confer- ences on Wednesday-Thursday, October 16-17, 2019. Teacher team confer- ences by appointment will be from 2:50-3:50 P.M. on Wednesday, October 16, and from 1:35 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. on Thursday, October 17, in the SMS library. Team conferences are arranged at the request of teachers or families for stu- dents struggling in terms of academics, behavior, or attendance. If you wish to set up an appointment for a teacher team conference with all of your child’s teachers at one time, please contact John Haas, SMS counselor, at [email protected] or 625-3502, ext. 1404. Individual teacher conferences on a walk-in basis will be from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. in the SMS gymnasium on Thursday, October 17. The SMS philosophy regarding family-teacher conferences is that we want to meet with as many families and students as possible, even if your child is not struggling or failing. It is an opportunity to celebrate successes and make plans for having a successful second quarter. Students are welcome and encouraged to attend, as they are the most important factor in their suc- cess. I sincerely hope to see you there. If you have a question, concern, or idea, please don’t hesitate to con- tact me at [email protected] or 625-3502, ext. 1402. The SMS faculty and staff strive to increase home-school communication and collaboration and believe in creating partnerships with families to support student growth and achievement. The SMS teachers, faculty, staff, and administrators will do our best to return your communication within 24 hours, if not sooner. Thank you for all you do for SMS and have a great year! Fall Family-Teacher Conferences

10/16-10/17

Dear SMS Families,

The 2019-2020 school year is fully underway and had an amazing

start! I want to thank the students, families, faculty, and staff for their effort

and support in the making the start to the new school year one of the smooth-

est I can remember in my previous ten years as the SMS principal. I also would

like to thank all of the families who attended the SMS Open House on August

1, 2019. It was great to see so many families meeting teachers and visiting

their child’s classrooms, and we had a great turnout despite shrinking from

833 students to 579 students with the opening of Wrightson Ridge School!

Family involvement in a student's education are influential forces in

academic achievement. I encourage families to regularly talk to their child

about what they are learning, have high expectations for academic perform-

ance, communicate frequently with their child’s teachers, and participate as

much as they are able in school events, such as family-teacher conferences

and the Parent-Teacher Organization. Students also benefit from being in-

volved in their school through attending school events and participating in

clubs and sports, which promote a sense of belonging, build a bond between

the students and their school, and have positive effects on attendance,

achievement, and behavior.

Please save the date on your calendar for Fall Family-Teacher Confer-

ences on Wednesday-Thursday, October 16-17, 2019. Teacher team confer-

ences by appointment will be from 2:50-3:50 P.M. on Wednesday, October 16,

and from 1:35 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. on Thursday, October 17, in the SMS library.

Team conferences are arranged at the request of teachers or families for stu-

dents struggling in terms of academics, behavior, or attendance. If you wish to

set up an appointment for a teacher team conference with all of your child’s

teachers at one time, please contact John Haas, SMS counselor, at

[email protected] or 625-3502, ext. 1404. Individual teacher conferences

on a walk-in basis will be from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. in the SMS gymnasium

on Thursday, October 17.

The SMS philosophy regarding family-teacher conferences is that we

want to meet with as many families and students as possible, even if your child

is not struggling or failing. It is an opportunity to celebrate successes and

make plans for having a successful second quarter. Students are welcome

and encouraged to attend, as they are the most important factor in their suc-

cess. I sincerely hope to see you there.

If you have a question, concern, or idea, please don’t hesitate to con-

tact me at [email protected] or 625-3502, ext. 1402. The SMS faculty

and staff strive to increase home-school communication and collaboration and

believe in creating partnerships with families to support student growth and

achievement. The SMS teachers, faculty, staff, and administrators will do our

best to return your communication within 24 hours, if not sooner. Thank you

for all you do for SMS and have a great year!

sending it with your child when they return to school!

A big thank you goes to everyone who helps volunteer at SMS!

Are you down with the CCC?

The Campus Clean Up Club! Sahuarita Middle is proud to offer

the CCC for the second year in a row. We meet on Tuesdays

and Thursdays with great incentives for the students. Each

student earns 5 Growl cards per bag of trash they help clean

up. In addition, after 5 total volunteer services, students earn

a free ticket for the snack shack at lunch. This year is off to a

great start with 47 students volunteering at least once.

These students have volunteered several times: Levi Elam,

Hajira Kazia, Ethan Largey and Bryson Nielson!
