Dear SMS Families,
In looking forward to next school year, there are many exciting things
happening at Sahuarita Middle School to continually improve the quality of educa-
tion that students receive. Some things on the horizon are:
Higher-level classes—At Sahuarita Middle School, we strive to meet the needs
of all students and are proud to continue offering the following higher-level
classes: 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Advanced Language Arts; 6th, 7th, and 8th grade
Accelerated Math, including Algebra, Geometry, and Honors Geometry; 8th grade
Advanced Science and 8th grade Forensics; 8th grade Spanish and 8th grade Man-
darin Chinese for high school credit; and 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Technology elec-
tive. 8th grade Spanish and Mandarin Chinese will continue to be offered during
Zero Hour from 7:20-8:20am daily on the SMS campus. An Optional Zero Hour
Course registration form and Technology Elective registration form was given to
your child in Period 1 in early-April and will be posted on our website and Face-
book pages.
Fine Arts classes—We are pleased to be able to continue to provide opportu-
nities to study both 2D and 3D art in our 6th, 7th and 8th grade Art classes as well
as offer Choir, Band, and Orchestra in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. The 7th/8th
grade Orchestra class will be offered during the school day next school year in-
stead of Zero Hour.
Enrichment classes—After three years of implementing enrichment classes,
we will continue to expand upon the enrichment class offerings in order to provide
each student with a different enrichment class each quarter that is engaging and
meaningful as well as affords students the opportunity to study topics at a deeper
level during the daily Reteach/Enrich class period. We will continue to offer Jazz
Band as a semester-long enrichment class and hope to add a semester-long en-
richment Drum Line class.
Daily Math Skills—We will continue the SUSD K-8 Daily Math Skills (DMS) pro-
gram to help students develop math fact fluency (speed and accuracy) starting at
their current level of Math performance and expanding their Math skills through a
systematic progression of skill development.
Grading and Homework Changes—Annually the teacher teams will collabora-
tively evaluate, reflect upon, and refine our grade-level team-based grading and
homework guidelines for the next school year to ensure that they are structured
to help students develop the habits, knowledge, and skills necessary to be suc-
cessful in middle school, high school, and beyond.
We wish everyone a Happy Spring and appreciate your efforts in helping
your child finish the school year strong academically, behaviorally, and in daily
attendance! Go Jaguars!

One of our very own 8th graders,
Emele Nunez, designed the mural and
helped Danielle throughout the proc-

For the safety of our students, district
policy states that all parent/ guardians
are required to show a photo ID when
picking up a child/student during school hours. If a family
member or designated emergency contact will be removing
your child from school, a note must be provided with the in-
dividual’s name for that child to be released to that individ-
ual during school hours.
**TARDY STUDENTS**
Students arriving AFTER the 8:35am bell
MUST BE SIGNED IN by a parent or guardian.
